The Igbo community in Finland has lamented the silence of the Finnish Government on the activities of Igbo dissident and leader of autopilot arm of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Simon Ekpa even after the community laid a complaint to the Finnish General Assembly and the European General Assembly.

The chairman of the Igbo community in Finland, Kingsley Orji said the community has dragged the outlaw to the Finnish government to stop his utterances and directives to his followers in southeast Nigeria but nothing has come out of it yet.

“We are aware he is causing problems in Nigeria and we have laid complaints but they are telling us about his human rights. He was to appear before the European General Assembly last Friday but he didn’t and nothing was done to him.

“Simon Ekpa is a politician here in Finland and he belongs to a political party. And we are talking about a man who openly canvasses for arms and ammunition to be supplied to him.

“To tell you the truth, we don’t know what he does exactly or says exactly to the people in Nigeria that makes them obey him foolishly. But he believes he is fighting a cause. I will advise the people the Igbo in Nigeria to go about their businesses and on election days, go and cast their votes.
“What baffles me is that governors of these southeast states allow someone outside Nigeria to control what is happening in the states they govern. Are they not the chief security officers of these states? Are they going to fold their hands and do nothing? Simon Ekpa is living peacefully here just like the other 400 Igbo who are also citizens of Finland. I am a citizen too and if Ekpa is living here and causing problems in the southeast of Nigeria. It should be taken seriously and acted upon.
“I don’t see anything happening to him from this end because they respect human rights here and activism is allowed but if terrorism is what he is practising in Nigeria, then that should be tackled seriously. We have pushed him here for the government to tackle but I don’t see government doing anything. But something can be done from Nigeria. The governors of the southeast should stand up and defend their territory if they see him as a threat.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) have distanced themselves from an alleged financial donation by the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, for support and mobilisation of votes ahead of the coming presidential election.

A petition purportedly written by Frank Onwumere of Dominion Centre International, Owerri, Imo State, and addressed to CAN President, Daniel Okoh, alleging that N2 billion was provided by Obi during the yuletide season to CAN, PFN and Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) for disbursement to churches and some popular pastors and Catholic bishops for the purposes of support, but was hijacked and shared by some people leaving others had surfaced on social media at the weekend.

The petition, which generated several reactions on social media, added that some churches were asking for a visiting fee of about N50 million and above from politicians, particularly Obi, so as to ask their congregation to vote for him during the presidential elections.

PFN Vice President, John Praise, in a telephone interview with Daily Sun, asked Nigerians to disregard the petition as it’s nothing close to truth.

“Besides, the man whose name was used to sign the petition, Onwumere, has come out to disown the petition and had distanced himself from the petition,” he said.

CAN Director of National Issues, Stephen Adegbite, also told Daily Sun that he wasn’t aware of the petition, but there’s nothing close to truth regarding the petition.

He said: “We held a meeting of national officers of CAN last Thursday and nothing of such was neither mentioned nor discussed at the meeting. So, Nigerians should disregard the said petition. It’s possibly the work of mischief.”

John Hayab, a senior official of northern CAN, also confirmed that such engagement or discussion with Obi, never happened.

“This is totally a mischief and effort of some might want to heat up the polity unnecessarily ahead of the fast approaching elections. Whoever is making this allegation need his or her head checked properly,” he said.

He maintained that CAN has remained apolitical and has not pitched tent nor asked Christians to vote for any candidate. CAN has only maintained its stand against Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket as presented by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We have informed Christians that 17 political parties have presented presidential candidates. So, everybody is at liberty to choose any candidate that he or she is convinced that has good intentions for Nigeria,” he said.

Meanwhile, Okoh said he’s not aware of such money given to churches to mobilise votes for any presidential candidate nor received the said petition dated, December 22, 2022.

He said: “As a faith-based entity, CAN non-partisan and will neither endorse nor mobilise support for any candidate in the coming elections as against the social media post being circulated by some elements.”

He urged Nigerians to disregard the purported petition as its content is untrue and malicious, and warned those peddling the falsehood to desist from such acts because they are capable of defaming innocent people and revered religious institutions as well as breaching public peace.

Okoh, who was a guest at the opening ceremony of the first plenary of CBCN in Abuja, yesterday, however, confirmed there was pressure on CAN to openly endorse a presidential candidate in the coming election but it refused because CAN has members in all the political parties and cannot endorse one against the other.

“In order to provide a guide for Nigerian voters, who constantly ask the leadership of CAN to endorse a candidate so that all Christians would vote in one direction, the Committee on Politics and Strategy of CAN provided some guidelines to help voters in making informed choices.

I just had a dream now and in the dream, the election was conducted and Atiku won the election. Like I said earlier I'm Obidient 100%. I waited anxiously to see the breakdown of the states he won but didn't see this before I woke up. But the amazing thing I saw was that the only state Obi won in South West was Lagos. I saw Tinubu lovers in the dream very sad and some PDP making jest of me. Just woke up now and not happy, though I know it's just a dream, but I've decided I'll start a 7days fasting and prayer today and also resolved I must go to Ibadan this week to go and get my PVC. I must vote for Obi and also support with fasting and prayers. To Obidients who also are only wishing Obi wins like me, please go and get your PVC o. Let's not only wish o let's vote for him o. vote. The Light must shine in Nigeria, Obi is my only hope of staying back in this country.

Opposition political parties have enjoined the Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emeifele not to bow to pressure from desperate politicians who were pushing for a shift in the date for the swap of old Naira notes with the newly redesigned currency.

The Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party and the Zenith Labour Party, expressed these views in separate interviews, in Abuja, on Friday.

Mr Phrank Shaibu, the spokesperson for the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, said it was obvious that the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, was the worst hit by the CBN policy because his politics has always revolved around the use of money.

Shaibu said, “Tinubu is obviously frustrated by his inability to stop the cashless policy and currency redesign of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that will curb vote buying and enhance the credibility of next month’s election, he has begun crying over his imminent defeat.

“Even though the CBN policy affects all 18 political parties, APC is the only one frustrated because their plan to deploy bullion vans and bribe poor voters and security agents on the day of election has failed woefully.”

He recalled that on the eve of the 2019 Presidential election, two cash-laden bullion vans were pictured entering Tinubu’s premises located on 26 Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi. Several petitions were written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) but nothing has been heard of the matter ever since.”

Speaking in a similar vein, the Presidential Candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, described the CBN Naira redesign policy as a patriotic decision which should be supported by all.

He said, “I want to use this opportunity to call on Godwin Emefiele, governor of the central bank, not to succumb or listen to anybody from anywhere suggesting that there should be an extension for the return of the old note back to the bank.

“His name will be written in gold if he gets this thing done. And on the part of the President, his mantra failed Nigerians and he has come up to tell Nigerians that he will ensure free and fair elections.

“I want to say that the decision taken by the central bank of Nigeria and with the approval by President Buhari is the best for this nation.

“It is a patriotic decision taken by CBN as it relates to the new banknote and the time stipulated for the removal of the old note.”

He further said, “We have been in this country and people given the responsibility to serve, go there to help themselves.

“They steal the money and put it to personal use. They don’t use it to even develop their environment.

“They stack the money at home, in septic tanks, in the farm, and some of these funds have been there for more than ten, fifteen years, idling away. So why do you steal what you do not need?

“So, the CBN had to put on its thinking cap.

“Those categories of naira notes, if not returned before the date stipulated by CBN would become toilet paper.

“That is, will be of no use. Now people are afraid to take these notes to the banks for fear of being identified.

“Billions and millions of naira notes are still in the homes of some people. It is either they take the courage to bring it to the banks or by the end of next week, they become toilet paper. “This is one way to ensure free and fair elections by making we politicians not have access to money to buy votes.

“So, whether they are National Assembly members or anybody whatsoever, who is opposed to this is very unpatriotic.

“Must you carry cash in all your transaction? Go and do the transfer? Let us not cry, we have been enduring for seven and half years.

“This money will get back into circulation, immediately after the election, and I suspect CBN will release a little so that Nigeria will have some money in their hands. Those crying are crying because they want money to go and buy votes.

“Emefiele, don’t succumb, you have the support of most Nigerians, over 95 per cent of Nigerians are behind you in this regard.”

Also, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Dr Yunusa Tanko said, “We are not surprised that those at the forefront of cash and carry politics, who are used to deploying bullion vans for election purposes are the ones complaining about this laudable government policy targeted at curbing inflation.

“Look at the inflation figures today, inflation numbers are coming down. The CBN must not back down, the bank should insist on the January 31st date to prevent a situation where those who have stashed billions in their closet with the aim of buying votes will be denied that opportunity. “
