The Civil War wasn't even about slavery it was fought to prevent the South from leaving the Union to form it's own country, much like some Nigerians want there to be two Nigerias.

Black men fought in the Civil War because the South out numbered the North so they were promised their freedom if they fought for the Northern States (Yankees) against the Southern States(Confederates). Freedom was a by product of the Civil War.
