Ogenyi Onazi has been dropped as Assitant Captain of the Super Eagles, ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This might not be unconnected with his squabble with the team leader, John Obi Mikel. Daily Sun reports that all is still not well in the Super Eagles’ camp, ahead of the World Cup. According to the report, Onazi, who plies his trade with Trabzonspor of Turkey, would no longer serve as assistant captain. The national team manager, Gernot Rohr is not disposed to the appointment of a vice-captain, saying the idea was counterproductive to his plans ahead of the Mundial. “Rohr has resolved to cancel the position of assistant captain in the Super Eagles as it is believed to be one of the issues militating against the team. “Mikel remains is the captain and have been told to hand over the captain’s band to the most senior player on the pitch whenever he is being substituted. “By this pronouncement, Onazi ceased to be Super Eagles’ vice-captain from now on,” a source was quoted as saying. Recall that there was tension in Nigeria’s camp ahead of the 2018 World Cup over a rumoured stand-off between Mikel and Onazi. Onazi has already denied that his relationship with the Tianjin TEDA midfielder is strained.

The head of Burundi’s army said on Thursday that an attempted coup had failed and forces loyal to President Pierre Nkurunziza were in control, a day after another general said he had sacked Nkurunziza for seeking an unconstitutional third term in office. “The coup attempt failed, loyal forces are still controlling all strategic points,” said Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Prime Niyongabo, in a statement broadcast on state radio. A Reuters witness reported a journalist at the state broadcaster had said there was still heavy gunfire being heard around the state television and radio station in the capital on Thursday morning. Another Reuters witness said loud blasts were heard in the capital. The witness said two private radio stations and a television station were attacked by unknown men in police uniforms. The two stations were among those that carried Major Gen. Godefroid Niyombare’s announcement on Wednesday that he had sacked Nkurunziza. Neither Niyombare nor his spokespeople were immediately available to comment. With President Nkurunziza having gone to Tanzania to discuss the crisis with East African leaders on Wednesday, the presidency dismissed the declaration by Niyombare, who was fired as Nkurunziza’s intelligence chief in February, saying on Facebook that the coup had been “foiled.” Late on Wednesday night, Nkurunziza’s whereabouts were unclear. A Tanzanian official said he had not attended the talks in Dar es Salaam, and had left to return to Burundi. But Niyombare said the capital’s airport and all border crossings were closed. |

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, has claimed that he was not in any vehicle in his convoy when it drove past an accident scene without offering assistance. Three people were killed on Saturday at Onipepeye Village along Siun-Owode road, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, in the accident that involved two commercial vehicles. PREMIUM TIMES reported how Mr. Adekunbi’s convoy passed the scene of the accident, while rescue efforts were on by residents of the area, without offering any help. The Speaker was also sighted in one of the vehicles in the convoy by a correspondent and other observers at the scene. The lawmaker, however, claimed he was not in any of the vehicles. ‘I am a Rotarian and I know the importance of rendering assistance,” he said on Sunday. “I was not in the convoy when the accident occurred. My convoy drove past the area, and I was not in the convoy, but in another vehicle with some of my colleagues in the assembly.” Mr. Adekunbi, however, admitted driving by the accident. “As at the time I passed through the scene with my colleagues which include Honourable Tola Banjo, the Deputy Speaker, and Honourable Olayiwola Ojodu, we did not observe any accident. I was in Lagos when I heard of the accident,” he said, while explaining that he did not answer calls to his phone on Saturday because he did not know the identity of the caller. The speaker said he sympathised with the victims of the accident and prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed. |
Barely three weeks to the May 29 handover, President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has said that his cabinet would consist of only committed people with experience and proven competence. He stated that his selection of ministers would enable his government live up to its responsibilities and deliver good governance. Buhari made this declaration at a meeting with northern leaders in Abuja on Sunday, in which he said he would focus on job creation, education and security. The President-elect is expected to make his choice of ministeres public, for confirmation by the National Assembly, shortly after taking office on May 29. Buhari had earlier said no corrupt person would be in his cabinet, with strong indications that technocrats, and not politicians or lobbyists, would drive his administration at the federal executive level. |

She married him today. At the end of the wedding party, her mother gave her a newly opened bank savings passbook, with $1000 deposited in it. She told her, "My dear daughter, take this passbook. Keep it as a record of your married life. Whenever something happy and memorable happens in your new life, put some money in. Write down what it's about next to the amount. The more memorable the event is,the more money you can put in. I've done the first one for you today. Do the others with your husband. When you look back after years, you will know how much happiness you've both shared.' She shared this with him after getting home. Both of them thought it was a great idea and couldn't wait to make the next deposit! This is what the passbook looked like after a while: - 7 Feb: $100, his first birthday celebration after marriage - 1 Mar: $300, she gets a salary raise - 20 Mar: $200, vacation to dubai - 15 Apr: $2000, She's pregnant! - 1 Jun: $1000, He gets the big promotion and so on... However, as the years went by, they began fighting and arguing over trivial things. They didn't talk much. They regretted that they had married the most nasty person in the world...There was no more love. One day she talked to her Mother. 'Mom, we can't stand it anymore. We have decided to divorce. I can't imagine how I decided to marry this guy!' Her mother replied, 'Sure, that's no big deal. Just do whatever you want, if you really can't stand it. But before that, do one thing. Remember the savings passbook I gave you on your wedding day? Take out all money and spend it first. You shouldn't keep any record of such a poor marriage.' She agreed with her. So she went to the bank, and was waiting in the queue to cancel the account. While she was waiting, she took a look at the passbook record. She looked, and looked, and looked. Then the memory of all the previous joyful moments came back to her. Her eyes were filled with tears. She left and went home. When she got home, she handed the passbook to him and asked him to spend the money before getting divorced. So the next day, he went to the bank, and was waiting in the queue to cancel the account. While he was waiting, he took a look at the passbook record. He looked, and looked, and looked. Then the memory of all the previous joyful moments came back to him. His eyes were filled with tears. He left and went home. He gave the passbook back to her. She found a new deposit of $5000. And a line next to the record: 'This is the day I realized how much I've loved you throughout all these years. How much happiness you've brought me.' They hugged and cried, putting the passbook back into the safe. If you like this story then from now on give a print out of this story to every couple who is getting married along with a nice notebook to record their happy times...who know you may just be able to help them !! ! |
