Moreover the Ukrainian military weren't battle-ready. Russia would have taken them unwares, but with this delay the Ukrainians are getting more organized and putting up more resistance. Again, the Ukrainian military could be infiltrated by experienced USA military personnels disguising as volunteers.

It's never in doubt Russia will win the war at least conventionaly, but it's comes with present and future costs which its not yet clear if Putin will survive it and how long it takes Russia to recover from.
