Foreign Affairs › Irreplaceable Loss As Brazil National Museum Is Raised By Inferno (pix) by khalidx(op): 11:42pm On Sep 03, 2018
Officials in Brazil have blamed lack of funding for a huge fire that has ravaged the country's National Museum.
One of the largest anthropology and natural history collections in the Americas was almost totally destroyed in Sunday's fire in Rio de Janeiro.
This included the 12,000-year-old remains of a woman known as "Luzia" - the oldest discovered in Latin America.
There had also been a string of complaints about the dilapidated state of the 200-year-old museum.
"We never had adequate support," its deputy director said after the fire.
Experts had warned for years of a serious fire risk to the building.
Presidential candidate Marina Silva criticised lack of investment.
"Given the financial straits of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and all the other public universities the last three years, this was a tragedy that could be seen coming," Ms Silva, a left-wing politician standing in next month's election, tweeted.
The fire started on Sunday evening, after the building - a 19th Century former royal palace - closed for the day.
The cause is not known, but Culture Minister Sergio Sa Leitao was quoted in Brazilian media as saying it may have been ignited by a small paper hot air balloon landing on the roof.
No injuries have been reported but most of the 20 million items the museum contained went up in flames.
In pictures: Rio museum destroyed in huge blaze
Treasure-trove museum - from a meteorite to a 12,000-year-old skeleton
Brazil's President Michel Temer said in a tweet that it was a "sad day for all Brazilians" as "200 years of work, research and knowledge were lost".
Mr Sa Leitao said it was a "tragedy that could have been avoided" but a reconstruction effort would begin.
'We had to break down doors'
Prof Paulo Buckup, an expert in fish science at the museum, arrived at 19:30 (22:30 GMT) local time to find parts of the building where animal specimens were kept still intact.
"It's unfortunate but the firefighters were not in a position to do anything, to fight anything," he told BBC Brasil's Julia Carneiro.
"They had no water, no ladders, no equipment.
"So we took the initiative to get in to try and save what we could. We had to break down doors. The soldiers helped us carry things."
Prof Buckup rushed into the burning building to save its extensive collection of molluscs rescuing "a few thousand" specimens, a "tiny" part of the collection.
"I don't know how many tens of thousands of insects and crustaceans were lost," he says.
"I feel very sorry for my colleagues, some of whom have worked here for 30 or 40 years. Now all evidence of their work is lost, their lives have lost meaning, too."
What has the reaction been?
A deputy director at the museum, Luiz Fernando Dias Duarte, expressed "immense anger", and accused Brazilian authorities of a "lack of attention".
"We fought years ago, in different governments, to obtain resources to adequately preserve everything that was destroyed today."
Demonstrators gathered at the gates of the museum on Monday morning, protesting against the budget cuts that they blame for the fire. Police were seen firing tear gas.
One issue appears to be the lack of a sprinkler system. Mr Dias Duarte told Globo TV that a $5.3m (£4.1m) modernisation plan agreed in June would have included the installation of modern fire prevention equipment, but only after October's elections.
A major dinosaur exhibition, which was forced to shut following a termite attack five months ago, had recently reopened only thanks to a crowdfunding campaign.
Museum librarian Edson Vargas da Silva told local media that the building had wooden floors and contained "a lot of things that burn very fast", such as paper documents.
Why the lack of funds?
The museum, Brazil's oldest, is managed by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the federal government has been struggling with huge budget imbalances in recent years.
The deficit was about 8% of GDP in 2017, only slightly down from a record 10% two years earlier.
But Rio de Janeiro state is also facing a budget crisis.
Roberto Robadey, a spokesman for the Rio fire department, is quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying that the hydrants closest to the museum were not working and that firefighters had to get water from a nearby lake.
Desperate attempts to salvage artefacts
By Katy Watson, BBC South America correspondent
The pale yellow building is still standing - but the windows are burned out, the roof has gone and its insides are black.
Throughout the day, firefighters, investigators and even museum staff have been going into the building and every so often they have brought out bits of artefacts or anything they think they can salvage from the rubble.
Hundreds of people gathered outside, watching the developments - many of them in tears.
Some researchers and academics I spoke to said they were still hopeful that some material on the ground floor could be saved - that is if it hadn't been crushed by the force of the upper floors collapsing on top of it.
With their knowledge of where the archives were kept, they've been tipping off firefighters on where to go to rescue material in the hope that at least some of Brazil's most important history can be saved.
What did the museum contain?
Its 20 million artefacts included fossils and dinosaur bones.
The jewel in the crown for many visitors was "Luzia".
"Luzia is a priceless loss for everyone interested in civilization," museum director Paulo Knauss told the AFP news agency.
Using her skull, experts had produced a digital image of her face, which was used as the base for a sculpture that was also gutted by the fire.
Another popular exhibit was the Bendegó meteorite, weighing more than five tonnes and discovered in Minas Gerais region in the 18th Century. Images taken in the aftermath suggest it is still intact.
The building was also home to items covering the centuries from the arrival of the Portuguese in the 1500s to the declaration of a republic in 1889.
The ethnology collection had unique pieces from the pre-Columbian era and artefacts from indigenous cultures.
Portugal's royal family transferred the court to the building in 1808, when the country faced the threat of invasion from Napoleon.
The museum was established in 1818, with the aim of promoting scientific research by making its collection available to specialists.
Major fires at world's museums
Jan 2018 - Much of Indonesia's Maritime Museum in Jakarta - which contained Dutch East Indian ship models and cannons - is gutted
July 2017 - Hundreds of objects are destroyed - including three paintings on loan from the Louvre - at the Maritime Museum in Tatihou, France
Apr 2016 - Rare specimens of flora and fauna are destroyed at the National Museum of Natural History in Delhi, India
Oct 2014 - Cutty Sark - one of the world's last tea clippers to be built - is damaged by a fire in London for the second time in seven years
July 1865 - New York City's Barnum's American Museum - whose collections included false artefacts like the "skeleton of a mermaid"- is burned to the ground

Politics › President Buhari Departs For China Today by khalidx(op): 6:40am On Aug 31, 2018
The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari will depart for Beijing, China today, to participate in the 7th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) scheduled to hold between Sept. 3 and Sept. 4.
According to the presidential aide, Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s first engagement in Beijing will be an interactive session with the Nigerian Community in China at the Nigerian Embassy.
He said, before the formal opening of the FOCAC Summit, President Buhari in his capacity as current Chair of ECOWAS, would deliver remarks at the High-Level Dialogue between Chinese and African leaders, business representatives and African entrepreneurs.
He added that the Nigerian President was scheduled to join President Jinping and other African leaders for the opening and roundtable sessions of the 2018 FOCAC Beijing Summit.
The theme of the summit is “Towards an even Stronger China-Africa Community with a shared Future.”

Shehu revealed that after the FOCAC Summit, President Buhari would hold bilateral meetings with President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang to discuss infrastructure financing for strategic projects in Nigeria.
He stated that their discussion would also cover the upgrading of Nigeria-China relations “from strategic partnership to comprehensive strategic partnership.”
“The President will also use the occasion of his audience with the Chinese leadership to assess the progress made so far in Chinese interventions in Nigeria’s key priority infrastructure projects, particularly ongoing projects in the railway and power sectors.
“It is noteworthy that since the last FOCAC VI Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa in December 2015 – the first attended by the Nigerian leader – and his successful State visit to China in April 2016, the current administration has pushed forward practical cooperation with China in the areas of infrastructure construction, trade, investments, finance, power, agriculture, education cooperation, among others,” he said.

It would be recalled that President Buhari has consistently acknowledged Chinese support for infrastructure development in Nigeria.
In January 2018 while receiving the Board of Directors of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, the President had said:
“We send our gratitude to the Chinese for all their support to Nigeria. Since independence, no country has helped our country on infrastructural development like the Chinese.
“In some projects, the Chinese help us with 85 per cent payment, and soft loans that span 20 years. No country has done that for us.’’
The statement said President Buhari would be accompanied to Beijing by his wife, Aisha, who was scheduled to participate in a Spouses’ Programme on China-Africa at the Great Hall of the People, under the theme, ‘‘Joining Hands for a Future of AIDS.”
Also on the President’s entourage are Governors Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, Akinwunmi Ambode, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and Rochas Anayo Okorocha of Bauchi, Lagos, Jigawa and Imo States respectively.

Others are Senators Abdullahi Adamu, George Akume, Godswill Akpabio and Aliyu Wamakko representing Nasarawa, Benue, Akwa Ibom and Sokoto States respectively.
Also accompanying the President are: the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi; Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and Minister of FCT, Muhammad Bello
Others are Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah; Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma; Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu; Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, and Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika.
The National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno; the Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar; and the Group Managing Director (NNPC), Maikanti Baru are also part of the president’s entourage.

Foreign Affairs › How Can A President Be Impeached by khalidx(op): 6:50pm On Aug 22, 2018
Donald Trump's former campaign chairman and his ex-lawyer have both admitted financial crimes, increasing speculations the 45th president could face impeachment.

Michael Cohen, the president's longtime lawyer and "fixer", admitted to eight charges on Tuesday, including campaign finance violations, tax fraud and false statements to a bank - and has threatened to "spill all" on Mr Trump.

Paul Manafort, the president's former campaign manager, was found guilty of eight charges on the same day - five tax fraud charges, one charge of hiding foreign bank accounts and two counts of bank fraud.

Mr Cohen was part of Mr Trump's inner circle for many years
Image:
Michael Cohen admitted to campaign finance violations
They will both be going to jail - Cohen has struck a plea deal in return for significantly reduced jail time, while Manafort could be in prison for 80 years.

Both Manafort and Cohen's convictions have left Mr Trump at his most vulnerable and have raised questions about his judgement and whether he could be also be convicted and impeached over the matter.

But how would he be impeached and what would it take for him to be ousted as president?

What is impeachment?

Impeachment is when a legislative body formally levels charges - which have to be very serious - against a high official of government, including the president.

It does not mean automatic removal from office and is only the first step towards removal.

It is not a criminal trial but a process to remove a high-level official, usually only a president in the US.

What does a president have to do to get impeached?

The US constitution says the president "shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanours".

What constitutes "high crimes or misdemeanours" has been the subject of much legal debate.

Who has the power to impeach a president?

Anybody can initiate the process, from a member of the house to a judge or even a public petition.

They refer the official to the US house of representatives who will then impeach them.

A simply majority vote is then required from the house for the process to proceed to the senate, which has the power to try impeachments to ultimately oust a president from office.

The impeachment procedure starts in the house of representatives

The impeachment procedure starts in the house of representatives
What happens when the impeachment process reaches the senate?

The senate chamber is where the real drama happens, with senators acting like jurors.

A collection of house members are made "managers" to present the prosecution case while the impeached official has the right to mount a defence with their own lawyers.

It is usually overseen by the vice-president but for a presidential impeachment the chief justice of Supreme Court presides.

The US Capitol Building is home to the Senate and House of Representatives

Two thirds of the senate has to vote to remove an impeached president
The senate then decides on whether to convict or acquit, with two thirds - 67 senators - needed to finally remove the accused.

Senators can also decide whether to disqualify the accused from holding future offices.

There is no turning back as someone who is ousted cannot appeal, according to the constitution.

Which presidents have been impeached?

Two occupants of the Oval Office have seen impeachment proceedings launched against them, but no president has been successfully removed from office through the process.

Andrew Johnson

The Democrat president was impeached in 1869 after clashing with congress (then controlled by the Radical Republicans, a faction of the Republican party) over his ideas for Reconstruction, the rebuilding of the southern states after the South's defeat in the Civil War.

US President Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson was impeached after clashing with congress
He was let off the hook after receiving 35 guilty votes on three issues - just one too few votes to get the two thirds majority.

To stop any further embarrassment the Radical Republicans halted any more votes, saving his presidency. He failed to win the Democratic subsequent nomination.

Bill Clinton

The Democrat is the second and last president to have been impeached.

In 1998 he was impeached on perjury and the obstruction of justice with regards to his affair with Monica Lewinsky, a 21-year-old White House intern.

He had denied having a relationship with her after the news broke of their relationship.

White House intern Monica Lewinsky meeting President Bill Clinton at the White House in 1998

Bill Clinton was impeached over the Monica Lewinsky affair in 1998
But during a sexual harassment case brought by Ms Lewinsky, the president acknowleged to a grand jury that he had an affair with her.

Five weeks after Mr Clinton was impeached he was acquitted after 55 senators rejected the perjury charge and half rejected the obstruction of justice charge.

He then apologised for his behaviour and continued as president until completing his second term in office in 2001 with the highest ever end-of-office approval ratings.

Wait, what about Richard Nixon?

The Republican was not actually impeached - a common misunderstanding.

President Richard Nixon developed the 'Madman Theory' to keep adversaries guessing

President Nixon resigned before he could be impeached
During the Watergate scandal, involving illegal activities such as bugging offices by his supporters, Mr Nixon resigned in 1974 before he could be impeached, which the senate had already been preparing for.

He was then pardoned by his successor, Gerald Ford.

So, how likely is it that President Trump could be impeached?

Nobody can be certain, but the likelihood of impeachment could increase after the mid-term elections in November.

Mr Trump's Republicans currently control both the house and the senate, but the Democrats have hopes of regaining control of the two legislative branches.

No president has been impeached while their own party held the majority in both houses, so if the opposition has control of congress, the risk of impeachment will rise.

And if Cohen makes good on his promise to "spill all" to the special counsel looking into collusion with Russia, the president will be on shaky ground.

Is there any other way a president can be removed from office?

Yes. The 25th amendment states that the vice-president and a majority of congress or top officials may remove the president if he can no longer "discharge the powers and duties of his office".

The vice-president then becomes acting president.

This can be used for when a president is incapacitated during major surgery.

However, Ronald Reagan's administration considered using it to remove him after he showed increasing signs of ineptitude.

Foreign Affairs › London Bridge Is Down? by khalidx(op): 11:18am On Aug 22, 2018
Have you ever wondered how the Royal family of England announce the death and how they make preparations for the burial and all it cost??
Some fascinating Facts
See what happens when the London bridge is down

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, the longest living and reigning Monarch in British history is 91 years old, and like all human beings on earth, she will die soon. Once she dies, there's a protocol, 65 years in the making, that will be initiated with the phrase "London Bridge is Down" that will set off her succession plan.
Upon her last breath, this phrase will be uttered and immediately her private secretary will contact the Prime Minister of England and on a special line that only connects from Buckingham Palace to 10 Downing Street, and speak these words "London Bridge is Down." The Prime Minister then instructs her staff to communicate the information to the Foreign Office of the United Kingdom. The Foreign Office then relays the message to the 52 countries of the Commonwealth nations who still pledge allegiance to the queen, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, Bahamas, Granada etc. Once this is done, then the news outlets will be informed.
Every commercial radio station in the UK has what is called an Oviet light. A blue light triggered by a central office in London. Once this light is triggered, all the DJs and programmers at these stations know that a member of the royal family has passed away, and they proceed to cut off whatever program is on the air at the time and begin to play a prepared playlist of somber music. They don't know exactly who's dead at this point but the music is to serve in anticipation of the news to come. The BBC has a special alert system that notifies them of the Queen's death, the message "Oh Dear" flashes to them. Every TV presenter for the BBC has a black tie on set, and in case of women, a black dress or scarf on standby. Before going on Air, the presenters will switch to the black tie or scarf or dress. BBC1 the main BBC network will proceed to show the Queen's portraits and play the national anthem. After the anthem, the presenter then reads these words:
"This is BBC Television News. Buckingham Palace has just announced the death of the Queen." Then the coverage starts.
All over the country, all Union Jacks are lowered to half mast. However, the Royal Standard, the flag of the royal family, must remain at full mast, by law. It is British law that this flag remains flying at full mast because there is always a living monarch.
TV networks have been preparing for this day for decades. The life and times of Queen Elizabeth segments have been long recorded and on standby. Different experts on the royal family have already signed exclusive deals and contracts to appear on different networks following the death. As of today, Sky TV and ITV continuously rehearse the coverage of the death of the Queen, substituting her name with "Mrs. Robinson." For the next 12 days following her death, no comedy shows will be shown on any British TV station.
The Queen's death will be one of the greatest news events in human history. London will shut down, even airline pilots will announce it to their passengers and an emergency meeting of the Parliament will be called.
The total economic impact of her death is estimated at $8 Billion. This includes the burial costs, the loss of productivity for the day of the funeral and the day of the coronation of the next monarch which both days will be declared public holidays ($3Billion each day in lost revenues). The Bank Of England will phase out all monies with the Queen's image and replace them with the next Monarch. However, there are several other countries in the world whose money has the Queen's image, they too will have to phase them out.
The Queen's death will probably be the single most viewed event in human history!

Health › Do You Know Why Green Color Is So Commonly Used In Hospitals? by khalidx(op): 10:20am On Aug 22, 2018
I always wondered that why color green is used in hospitals not red or blue. All things in operation theaters even the dress which doctors used to wear during operation are also green. One day I finally decided to gather information about the psychology of green color and its history, how it became the identity of hospitals.

Psychology of green: Green is the color of nature.Plenty of things in this world contains green in it. It not only symbolizes growth but also connected to life and peace. It is the complimentary color of red. It gives pleasant effect to eyes and mind, reduces eye fatigue also. Green is the color of balance, as it is found in the middle of the spectrum.
Green in hospitals:
Green color also well connected with medical accessories. Green first used in a San Francisco hospital in 1914. An American surgeon firstly used spinach green color for the hospital environment. He created green operating theater with green walls and floors. He selected spinach green environment as it is opposite of hemoglobin red. According to him, his eyes can examine more properly the details and texture of wound which he is treating under green environment. After him, many other surgeons followed his idea.
It was believed that with the help of color therapy, green became the part of hospital culture. In 1930, a hospital decorator and architect William Ludlow used green color and symbolize it with recovery and growth. He said that: “White is negative; the convalescent needs the therapeutic reaction of the positive colors that nature has spread so lavishly for her children… Our eyes were made to find rest and contentment in soft greens, pale blues, an occasional touch of red, but above all, the glorious golden yellow of the sunshine.”
Why not white or red?
Red cannot be used because the color of blood is also red, it will be difficult for doctors to operate and examine if the whole environment of hospital become red. In order to distinguish between the colors, green was given preference over red. Red is a dark color, it is the color of danger and hotness. This cannot influence the eyes of patient and it may create the feeling of fear in him.
If we talk about white color, it also doesn’t go well with the hospital environment. The combination of bright lights in Operation Theater and all stuff may confuse the surgeon and can divert his attention. Blood is also prominent in the white dress which may frighten the patient.
After all, this what I conclude is that GREEN suits the hospital stuff precisely. It is the color of herbs which are used in many medicines, also symbolizes nature and relax our mind. It gives refreshing look to the patient eyes.

Health › Nigeria Ranks 8th In Weed Smoking Countries Of The World by khalidx(op): 4:16am On Aug 16, 2018
Africa Has A Fair share

Out of all the hard drugs in the world, Cannabis Sativa, popularly known as Indian Hemp or Marijuana is the most consumed. In most countries, the abuse of cannabis usually take up a very much greater percentage among other drug abuse cases. While Marijuana is tolerated in some countries, just in the name of decriminalization, it is absolutely illegal in some others. It is only in North Korea, that Indian hemp is legal. All the same, legal or not legal, it has been discovered that even in countries where the consumption, possession and cultivation of cannabis is totally illegal, there is still very high rate of cannabis consumption there. It’ll be nice to point out that one major vice prevalent in these countries where marijuana is largely smoked or used is that of insecurity. Another surprising thing about this ranking is that India actually didn’t make it to the list. Maybe its high time we change the name to some other country like…
However, the ranking in this article was not strictly done according to the highest or lowest figures obtained. This is as a result of the constant fluctuation in the exact facts and figures with which such ranking could be determined. But on a general overview, these 17 countries are among the places where cannabis is most smoked.
Most Weed Smokers of the World

15. Australia
Though there is “zero tolerance” of cannabis in Australia, it is never a serious deterrent to those who feel they are feeding on the ‘good things of their land’. About 10% of the entire country’s population cannot do without marijuana on a daily basis.

14. Spain
Buying, selling, possessing, or consuming cannabis in public locations is decriminalized in Spain, meaning the punishment is merely a small fine and confiscation. Possession or use in a public place can result in administrative sanctioning. Authorities deem that possession of about 40 grams is an amount worth pursuing for punishment. All the same, Spain remains one of the countries well-known for being “very patriotic” to marijuana. More than 10% of the country’s population smoke “ganja”.

13. Zambia (17.7%)
While the use of cannabis has long been widespread in Zambia, recent rapid increases in consumption among the youth both in urban and rural areas have led tribal and government authorities to take a firm stance against its cultivation, sale and use. It is widely believed that at least 75% of all psychiatric patients in Zambia are there as a result of drug abuse, including that of cannabis. The government is still looking into how to reduce the increasing prevalent use of the drug in Zambia.

12. New Zealand
Marijuana is still illegal, and burning it down in Kiwi land is not uncommon. But almost 15 percent of people ages 16 to 64 enjoy the “natural gift of God”. Steep fines and short prison time has been slapped on unauthorized possessors, but recent steps to relax these laws have been introduced. The Green Party works to decriminalize users and holders, and a 2011 Law Commission review said that the anti-cannabis legislation needs to be revisited. What we are saying here is that despite all moves to curb or regulate the use of cannabis in New Zealand, she still ranks with countries where it is mostly smoked.

11. United States
Though it’s illegal at the federal level, the U.S. is gradually becoming much more weed-friendly. This may be as a result of the much ado that is given to human rights recently. It is ending up legalizing even the most bizarre practices just in the name of rights and freedom. It seems that most Americans support legalization as about 15% of the country’s population cannot do without the drugs.

10. Portugal
Portugal is extremely progressive in its treatment of drug offenses, and became the first country in the world to decriminalize all drug use (for personal consumption) in 2001, opting instead to treat drug use as a sickness and enforce treatment rather than punishment. In 2001, the country decriminalized drug possession, and people are allowed to possess up to 25 grams of marijuana for personal consumption. This seems to let everyone loose to trying out all forms of hard drugs of which cannabis is the most tried and sustained.

9. Jamaica
Jamaica is another country that has an international reputation for having a culture rooted deeply in cannabis – with Rastafarianism revolving around the spiritual use of cannabis. The cultivation, sale and possession of cannabis is illegal in Jamaica, but due to its cultural relevance and acceptance it is often very openly produced, sold and consumed with very little legal repercussion. Although marijuana is illegal in Jamaica, high-quality strains are offered everywhere.

8. Nigeria (14.3%)
On the world cannabis consumption chart Nigeria trails behind only Ghana in Africa. From the NDLEA records, about 80 percent of substances abuses, trade and use in Nigeria is cannabis. It is most rampant in Lagos, the biggest commercial city in Nigeria. At Oshodi, a commercial hub in Lagos, large sections of the railway lines have been colonised by marijuana smokers. All day long, smokers freely smoke the drug in public view. Those who do the selling, usually boys as young as 12 years old, are often scruffy-looking and hang around in clusters. They clutch black nylon bags containing the drugs and make catcalls – a peculiar form of advertisement – to potential buyers.

7. Czech Republic (15.2%)
The case in Czech Republic is that the use of all drugs is decriminalised. That is one of the things that created room for the free consumption or smoking of cannabis. Subsequently, the use of marijuana for medical treatment was made legal by the government on the first of April, 2013. It is now tolerated (but technically still illegal) to grow up to 5 plants at once for personal use. This normally means that as long as you are being sensibly discreet and not offending anyone the police should leave you alone. That’ why a great number of people in Czech republic are “grimly savouring this wonderful gift of God”.

6. Iceland
If you have a close observation of the contents of this article, you’ll get to realise that it is even in the countries where there are stringent measures against the use of cannabis that smoke the drug most. Despite the fact that the possession, cultivation, sale, and consumption of marijuana are all illegal in Iceland. In particular, the possession, cultivation and sale of this drug are heavily penalised. Anyone caught doing these things in Iceland faces the possibility of a jail sentence. Yet, almost 20% of Iceland’s population smoke marijuana. That means in Iceland, over 55,000 out of 320,000 people smoke weed.

5. Uruguay
Uruguay is one of the very few countries where possession for personal use is legal, (even though what qualifies as a personal amount has not been defined). Uruguay is set to make the country the first in the world to create a state-run marijuana industry by fixing the price at a point low enough to squeeze the black market and allowing the government to control cultivation and distribution, come April 2014. In an effort to curb traffickers, the country is set to legalize the sale, cultivation, and distribution of cannabis, and plans to begin to sell it for $1 a gram.

4. Netherlands
The Netherlands have incredibly relaxed marijuana laws and acceptance of people smoking in public spaces, such as bars and cafes, especially in Amsterdam. Possession of a small amount is illegal, but tolerated (decriminalized). It is totally ok to have up to 5g on your person in public and up to 30g in a private residence.

3. Ghana
In Ghana, smoking of India hemp among youth is high; it is the cheapest and most widely abused drug. At Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra, numerous youth from the northern part of Ghana smoke Indian hemp. In Dormaa Traditional Area of Ghana, there is high rate of Indian hemp smoking among the youth including school children. 21.5% of Ghanaians, aged from 15 to age 64 smoke India Hemp. The contradictory thing in the case of Ghana is that Indian hemp is illegal in all forms – private or public consumption, possession, cultivation or sales of the drug. Yet, the smoking of Indian hemp in this African country continue to sky-rocket.

2. Cambodia
I call that of Cambodia, “nominal illegality”. Yes, what I mean by that is that the use of marijuana is illegal in Cambodia but it is still freely used by people there. There is a lot of historical significance of cannabis among the Khmer people which has made it very hard for the government to remove it from mainstream use – to the point where they have pretty much given up trying. Many restaurants even cook with it or offer it as a side dish!

1. North Korea
We do not even need figures before we conclude that it is in North Korea that Indian Hemp is consumed most, seeing that it is the only country of the world where the consumption, possession and cultivation of cannabis both for private and public use is accepted. The truth is that, in North Korea, they smoke marijuana for very different reasons. They don’t smoke just to get high and laugh at nothing, they do it to save money and as a break from the universal cheap local cigarettes. In the black markets of North Korea, marijuana is commonly sold at a cheap price and is easily obtainable. Therefore, the drug is especially popular among the lower classes of North Korean society. After a day of hard manual labor, it is common for North Korean workers to smoke marijuana as a way to relax and soothe tight or sore muscles. The shocking conclusion is that marijuana is not considered a drug in North Korea and is even sold at the food markets!
However, we continue to warn and create the awareness, especially for the naive ones, that smoking Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp or Marijuana) has serious negative health repercussions!

Politics › BREAKING: Kaduna Assembly Deputy Speaker Resigns After Defecting From APC To PDP by khalidx(op): 8:52pm On Aug 15, 2018
John Audu-Kwaturu, the lawmaker representing Kachia Constituency, has lost his position as Deputy Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly following his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Audu-Kwaturu and another lawmaker, Junaidu Yakubu, who represents Kudan Constituency, had defected from APC to PDP, but Aminu Abdullahi Shaghali, Speaker of the Assembly, said since there was no crisis or rancour in APC at both the state and the national levels, Audu-Kwaturu had to forfeit his position.

The lawmakers therefore elected Nuhu Goroh Shadalafiya, the member representing Kagarko Constituency as the new Deputy Speaker, following nomination by Dahiru Liman, the lawmaker representing Makera Constituency, and seconding by Ahmed Mohammed, who represents Zaria Kewaye Constituency.

Until his emergence as the new Deputy Speaker, Shadalafiya was Chairman of the House Committee on Information.

He was sworn in immediately.

Foreign Affairs › Bread Shortage Hits Sudan by khalidx(op): 1:30pm On Aug 15, 2018
Bread shortages have hit Sudan, with wheat traders blaming a foreign currency crisis for shortages of the staple that have left people queuing for hours outside bakeries.
Sudan’s economy has been struggling since the south seceded in 2011, taking with it three-quarters of its oil output and depriving it of a crucial source of foreign currency.
The crisis has deepened over the past year as a black market for U.S. dollars has effectively replaced the formal banking system after the Sudanese pound was devalued, making it more difficult to import essential supplies such as wheat.
A doubling of the price of bread in January triggered demonstrations after the government eliminated subsidies, although so far there was no sign of protests this time.
At Banet neighbourhood in the town of Omdurman, in Khartoum, dozens of people stood in a long line outsidethe Modern Bakery.
“This is unbearable,” said 53-year-old Abdullah Mahmoud, a day labourer, who said he had been queuing for two hours for bread.
“I had been here since the morning and I still don’t have any bread.”
Fatima Yassin, 36, in a queue for women, said: “Everything is expensive and bread is not available.
“We have a difficult life and the government doesn’t care about us.”
Similar queues were seen in other cities near the capital.
Sudan imported 2 million tonnes of wheat in 2017, the government said in December, compared with 445,000 tonnes produced locally.
One Khartoum bakery owner, Ahmed Saleh, said he had had no flour since Monday.
“We stopped working since yesterday because we did not get our share of flour,” he told Reuters.
BLACK MARKET
Any flare-up over shortages could prove tricky for the government. In January, authorities arrested a prominent opposition leader and confiscated newspapers to try to stop unrest from spreading.
On Aug. 3, Sudan’s ruling party announced that it would back any new bid by President Omar al-Bashir, to run again in the 2020 election, a move that would require a constitutional amendment.
Government officials were not immediately available to comment on the crisis.
But the Khartoum state governor, Abdel-Rahim Mohammed Hussein, said in remarks carried by state news agency SUNA on Monday that the state would receive its share of wheat supplies in the “next couple of days”, without elaborating.
Private sector wheat traders, who were given responsibility for imports by the government at the start of this year, blamed the flour shortages on the foreign currency shortages.
One trader said that businessmen were increasingly being forced to buy foreign currency at a higher rate on the black market to finance imports.
“At the same time, the government sets the sale price for flour at an unreal dollar rate,” one trader told Reuters.
“We cannot sell flour at a loss,” he added.
The price of the Sudanese pound had been declining since the beginning of the year after the government devalued the currency to 18 per U.S. dollar, more than double its peg of 6.7 pounds to the dollar.
The pound, which has since been devalued further and is now officially set at 29 pounds to the dollar, was trading at 40 pounds to the dollar on the black market on Tuesday.

Business › Saudi Arabia Shops Use Buharis Name To Attract Customers by khalidx(op): 9:10am On Aug 15, 2018
To some shop owners in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, it may be difficult to attract foreign customers to their shops due to language barrier.

But some of the shops owners make their business establishments to stand out from the rest, because they can speak languages like Hausa and English to attract Nigerians and other customers from English speaking countries.

In addition, however, these businessmen observe what the foreigners especially Nigerians love and respect back home to get patronage.

This came to notice when onwers of a Jallabiya shop (Long Arabian gown) in Madina sighted the Nigerian pilgrims as they shouted “Sai Buhari” to attract them.
Unarguably, “Sai Buhari” is a common phrase in Northern Nigeria right from the time General Muhammadu Buhari was prodded into politics in 2002.

At the moment, “Sai Buhari” is arguably becoming popular even in the southern part of the country.
“Sai Buhari”, as it was observed, is a business tactic use by some shop owners to attract patronage from Nigerian pilgrims.

2018 Hajj media team from Kaduna state spoke with some of these traders in Medina, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to find out why they use President Muhammadu Buhari’s name to attract patronage.

Muhammad and Afnan are Bengalese who own a Jallabiya shop in Medina said they use President Buhari’s name to attract patronage from Nigerian pilgrims because over the years, they observed that Nigerians have so much love respect for President Buhari.

Health › Dangers Of Instant Noodles:chronic Inflammation, Weight Gain, Alzheimer’s Parkin by khalidx(op): 5:39pm On Aug 14, 2018
Instant noodles are a popular go-to lunch or dinner for those who are strapped for time (or cash), like college students. While you probably don’t consider them a health food, you may think they’re not that bad, or, at least, not as bad as eating a burger and fries or a fast-food burrito.
In a first-of-its-kind experiment, however, Dr. Braden Kuo of Massachusetts General Hospital may make you reconsider your love of instant noodles (assuming you have one).
He used a pill-sized camera to see what happens inside your stomach and digestive tract after you eat ramen noodles, one common type of instant noodles. The results were astonishing…
Ramen Noodles Don’t Break Down After Hours of Digestion
In the video above, you can see ramen noodles inside a stomach. Even after two hours, they are remarkably intact, much more so than the homemade ramen noodles, which were used as a comparison. This is concerning for a number of reasons.
For starters, it could be putting a strain on your digestive system, which is forced to work for hours to break down this highly processed food (ironically, most processed food is so devoid of fiber that it gets broken down very quickly, interfering with your blood sugar levels and insulin release)

When food remains in your digestive tract for such a long time, it will also impact nutrient absorption, but, in the case of processed ramen noodles, there isn’t much nutrition to be had. Instead, there is a long list of additives, including the toxic preservative tertiary butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ).
This additive will likely remain in your stomach along with the seemingly invincible noodles, and no one knows what this extended exposure time may do to your health. Common sense suggests it’s not going to be good…
Five Grams of Noodle Preservative, TBHQ, Is Lethal
TBHQ, a byproduct of the petroleum industry, is often listed as an “antioxidant,” but it’s important to realize it is a synthetic chemical with antioxidant properties – not a natural antioxidant. The chemical prevents oxidation of fats and oils, thereby extending the shelf life of processed foods.
It’s a commonly used ingredient in processed foods of all kinds (including
McDonald’s chicken nuggets, Kellogg’s CHEEZ-IT crackers, Reese’s peanut butter cups, Wheat Thins crackers, Teddy Grahams, Red Baron frozen pizza,
Taco Bell beans, and much more).
But you can also find it in varnishes, lacquers, and pesticide products, as well as cosmetics and perfumes to reduce the evaporation rate and improve stability.
At its 19th and 21st meetings, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives determined that TBHQ was safe for human consumption at levels of 0-0.5 mg/kg of body weight.
However, the Codex commission set the maximum allowable limits up to between 100 to as much as 400 mg/kg, depending on the food it’s added to. (Chewing gum is permitted to contain the highest levels of TBHQ.) In the US, the Food and Drug Administration requires that TBHQ must not exceed 0.02 percent of its oil and fat content.
So there’s quite a discrepancy in supposedly “safe” limits, but it’s probably best to have little or no
exposure to this toxicant, as exposure to five grams can be lethal and, according to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives, exposure to just one gram of TBHQ can cause:
Nausea and vomiting
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Delirium
Sense of suffocation
Collapse
While TBHQ is not suspected to be a persistent toxicant, meaning your body is probably able to eliminate it so that it does not bioaccumulate, if you eat instant noodles your body might be getting prolonged exposures. This is concerning, to say the least. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), based on animal studies health hazards associated with TBHQ include:
Liver effects at very low doses
Positive mutation results from in vitro tests on mammalian cells
Biochemical changes at very low doses
Reproductive effects at high doses
Eating Instant Noodles Linked to Metabolic Syndrome
If you’re still considering ramen noodles for lunch, you should know a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that women who consumed more instant noodles had a significantly greater risk of metabolic syndrome than those who ate less, regardless of their overall diet or exercise habits.
Women who ate instant noodles more than twice a week were 68 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome — a group of symptoms such as central obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting blood sugar, elevated fasting triglycerides, and low levels of HDL cholesterol.
Having three or more of the symptoms increases your risk of developing
diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Past research also analyzed overall nutrient intake between instant-noodle consumers and non-consumers, and found, as you might suspect, that eating instant noodles contributes little value to a healthy diet.
The instant noodle consumers had a significantly lower intake of important nutrients like protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, vitamin A, niacin, and vitamin C compared with non-consumers. Those who ate instant noodles also had an excessive intake of energy, unhealthy fats and sodium (just one package may contain 2,700 milligrams of sodium).
What Else Is in a Package of Instant Noodles?
Aside from a lot of sodium and the preservative TBHQ, what else is found in a typical serving of instant noodles?
Prevent Disease reported: “The dried noodle block was originally created by flash frying cooked noodles, and this is still the main method used in Asian countries, though air-dried noodle blocks are favored in Western countries. The main ingredients of the dried noodle are wheat flour, palm oil, and salt. Common ingredients of the flavoring powder are salt, monosodium glutamate, seasoning, and sugar.
Benzopyrene
…In June 2012, the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) found Benzopyrene (a cancer-causing substance) in six brands of noodles made by Nong Shim Company Ltd. Although the KFDA said the amounts were minuscule and not harmful, Nong Shim did identify particular batches of noodles with a problem, prompting a recall by October 2012.”
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
The monosodium glutamate (MSG) in instant noodles is reason enough to avoid them. MSG is an excitotoxin, which means it overexcites your nerve cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain dysfunction and damage to varying degrees — and potentially even triggering or worsening learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and more.
Glutamic Acid
Part of the problem is that free glutamic acid (MSG is approximately 78 percent free glutamic acid) is the same neurotransmitter that your brain, nervous system, eyes, pancreas, and other organs use to initiate certain processes in your body. Not to mention, MSG is also used to fatten up mice for scientific study. Yes, MSG is the perfect obesity drug . If you want to achieve your ideal body weight and health, avoid MSG at all costs.
Return to Whole, Living Foods for Optimal Health
Occasionally eating a package of instant noodles clearly won’t kill you, but when you make a habit of substituting convenience foods for real food, it’s only a matter of time before health problems will likely develop.
Instant noodles are a prime example of the types of processed foods you want to avoid as much as possible, as they are virtually guaranteed to make you sick and fat if you indulge too much (and “too much” may be as little as a couple of times a week).
Processed foods encourage weight gain and chronic disease because they’re high in sugar, fructose, refined carbohydrates, and artificial ingredients, and low in nutrients and fiber. Processed foods are addictive and designed to make you overeat; they also encourage excessive food cravings, leading to weight gain.
Eating processed foods also promotes insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, which are hallmarks of most chronic and/or serious diseases. On the other hand, people have thrived on vegetables, meats, eggs, fruits, and other whole foods for centuries, while processed foods were only recently invented.
Ditching processed foods requires that you plan your meals in advance, but if you take it step-by-step as described in my nutrition plan , it’s quite possible, and manageable, to painlessly remove processed foods from your diet.
You can try scouting out your local farmer’s markets for in-season produce that is priced to sell, and planning your meals accordingly, but you can also use this same premise with supermarket sales.
You can generally plan a week of meals at a time, making sure you have all ingredients necessary on hand, and then do any prep work you can ahead of time so that dinner is easy to prepare if you’re short on time (and you can use leftovers for lunches the next day, so you don’t have to resort to instant noodles).

Travel › Lagos, Nigeria Is The Third Worst City To Live In - Economist Intelligence Unit by khalidx(op): 2:03pm On Aug 14, 2018
Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve center, is the third worst city to live in among 140 cities worldwide. The revelation is according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU’s 2018 ranking of the world’s most liveable cities. The city was ranked 138th of the 140 countries ranked by the EIU.
With a relatively low score of 38.5 per cent, the city was just a little above Syria’s war-torn capital, Damascus, and Bangladesh’s Dhaka. Both cities are hotbeds of violence, destruction and war.
The new ranking saw the Australian capital, Melbourne, lose the title of world’s most liveable city after a seven-year reign after dropping to second by just 0.7 percent. The city was piped to the post by Vienna, which received an overall score of 99.1 percent. According to the EIU, Austria’s capital’s rise to the top was attributed to increased security scores due to a return to relative stability across much of Europe after high-profile terrorist attacks in recent years. The annual list assesses stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure in 140 different cities of the world.
On a larger scale, the ranking showed, global liveability has improved for the second year in a row, increasing from 74.8 per cent last year to 75.7 per cent in 2018.
In the new ranking, published Monday, Japan’s Osaka and Tokyo have now moved up into the top ten, coming in third and seventh place respectively. Both cities achieved their highest ranking on the survey this year thanks to a decline in crime rates as well as improvements in public transportation.
According to the report summary, “Osaka stands out especially, having climbed six positions, to third place, over the past six months, closing the gap with Melbourne.
“It is now separated from the former top-ranked city by a mere 0.7 of a percentage point. Osaka’s improvements in scores for quality and availability of public transportation, as well as a consistent decline in crime rates, have contributed to higher ratings in the infrastructure and stability categories respectively.”
Hamburg and Helsinki, that held tenth and ninth place last year, have dropped out of the top ten, while this year’s ninth place spot went to Copenhagen, which achieved a score of 96.8 per cent.
Canada, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver also performed relatively well, the report said. The report noted that global business centres tend to be victims of their own success because the ‘big city’ buzz they enjoy could overstretch infrastructure and cause higher crime rates. It noted that New York (57th), London (48th) and Paris (19th), for instance, are all prestigious hubs with numerous recreational activities but they all suffer from higher levels of crime, congestion and public transport problems.
The report showed without much surprise that Syria’s war-torn capital, Damascus, continues to languish at the bottom of the list, with an overall score of 30.7 per cent. It was followed by Bangladesh’s Dhaka and Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial centre.
