Sexton got 4yr/72mil as part of the deal |
Called the Cleveland trade but totally whiffed on the compensation. A backcourt of Garland and Donovan is not that bad especially with Mobley and Allen cleaning up things on the inside. |
birdman:Tanking with Chet, I seriously doubt that, just for the fact they already have too many young players who need minutes to show if they have it or not. Also SGA is on a Max and, will they seriously continue to pay him just to tank. IMHO if Chet was not hurt and they ended up not fighting for a play in spot, then something had to give. PS: IMHO there can be such a thing, as too much young talent on a team and OKC is heading there. |
Roland17:The thing is, his injury just put them back into the Victor Wayembama sweep stakes, because I think they now have a good excuse to tank again this upcoming season. |
The tables are set for a great season. Nets, Celtics, GSW, Clippers, Bucks and the Sixers if Harden gets back to all-nba form, all have a legitimate case for winning it all next season. |
The real issue with the WNBA is one of time. The league is about 25years old and on paper it is built for a demographic that as at the time of its inception had other things to entertain them. If you look at the nba, nfl even European football ball leagues in their 1st 25 yrs of existence one thing that is noticeable is that the players were not as well off as their peers today, most of the early pioneers in sports had to have 2nd jobs. Women leagues of every kind has to go through the growing pains that the men's leagues also went through. They need to first get the sports to the young kids, who if they fall in love with the sport will help create the bed rock of the fan base that can make it a commercial success in the future, just as the men's league all did. Most of the fans of all men's league fall into three categories, people who played when young, or people who got introduced to the game by either their father or the father figure in their life, or guys who got introduced to the sport by a friend or friends who fall into one of the 1st two categories. The fact is historically there was a time men were not watching the sports we all enjoy today in the numbers that enabled players to become rich from playing them. |
birdman:If their problem was shooting 3s that would even be better. Their offense is so static, it's just KD and Kyrie taking turns, which makes it very easy for good defenses to key in on them because they are simply predictable. |
Roland17:A legend on and off the court |
The Cavs are offering 3yr/40mil to Sexton, that's what injury can do to a players value. Always secure the bag as soon as possible. |
aliondo:It only makes sense if we look at it from the standpoint of money. The Celtics ownership have an aversion to paying the luxury tax, they pay it when they have no choice, but every indication points to the fact that they're the opposite of GSW ownership who are willing to pay the luxury tax as long as it gives them a good chance at winning a championship. So maybe they told Brad that if they will be paying the huge tax bill this upcoming season he better guarantee the 18th banner. So the only option to do that is to bring in KD without gutting your core. This is my own conjecture on the whole situation and I am not claiming that it is a fact ![]() |
Android17:Exactly, this is what I keep talking about when people accuse players of asking for trades. JB less than 3months ago was the Celtics best player in the finals and without so much as a heads-up they were throwing him in for a trade. If teams are not going to be held to the contracts they signed, why should players be held to the same. I just hope when JBs current contract runs out, he prioritizes himself and does what is best for him because the team will always do that. |
benji93:Absolutely, the current guys have all their bad moments digitally available at the touch of a button. They are competing against memories of only positive play. |
A40:Agreed that nobody dominates every game, but why is it expected of this current generation. All it takes is 1 ok/average game for someone to call a great player a choker or some other name. As for the Glove, whenever both he and MJ were on the court it was 1v1, when the bulls were on the offensive |
A40:But teams also signed the same contract. Blake was trade 1 month after the Clippers convinced him to stay in FA, he had other suitors from competitive teams then, but the Clippers wooed him and they gave him a contract. 1 month later they traded him without so much as a heads-up. If ownership is allowed to do that, then any player has the right to ask for a trade whenever they want. PS: why should sports contract be different from any other contract. Is there a different law for sport stars, that I don't know about. It is a profession like any other, people don't curse actors when they force the creators of a show to kill a popular character, because the actor want to pursue other projects, while under contract. Actors are well compensated, why is there no such outcry? |
A40:Gary only guarded him after game 3, so out of the 3 games they went 1v1, he got the better of MJ from a defensive standpoint 2x. PS: I am just using this as an example to those who always talk as if the OGs dominated every game, steph and a lot of the current stars have just one or two okay games in a series and people get on their case as if they are supposed to score 40 every single night. |
Westbrook and his agent parting ways. If the rumor of what caused the rift is true then the dude needs to do some deep soul searching. |
In the three NBA Finals games in which Payton drew the primary Jordan assignment, His Airness averaged only 23.7 points per game on 36.7 percent shooting from the field. In Chicago's first 15 playoff games, Jordan averaged 32.1 points on 47.6 percent shooting. PS: Just putting it out there because we have a lot of revisionist history majors. |
Georgia football coach just signed a 10yr $112mil contract, but it is players making money that will kill the sport . A coach is the highest paid government employee in a state ![]() |
A40:Thank God you used the word staff, do you know what every other staff in every other industry can do whenever they want as long as they give notice, they can move to other companies. Freedom of movement in pursuit of professional fulfillment is a right of every human employee has, except it seems for sports stars. as long as a team can trade away a player under contract anytime they want, then players should also have the same right to demand a trade whenever they want. In every other industry, we see it all the time, top guys moving from one company to another while earning millions, but a sports stars tries it and it is derided as if the end of the world is nigh. PS: when did sports become the only exception to capitalist principles? |
donlittle25:The nfl is not a players league, the nba is |
birdman:Nobody says they will take all, but they can definitely sustain taking the very best. Also, a $150bil investment with a a yearly return of like 5% for say the 1st 3-5yrs and rising to say 10% after that is something that the nba players as a product can generate if they start their own league, and that is easily sellable in today's financial market. Any fund manager worth their name will scramble to get some of that action. PS: The next NBA CBA discussion will be starting by latest next year, we will all see that the players will not lose any ground when it's all said and done, because they have a very strong hand and they know how to play it. |
A40:What is the nba without it top 10 players. Are you going to be watching a finals where Middleton is the best player on the court? It was Stern that made the nba about the players, before him it was Lakers vs Celtics, he came in and changed it to Magic vs Bird. Furthermore employee and employer dynamic is based on what the employee does for the team, most CEOs and MDs are employees, but they still get ownership stakes as part of the payments. GSW was a nobody before Steph, whatever valuation GSW is worth today, at the very least 20% is due to what Steph did on the court. PS: Why does all this stuff not happen in European football, cr7 wanted to leave Madrid while under contract and Madrid reduced his buyout clause and helped facilitate the move, same thing when he wanted to leave Juve, they let him go on a free. But a nba player who can be traded whenever ownership wants, decides he wants a trade then all of a sudden he has committed treason. Maybe we should be asking why they expect some rights for themselves but not the same for players. |
One of the easiest ways to make sure players don't move and I don't understand why it is not allowed is to give max/supermax players the option of taking an ownership stake instead of cash wages. The new Wolves GM who has done nothing for the franchise got ownership stake as part of his package, if that same option is given to players you will see them remaining long term, because their leaving will affect their pocket. This idea is not novel in business, because it is done in about every industry in the USA except for sports. |
A40:In the year of the lockout. Dirk was under contract for 4yr/80mil. The Chinese league offered him 1.5mil per month, with the knowledge that he would leave whenever the lockout ended. With the fact that basketball players from the states don't pay taxes in China, I say that is pretty equivalent, we've not even started to talk about the endorsement opportunities and how brands like Nike, Adidas pand puma would love it for the big name guys to play there even if it is for just a season. PS: you say the owners don't need the money. I say all the players association needs to do is go to either Blackrock or one of the emirates fund and guarantee that if they get the funding for a league, every single player in the nba retires from the nba and joins said new league, if they guarantee coaches a union, coaches will absolutely follow them. In case you think it is far fetched, the PGA just saw how easy it is for players to get funding for a competing tour. Aston Martin one of the worst teams in f1, just secured over $600mil in funding for a paltry 17% stake from the same people. So please keep telling yourself the players don't have an option, if they decide to go nuclear the owners will lose, because their investment will become worthless. That is why it is in everybody's interest to work together and fix the issues that exists without one group acting as if it's an aristocracy. |
A40:When the skillset you have makes you 1 of 5 or so in the whole world, then you have as much leverage as you are willing to push for and that is a fact. The scarcer the skillset the more power the owner of said skillset becomes. PS: As for the owners shutting the league down, ask them what happened the last time they tried it, during the last, lock out. In case you didn’t follow the situation, most of the big Euroleague and Chinese teams offered the big name players very good contracts to come over and play for them. that situation in essence was the beginning of the power shift in the NBA, because the big named players who drive the ratings realized that money wise they could get comparable earnings at least for a few months in Europe. |
greypencils:JT got voted for 1st team all-nba because Embiid is a center. As long as the voting uses positions, then there had to be just 1 center to preserve tradition |
A40:Baba there is no gall involved. The Raptors swore to high heaven's that they would not trade DeRozan to his face. When they did, they did not even give him the courtesy of a heads-up when they found out about the opportunity to make a deal with the Spurs, Masai only called him after the trade was done. So if the teams can trade away a player with 2-3 years left on their contract, a player should also have the same right. Basketball at this level is a profession like any other. D Same thing happened with Blake 1 month after the Clippers convinced him to sign long term they turned around and traded him with no warning. If teams wants to include a provision in the next CBA that no player can be traded until after a certain duration of his contract has been played out, then it must be a 2 way thing. |
birdman:I saw him with the shoulder sling, so it might actually be real. ![]() |
birdman:MJ, Duncan, Hakeem are also examples of players who either demanded trades or were leaving via FAs before they changed their decisions. Social media making news more accessible has just amplified these things to make it look like it's a new thing |
Just saw a trade idea for the Cavs, Sexton, Levert and one 1st round pick for Donovan Mitchell. Thoughts? Personally I like it for the Cavs, Mitchell can focus more on just scoring improving their firepower, Garland will help remove the playmaking load from him. Also, even if he is just becomes a neutral defender, the twin towers of Allen and Mobley will neutralize any shortfall. |
