Reports emerging from the ground and social media suggest a volatile and fast-unfolding crisis, with government visibility fading and internet access reportedly cut off across the nation.
Over the past 48 hours, at least 33 people are feared dead as clashes intensified in key areas of the capital. The unrest follows widespread dissatisfaction with President Alassane Ouattara’s administration, accused of severe human rights abuses, increasing poverty, and maintaining deep ties with French influence—a longstanding source of nationalist resentment.
While official confirmation remains elusive due to an alleged internet blackout and media shutdown, speculation on social platforms—most notably from X (formerly Twitter) user Mehmet Vefa Dag—claims President Ouattara is either missing, arrested, or possibly deceased. No public appearances or official statements have been made since the violence erupted.
This is not Ivory Coast’s first encounter with instability. The nation has previously endured a 1999 coup, civil wars from 2002–2007 and 2010–2011, and a military mutiny in 2017. Today’s events bear an unsettling resemblance to past crises, raising fears of a full-scale civil war erupting in one of West Africa’s key economies.
Protesters accuse the Ouattara-led government of being a puppet of foreign powers, particularly France and the U.S., with growing criticism aimed at the recent expansion of AFRICOM presence in the region. Critics argue these military partnerships mask deeper geopolitical interests that further destabilize the Sahel.
As of this report, national broadcasts are down, and no verified updates have been issued by state authorities. International organizations and embassies are reportedly on high alert, urging their citizens to shelter in place.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, has sparked fresh controversy after declaring that citizens who oppose his father in the upcoming general election will be banished.

He also announced a new policy banning female soldiers from wearing trousers.

Ugandans are expected to head to the polls in January, but the political climate has been growing increasingly hostile, with alleged frequent crackdowns on the opposition.

“Those who do not support Mzee (respectful term for his father) wholeheartedly better be very careful!” he warned in a post on X.

We will deport all the traitors in public view!!” he added.

The army general, widely seen as Museveni’s heir apparent, is known for his provocative online remarks. Earlier this month, he claimed responsibility for the assault and torture of Eddie Mutwe, bodyguard to opposition leader Bobi Wine.

“I take FULL responsibility, including the long overdue beating of Eddie Mutwe… That was an appetiser!” Kainerugaba boasted.

In another post, Kainerugaba imposed a new dress code for women in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), mandating skirts instead of trousers.


“Trousers are for men, not for women,” he stated, adding that “Anyone who forces our sisters to put on trousers on parade again will have a very bad day.”

Although women make up a small percentage of the UPDF, they have historically been issued the same uniforms as male soldiers, with skirts typically reserved for ceremonial events.

This was supposed to be the disciplined military general who would fix Nigeria, but instead became "Baba Go Slow", a painfully ironic nickname for a man who moved at snail's pace while Nigeria burned.

Under his watch, insecurity spread like wildfire, with bandits operating like parallel governments in the Northwest. The economy nosedived into two recessions, yet his government kept borrowing until our debt profile ballooned to trillions of naira.

By 2022, even his most ardent supporters couldn't defend the unaffordable fuel prices, crumbling naira, and ASUU strikes that kept students home for eight months! When he left office in 2023, many Nigerians were relieved that his torturous eight years were over, not knowing the worst was yet to come.

If there’s one thing that unites Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and political lines, it’s our collective anger towards politicians who have made life unbearable for the average citizen.

1. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Jagaban of suffering

No Nigerian leader has ever been as universally loathed in such a record time as Tinubu. We’ll be right to say he’s the most hated president in living memory.

Within months of his May 2023 inauguration, the "Renewed Hope" slogan became a cruel joke as he unleashed the most painful economic policies in decades. The overnight removal of fuel subsidies wasn't just poorly executed, it was economic arson, instantly tripling transportation costs and skyrocketing food prices.

Then came the naira devaluation that wiped out savings and crippled countless businesses. But what truly enrages Nigerians is the tone-deafness. Spending millions on the presidential jet while claiming "subsidy is gone", or urging citizens to "endure suffering" while he globe-trots, feels like a slap in the face. And let’s not even get started on the billions in taxpayer money spent on solar power, while the rest of the country continues to endure epileptic power supply and constant grid collapses.

It’s quite unfortunate that Tinubu has somehow made Nigerians feel nostalgic for the Buhari years.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a stern warning to Nigeria, urging the government to rein in its spending habits at a time when President Bola Tinubu’s administration has earmarked a staggering N6.1 billion for international travel in the 2025 budget.

The caution, delivered during the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., comes as concerns mount over the Tinubu-led government’s lavish expenditure amid Nigeria’s pressing economic challenges.

Davide Furceri, Division Chief in the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department, did not mince words in his address. “Nigeria managed to do a very difficult reform that was important in delivering fiscal savings,” he acknowledged, according to TheCable. “But spending must be done wisely, which means stronger prioritization and greater efficiency in resource allocation.” Furceri emphasized that while Nigeria faces urgent spending needs, fiscal discipline remains non-negotiable—a pointed message that casts a shadow over the administration’s budgetary priorities.

The IMF’s admonition arrives against the backdrop of growing unease about the Tinubu government’s spending patterns, particularly its hefty allocations for travel.

A recent breakdown of the 2025 budget by SaharaReporters revealed that President Tinubu plans to spend N6.1 billion on foreign trips and N873 million on local travel, totaling N7 billion for the year.

Vice President Kashim Shettima is also slated to burn through N1.314 billion on international travel and N417.488 million domestically, further fueling public outrage over what critics call reckless extravagance.

This isn’t the first time the presidency’s travel costs have raised eyebrows. Data from the Open Treasury Portal, reviewed by SaharaReporters, showed that in 2024 alone, the Tinubu administration shelled out N36.3 billion on international travel—N12.2 billion for “training” and N24.19 billion for “other” purposes. Local travel expenses added another N47 billion, bringing the total to a jaw-dropping N83 billion. With Nigeria grappling with limited revenue and economic hardship, such figures have sparked fierce debate about the government’s priorities.

Defending the spree, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, took to Channels TV to argue that the trips are a boon for the economy.

He pointed to a recent visit to Brazil, where Tinubu reportedly secured $2 million in investments for the livestock sector to tackle the herders-farmers crisis. “Other countries are chasing after these investments, but President Tinubu was able to secure them for Nigeria,” Tuggar boasted. “I would rather say we are not travelling enough; we should do more. Nigeria has the money. How much does travelling cost compared to the benefits?”

But as the IMF’s warning reverberates, many Nigerians are questioning whether the benefits truly outweigh the costs—or if the administration’s globe-trotting is a luxury the nation can ill afford.

With billions budgeted for 2025 and a track record of eye-watering expenditures, the Tinubu government finds itself at a crossroads, facing mounting pressure to justify its choices to a skeptical public and an watchful international community.
