Education / Re: Openstack Networking by kdecifer: 10:12am On Nov 20, 2019
Do you know of any openstack deployment in Nigeria? I am curious to know if and how openstack is being used in this country.

Lianamelissa:
Introduction
The OpenStack Networking service provides an API that allows users to set up and define network connectivity and addressing in the cloud. OpenStack supports three modes of networking in the current Grizzly release. These are Flat networking, VLAN Manager, and the very latest, Software Defined Networking (SDN). Software Defined Networking is an approach to networking in which Network Administrators and Cloud Operators can programmatically define virtual network services. The Software Defined Network component of OpenStack Networking is called Neutron. This project code name is widely used in the OpenStack community to describe the SDN mode of OpenStack Networking and was previously known as Quantum but due to copyright reasons, the codename Quantum had to be replaced. As a result, this project is now known as Neutron. At present, during the Grizzly release, the paths and service names still refer to Quantum but will change in future releases.

With SDN, we can describe complex networks in a secure multi-tenant environment that overcomes the issues often associated with the Flat and VLAN OpenStack networks. For Flat networks, as the name describes, all tenants live within the same IP subnet regardless of tenancy. VLAN networking overcomes this by separating the tenant IP ranges with a VLAN ID, but VLANs are limited to 4096 IDs, which is a problem for larger installations, and the user is still limited to a single IP range within their tenant to run their applications. With both these modes, ultimate separation of services is achieved through effective Security Group rules.

SDN in OpenStack is also a pluggable architecture, which means we are able to plug-in and control various switches, firewalls, load balancers and achieve various functions as Firewall as a Service—all defined in software to give you the fine grain control over your complete cloud infrastructure.

VLAN Manager is the default in OpenStack and allows for a multi-tenant environment where each of those separate tenants is assigned an IP address range and VLAN tag that ensures project separation. In Flat networking mode, isolation between tenants is done at the Security Group level.

Configuring Flat networking with DHCP
In Flat networking with DHCP, the IP addresses for our instances are assigned from a running DHCP service on the OpenStack Compute host. This service is provided by dnsmasq. As with Flat networking, a bridge must be configured manually in order for this to function.

Getting ready
To begin with, ensure you’re logged into the controller. If this was created using Vagrant we can access this using the following command:

vagrant ssh controller
If you are using the controller host created in Starting Openstack Compute, we will have three interfaces in our virtual instance:

eth0 is a NAT to the host running VirtualBox
eth1 is our floating (public) network (172.16.0.0/16)
eth2 is our fixed (private) network (10.0.0.0/cool
In a physical production environment, that first interface wouldn’t be present, and references to this NATed eth0 in the following section can be ignored.

How to do it…
To configure our OpenStack environment to use Flat networking with DHCP, carry out the following steps:

OpenStack requires bridging in order for any of the network modes to work. The bridge tools are installed as dependencies when installing the OpenStack nova-network package, but if they aren’t installed you can issue the following commands:

We first need to configure our network bridge (br100) by editing /etc/network/interfaces, as follows:

We then restart our network service to pick up the changes, as follows:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
We now configure OpenStack Compute to use the new bridged interface as part of our Flat network. Add the following lines to /etc/nova/nova.conf:

Restart the required Openstack Compute Services, to pick up the changes:
sudo restart nova-compute sudo restart nova-network
In order to separate private ranges per project (tenant), we get the ID of our tenant, that we will use when creating the network. On a client machine with the keystone client installed, run the following command:

Guy please I need your advise. I helped a friend verify his WAEC result and paid for posting to WES through UPS. 3weeks later, I visited ups website to check the status with the tracking number I was given by the agent but it was still saying last activity was in Ontario Canada pending. I contacted the agent and she told me to contact WES if the package was delivered to them. I sent a mail to WES with the tracking number I was given, still not gotten a response for over a week now. I don't have a number I can contact WES with. All other documents sent after then through another courier service has been verified except the WAEC result. Please what do I do

I just got a mail from WES that secondary school results is now a required document to be assessed for Nigerian applicants. WAEC was specifically mentioned. No reference was made to NECO. I have both. Should I send both (though I intend to send WAEC alone cos the window of time I have is just for WAEC) How did you go about this WAEC verification?

Can someone please help clarify what this section of the ACS guideline means:

Thesis or Research Project Abstract
When the qualification includes a thesis or research project, an abstract of the thesis or research project is required. The abstract should be endorsed by the primary supervisor where possible. The name of the University and the date of the thesis publication or project completion should appear on the front page of the abstract.

I intend to submit my profile to ACS for assessment soon. I have a BSc in Computer Engineering. The only project I did was in my final year. Do I have to submit an abstract of this

Well, the RAM being DDR4 does not really matter to me as long as the processor is i7-4790k and the ram stays at 32GB.
lawrence7:

Good day sir, I'll get to work on the parts you've listed and get back to you with a complete list.
Went through your specs and i'd like to say that the Intel Core I7-4790k Does not support DDR4 Ram.
Computers / Re: Build Rather Than Buy A Desktop PC by kdecifer: 4:18pm On Oct 23, 2015
Hi, this is just what I've been looking for.

I am looking to build a desktop system that is optimized to handle a high level virtualization for lab purposes. So, my ideal build would be:
32GB DDR4 HyperX RAM, 256GB Solid State Primary Drive, 1TB Hard disk to serve as secondary storage, Intel Core i7-4790K processor, USB 3.0 ports, 2 x 1Gbps Ethernet LAN card, optionally DVD-Drive and HDMI interface. No Graphics card, no OS, no monitor.

I would like to get this as soon as possible. Will really appreciate a quotation and a timeline for delivery.

No Qualms:

Please, how does one subscribe for the airtel N1200/GB and that of N833.33/GB?

for the N1200/GB, load 1200 on your sim. Then dial *440*4# send. It will confirm that your blackberry subscription is live. Put the sim into your modem and connect with your regular airtel settings. Enjoy. D N833.33/GB is just an estimate.

note: dis is a blackberry subscription from airtel which gives you 1gb for 1month and it works everywhere: pc, blackberry, android, even normal mobile phone

kambo: so much bashing against mtn! I use mtn 4 night browsing and its very ok. Very reliable. I've lost money money when they switched to per kb after 6am. But compared to glo i was using i'll say mtn was a welcome relief. Glo network was highly erratic. Mtn also has the cheapest night browsing plan @ N833 / Gig no other i know comes close. Multilinks could @ 3500 /20g night but theyre dead where i b at and their quality of service is unverifiable to me. Etisalat is more expensive for calls cuz i made a call to a landline with both networks and etisalat was quick to tell me my tank is empty. Lastly i had a nasty experience talking with an abrupt and snappy etisalat customer care rep. I've never such on mtn . Left a bad taste,as it should, to be dished such ugliness from sb who should have been a professional. From my past experience though glo had the most instant customer care no long waits to get served.

U mite be right about your comment on mtn. afterall, one can only comment based on how fair one has been treated. I can say the same for airtel too. Very wonderful night plan at N833.33/gb or N2500 for 3GB, and the impressive all-day plan at N1200/GB. Both, when combined gives you 4GB(4096 MB) for just N3700. Airtel Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dem_people:

cheesy cheesy cheesy
At last, someone who's making some serious sense and getting to the root of our problems. Its high time that we Nigerians (and Africans in general) look inwardly into our ways of doing things. Infact, we outrightly need an overwhelming cultural revolution.

In the case of Nigeria,

1) Convene a Sovereign National Conference to better design a well-rounded constitution accepted by Nigerians as well as use the conference to address age-old issues plaguing the country.

2) Revert back to regionalism or better still, geopolitical zones whereby each zone elects its leaders. Confederacy is championed here but, will differ from America's style such that, it wouldn't be about states but geopolitical zones. (The current form our our government is quite expensive and cumbersome to maintain).

3) Remove Nigeria from the OIC (Organization of Islamic Countries) and implement secularism. Anti-Secularists should be regarded by the state as potential terrorists and punished, where necessary.

4) Implement a thorough cultural revolution - every level in society has to be Africanized. Meaning? Institution of an Africanist ideology required in every level of public and private life. People should be encouraged to see Nigeria (and Africa) as the ultimate holy land rather than Mecca(Islam), Rome(Catholic Xtianity) or London(Anglican Xtianity).

Personally, though I believe in a creator and pray to him, I'm neither Christian (although born into a Christian family) nor moslem rather, I'm a devoted Africanist - and this is my own religion. The thing here is that, our people are not that psychologically matured to understand that these foreign religions are used to control Africans. Yes, with all our degrees and Phds, most Nigerians are not critical and abstract thinkers. We need people to question things without fear.  We need our own ways of doing things.

Will come back for more. . .

Waoh!!!!!! I'm so feeling you bro. Well said. I think we somehow think alike and I'll really like us to talk more. Here is my email davidsondare@yahoo.com.

Abagworo:

Peace will still not be achieved if you divide the country into 250.

The 2nd factor is religion.Nigerians believe wholeheartedly in other peoples religion while discrediting our own traditional religion.Japan developed after abolishing Islam and Christianity and adopting their traditional religions.USSR outlawed any form of religion.

I think it is high time Christianity and Islam is abolished in Africa.

You are absolutely right in your comment. Religion creates lots of divides. And as you rightly know, a Nigerian is greatly motivated by the religion he/she practices and can go to any length to defend it. But it's just a pity that abolishing religion in Nigeria would require a rational dictator who would'nt care about the bloodshed that will accompany the process.

TCD: Nobody should waste his or her time subscribing for this simple surf. There is no data limit but there is a speed limit, at least I know for the 250naira, 2hour plan. U can't go past 124kbps that's like highest 15KB/s. Most times revolves around 8KB/s which is totally useless. This is plain theft and false advertising, they should have indicated this . Pls don't fall victim to this scam.

I have actually in the past been mad at MTN for not giving me the right value for my money all because of this Simple surf plan. But I think MTN has been fair enough in their dealings with customers as regards the simple surf plan. What do I mean? Well, for those people who would just subscribe to a plan without finding out the details first, this is a lesson to be learnt. Whenever anything is being advertised by the telecoms providers, always run a check on their website to see the details of their advert.

When I checked MTN's website for the Simple surf plan, MTN made it plain that "FAIR USAGE POLICY APPLIES". I immediately ran a check on it on google to know what it meant. After my check, I called their customer desk to ask what it meant and I was SURPRISED that the guy doesnt know. Well, maybe I shouldn't have been so surprised cos they were not expected to know everything.

So by using the fair usage policy, and even though you are on a data unlimited plan, MTN expects you not to use above a certain amount of data. If you however try to exceed that limit, your data access will not be terminated but your speed will be greatly reduced so that in the long run, you won't be able to exceed the limit by a significant margin. For example, if you subscribe to the 2hours plan, you are not expected to use above 100MB or thereabout within that 2 hours. So after reaching 100MB, you will still be able to browse but at a terribly reduced speed say a drop from 700kbps to 15kbps.

So it turns out MTN is just a business trying to cash in on peoples failure to read. No abuses intended cos I was a victim too. Well, I have since left MTN for Airtel cos they offer me more for less.

Thanks guys.

nadrah: First I think some people on here need to understand the difference between "speed" and "data". I'm yet to find a Nigerian complaining that he was duped out of unlimited speed. But data and hours, yes. Second,if a company says it is giving unlimited data, knowing that people will rely on that information and buy that company, then that company needs to cough up the unlimited data because thhats what they are offering. Otherwise, it's false advertising.

If I buy something that company X tells me does A. I expect it to do A after I buy it. You can't come and tell me it's crazy for me to expect it to do A. If I call Company X to complain and they tell me it's actually built to do B, then that's false advertising. Company X just tricked me into buying its product.

Moral of the story. Do as I do and buy internet plans from different providers--depending on who is actually the best at the time. They all offer internet services at roughly the same price. Here's what I did. I moved back to the States and everyone told me MTN was the shit! So I listened and I boughht MTN sim and internet stick. Turned out MTN internet was more like the SHIT as poop, stupid, rubbish. It only worked from 3am-6am. So, I saw visafone was offering free usb modems when you buy a plan, I signed on to their hourly plan. 3 months later, visafone took away their hourly plans and had monthhly limited plans. I was sad but figured since their connection was good and they didn't change the speed...no problem! I was wrong! BIG problem in little China! During my second month and still hoping it was just a glitch, my sister told me her etisalat usb modem was incredible and I tried. Ho Ho! That damn internet was fast! I noticed they were also doing the same free modem with a plan thing, so once visafone month ran out (since I could never finish the 3GB for the month because the damn thing never connected), I went to etisalat and got a usb modem. All was well, till they ended their promo. One thing I noticed throughout my experiments with these 3 companies, my other sister has been using a starcomms usb modem and never complained. Finally, I tried it and I was convinced. So, it's been 3weeks since I got starcomms (they have a promo that has been on for a looong time--8k for modem and 100hrs per month). It's okay. The speed is not phew fast, but it average and consistent! I hope it works! But if it doesn't work and this is the genius of it all! I have 4 usb modems and monthly cost for all 4 are roughly the same (6,500-7,500) so if one acts up, I can easily go a better company and reload.

Until we have better connection plans in Nigeria...this is my strategy.

You could have unlocked the modem and only change sim cards instead of having to buy 4 usb modems. Any way, does anyone knows where I can get an Huawei E367 modem. It offers a speed of 21.6Mbps in the downlink. Thanks

gentlegg: MTN IS A PURE FRAUD. I SAW THE ADVERT OF THE HOURLY SIMPLE SURF LAST WEEK AND IMMEDIATELY I SUBSCRIBED TO 300HRS - N13,000 FOR 3 MONTHS, HOPING TO ENJOY THE UNLIMITED DATA USAGE, PROBABLY A LOT OF ONLINE VIDEO STREAMING I'VE BEEN WISHING FOR. TO MY CHAGRIN THAT SIMPLE SURF IS NOT THE SAME SPEED WITH DATA BUNDLES. INITIALLY I THOUGHT IT'S FROM MY SYSTEM, BUT WHEN I PUT BACK MY GLO REMAINING PACKAGE, THE THING BROWSE AS FAST AS USUAL, THEN MY SIMPLE SURF AGAIN, AS SLOW AS A SNAIL. TO EVEN BROWSE IS QUITE SLOW LET ALONE VIDEO STREAMING OR DOWNLOAD(THE HIGHEST DOWNLOAD I'VE GOT IS 15KBPS. STILL TRYING TO CONFIRM WHAT'S HAPPENING, I SUBSCRIBED TO N100 - 10MB MTN BUNDLE, THE FEW MINUTES IT LASTED ON MY SYSTEM IT WAS AS FAST AS NORMAL MTN 3G DATA BUNDLES AND TRIED DOWNLOADING, THE LEAST I GOT IS 65KBPS BEFORE IT'S EXHAUSTED, SO I CONFIRMED THAT MTN PROGRAMMED THE SIMPLE SURF TO A DIFFERENT INTERNET BASE THAT IS SLOW AS ORDINARY DIAL UP, AND DON'T EVEN THINK OF ANYTHING VIDEO STREAMING.
RIGHT NOW AM REGRETTING THE 13K, INFACT THIS AFTERNOON I CALLED A FRIEND BEGGING HIM TO PAY ME ANY AMOUNT AND TAKE THIS SIMPLE SURF SO I CAN SUBSCRIBE BACK TO MY GLO, BUT THE GUY REFUSED. AND MTN NEVER ADVERTISED THAT THE SO CALLED UNLIMITED DATA SIMPLE SURF HAS A DIFFERENT SPEED OF INTERNET. PURE 419.

This is my personal experience so far with MTN's simple surf internet plans which is time based.

Well, so far it has not made any sense to me. It turns out that two levels of limitations were being imposed. One is that of the time which is obvious. But the second is subtle. Below is my experience with the 2 hours plan which goes for 250 naira and expires in 2 days

My modem has a data capacity of 7.2Mbps. After connecting and online, the signal area shows HSPA which gives an amazing speed with downloads

and you tube video streaming. I was even able to stream live matches from supersports. But this only happens for the first 5 to 10 minutes after

which the signal changes to HSDPA which in the normal sense, the speed should at least average 800kbps. But I was suprised on three different

occasions (with the 2hours plan) that even though the signal shows HSDPA, the speed limit on the statistics window never exceeded 120kbps

which is not even up to the peak on an EDGE network. This by my own standards is only good for googling and visiting text based sites only.

Facebook performs poorly as there was slow or no realtime update on FB. Downloading only sometimes managed to reach 8KB/s while video

streaming is out of the question.

When this had happened the third time, I had to be sure that this was not a problem with my system and network problem and that It was deliberately imposed. So I brought another system with another 7.2Mbps modem but this time around with a data volume based subscription (250MB all day at 1300 naira for 30 days). I connected both at the same time and both were online and doing great at amazing speeds (reaching close to 5.7mbps on both). But after about 7 minutes, the modem with the time

based subscription dropped to 120kbps threshold while the one with 250MB speed continued at its blazing speed. I observed for the next 10

minutes and the time based subscription never exceeded 120kbps. I had to cancel the download I was doing (an 100MB file will take an eternity

to download with a speed of 120kbps which for the most part averages at 64kbps).

Based on the above experiences, my conclusions are as follows:

1. Either there is bug in MTN's implementation of their Internet time based (MTN Simple Surf) plan OR

2. MTN deliberately imposed a speed limit on subscribers with the Time based plan so as to ultimately lower their data usage while hiding

under the guise of "You now pay for the time you use on the internet not the amount of data you consume". This I believe is not true from my

personal experience.

Personally, I stick strongly with the second as this is the most reasonable conclusion the experience offered me.

I sincerely hope readers will give it a second thought before going for the MTN Simple surf plan (Time based). Apart from it being

ridiculously expensive, you won't also get the value for your money. Thanks
