There Is No Merger With Other Political Parties – Labour Party Assures Nigerians

The Labour Party, LP, has refuted speculated claims that the opposition party is in merger talks with other opposition parties, following the outcome of the 2023 general elections.

However, the Spokesperson of the LP presidential campaign council, Yunusa Tanko, who denied the merger during an interview with Channels Television, said that the party is not ruling out a “working alliance” with other political parties. Tanko said the LP is speaking with other political parties of like minds, adding that “a merger is out of the question.”

He said, “When you talk about merger, it means that political parties from different parts of the country come together, submit their documents to INEC and then they will be pronounced as a new political party and that isn’t obtainable at the moment.”

NIGER COUP: Thousands Of Youths Answer Call For Volunteers

On Saturday, supporters of the Niger coup leaders had to halt a census of citizens willing to volunteer for non-military roles in defence against a possible military intervention by ECOWAS, saying they had been overwhelmed by the numbers who turned up.

Thousands of mostly young men had queued up outside a stadium in Niamey hours before the scheduled start time – a sign of the strong support in some quarters for the coup leaders, who have constantly defied international pressure to stand down after the July 26 coup.

“In all our calculations and our understandings, we never thought we could mobilise (this number of people). So it is really difficult for us today to do this work. That is what made us halt this census” said Younoussa Hima, co-organiser of the initiative dubbed The Mobilisation of Young People for the Fatherland.

Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the Niger military junta, has said that his country does not want war but will be ready to defend itself if necessary. “Neither the army nor the people of Niger want war, but we will resist any manifestation of it,” Tchiani said.

Court Strikes Out Illegal Arms Charges Against Emefiele As FG Arraigns Him For Alleged N6.9bn Fraud

A Federal High Court in Lagos has struck charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition filed against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

El-Rufai Should Have Been Confirmed As Minister - Fmr APC National Vice Chairman

The former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Salihu Lukman, has said there is no reason why the immediate former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, should not have been cleared to be a Minister in President Bola Tinubu's cabinet.

He stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday while describing El-Rufai’s non-confirmation as a minister as overplayed politics.

He said, “My personal opinion is that, again, politics is being overplayed. If other nominees are cleared, I don’t see any reason why Mallam Nasir will not be cleared.
“Sincerely speaking, the earlier we reduce political considerations in terms of the determination of decisions concerning appointments, the better for the country,” he added.
