A team of teenage girls representing Nigeria has defeated teams from the United States of America (USA), Spain, Turkey, Uzbekistan and China to win the 2018 Technovation world pitch junior division in San Francisco, USA. The team Save-A-Soul from Nigeria developed a mobile application called ‘FD Detector’ to tackle the problem of fake pharmaceutical products in the country. The young Nigerian girls were selected from 2,000 mobile app developers to represent Africa at the world pitch. This is the first time a Junior Nigerian team will emerge among the finalists to visit Silicon Valley and the Nigerian teenage girls will be pitching their app to investors in Silicon Valley, California. Olawale, who damaged the medical equipment at the hospital, also beat up the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Akinwumi Akinloye, into a coma. There was commotion at the Neuro Psychiatric Specialist Hospital, Akure, Ondo State, on Thursday, as Folorunsho Olawale, a psychiatric patient, went berserk and attacked some nurses on duty. Olawale, who damaged the medical equipment at the hospital, also beat up the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Akinwumi Akinloye, into a coma. Not less than four nurses, including a consultant, Dr. Sunday Sajo, and medical workers at the hospital, were injured during the rampage. SaharaReporters learnt that the mentally-sick patient, who had been at the psychiatric hospital for two weeks, was brought to the facility by the Police for re-examination. It was gathered that Olawale had walked into a police station in Akure to confess being among those who murdered Khadijat Oluboyo, daughter of ex-Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lasisi Oluboyo. A source revealed that this prompted police authorities to move the "mentally derailed" boy to a psychiatric hospital as part of the ongoing investigation in the murder Khadijat. It was learned that trouble started inside the psychiatric hospital when Olawale became aggressive on the bed, and some of the nurses tried to administer injection on him. One of the nurses, who pleaded not to be named, said Olawale became charged and over-powered everyone inside the hospital, as he began to destroy medical facilities. "Immediately he became uncontrollable for us, we sent a message to Permanent Secretary of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Adeniran Ikuomola, who rushed down to the hospital,” the nurse said. "And instead of the PS to calm all of us down with good words and also address the issue and challenges in the hospital's facility, he ordered us back to our various duty posts in the unsafe environment.” She added that the nurses decided to embark on demonstration to show their grievances towards the unpleasant working conditions and their safety at the psychiatric hospital. "So, we have protested and vowed never to resume to our duty posts because the PS, Dr. Ikuomola, does not even care about our safety here,” she added. "As a point of contact, we want him to know that sending us back to our duty post will never solve the crisis of adequate welfare and safety in this hospital for nurses.” Opeyemi Oloniyo, leader of the Joint Negotiating Council at the hospital, condemned the attack on nurses and medical workers of the facility, and berated the attitude of the PS, saying: "I heard about the attack on some nurses, doctors and other medical workers in the hospital and we have come to pacify them to go back to their duty as we address the issue. "However, it is very unfortunate that the PS could come here with an 'order' that the workers should resume their work without a soothing tone, which could have addressed the issue at hand. "Thanks to God, nobody lost his life in the attack, else this is not what we would be saying. We want to state it clearly that enough is enough and nobody should threaten the medical staff here with sanction.” Reacting, Dr. Ikuomola denied not listening to all the grievances of the protesting nurse and medical staff, saying the union leader who got to the scene to pacify the nurses was only instigating them against the state government. Femi Joseph, Spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command confirmed the attack, telling SaharaReporters on the phone: "We moved him to the psychiatric hospital to under study him after he showed up at the police station to report himself as being involved in the killing of late Khadijat.” https://www.legitinfobase.com.ng/2018/08/protest-at-ondo-hospital-as-psychiatric.html

Researchers at Israeli cybersecurity firm said Wednesday they had found a flaw in WhatsApp that could allow hackers to modify and send fake messages in the popular social messaging app. CheckPoint said the vulnerability gives a hacker the possibility “to intercept and manipulate messages sent by those in a group or private conversation” as well as “create and spread misinformation”. The report of the flaw comes as the Facebook-owned is coming under increasing scrutiny as a means of spreading misinformation due to its popularity and convenience for forwarding messages to groups. Last month, the app announced limits of forwarding messages following threats by the Indian government to take action after more than 20 people were butchered by crazed mobs after being accused of child kidnapping and other crimes in viral messages circulated wildly on WhatsApp. WhatsApp said in a statement: “We carefully reviewed this issue and it’s the equivalent of altering an email to make it look like something a person never wrote.” However, WhatsApp said: “This claim has nothing to do with the security of end-to-end encryption, which ensures only the sender and recipient can read messages sent on WhatsApp.” The app noted it recently placed a limit on forwarding content, added a label to forwarded messages, and made a series of changes to group chats in order to tackle the challenge of misinformation. Founded in 2009 and purchased by Facebook in 2014, WhatsApp said that at the beginning of the year it had more than 1.5 billion users who exchanged 65 billion messages per day. https://www.legitinfobase.com.ng/2018/08/whatsapp-messages-can-be-manipulated-by.html |

“If you watch closely, you would notice that Saraki’s personal photographer Tope Brown was among those recording the scene, how could he have been there if his principal did not know about the event? It is clear to the discerning eye that what happened today was a concocted script,” the source said. There are indications that the sack of the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had been months in the making, especially because of his suspected connivance with the Senate President and others in the National Assembly against the Muhammadu Buhari administration. Top government sources revealed that before Osinbajo eventually announced his sacking on Tuesday, the President himself had made up his mind to fire the former DG few days before he embarked on a 10-day vacation to the UK. Osinbajo had directed the termination of the appointment of the DSS boss following the invasion of the National Assembly complex by some DSS officers in what the Presidency described as an “unlawful, condemnable and completely unacceptable act, which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is”. http://www.legitinfobase.com.ng/2018/08/exclusive-how-sacked-dss-dg-plotted.html.

Snakes are one such species that are considered weird by majority of us in the world. The snakes listed here have different physical forms and bizarre appearances. Some of them use their weirdness to camouflage with the environment to attack the preys. Here, we have listed the 10 weirdest snakes in the world that are actually bizarre by their looks. 10. Spiny Bush Viper Can there be a snake with all its scales spiked? Yes, the Spiny Bush Viper’s resemblance is something very weird. Spiny bush vipers are not only to be seen weird, but are also very dangerous due to venom content in them. Primarily found in Central Africa, the average length of the snake is considered to be 65 cm. The most shocking and bizarre fact about this snake is that, there is no antivenom found till date. Due to rough scales, they tend to climb branches and other vertical objects very easily. 9. Blind Snake Blind snake is also recognized as “Brahminy Blind Snake”, commonly found in Asia and Africa. The blind snakes are so thin that they are always mistaken for earthworms. Right from the head through the tail is perfectly at same size without rugged scales or improper change in the width. They are completely bind, since their eye as well is covered with scales making them impossible to view. Blind snakes tend to move with the possible light reflection that fall on their eyes for motions and survival. 8. Tentacle Snake Tentacle Snake, also recognized as “Tentacled Snake”, is the only aquatic snake to be featured with a tentacle on its forehead. Very bizarre indeed, however, the tentacles are used to catch fish in a clever manner. The tentacles doesn’t consist of venom, but they have venomous fangs, which are considered to be potent to few aquatic animals. The fangs are positioned deep in the rear of the mouth. Primarily found in South-East Asia, the tentacle snakes are never to be seen anywhere apart from the aquatic regions. 7. Horned Desert Viper A pair of supraocular “horns” on the horned deserted viper snake is something that is very weird to be seen. The horned desert vipers are very rare to find and are native to Northern Africa. These peculiar pair of horns of desert vipers could resemble a moronic snake. Horned desert vipers also renders with the deserted environment as their skin color is completely brown. 6. Flying Snake We never would have imagined that a snake could even fly. Fortunately it is a “Yes”, and is also recognized as “Gliding Snake”, which is primarily found in Southeast Asia. Very weird indeed that the flying snake is also capable of climbing tall trees with their ridge scales. They tend to select an elevated trajectory to glide all the way down to either attack the prey or escape from dangers. Generally considered to be less venomous and potential for small animals. The belly of flying snakes are flexible enough to broaden themselves to facilitate for gliding. 5. Elephant Trunk Snake The Elephant Trunk Snake, as the name says exactly resembles an elephant’s trunk. Basically, the trunk snakes are aquatic and are non-venomous. Bulky outer skin and scales produce hefty trunk like structure. Unlike other snakes, the elephant trunk snakes doesn’t consist of scales in the belly to slither and would be impossible to survive on lands. They grow up to a length of 2.5 meters. Rugged scales on their body helps them catch slippery fishes. 4. Albino Nelsoni Albino Nelsoni snakes are also recognized as “Nelsoni Milk snakes”. It could be considered either beautiful for some or weird, depending on personal interest of the individual. The skin pattern produces alternate red and white thick bands that can give extreme bizarre appearances. Generally consists of 14-18 red rows with broader white rows. An adult Nelsoni snake lengths about 110 centimeters and are considered to be nonvenomous. They are resistant to few mildly venomous snakes of different natives. 3. Spider-tailed Horned Viper Spider-tailed Horned Viper as the name says consists of a spider-like tail to render exactly like a living spider in the environment. The viper’s tail is featured with a bulb like structure to provoke insectivorous birds. While moving, the tail is waved around as though a spider is wandering, which is used as a criteria to catch birds. They are also considered as horned vipers due to elevated scale formation on their eyes. The horned vipers are endemic to western Iran and are one of the rarest species around the world. 2. Eastern Hog-Nosed Snake Easter hog-nosed snake is one of the creepiest snakes around the world due to their bizarre facial structure. The hog-nosed snakes are endemic to North America and are considered nonvenomous. However, the looks tend to be very aggressive and fierce, but are always considered to be harmless to humans. If provoked, the head is raised unlike cobra by flattening their neck. The color of Eastern hog-nosed snakes ranges from gray to black with lighter underside of the tail. 1. Malagasy Leaf-nosed Snake The Malagasy Leaf-nosed Snake is the world’s weirdest snake due to its awkward leafy projection on its head. Formerly recognized as “Langaha Madagascariensis” is endemic to rain forests of Madagascar. Generally considered to be calm, however the bite could be very painful for humans. Counter attack by leaf-nosed snakes are generally due to a result of provoking. As the name says, the front portion of the head completely resembles a leaf and they also camouflage with the branches and stems. Since they tend to fall extensively in dry forests, finding them is quite difficult Photos: http://www.legitinfobase.com.ng/2018/08/10-weirdest-snakes-around-world.html |

PHOENIX -- Federal authorities allege that a former youth care worker at a Phoenix-area facility for immigrant youths sexually abused eight teenage boys, one of several cases brought to light in recent weeks as thousands of immigrant children remain detained around the country . Court documents show Levian Pacheco faces several charges stemming from incidents that allegedly took place between August 2016 and July 2017 at a Southwest Key facility in Mesa. The case was first reported by ProPublica. Authorities charge that Pacheco performed sex acts on two boys and touched six others, all between ages 15 to 17 at the time. "One of the boys decided to speak up about what had happened to him, and then it was kind of a snowfall where another boy — the roommate — spoke up that it also happened to him," Michael Grabell, one of the ProPublica reporters who uncovered the details of abuse at the Southwest Key shelter, told CBS News. Court documents also state that Pacheco is HIV-positive and that some of the teens opted to be tested for the virus. Pacheco has pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations. His federal public defender has said in court documents that the government's allegations of the crimes committed by Pacheco include an "extraordinarily broad range of dates and lack of specificity." "We are looking forward to defending Mr. Pacheco in court," attorney Benjamin Good said in an email to The Associated Press. Grabell told CBS News that it's common for victims of abuse to be afraid to come forward. "Especially in this population, there is this fear that if you come forward and report abuse, it might affect your immigration case," he said. The Department of Health and Human Services told CBS News that "any allegation of abuse of neglect is taken seriously... and appropriate action is taken." The revelations Thursday came one day after police said another worker at a different Southwest Key facility, Fernando Magaz Negrete, is suspected of molesting a 14-year-old immigrant girl . Authorities say Magaz Negrete kissed and fondled the girl in her bedroom on June 27 in an encounter witnessed by the girl's 16-year-old roommate. They said surveillance video shows Magaz Negrete, 32, approaching the bedroom several times throughout the night, though the bedroom itself was outside the camera's view. Southwest Key fired Magaz Negrete. It was not clear if he is represented by an attorney. The Texas-based nonprofit organization, the largest contracted by the U.S. government to house immigrant children, has come under scrutiny for its practices at its various shelters around the Southwest. Many of the over 2,000 children who were separated from their parents after crossing the border illegally have been held at Southwest Key facilities. Following backlash over the Trump administration's child separation policy, officials defended the use of the detention facilities as safe spaces, CBS News correspondent Don Dahler reports. "These shelters were never intended to be long-term group homes," Grabell told CBS News, "and we've heard from various officials, various psychologists that the longer the kids are in the shelter the more time there is for inappropriate relationships to develop." The victims in the case against Pacheco were all unaccompanied minors and it's not clear if they had been separated from their parents or traveled to the U.S. alone, although the government was not widely separating families at the time of the incidents. Southwest Key spokesman Jeff Eller said in an email that Pacheco was immediately suspended and police were called when allegations surfaced. He said Southwest Key and the Health and Human Services department, which is in charge of caring for immigrant youths, take every incident seriously "and there is a never ending process to improve care and standards." ProPublica published a report in July saying police responded to at least 125 calls reporting sex offenses at shelters that primarily serve immigrant children since 2014. The report detailed a 2015 incident at a Tucson, Arizona, Southwest Key facility in which authorities said an employee touched a 15-year-old Honduran boy's penis from outside his clothing. The worker was fired and later convicted of molestation. https://legitinfobase..com/2018/08/hiv-positive-shelter-worker-sexually.html |

A Wisconsin man had to have all his limbs amputated after he contracted a severe infection, likely from a lick from his pet dog Ellie. Last month, Greg Manteufel, from West Bend, started experiencing flu-like symptoms including fever, vomiting and diarrhea. However, when bruising appeared on his arms and legs, the 48-year-old was rushed to the emergency room. Doctors told him a blood infection had spread to all four of his limbs and, due extensive tissue and muscle damage, they would be forced to amputate all of his limbs. Doctors ran blood tests and discovered he'd become infected with a bacterial pathogen known as capnocytophaga canimorsus. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the bacteria is found in the saliva of healthy dogs and cats. One 2014 study from Japan found the bacteria to be present in 69 percent of dogs and 54 percent of cats. The bacteria can be transmitted to humans through bites, licks, or even close proximity with the animal - seeping into the skin even without a cut or scrape. While most people will not exhibit any symptoms if they become infected, it has been shown to cause severe illness n those who have compromised immune systems, according to a 2003 study from France. It is unclear if Greg had any pre-existing conditions but he developed sepsis, or blood poisoning, and his nose, both of his hands and his legs beneath his knees turned black. Within a week of being in the hospital, doctors first amputated Greg's feet and then his legs up to his kneecaps. Then, three weeks after he was first admitted, both of Greg's hands up to his mid palms were amputated. According to a GoFundMe page, doctors were hoping to save the remainder of his arms but, due to extensive damage to the tissue and muscles, both arms up to mid-forearm had to be amputated. Doctors also told Dawn that Greg would need extensive plastic surgery to rebuild his nose. After discovering the Manteufels have a pet dog, the medical staff told Dawn that her husband likely was infected after being licked. 'We can't wrap our heads around it that all of a sudden, he's 48 years old and been around dogs all of his life, and then this happens,' she said. It is currently unclear where the dog is. Dailymail.com has reached out to the family for comment but has not received a reply. Dr Silvia Munoz-Price, an infectious disease specialist with Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, told WITI that Greg's immune system response to the infection resulted in his blood pressure dropping and decreased circulation in his limbs. 'More than 99 percent of the people that have dogs will never have this issue. It's just [a fluke],' said Dr Munoz-Price. Dawn said that despite the multiple surgeries and long road of rehab ahead, her her husband feels lucky to be alive. '[He] kept saying to the doctors: "Take what you need but keep me alive." And they did it. Surprisingly enough, they did do it,' she said. A family friend has started a GoFundMe page to raise money to help cover his mountain medical bills. So far, more than $18,100 has been raised out of a $25,000 goal. According to the page, Greg will be fitted for prosthetic limbs so he can function independently. https://legitinfobase..com/2018/08/man-looses-leg-after-dog-licks-them.html

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has announced that pregnant women in the state will receive a monthly allowance of N3,000. He made this known while speaking during the maiden Infant and Maternal Mortality Summit held in Yenagoa, the state capital, on Monday. The Governor said the allowance was meant to cover the cost of antenatal care for expectant mothers every month. He said, Quote “In order to make it possible for every pregnant woman to deliver safely and to ensure that they are accounted for, supervised and supported throughout pregnancy up to the time of delivery, the government is announcing a safe maternity allowance of N3,000 per month to every pregnant woman in Bayelsa. “From the moment a Bayelsa woman and every woman living in Bayelsa becomes pregnant, she is entitled to N3,000 until her delivery. “But that money will be accessed upon registration in your nearest health care facility for antenatal services. Those who are attending to you will ensure they run a simple test to ensure that you are pregnant. “As they confirm that, they will enrol you for the antenatal programme, which should not be more than nine months. From that month, through the recommendation of that health care centre, you will receive N3,000 every month until you deliver. “This is not just about making money available, but ensuring that the health team gives me a monthly report of the number of women who have been registered in the safe motherhood programme from each local government, as well as the report of their pregnancies and delivery.” Lamenting the rate of infant and maternal mortality in the state, the governor said his administration had decided to stem the tide by building world-class health care facilities in the state. https://legitinfobase..com/2018/08/pregnant-women-receive-stipend-every.html |

Problem in Nigeria Nestled deep in Africa’s Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria has attracted international attention for the worldwide criminal activities that emanate from this central point. A seemingly endless succession of fraudulent offers called “419” scams (referring to the local legal code that forbids this type of activity) sent by email have relieved susceptible people around the world of more than $100 million and resulted in more than a dozen deaths. And Nigerian criminals have established drug trafficking conduits that stretch around the world, trafficking heroin from Asia to Europe and South American drugs to the U.S, Europe, and Asia. Political and Civil Instability Allowed the Establishment of Criminal Organizations In the first two decades after Nigeria gained its independence, drug trafficking activities were rare. But things began to change in the 1980s. Indian heroin began to be funneled through Nigeria on its way to Europe. The criminal groups handling these wares soon forged alliances with South American illicit drug manufacturers and added cocaine to the drugs they were distributing. In the 1990s, these criminal groups became more sophisticated. Cannabis began to be produced within Nigeria, and psychotropic drugs were added to the list of trafficked products. Trafficking channels became more complex and methods of moving drugs more diverse. Statistics on drug seizures within the country show exactly when the Nigerian criminal groups achieved explosive expansion. In 1999, 16,000 kilograms of cannabis herb and 15.6 kg of cocaine were seized; in 2000, this figure leapt to 272,000 kg of cannabis and 54 kg of cocaine. In 2007, the rate of marijuana seizure landed Nigeria in the number four spot after the U.S., Mexico and Bolivia. Nigerian Couriers Arrested in Drug Busts Around the World A review of drug seizures in the first half of 2009 show that Nigerians are still frequently arrested for drug trafficking incidents around the world. In India, Pakistan, Malta, Spain, and other countries, Nigerians are swallowing cocaine or heroin packages, hiding it in their luggage or concealing it in their clothes. Nigerian criminal groups are also coercing gullible young people or prostitutes into transporting or shipping drugs to other countries. As recently as 1984, drug trafficking was a capital offense in Nigeria but public outcry caused a repeal of this law. But the quantity of drugs seized from these couriers was usually small, under ten pounds in most cases. Somehow the larger traffickers, the ones moving multi-ton quantities, don’t seem to be apprehended. According to some analysts, Nigeria was the original core of drug trafficking activity in Western Africa. Over time, it has involved its neighboring countries in the activity, spreading the affliction to Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Cape Verde, Togo, Gambia and Sierra Leone. Nigerian citizens are often found to be involved in drug trafficking inside the U.S., mostly in Eastern and Northeastern cities. They are also detected moving multi-ton quantities of drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border. Drug Treatment Scene in Nigeria Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse Figures are Largely Unavailable There’s really very little information on how many drug users there are in Nigeria. The United Nations reported only 925 people received treatment in 2004, this being the most recent figure available. Nearly 90 percent of these addicts in drug treatment programs were being helped with cannabis addiction. The other drugs sending people to drug rehabilitation were pharmaceutical depressants, inhalants, amphetamine-type drugs, opiates (nearly always heroin) and cocaine. With a total population of 149 million in Nigeria, it is very likely that there are many thousands of people who are addicted to the substances flowing through the country who are not receiving any type of treatment. Narconon Nigeria Drug Prevention In November 2009, a Narconon drug educator joined with government officials and educators to bring a drug-free message to youth. The occasion was the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Organized by Narconon Nigeria, the public lectures held in Lagos brought together the Representative of Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency 1, a lecturer from the Department of Political Science in the Lagos State University, a representative of the Daystar Christian Centre and the Executive Director of the local Narconon drug education and prevention office. Together, these concerned public service officials spread the message that a drug-free life is the best kind of life. In other events, government officials team up with Narconon Nigeria drug educators to visit secondary schools to continue the anti-drug and anti-addiction education. If Nigerian children learn to make drug-free decisions, then the entire country benefits from having an ever-increasing drug-free population. The closest Narconon drug rehabilitation center is in Egypt. You can also find Narconon rehab facilities across Europe, including the UK. https://legitinfobase..com/2018/07/overview-of-drug-addiction-problem-in.html
