The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Nigeria will begin enforcing the mandatory nationwide registration of Point of Sale (PoS) operators starting January 1, 2026. This follows multiple previous warnings and missed deadlines. Key details of the enforcement: Deadline: The enforcement date is set for January 1, 2026. Enforcement actions: Unregistered PoS terminals will be seized or shut down by security officials. Fintech companies: Fintech companies that enable unregistered PoS operators will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Legal basis: The registration requirement is based on Section 863(1) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and the CBN's agent banking regulations. Rationale: The move is intended to curb fraud, which was frequently associated with PoS terminals, and improve the integrity of the financial system. It also aims to assist security agencies in monitoring financial transactions and combating issues like kidnapping for ransom. Controversy: The Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN) has argued that the CAC does not have jurisdiction over individuals operating as sub-agents, and the matter is currently in court.
