Politics / Voting Apathy Hits Imo LGA Election by kingpado(m): 4:10pm On Aug 25, 2018
By Chinonso Alozie, Owerri

The local government election in Imo state, Saturday, recorded a low turn out, just as some political leaders suspected to be members of the All Progressives Congess, APC, were said to be begging people to go and vote.

This is as the Imo state Chairman of the All Grand Alliance Party, AGAP, Celestine Ugo, said his party was not part of the said local government election.

Recall that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, had said they would not take part in the local government election.

At the time, Vanguard went to some voting centers in the state capital and observed that they were scanty.

Traders, motorists went on to do their normal businesses. Douglas road at about 7am, was filled to brim with traders for the day’s business.

Some claimed that since PDP and APGA, were not participating in the said election, it means that there was no contest.

Others believed that it would be preferable they do their various businesses to get money to feed their families.

At the time of filling this report, Vanguard was told as at 12pm, there was no ISIEC officials at Emedike/Chokoneze, boot 23 Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA.

The same situation was witnessed in Area L world bank primary school, Owerri west LGA at about 12:15pm.

It was not different in Ihiagwa community at about 11:12 am, there was no sign there would be an election in Ihiagwa community, Owerri west LGA.

Also, at about 1:13pm In Orogwe primary school, in Owerri west local government, few electorate were seen but no security, no ISIEC officials.

While at about 1:15pm in Owerri city school, along Wethedral road, Owerri municipal, ISIEC officials were seen with sensitive materials but were waiting for electorate. security agents were present.

Politics / Free Education: Crisis Brews In IMSU As Students Are Barred From Writing Exams by kingpado(m): 11:06pm On Jul 18, 2018
Fresh crisis may be brewing at the Imo State University Owerri (IMSU) as students were barred by the school authorities from writing their examinations for failure to pay school fees.
This is coming on the heels of the offer of total free education claims of the state Government for every Imo person in any of the state-owned schools.
At the commencement of examination at the Imo State University on Monday, undergraduates of Imo origin were dragged out of examination halls for failure to present receipts of payment.
One of the affected students, Kingsley Chukwu said security men were stationed at every examination hall, and demanded evidence of payment before admittance into the hall.
According to him, except for students who smartly dodged or collected from others and presented to the security men, were allowed in while others were barred.
The tearful Chukwu who lamented that the development may mean an extra year in school, said “there was no notice, or warning of any sort. We just came and discovered this operation show your school fees receipt before you enter the hall. This is very surprising because we all believed that as Imo indigenes, we are enjoying free education,” he said.
Others who protested the development said the timing was wrong and a deception. A female student, Amaka said “please tell us, how do we tell our parents to give us money for school fees when the State Government is all over the media telling everyone that education is totally free in Imo State,” she queried.
Another student who pleaded anonymity said the development was ill timed because it is second semester examination, when every serious minded student is studying hard to avoid an extra year in school.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Obi Njoku confirmed the exercise but said it was for ancillary fees and not school fees as alleged by the students.
Njoku said, “It is the non-indigenes that were prevented from sitting for their exams over non-payment of school fees. The indigenes of the state were only barred from entering the examination halls over non-payment of ancillary fees and not school fees”.
According to him, ancillary fees deals with sport fees; law dinner; medical fees; adding that it is not the school management that supervises such.
Njoku said many students outrightly refused to pay even after collecting it from their parents and guardians.
He maintained that the free education policy of the state government is still in effect and not stopped as alleged by the students.
Meanwhile, students were seen appealing to the institution’s security men to allow them entry into the examination halls, in other to avoid an extra year.

Politics / Yahaya Bello: We'll Tame Fayose On Saturday, Doesn't Have Monopoly Of Stupidity by kingpado(m): 8:22am On Jul 11, 2018
The Executive Governor of Kogi state, Mr. Yahaya Bello has apparently challenged the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose to a “Stupidity” contest.

He made this challenge at the All Progressives Congress (APC) mega rally in Ekiti State while campaigning on behalf of the party candidate, Kayode Fayemi.

While addressing the crowd, he regretted not being around when it was reported that the Governor of Ekiti state had allegedly disrupted a peace parley organised by INEC in the state earlier in the week.

He assured the crowd that they will not be intimidated by Ayodele Fayose because “Nobody has a monopoly of stupidity, we shall tame him” which could literally be interpreted as having a substantial share of stupidity.

“I want to talk, I want to yarn. There are two categories of people I want to address here today. First, the Nigerian youth, secondly, the Kogi citizens that are living in Ekiti state. Yesterday, we entered into a covenant with Nigerian youth in Ekiti state. When we were coming yesterday from Kogi state, we decided to come by road to address my people.

He continued his address further by tracing kogi ancestry and how they had settled in Ekiti state a long time ago which confirms that they are also stakeholders in the state and he was there on a legitimate mission.

“Our grandfather, great grandfathers, fathers and mothers for over 100 years lived in Ekiti state. And as such, more than 75% of the farm centres are occupied by the people of Kogi state. In fact, it means, wherever we voted, it is surely victory. Exactly the way we did it in Ondo state, we are going to repeat it here in Ekiti state”

On the issue of the disrupted stakeholders meeting, the kogi state governor said referring explicitly to the Ekiti State Governor,

“We heard that there was stakeholders meeting and there is someone called Fayose, and he disrupted it. Wallahi, he is lucky that I was not there. Anyway, that one is by-gone. Saturday, we will send him packing from governance. I will be here with you. Nobody will intimidate you.

He continued further addressing the APC governorship candidate, Kayode Fayemi,

“Your Excellency, I have already entered into covenant with them and they have promised me that they will not be intimidated, that somebody does not have monopoly of stupidity. We shall tame him on Saturday.”

The Ekiti State gubernatorial election is scheduled for July 14

Politics / Kwankwaso, R-APC Speak On Reconciliation With APC by kingpado(m): 7:11am On Jul 07, 2018
Former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has dismissed any form of reconciliation with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said the party which failed in its campaign promises, including assurance that petrol will sell at N45 per litre, would not fulfil any fresh promise arising from negotiations.

“It’s bit late. The party has had its so called-convention, it has deviated from the original intentions why it was brought to being. So, there is nothing that remains with the mainstream APC”, Kwankwaso’s spokesman, Hajia Binta Spikin told Vanguard.

“I don’t know about the promises Comrade Oshiomhole keep making. He keeps promising he will do this, he would do that, but it’s just promises like the promises the APC gave in the run-up to the 2015 general election.

“Remember APC promised that petrol would be sold at N45 per litre; it has not fulfilled those promises, so what makes this promise different from all the other promises,” he said.

Similarly, National Publicity Secretary of the R-APC, Prince Kassim Afegbua, restated the determination of the group to carry on.

He also insisted that the national convention of the APC was constitutionally flawed.
“That convention has a constitutional flaw, so they are the ones that should be coming to us for peace,” he said.

Politics / Okorocha Reacts After Court Nullifies Imo APC Congresses by kingpado(m): 6:15pm On Jul 05, 2018
The Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, has hailed the Federal High Court judgement which nullified the All Progressives Congress (APC) congress in the state.

A Federal High Court sitting in Owerri, presided over by Justice Lewis Allagoa, on Thursday ordered fresh Ward Congresses in the state.

Okorocha, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said that, “The judgement of the Court on the issue of APC congresses in Imo has only authenticated his sustained claim and that of patriotic leaders of APC in Imo that the congresses did not hold in the state with a lot of proofs to that effect.

“The judiciary has remained not only the last hope of the common man, but also the last hope of institutions and processes especially as they concern our democracy.

“Imo is the only APC state in the South-East and should have been encouraged to have successful congresses, to show good example to other states in the geo-political zone but regretted that those who had the task of conducting free and fair congresses decided to submerge the whole venture for their selfish agenda.

The Governor also commended members of APC in the state for “remaining calm and steadfast for all the time the controversies over the congresses were on and noted that the court has restored the desire of party members to elect officers of their choice at all levels in the state”.

Okorocha vowed that APC in Imo, will not tolerate those undue manipulations of electoral processes, adding that, “Anybody determined to play his or her politics in APC must do so in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution and also in line with approved democratic culture and practices.”

Politics / God, 24 Lgas In Imo Support My Son-in-law’s Gov Ambition – Okorocha by kingpado(m): 6:02pm On Mar 04, 2018
The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, on Sunday said God and 24 out of the 27 local government areas in the state have ratified the ambition of his son-in-law to succeed him in office.

Okorocha made this observation when he debunked the allegation that his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, who also doubles as his Chief of Staff, supervised or ordered an assault on Owerri Catholic Archbishop, AJV Obinna.

The incident allegedly happened during a burial service on Saturday in Owerri North Local Government Area of the state.

Okorocha, who spoke in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo in Owerri, said the news that his son-in-law supervised the assault on the archbishop by members of All Progressives Congress was a “blackmail being orchestrated by the opposition.”

Okorocha said the opposition had seen his son-in-law as the aspirant to beat in the race to the State House, and now uses the church against the “project.”

He boasted that his son-in-law’s governorship aspiration has been endorsed by God and 24 out of the 27 LGAs in the state.

Okorocha said, “We say this for posterity sake. Imo people, including youths, students, men and women have “thrown their unalloyed support behind” the youthful Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu, for the 2019 governorship in the state.

“He has become the subject matter as long as that issue is concerned, with APC officials and leaders from 24 out of the 27 local governments in the state having already endorsed him for the 2019 Imo guber.

“Now, seeing Uche Nwosu as the guy to beat in the 2019 election, they now think that there is no other way to stop him than through unwarranted blackmail.

“That is the reason such a quintessential gentleman and an embodiment of decency should be associated with whatever that transpired at the event in question.”

Politics / Fashola Exposes Buhari, Lai Mohammed – Reno Omokri by kingpado(m): 1:24pm On Feb 03, 2018
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri says Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fahola on Thursday “exposed” President Buhari and Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed as liars.

He said Fashola, while trying to defend himself from allegations of ineptitude as regards the epileptic power supply in the country, ended up vindicating both Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP, albeit unintentionally.

Reno noted that at various occasions since coming to power on May 29, 2015, both Buhari “and his lying parrot, Lai Mohammed, have attempted to sell the false narrative that the Jonathan administration and the Peoples Democratic Party, destroyed Nigeria’s economy and handed over a collapsed polity”.

He recalled that on the 14th of August, 2017, Buhari through his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said: “With due respects to the former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, these are the facts about the economy you left behind, in case you have forgotten. I hope this will help to erase the wrong statement credited to you at your party, the PDP Convention at the Eagle Square last weekend that you handed to President Buhari a robustly healthy economy.”

According to Reno, Lai on 26th of January 2018, in an interview with the Sun Newspaper, said as follows: “I think it will be tragedy for this country for PDP to come back because they have not even apologised to the nation for how they had destroyed our economy, destroyed our infrastructure, destroyed our quality, and so far from their campaign, ask them how they will do it better when they get there.”

Continuing, the author pointed out that speaking on February 1, 2018 at a civil society engagement workshop on the Power Sector Recovery Programme in Abuja, Fashola stated as follows: “We hear all our so-called experts who say (non-availability of) power is why the economy of Nigeria is not growing.”

“That is not factual and it is not correct. At the time when we had less power in 2013 and 2014, the economy of this country was growing at seven per cent per annum. We had less power then than we have now, but the economy was growing.”

Reno insisted that the Buhari government cannot suppress “the fact that former President Jonathan developed and grew Nigeria’s economy at an unprecedented and consistent growth rate of over 6% per annum and handed over a thriving economy that was projected by CNNMoney to be the third fastest growing economy in the world when Dr. Jonathan handed over power to President Buhari.”

“Unfortunately, due to the ineptitude of the Buhari administration, a booming economy became an economy in recession in just one year under the All Progressive Congress.

“And this is not the only recent example of the vindication of former President Jonathan by the Buhari administration.

“Only recently, lying Lai Mohammed responded to the letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo by claiming that the Buhari administration had increased the nation’s foreign reserve from the $24 billion it met it to $40 billion.

“The question for Lai Mohammed is this: From who did Buhari inherit the $24 billion? From ghosts? From Killer Fulani herdsmen?

“In light of the vindicating statements by Raji Fashola, I hereby call on both President Muhammadu Buhari and lying Lai Mohammed to tender an unreserved apology to former President Jonathan sad the PDP and to henceforth commit to returning Nigeria’s economy at least to the state that they met it when Dr. Jonathan handed over power to them on May 28, 2015.”

Politics / Breaking: Kwakwanso, 10 Kano State Lawmakers Dump APC For PDP by kingpado(m): 9:31pm On Mar 14, 2017
Former Governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has, Tuesday, reportedly defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, party to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
According to reports not yet authenticated, Senator Kwankwaso defected with 10 Kano state lawmakers.
His defection may not be unconnected with his ordeals in the ruling party.
FLASH:
Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso and 10 Kano state lawmakers defect from APC back to PDP today.

Recall that in March last year, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Kano State chapter had initiated moves to suspend him over what it termed anti-party activities.

The then chairman, Kano chapter of the party, Alhaji Haruna Umar Doguwa, had told newsmen in Kano that the senator had, during a visit to the state, allegedly exhibited actions capable of compromising the party’s unity.
According to Doguwa: “The case of party indiscipline by Kwankwaso would be thoroughly investigated and dealt with in accordance with the constitution of our party.”
However, the true reasons why the Senator may have defected to the opposition party is yet to be ascertained.
It would be recalled that sometime in November 2013, 5 governors elected on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC). It was an unprecedented move in Nigeria’s political history and formed the foundation for APC’s victory at the 2015 general elections.
The governors who led their supporters and political structures to APC were Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers).
They were joined by other political heavyweights such as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Senator Bukola Saraki, the then Speaker of the House of Representatives – Aminu Tambuwal, Shaba Lafiagi, Mohammed Ndume, Danjuma Goje, Abdullahi Adam, Bindo Jubrilla and Abdullahi Gobir.
Others include Dr. Samuel Ortom, former Speaker Aminu Bello Masari, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu and Barrister Simon Lalong. In fact, of the 17 state governors elected on the platform of APC in Northern Nigeria only 7 are not ex-PDP members..
