The Senate erupted into a raucous session on Monday as a senator moved to suspend the ministerial screening of Festus Keyamo, former minister of state for labour.

Darlington Nwokocha, a Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, moved a resolution to suspend Keyamo, a Delta State cabinet nominee. Enyinnaya Abaribe, a senator representing Abia-South Senatorial District, seconded Nwokocha’s proposal.

Following that, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the proposal to a voice vote, but the lawmakers were divided on the issue.

Following the looming threat of war between the Niger military coup leaders and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, hundreds of European nationals are being evacuated from the West African nation that has now been plunged into a political crisis and rattled the region.

At least 262 people, including 12 infants, have already left the country on board one Airbus A330 plane, French foreign minister Catherine Colonna said.

You will recall that supporters of the coup leaders had gathered outside the French Embassy in Niamey in a demonstration against France's alleged post-colonial influence.

Several other European countries are also working to evacuate their citizens or collaborate in the French effort. Germany and Spain are both working to remove citizens from the country, and the United Kingdom has said that it is in contact with the few British nationals registered in Niger and is collaborating with France.

Italy, meanwhile, has organized a separate flight to evacuate its citizens – fewer than 90 civilians across the country and just over 300 military personnel, according to a spokesperson from the Italian foreign ministry.

The United States, on the other hand, is keeping its embassy operating on a normal schedule, with State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller saying Tuesday that there were no current indications “of threats to US citizens or facilities.”

However, the US troops in Niger have been restricted to the American military base in Agadez, Niger, as President Biden's administration works to restore the democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum to power.

Following the refusal of the Niger military coup leaders' refusal to hand over power back to ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate seeking its support for military intervention against the military junta in the neighbouring country.

You will recall that last week Sunday, Tinubu, the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, after meeting with some fellow ECOWAS leaders to discuss appropriate ways to restore democracy in Niger had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta to hand over power or face military intervention.


The President’s letter read, “Political situation in Niger. Following the unfortunate political situation in Niger Republic culminating in the overthrow of its President, ECOWAS under my leadership condemned the coup in its entirety and resolved to seek the return of the democratically elected govt in a bid to restore peace, ECOWAS convened a meeting and came out with a communique.”

President Tinubu also sought support for, “Military buildup and deployment of personnel for military intervention to enforce compliance of the military junta in Niger should they remain recalcitrant.

“Closure and monitoring of all land borders with the Niger Republic and reactivating of the border drilling exercise.
“Cutting off Electricity supply to the Niger Republic, mobilising international support for the implementation of the provisions of the ECOWAS communique.”
“Preventing the operation of commercial and special flights into and from Niger Republic; Blockade of goods in transit to Niger especially from Lagos and eastern seaports,” he added.

President Tinubu also told the Senate that the country was embarking on sensitisation of Nigerians and Nigeriens on the imperative of these actions, particularly via social media.


Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, was toppled by his presidential guards, and he has since remained in their custody.

Following the failure of the West African diplomatic delegation to Niger to seek the release and reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, the Niger coup leaders have ended all connections including military agreements with France, its former colonial ruler, as international pressure mounts on them to restore democratic order in the country.

You will recall that Tinubu as the Chairman of the ECOWAS' Authority of Heads of State and Government sent a delegation led by former military Head of State, Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar to Niger yesterday.

The delegation left without spending the night, even as ECOWAS' deadline to the junta for restoring Bazoum to power and the country’s constitution by Sunday draws closer.

The coup leaders also called back home Niger's ambassadors and warned citizens to be wary of foreign armies and spies. This was disclosed on the country’s television as the delegation dispatched by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu met the coup leader, Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani on Thursday.

The coup leaders also cut ties with the United States and Nigeria, as the deadline given by the West African regional bloc will expire in two days. The international community is asking the Tchiani-led military to release and reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

The ousted president in a plea published in a Washington Post opinion piece said, “I write this as a hostage and urged the U.S. and partners to help.”

However, the Niger coup leaders made an announcement terminating the military agreements and protocols signed with France and announced the end of functions for Niger’s ambassadors to France, the United States, Togo and neighbouring Nigeria, which is leading ECOWAS efforts on dialogue.

“All aggression or attempt at aggression against the state of Niger will see an immediate response and without warning,” said a spokesman for the coup leaders, Col. Maj. Amadou Abdramane.

Mali and Burkina Faso have jointly pledged their support for Niger' s military government and issued a warning to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against any potential invasion of Niger. In a joint statement on Monday, the two countries, both of which recently witnessed military takeovers, expressed solidarity with Niger' s military leadership and vowed to assist the people of Niger in defending against any invaders.

The statement from Mali and Burkina Faso underscored their determination, stating that any military intervention targeting Niger would be considered an act of war against both Mali and Burkina Faso. They further threatened to withdraw their ECOWAS membership immediately if such an invasion were to occur. Additionally, they asserted their commitment to supporting Niger' s armed forces and its people by adopting self- defense measures.

In their statement, Mali and Burkina Faso criticized ECOWAS and its leaders, accusing them of hypocrisy. The transitional governments of both countries expressed deep indignation and surprise at the perceived imbalance between the swift calls for military intervention to restore constitutional order in Niger and the lack of action, indifference, and passive complicity in helping other West African states and peoples that have been victims of terrorism for a decade.

This development comes in response to ECOWAS' s decision over the weekend to leave military options on the table for Niger if the coup plotters refuse to relinquish power to democratically- elected President Mohamed Bazoum and return to their barracks. ECOWAS also threatened to impose sanctions, including trade and airspace blockades, on Niger.

" President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted from office on July 27 when soldiers declared an indefinite curfew and closed all borders in the country. Colonel Amadou Abdramane, who appeared to be among the coup leaders, directly addressed President Bazoum, citing the deteriorating security situation and governance issues as reasons for seizing power. "

The military takeover in Niger has drawn condemnation from the international community, including the United States of America and the United Nations. ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, has also voiced its disapproval of the coup.
