It's now 15 years since the late dictator General Sani Abacha died of cardiac arrest on the laps of some indian prostitutes. Hated by many, Loved by a few but to be missed by ALL. Please free to drop a word or two in remembrance of the dead. Below is the speech he read to Nigerians on the eve of his hostile take over of government from Chief Ernest Shonekan: Fellow Nigerians, sequel to the resignation of the former Head of the Interim National Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Chief Ernest Shonekan and my subsequent appointment as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief, I have had extensive consultations within the armed forces hierarchy and other well meaning Nigerians in a bid to find solutions to the various political, economic and social problems which have engulfed our beloved country, and which have made life most difficult to the ordinary citizen of this nation. Chief Ernest Shonekan took over as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces at a most trying time in the history of the country. Politically, economically, and socially, there were lots of uncertainties. Things appeared bleak and the atmosphere was heavy with uncertainties. However, driven by a belief in himself, his countrymen, and love for his country, he accepted to face the challenges of our time. I will, therefore, like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to him for his selfless service to the nation. He showed great courage at taking on the daunting task of heading the Interim National Government and even greater courage to know when to leave. Many have expressed fears about the apparent return of the military. Many have talked about the concern of the international community. However, under the present circumstances the survival of our beloved country is far above any other consideration. Nigeria is the only country we have. We must, therefore, solve our problems ourselves. We must lay a very solid foundation for the growth of democracy. We should avoid any ad hoc or temporary solutions. The problems must be addressed firmly, objectively, decisively and with all sincerity of purpose. Consequently, the following decisions come into immediate effect: The Interim National Government is hereby dissolved. The National and State Assemblies are also dissolved. The State Executive Councils are dissolved. The Brigade Commanders are to take over from the Governors in their States until Administrators are appointed. Where there are no Brigade Commanders, the Commissioners of Police in the State are to take over. All Local Governments stand dissolved. The Directors of Personnel are to take over the administration of the Local Governments until Administrators are appointed. All former Secretaries to Federal Ministries are to hand over to their Directors-General until Ministers are appointed. The two political parties are hereby dissolved. All processions, political meetings and associations of any type in any part of the country are hereby banned. Any consultative committee by whatever name called is hereby proscribed. Decree 61 of 1993 is hereby abrogated. A Provisional Ruling Council (PRC), is hereby established. It will comprise: The Head of State, Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces of the federal Republic of Nigeria as Chairman. The Chief of General Staff as Vice-Chairman The Honourable Minister of Defence The Chief of Defence Staff The Service Chiefs The Inspector General of Police The Attorney General and Minister of Justice The Internal Affairs Minister The Foreign Affairs Minister Also, a Federal Executive Council will be put in place. Our security system will be enhanced to ensure that lives of citizens, property of individuals are protected and preserved. Drug trafficking and other economic crimes such as 419 must be tackled and eliminated. On the current strike throughout the nation following the increase in the price of fuel, I appeal to all the trade unions to return to work immediately. We cannot afford further dislocation and destruction of our economy. On the closed media houses, government is hereby lifting the order of proscription with immediate effect. We, however, appeal to the media houses that in this spirit of national reconciliation, we should show more restraint and build a united and peaceful Nigeria. Fellow Nigerians, the events of the past months, starting from the annulment of the June 12 presidential election, culminating in the appointment of the former Head of State, Chief Ernest Shonekan, who unfortunately resigned yesterday, are well known to you. The economic downturn has undoubtedly been aggravated by the ongoing political crisis. We require well thought-out and permanent solutions to these problems if we are to emerge stronger for them. Consequently, a constitutional conference with full constituent powers will be established soon to determine the future constitutional structure of Nigeria. The constitutional conference will also recommend the method of forming parties, which will lead to the ultimate recognition of political parties formed by the people. While the conference is on, the re-organisation and reform of the following major institutions will be carried out: The Military The Police The Customs The Judiciary NITEL NNPC NEPA The Banking Industry Higher Educational Institutions This regime will be firm, humane, and decisive. We will not condone nor tolerate any act of indiscipline. Any attempt to test our will be decisively dealt with. For the International Community, we ask that you suspend judgment while we grapple with the onerous task of nation building, reconciliation and repairs. This government is a child of necessity with a strong determination to restore peace and stability to our country and on these foundations, enthrone a lasting and true democracy. Give us the chance to solve our problems in our own ways. Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria General Sani Abacha GCFR President Federal Republic Of Nigeria |
May the souls of the departed continue to rest in peace! Amen |

Myself2: Stop talking rubbish. So the guy was spewing rubbish? So the question by the journalist was also a silly one? Hmm. **SMH** |
ENEONWO: Someone just won a contract: To cook up allegations that will be used to suspend Tambuwal's membership of PDP, simply because he had refused to turn the House of Reps to a lobby-yard of Jonathan's presidential ambition. They are currently executing the Amechi-contract, but Amechi is proving inedible.Spot on. You said it the way it is. I must say you have given expression to my thoughts. |

Demdem: “Those who are saying Buhari should step aside for me are not members of our party. May be they are PDP members who are afraid of General Buhari. This is because the way they fear Buhari – I swear they do not fear God the almighty,” he said.Really? I must be missing something. Tell me more. On what kind of TV screen can one see/watch God? Is it on HD? Plasma? LCD? LED? Cathode-Ray? Black and White? made by Samsung? LG? Sony? Panasonic? Toshiba or National? |
Oshiomole was on point. So is Wole Soyinka, Fashola and other well meaning Nigerians that were bold enough to call a spade by it's name. The good governance tour was conceived by Labaran Maku to amass funds for his Governorship ambition in 2015. GEJ being silly and clueless and presiding over a weak federal govt bereft of ideas and desperately looking for any positive news to boost it's dying image approved it without giving it a second thought. Well, the Governors' forum (which oshiomole is a member) may have agreed when the idea was tabled before them, but I believe Maku did not provide the cost details to be incurred on the said trip. Most of them Governors were neck dip before realizing what they got themselves into and could not back out for fear of the negative news it might attract to the federal govt. Learnt from a reliable source that Maku came up with a budget of N180m to be coughed out by Edo state Govt as her contribution towards the execution of the tour in Edo state. This over bloated amount was reported to have angered Oshiomole and resulted in his refusal to fund the GGT trip. I knew the whole event was a charade when i watched Maku on NTA commending Uduaghan and giving him a passs mark for the GREAT transformational development in Delta state. Imagine how much Liebaran Maku would have realized by the time he's done touring 36 states plus the FCT. Indeed it is good to work with a boss who's Intelligent quotient is less than 2.5. Maku simply saw an opportunity and he ceased it as a sharp man. The only regret as always, is: It's all at the expense of the common Nigerian. |

Infact, I was about to start a thread on this. I have been shut out of my darling Nairaland for over 24 hours because of this problem. Each time i type Nairaland on my browser, it re-directs me to another site called Hobatoba.com. I just tried this solution now. It worked like magic. I suggest you leave this thread on front page so that new nairalanders who just started using etisalat and are having this problem, will be promptly advised. Also, I observed it is browser specific. As it is most common with Opera browsers. Firefox does not have this problem. Thanks. |

solopumpy227: Do you know something we dont know? What good works are you talking about?. I have been trying to follow a thread, purportedly, opened by insecere9gerian to showcase GEJ's achievements but I am yet to be dissapointed about my belief that GEJ lacks all it takes to be a fruitful leader. I have seen genuine and deliberate effort for development in Lagos, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom to mention a few-these are evidenced by various verifiable pictures/videos posted by lackeys/fans of these government but I have not seen any heart-warming evidence of any project started and completed by GEJ at Aso-Rock or even back then in Yenagoa.Well said. |
confusion247: Lai should tell us the difference between ACN and PDP. To make the matter worse, the leader of ACN is no other but Tinubu. Nigeria is blessed with corrupt leaders.Kindly igore the messenger and focus on the substance of the message. ACN have raised valuable issues requiring critical attention and we all (especially the federal government) need to rise above partisan politics to provide workable solution to the impending doom. Sadly, rather than put on his thinking cap, GEJ is busy sttategising on how to contest in 2015. May God help Nigeria. Oya GEJ apologists, as usual, keep the insults rolling! |
people like this, are the reason why Nigeria will remain backwards! All these are expected. The movie has just begun. Now watch out for the following: -N2N high definition Campaigns -Several interest support groups with names like Youth Arise for Nigeria YAN, Concerned citizens of Nigeria CCN, Niger-Delta Professionals etc (as in the days of Abacha) -calling on GEJ to contest -A rapid depletion of our foreign reserves Nigerians are in for it as this corrupt, selfish, clueless and dull man called Jonathan will stop at nothing until he achieves his aim: which is to rule Nigeria by whatever means for 8 years and of course with the tacit support of some greedy Nigerians. Only God can save us! |
How nice would it be to lay hands on the full book or the link. My appetite is wet already. Very interesting. More interesting is the fact that most of the dramatis personae are still alive! Nice job El Rufai, nice job @OP. |
Damojo: upwardly mobile bizman n u av time 2 post epistle on NL. #upwardlymobiletoiletWhat exactly do you mean by this please? Quite unlike me but I am constrained to call you a foo00ol. I smell hate and jealosy all over you. Also refer to your dictionary for the meaning of epistle.**Skunk** |
Maybe if this topic came up 48 hours ago it would have influenced my choice. I am an upwardly mobile businessman and was seriously at a cross road on which to buy between a blackberry and an android phone. I eventually settled for a Samsung galaxy Ace and i seem to be enjoying it, though I have never used a BB. Anything that will enable me attend to my mails immediately, and of course work with Excel, word and power point at an affordable cost is ok for me. The pinging is very irrelevaant and secondary. Maybe guys that have used the phone variants ie BB, Android and Iphone should help by analysing the special advantage each of the phones have other the others. This could be a starting point for people with unbiased minds like ours! Below are the few I have been able to come up with. Feel free to populate the list below as you may deem fit. Blackberry +Pinging -Limitless download ability (this is mostly a fallacy as most network providers place a limit to what can be downloaded) Androids +Plan flexibility -Ability to download different apps. Iphones Limit to applications' downloads due to incompatibility of it's system with most applications |
@Kaymed, Please how much will a clean volkswagen sharon cost me? Kindly provide prices for 2 or 3 different models. I want prices that will get it to my doorstep in Kaduna and of course with good custom papers to avoid harrassments. Thanks. |
Dear Nairalanders, below is an extract as provided from a former member of Neighbor to Neighbor on a recent invitation by N2N. During last elections, i signed up for neighbour to neighbour volunteer group for Goodluck Jonathan from his campaign organization. Please dont get this wrong. I will never support GEJ even in my grave and i only signed up to neighbour to neighbour because i wanted to avail my self to their training so as to apply the methods to support my own candidate. this means during the time of registration, they collected my phone number. So As I was watching Nigeria's disappointing match this evening, this text message came to my phone and it reads:Oya let GEJ and his apologists come out and deny this one too like they did for the posters that founds their ways on the streets of Abuja on Jan 01 2013.. One thing I know for sure is this man is taking us for a ride. Please feel free to drop your comments and thoughts on the above. |
Mr Speaker is technically right on his assertion and his defence of the state house of assembly. The constitution is indeed silent on how long an acting elected public officer should be absent before his deputy can be sworn in. In a country like Nigeria, it means a Governor can win elections and after a few weeks, hand over to his deputy in order to go for vacation and return in 4 years time to present himself for another election. Danbaba Suntai's case is a dead end with no body raising any alarm and Liyel Imoke's is assuming similar dimension. They are only exploiting the loop holes in a flawed constitution handed over to us by the military, for their personal gain. The painful part of it is that, they have as collaborators, people (house of assembly members) who are ordinarily meant to fight against and defend the interest of the common man! |
Nice speech. For those that watched it live, Did he use a teleprompter or was it a written speech? If answer to above questions are NO, then Obama is one of the best orators the world has ever produced. ****Shaking my head and comparing him with Oga Jona!**** |
Am glad to be a part Nairaland. It has helped me change my perception of real life issues and also made me know through constant interaction (been a member since 2007 i think) that there are intelligent people who base their reasoning and analysis on logic and facts, while there are also stewpid people who write/speak just to be noticed. God bless Nairaland and every sensible poster! Kewt via Nokia 3310 smartphones |

2cute: Whitney Houston murdered by drug dealers:But why will a creditor want to kill a debtor? Of what benefit is the death of a huge debtor to a creditor? This line of reasoning defies reasonable logic. This private investigator Paul Huebl might just be an attention seeker! |
Had this neighbour (a banker) whose Generator was directly behind my window. He puts it on when he returns from work in the evening and never puts it off till the next morning as it runs through out the night. If Nepa carry light by 1am, 2am or 3am, he go put am on by that time. Whenever he travels out of town, our compound enjoys an abnormal kind of silence which everyone cherishes. I used to imagine how much he spends on fuel and maintenance of the gen. To cut a long story short, Mr Banker neighbour was dismissed from the bank he works because of fraud I think cos he works in internal control/Audit department and he had to sell all of his properties the big gen inclusive, to offset the debt brought about by the fraud cos the bank took him to court. And that was the end of the gen disturbance story. Not happy about what happened to him though, but thanked God that the noise making generator is no longer a problem and we all can enjoy our sleep at night. **Did i add that our area is a forgotten area to Nepa/Phcn as we hardly enjoy 3hrs of stable electricity daily?** God help us! |

[/quote]Spot on. You just gave expression to my thoughts.
