PoliticsBudget Padding: Dogara Begs President Buhari Over Scandal by kglamour(op): 4:11pm On Aug 05, 2016
– Dogara is said to have called for the meeting which is scheduled for 4.30pm on Friday
– Sources say the Speaker is scared President Buhari may take in Jibrin’s comment
– Dogara’s spokesman has, however, denied being aware of any planned meeting between the pairThe Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara will reportedly meet with President Muhammadu Buhari over the ongoing budget padding scandal.
According to Premium Times, Dogara is expected to meet with the president by 4.30pm on Friday, August 5, as part of his (Buhari’s) schedule for the day at the instance of the Speaker.Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara may have run to President Buhari over the recent allegations of fraud leveled against him. lt was gathered that Dogara sought to meet with President Buhari over the allegations brought against him by Abdulmumin Jibrin, a former chairman of the appropriations committee of the House, that the Speaker was involved in budget fraud.
He is said to be seeking audience with the president so as to explain himself to Buhari before he takes in all that Jibrin has been saying about the budget padding, because he fears he might not be able to convince the president if that happens. Part of the discussion between the pair would be for President Buhari to call Jibrin to order as the latter is now under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offenses Commission (ICPC), the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigeria Police Force. Dogara’s spokesperson, Turaki Hassan, however denied the report when contacted, stating that he is unaware of any such planned meeting between Buhari and the Speaker. The Speaker’s fears may also have stemmed from the fact that Jibrin claimed that 250 members of the House have signed a petition calling for his (Dogara’s) resignation. Jibrin went on air to state this despite the instruction from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop him from commenting on the budget padding scandal. The party admitted that the budget padding crisis has caused it a lot of embarrassment adding that it is seeking possible solution to the matter.

PoliticsLawyers Condemn Saraki's Move To Weaken CCB, CCT by kglamour(op): 12:54pm On Apr 15, 2016
– The Senate is passing a bill to reduce the power of the CCB and CCT
– The move is suspected to frustrate the agencies because Senator Saraki is facing trial
– Professor Sagay condemns the bill and describes it as disgusting

Prof. Itse Sagay who is the chairman of the presidential advisory committee against corruption has lashed out at the Senate for making moves to reduce the powers of the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The Nigerian Senate on Thursday, April 14, passed the Code of Conduct act for second reading under less than 72 hours.
The bill is titled: a bill for an act to amend the Code of Conduct Bureau and tribunal act CAP C15 LFN 2004 and for other related matters, 2016.The bill was sponsored by Peter Nwaoboshi representing Delta north senatorial district who said that the act does not contemplate criminal trial.
It has been speculated that the speedy passage of the bill is to save the Senate president, Bukola Saraki from the on-going trial he was facing which was brought against him by the agencies.Sagay said the move by the senators to weaken the power of the agencies showed a lack of moral sense. He said: “It’s a surprise to me, because I really don’t know that our mentality has degenerated to such a level of self-service that the people, who were sent to the National Assembly to make laws for the benefit of all Nigerians, have started a process that will allow a complete crisis; an Act that corruption cannot be prosecuted.“To me, this is the highest level of shameless misconduct by the generality of the members of the red chamber. Obviously, there is no limit to the level of disgusting things they can do.”
Mr Femi Falana said the proposal was unreasonable as it was apparently being done because of Senator Saraki. He however pointed out that the amendment would not affect any on-going trial.Falana said:“Any amendment of the law under the constitution cannot and will not have retrospective effect. The amendment will not have any effect on pending cases in court.“The excuse being advanced for the devilish agenda is jejune because the CCT, whose members are screened for appointment by the Senate, cannot be said to be under the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.“The proposed amendment also amounts to a conflict of interest because you cannot, because of one man, amend the law of the land. It will amount to an exercise in futility.”The Senators who contributed to the debate of the bill at the National Assembly applauded it as good move. The senators are: Dino Melaye, Barau Jubrin, Samuel Anyanwu, Biodun Olujimi, Buka Abba Ibrahim and Ibrahim GobirYahaya Abdullahi who is the senator representing Kebbi north however cautioned the timing of the bill. He said Nigerians might think its passage is to frustrate the trial of Saraki at the same agencies.“I just rise to raise a point of caution. I have read and gone through the areas where the amendments are sought and I am not against it, but what I have against is the timing.“We must be ready on the issue of public perception about the position of the Senate in this regard.“Perception can be reality, the Nigerian people can easily interprete the action we are taking today to mean that for all these years, a decree, which became law since 1991, is not being challenged until today because our principal officer is standing trial before the same tribunal.

“I think for the credibility of this Senate, I think we should re-examine whether the timing is right for this bill to go through the second reading or not.”Ike Ekweremadu who presided over the plenary argued that the bill has nothing to do with Saraki.“Let me just say that this bill absolutely has nothing to do with the proceedings going on at the Code of Conduct Tribunal in which the Senate President is involved because his trialhas commenced as you are aware.“If you look at the commencement of the bill of the last paragraph, of course, on the bill which says ‘this bill may be sighted as a code of conduct bureau tribunal Act amendment bill, 2016’.“That means that the bill is not being made retrospective as to affect the proceedings at the code of conduct tribunal; certainly it has nothing to do with it. We are only doing our work as parliamentarians.”

PoliticsKwara Government Worsens Saraki’s Case by kglamour(op): 5:18pm On Apr 07, 2016
Kwara state government confirmation that it was paying Senator Bukola Saraki’s pension, instead of salary as stated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has not helped the embattled senator.

Instead it has only worsened the case against the Senator, as no public officer is entitled to draw money from two government sources at the same time, people with inside knowledge of government said.

Saraki governed Kwara state between 2003 and 2011.

When he became a senator of the Federal Republic in June 2011, all payments to him by Kwara ought to have stopped as he became engaged by the Federal Government as a senator and paid all emoluments of the office.

His pension or whatever the state wanted to cloak it therefore ought to have ceased or at worse one ought to have stopped for the other. Saraki is not known to have rejected the emoluments of a senator.

If the Kwara government felt rightly justified that they were doing the right thing, why did they stop remitting ‘pensions’ into his account from August 2015, after he became Senate President?

The constitution of the Federal Republic is crystal clear about the issue:
It says under the Code of Conduct rules that no public officer shall “Receive or be paid the emoluments of any public office at the same time as he receives or is paid the emoluments of any other public office”. The only exception when he could collect the money twice, is if he is not employed on full time basis.

Emphatically the Code of Conduct says:
(1) A public officer shall not, after his retirement from public service and while receiving pension from public funds, accept more than one remunerative position as chairman, director or employee of: a company owned or controlled by the government; or any public authority.

Kwara State Government has said that it did not continue paying former governor of the State and Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki salaries after he left office in May 2011.

In reaction to evidences tendered at the Senate President’s Code of Conduct Tribunal on Wednesday, that the Kwara government continued to pay salaries or pension to Bukola Saraki Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Isiaka Gold explained that Saraki’s last salary was N291,474.00 for the month of May 2011.

“From June 2011, former Governor Saraki started receiving his pension which was N578,188.00 as other past governors in the country”.

The statement added that after the review of pensions of former political office holders by the State Pension Board, the former governor’s pension increased to N1,239,493.94 monthly from October 2014 to date.

Kwara State Government in the statement dismissed the allegations as false and misleading.

So the Senate President clearly has run foul of the law, collecting Senate salary and also ‘pension’ as former governor.

PoliticsEFCC Now A Toothless Bulldog – Obasanjo by kglamour(op): 8:55pm On Mar 05, 2016
As the former President Olusegun Obasanjo celebrated his 79th birthday on Saturday, he took a retrospective look at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and concluded that the anti-graft agency has become a toothless bulldog after the exit of the pioneer chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. The event held at the International Conference Centre, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta. He said the ex-EFCC boss handled the job so well, and people coined the saying that the the fear of Ribadu was the beginning of wisdom. But the former president bemoaned the fate of the anti-graft agency, describing it as a toothless bulldog. He said, looking in the direction of Ribadu, who was present at the event:“As all know when Nuhu Ribadu was handling the EFCC, he handled it in such a way that people coined the saying that the fear of Ribadu is the beginning of wisdom.“And the the thing you will ask is, how did we go down? How did we lose that, how did we,Nuhu Ribadu is still here, he is still alive, the institution that we started together is still there, what made the institution to become a toothless bull dog?”Obasanjo emphasised the need to be serious as a nation, if the nation really wants to develop.“We need to work things out so that we don’t take two steps forward, one step and three steps backward,” he said.Talking about fighting terrorism and insurgency, the former president recommended the deployment of technology to fight insurgents both at local and global levels.Obasanjo who made reference to the theme of the international colloquium: ‘Human Security, Violent Extremism and Radicalisation: Seeking Sustainable Solutions’ held on Saturday as a prelude to his birthday celebration, noted that the deployment of technologybecame imperative because the insurgents were equally deploying technology to unleash terror on innocent people. The former president further added that since technology was in our homes, in our pockets, it should be used to ward off those who made life unbearable for others.Eminent Nigerians including former governors, serving ministers and the host governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun paid glowing tributes to the former president, describing as a nationalist, an icon and a special gift to the country.Amosun, described him as a nationalist, “who is neither ethno-centric nor an irredentist.” He added that “Baba puts Nigeria first in everything he does.”On his own part, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonaya Onu, described Obasanjo as a”special gift to our country, Nigeria, because every time the country had faced any challenge God has used him to solve that challenge.”The founder of Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo later prayed for the celebrant, requesting that God should grant him more years to continue to serve humanity.Other personalities present at the event include former governors of Osun and Cross River, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Liyel Imoke, wife of the late former governor of Ondo State, Mrs Olufunke Agagu, and Lotto magnate and Chief Kessington Adebutu.

This incidence happened on Saturday, 16/01/2016, when I was returning from my Msc class at Kwara state university (KWASU),Malete. I was in company of four other postgraduate students in a private car, outof which three of us were females sitting at d back seat and the other two were males. We were stopped by a soldier immediately we got to the check point at Sobi barrack(along Malete road). He walked towards my side at the back seat."remove that thing",he said, pointing at my veil. I answered that I cannot remove it. He ordered me to come down and I did. Remove that thing before I count 3,a second soldier said. Gently, I asked him why should I remove it,and angrily he pointed towards a postal(with Abubakar Shekau's picture on it) on the wall of one their brick-filled drums and said "go and ask him". Turning his back at me,"If I count three and u don't remove it,I will deal with you mercilessly.Without altering any word,I stood while he counted his 3. He turned towards me in a scaring manner and I moved a few steps backward. "If not that u are a female,I would have known what to do for u",he said. They threatened to take me to their general inspector. I was ordered to call my husband and they told him that I will not be allowed to move an inch out of this place if I don't remove my veil for them to see my face.Apparently disappointed by his unapproving answer, they further threatened not to let me go without seeingmy face even if I were the daughter of the president of Nigeria. While all these continued, a female soldier arrived and was going to forcefully remove my veil but I resisted. I eventually followed her to a corner where I opened the veil for her. She searched my bag and, found nothing than books, and still threatened to delay for another 30 minutes. We were allowed to go eventually after enough harassment! Is this the price to pay for practicing one's religion?. Chiboks girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram in military uniforms, the uniform was not banned.Robbers rob banks in military uniforms (at least you remember Lekki bank robbery where many policemen were killed),yet military uniform was not banned to be used by soldiers. Why?..Probably because it's not the cause of robbery. How will banning face veil be the solution to Boko Haram insurgency.Pls share, perhaps, it will get to the appropriate quarters for redress. I am a Muslimah, I am not a terrorist.

A Saudi prince has described US businessman Donald Trump, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, as a "disgrace to America". Prince Alwaleed bin Talal said on Twitter that Mr Trump should give up his presidential ambitions because he would never win. It follows Mr Trump's call for Muslims to be barred from entering the US for security reasons. "You are a disgrace not only to the GOP [Republican Party] but to all America," Prince Alwaleed tweeted. "Withdraw from the US presidential race as you will never win." Mr Trump responded by accusing the prince of wanting to use what he called "daddy's money" to control US politicians. That would not happen, Mr Trump said, when he got elected. Mr Trump, the frontrunner for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, has been widely criticised for his call for a ban on Muslims entering the US. On Thursday, Damac Properties - a Dubai firm building a golf complex with Mr Trump - removed his name and image from the property. His comments came following the California shootings, carried out by two Muslims who the FBI said were radicalised.

A Nigerian schoolgirl, Victoria Yohanna, was invited by the House of Lords, the second chamber of UK Parliament, to narrate her terrifying ordeal during one of the biggest ever mass abductions carried out by the Boko Haram sect.Victoria Yohanna will tell House of Lords of brutal Boko Haram attackAccording to The Telegraph, a 15-year-old girl was one of more than 400 people abductedby the terrorists during an attack on the north-east Nigerian town of Baga in January.Today, October 13, Victoria, who managed to escape, will recount her experiences to an audience at the House of Lords. The event will mark the launch of a major new report on the persecution of Christians worldwide, which has been compiled by the charity Aid to the Church in Need.It is the first time when one of Boko Haram’s thousands of schoolgirl victims has travelledto the UK to narrate her horrible ordeal.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the report’s launch, Victoria told how she was abducted along with her mother and five siblings when insurgents attacked her hometown just after New Year.“We heard shooting and the sound of bombs in the early hours of the morning, and at first Ithought it was the Nigerian army trying to protect us. Then I realised it was Boko Haram. Those Boko Haram members whose duty is to take women and children for their caliphatetook our entire family and made us walk on foot to one of their camps,”she said.Victoria recalled that en route she saw numerous corpses of people who had been killed and beheaded by terrorists. Then she spent two weeks at a Boko Haram camp in the outskirts of Baga.“Every morning they took the hostages for training at Islamic school. They would say the Koran is the religion God had for you,”she added.
The girl revealed that she was able to fool the militants into thinking she was a Muslim bypretending to perform the “buta”. Although there were Muslim captives among the hostages who knew she was a Christian, they did not give her away. One night, when terrorists went out to kidnap more people, Victoria and the rest of her family managed to escape from the camp.“I knew what had happened to the Chibok schoolgirls and was very scared. Were it not for God we would probably all be dead by now,”she said.Victoria has been accompanied to the UK by Father Gideon Obasogie, a priest from Maiduguri.Victoria has been accompanied to the UK by Father Gideon Obasogie, a priest from Maiduguri, where she is now living. He recalled that when he met the girl for the first time, she found it impossible to narrate her ordeal without breaking down in tears.“The church has been trying to organise counselling sessions for these victims of Boko Haram. Simply offering them confessional is not enough,”he noted.Meanwhile,President Muhammadu Buhari has recently hosted the United Kingdom’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Nicholas Houghton. The president told the top security chief that Nigeria still needs more support from the British government in its quest to defeat the terrorists.

The United Kingdom has said that it has not given up on its efforts to extradite former Bayelsa State governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, back to Britain to face trial. The UK said it had already contacted the Federal Government requesting Mr. Alamieyeseigha’s extradition, and was awaiting a response to the request. The British HighCommissioner to Nigeria, Andrew Pocock, told the paper in an exclusive interview that the former governor, who recently got state pardon from his criminal conviction in Nigeria, still has an outstanding case of money laundering to answer to in the UK and that the UK government will not give up until Mr. Alamieyeseigha is brought to justice.Mr. Alamieyeseigha, then a serving governor, made a dramatic escape from the custody of the British authorities when he fled back to Nigeria from detention in September 2005. He would later be convicted on similar money laundering charges on July 26, 2007 in Nigeria after he was impeached as governor.Although his recent state pardon by President Goodluck Jonathan hit the UK authorities as a rude shock, Mr. Pocock dismissed insinuations that London was planning to sanction Nigeria over the matter. According to him, “that is not the way we do things”. The High Commissioner also revealed that UK had earlier requested for Alamieyeseigha’s extradition, but did not get any response.{read_more}Mr. Pocock said the UK had asked the Attorney General and Minister for Justice for Alamieyeseigha’s extradition and was still awaiting his position on the issue when President Goodluck Jonathan all of a sudden announced he has been extricated of all wrong doing via the state clemency. The move to pardon him even when the application forhis extradition to Britain was still pending was like daring the applying nation that feels strongly that Alamieyeseigha has a case to answer in their country.According to Mr. Pocock, “The former governor skipped bail in the UK on a charge of moneylaundering and returned to Nigeria. So, he has an outstanding charge in the UK, which is there for him to answer. “We have already discussed it and the Nigerian government knowsour views. But we would like to see him return and answer charge in the UK.”On UK’s past and present efforts to see that Alamieyeseigha is extradited to the UK, Mr. Pocock said: “Yes. I think we asked in the past. I am very sure we asked in the past. But I am not sure we got a formal response. So, we are still waiting for a formal response from the Nigerian government.“We have asked the Attorney General. He will have to tell us what his position is on extradition. I haven’t had a reply yet, but we still wait for it,” the British envoy added.

CCB has now become Buhari's personal attack dog, to use on perceived opponents?.

Will the ever increasing probes put food on our tables, will it increase electricity production, will it uplift the economy?
