Popular Nigerian activist and author, Reno Omokri in a recent statement, has revealed why the Nigerian Naira is constantly crashing against the US Dollar.

The 47 years old lawyer in his statement, claimed that Naira is constantly crashing against the Dollar due to the huge external debt the country is owing.

He added that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s led administration was deliberately enslaving the country by borrowing.

Reno Omokri made this known through a recent post on his Facebook page as he claimed that Naira is now worth less than the Zimbabwean dollar.

He wrote;

“In case you don’t know why the Naira is ₦575 to $1, and may soon become ₦1000 to $1, it is because Buhari has increased our total national debt from ₦12 trillion in 2015, to ₦35 trillion today. Things are so bad that even Pastor Adeboye complained about our debt position.

The scientists have set their initial sights on creating an elephant-mammoth hybrid by making embryos in the laboratory that carry mammoth DNA. The starting point for the project involves taking skin cells from Asian elephants, which are threatened with extinction, and reprogramming them into more versatile stem cells that carry mammoth DNA. The particular genes that are responsible for mammoth hair, insulating fat layers and other cold climate adaptions are identified by comparing mammoth genomes extracted from animals recovered from the permafrost with those from the related Asian elephants.

These embryos would then be carried to term in a surrogate mother or potentially in an artificial womb. If all goes to plan – and the hurdles are far from trivial – the researchers hope to have their first set of calves in six years.

“Our goal is to make a cold-resistant elephant, but it is going to look and behave like a mammoth. Not because we are trying to trick anybody, but because we want something that is functionally equivalent to the mammoth, that will enjoy its time at -40C, and do all the things that elephants and mammoths do, in particular knocking down trees,” Church told the Guardian.

The project is framed as an effort to help conserve Asian elephants by equipping them with traits that allow them to thrive in vast stretches of the Arctic known as the mammoth steppe. But the scientists also believe introducing herds of elephant-mammoth hybrids to the Arctic tundra may help restore the degraded habitat and combat some of the impacts of the climate crisis. For example, by knocking down trees, the beasts might help to restore the former Arctic grasslands.

Not all scientists suspect that creating mammoth-like animals in the lab is the most effective way to restore the tundra. “My personal thinking is that the justifications given – the idea that you could geoengineer the Arctic environment using a herd of mammoths – isn’t plausible,” said Dr Victoria Herridge, an evolutionary biologist at the Natural History Museum.

“The scale at which you’d have to do this experiment is enormous. You are talking about hundreds of thousands of mammoths which each take 22 months to gestate and 30 years to grow to maturity.”

Lamm said: “Our goal isn’t just to bring back the mammoth, but to bring back interbreedable herds that are successfully rewilded back into the Arctic region.”

Whether Asian elephants would want to breed with the hybrids is, for now, unknown. “We might have to give them a little shave,” said Church.

Gareth Phoenix, a professor of plant and global change ecology at the University of Sheffield, said: “While we do need a multitude of different approaches to stop climate change, we also need to initiate solutions responsibly to avoid unintended damaging consequences. That’s a huge challenge in the vast Arctic where you have different ecosystems existing under different environmental conditions.

“For instance, mammoths are proposed as a solution to help stop permafrost thaw because they will remove trees, trample and compact the ground and convert landscapes to grassland, which can help keep the ground cool. However, we know in the forested Arctic regions that trees and moss cover can be critical in protecting permafrost, so removing the trees and trampling the moss would be the last thing you’d want to do.”

Goal confirmed on Thursday that City held some talks over the possibility of a deal but there was no agreement over terms with the player or club.

The former United player was believed to be open to a move to Etihad Stadium despite saying in the past that he would never line up for one of the Red Devils' main rivals.

Juventus accepted around €29 million (£24m/$34m) from Manchester united for this deal, otherwise they would suffer a capital loss.

Leicester City will face Napoli in this season’s Europa, while Celtic found themselves in a tough section alongside Bayer Leverkusen and Real Betis in Friday’s draw for the group stage.

As well as Napoli, Leicester will play Spartak Moscow and Legia Warsaw in Group C as they look to do better than their run to the last 32 of last season’s competition.

Despite the continuing devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Real Madrid has still been able to make a 160 million-euro ($188m) bid for Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe and are in a “win-win” position.

The offer was rejected with PSG’s sporting director Leonardo saying on Wednesday it was “not enough” for the 22-year-old who arrived from Monaco four years ago in a 180 million-euro deal.

A dramatically increased proposal from the record 13-time European champions could possibly even see Mbappe replace Parisian team-mate Neymar, who moved to the French capital from Barcelona for 222 million euros in 2017, as the world’s most expensive player.

According to Real’s latest accounts, published in July, they boast net assets of 534 million euros and had 122 million euros cash in the bank.

Their total wage bill for last season was 448 million euros, slightly below the limit of 473.3 million euros set by La Liga.

Since then they have got captain Sergio Ramos’s enormous salary off the wage bill and sold Mbappe’s international team-mate Raphael Varane, another high earner, to Manchester United for a reported 40 million euros.

They also raised a similar amount from the sale of Martin Odegaard to Arsenal.

Deadline day looming
A leader in the field of football finances believes Los Blancos can afford Mbappe.

“Real Madrid have around 290 million euros for recruitment,” Placido Rodriguez Guerrero, professor at Oviedo University and president of the Sports Economics Observatory in Spain, told AFP this week.

“Mbappe’s annual salary at Real Madrid would be about 35 million euros a year net, (70 million euros gross).

“To cushion the investment, in my opinion, Real will offer a contract of at least six seasons. With the transfer fee, we’re looking at an investment of 620 million euros from Real,” he added.

Mbappe has a year to run of his contract at the Parc de Princes, which the club are pushing him to renew, following in the footsteps of Neymar and securing an enticing attacking trio alongside new arrival Lionel Messi.

The France World Cup winner has never hidden his desire to try pastures new.

In May 2019 he opened the door to leaving PSG as he felt he needed “more responsibilities.”

Guerrero believes Real are keen for a move ahead of the end of the transfer window, on August 31.

The Automated Teller Machine at the motor park in Rivers State University, Port Harcourt has been robbed by gunmen dressed in Nigerian Police uniform.

The incident happened at about 3am this morning and reports have it that the gunmen carried out the operation successfully without any resistance from the security operatives stationed at the school’s Main Gate.

According to eyewitness reports, the gunmen dressed in Nigerian Police uniform ordered the School security personnel on duty to open the gate. From there, the armed men went straight to the Polaris Bank, tied up the shuttle drivers who slept at the park as well as the security personnel guarding the ATM.

The management of Polaris Bank is yet to disclose the amount of money that was lost

The gunmen also went away with the a shuttle belonging to one of the drivers who slept at the park.

What's going on?

Members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) Chapter, on Wednesday declared an indefinite strike over non-payment of promotion and skipping allowances.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this is the second time in less than two months that JOHESU members of the UITH chapter will be embarking on a strike action to press home same demands.

Mr Olutunde Oluwawumi, the Chairman of the JOHESU-UITH chapter, who declared the industrial action during an emergency congress of the union in Ilorin, noted that their requests border on workers series of arrears.

He alleged maladministration, poor National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for the union members and what they called out-of-stock syndrome, adding that these issues have not been addressed.

According to him, the demands of members have not been met till now, which had led to hardship on the path of the workers and patients.

Oluwawumi maintained that his members can no longer endure the hardship, hence the need for this indefinite strike.

Reacting to the development, Mrs Olabisi Ajiboye, the Head, Corporate Affairs Unit of the UITH Ilorin, said the strike was a local action and that the management would soon address the requests of the workers.

She noted that the bone of contention has to do with nonpayment of promotion arrears.

According to her, the management is not unaware of the issues on ground and will hold meeting with necessary stakeholders on addressing the issues.

“Management is not relenting on its efforts to address issues raised by JOHESU. Management ensures workers welfare is important,” he said.

Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, has urged banks in the country to investigate potential customers’ sources of income before opening an account for them.

Bawa gave the advice on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja by the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria (ACAEBIN), led by its Chairman, Yinka Tiamiyu.

The EFCC implored the bank auditors to take issues of transparency in banking operations seriously, adding that starting from September 1, 2021 it will no longer be business as usual as the commission will hold banks liable where there are established cases of institutional complicity in fraud in the sector.

He however, affirmed the commission’s willingness to partner with the association in tackling financial crimes and related challenges in the banking sector.

“I will like to urge you to know your customers, know the kind of businesses they do before opening an account for them because some customers will open an account within a space of two months a huge sum of money is found in the account, So there is need for you to try and query these information including their linked accounts,” Bawa said.

Tiamiyu in his remarks, said they were in the Commission to seek improved partnership between banks and the EFCC in tacking economic and financial crimes.

He reiterated the commitment of banks as lead actors in the nation’s financial system to sanitising the system, noting that it was not in the interest of the organizations to incubate or suppress financial malfeasance.

Amplifying this point, Uduak Udoh, Vice Chairman of the Association said, “Some customers are conniving with bank staff to loot funds. We want you to look into that area, not only the banks as we are ready to give you all the cooperation you need; we want you to trust bank auditors with information sharing because we cannot support fraudulent staff as they are a threat to the organization.”

They used the opportunity of the visit to highlight issues of concern to them and their organizations, including fast-tracking the consideration of petitions from banks by the EFCC.
