Abuja – The management of Garki Hospital, Abuja, says it did not insist on getting police report to treat Miss Angela Igwetu, a National Youth Service Corp member shot dead in Abuja on July 4. In a video presentation to support its claim on Friday in Abuja, Dr Ibrahim Wada, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, said the presentation was to provide facts on the roles of the hospital when they brought Igwetu for urgent medical attention. Wada explained that Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) was invited by the hospital to investigate the death of Igwetu. He said that the inspection would correct the wrong impression in online news that the hospital demanded police report before taking the necessary action. “It is important that the public is well informed about the fact of what happened at the hospital before Igwetu passed on. “The deceased was brought in a precarious situation and the investigation through the video clip has provided evidence on how doctors made efforts to safe Igwetu’s life. “We cannot have such a critically wounded person and fold our arms waiting for police report; this was never the case here. “I am satisfied that the video proved that action was taken immediately by the doctors but her condition was very bad for her to survive. “The hospital, traditionally will never abandon this kind of case, we have a standing policy of not insisting on police report before attending to traumatised patients at Accident and Emergency Department,’’ Wada said. In response, Mr Chidi Izuwah, the Acting Director-General, ICRC, said investigation was carried out and the video evidence showed that the hospital made efforts to provide care for the deceased. Izuwah who led an ICRC management team, stated that the video showed that the hospital provided care for her before she passed on. “When she arrived in the hospital, the doctors quickly came in, took her to the emergency care room and more doctors came in to attend to her while the police was called upon. “This fact has completely disputed the narrative that has been set out on the social media and other platforms. “The law by the National Assembly is now mandatory that when patients with gunshots come to the hospital, you treat them and that’s what we have come here to verify. “We have completed our investigation, interviewed all parties involved and we will post the report on our disclosure portal as we have a responsibility to be transparent to the public. Igwetu was allegedly shot by a police officer, Inspector Benjamin Peter, on July 4 in Central Area District, Abuja; and was taken to the hospital for treatment where she died. A statement by Commissioner of Police in Abuja, Mr Sadiq Bello, stated that necessary disciplinary procedures had been concluded, resulting in the dismissal of Peter. “He (the suspect) has been dismissed from the force and arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction and he is currently on remand awaiting trial. “It was alleged that the lady, one Angela Igwetu stood up and brought out her head through the sunroof of a car, shouting and calling for help that she was kidnapped,’’ he said in the statement. Bello said that the police claimed that they flagged down the vehicle but the driver refused to stop which made the police inspector to shoot and hit the deceased. The commissioner said that the command would not condone act of irresponsibility and incivility or outright criminality on the part of officers and men of the police. He appealed to residents of Abuja to keep calm, assuring the family of the deceased that justice would be done.(NAN) Source: https://legitinfobase..com/2018/07/shot-nysc-member-garki-hospital-did-not.html

Muhammadu Buhari has changed the corruption narrative that the international community had about Nigeria, Permanent Secretary (PS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olukunle Bamgbose has said. Bamgbose told Newsmen in New York that the development was a plus for Nigeria’s global image. President Muhammadu Buhari addresses the participants at the opening ceremony of the International Press Institute (IPI) World Congress 2018 held at the State House Conference Center Abuja. The PS also lauded the appointment of Buhari in January by the African Union to serve as the ‘Champion of the theme of the year’ for the continental body. The AU has anti-corruption as its agenda for the year 2018 with the theme: ‘Winning the Fight Against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation’. Bamgbose said: “The Africa region has recognised the fact that Mr President has taken the gauntlet to fight corruption in all its facets and I think that’s the first thing. “African leaders will recognise you for who you are and I think that’s one recognition that they have given Mr President’’. According to the PS, a lot of things that needed to be done were put in place at that Summit in January in Addis Ababa. “But the most important thing is that unlike before when everybody saw Nigeria as a very corrupt country, I think the narrative has changed now with all the things that Mr President is doing in the country. “Recently, there was the Executive Order that he also signed, where those who are found to be very corrupt would forfeit all their assets, including funds and buildings. “It’s good because the narrative has now changed. “Before, when they mentioned corruption, your heart will jump, especially if you’re a diplomat because you knew the next thing people would be thinking, is Nigeria. “But that narrative has changed now with what Mr President is doing, which I think is a good thing and a plus for Nigeria.’’ Bamgbose said Nigeria’s foreign policy objective was effective enough to protect the interest of Nigeria and its citizens anywhere in the world. According to him, the foreign policy is a derivative of the Constitution and, therefore, does not change irrespective of whoever is in power per time. He, however, said that the tools to put foreign policy objectives into practice are what changed per time. He urged that diplomats must be equipped to deploy the tools effectively. The outgoing PS, while assessing Nigeria’s position among the comity of nations said Nigeria is doing well and is strategically positioned at the sub-region, continent and globally. According to him, the world knows the importance of Nigeria and the country does not need to always tell the world about itself. Bamgbose, who joined the Foreign Service in 1983 and is due to retire in September, said there is the need to instil discipline into the Foreign Service. He said there were a lot of rots when he assumed office and one of the reforms he carried out was to lay emphasis on discipline among the staff. The PS said he also prioritised the welfare of the staff as it was one of the issues causing unhealthy frictions between the union and management. He said he was able to achieve some level of quietness and harmony during his tenure because he insisted that “the right thing must always be done”. He said training, retraining and emphasis on merit rather than “godfathers” syndrome, especially as it affects foreign postings, were among his reforms. Bamgbose stressed the need to give junior staff opportunities to have exposure through foreign posting rather than making it the exclusive preserve of middle or senior cadre officers. The PS described the ministry officials as one of the best and advised them to always exhibit the best characters expected of diplomats the world over. |
