Foreign Affairs / 49 Reported Dead As Powerful Earthquake Rocks Mexico by kingtobi95: 8:22am On Sep 20, 2017
At least 49 people have been reported dead after a powerful, 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico on Tuesday, toppling buildings in the capital and sowing panic on the anniversary of a devastating 1985 temblor.

The preliminary toll from the authorities looked certain to rise, however, as it covered only regions close to Mexico City but not the capital itself, where 20 million people live.

In Mexico City, emergency crews and hundreds of volunteers were digging through the rubble of collapsed buildings looking for survivors and bodies.

Georgina Sanchez, 52, sobbed to AFP in a plaza in the capital;

“I’m so worried. I can’t stop crying. It’s the same nightmare as in 1985,”

Lazaro Frutis, a 45-year-old who escaped an office building before it crumpled to the ground said;

“We ran outside thinking all was going to collapse around us,”

“The worst thing is, we don’t know about our families or anything.”

The quake — which occurred in the early afternoon, hours after city authorities had conducted an earthquake drill — caused most of its damage in the center and south of the sprawling city.

Several buildings were reduced to debris and cars were flattened by falling masonry.

Scenes of chaos permeated the city, with traffic jammed to a standstill and anxious people running between the vehicles, as ambulances tried to make headway, sirens squealing.

Emergency officials warned people in the streets to avoid smoking because of the risk of igniting gas leaking from ruptured pipes.

Celebrities / Iceberg Slim: I Am Not Exploiting Juliet Ibrahim For Fame, She Has The 3 C’s by kingtobi95: 10:30am On Sep 19, 2017
Nigerian rapper, Olusegun Olowokere, popularly known as Iceberg Slim, who has recently taken the Nigerian and Ghanaian social media by storm following the news of him dating Ghanaian actress, Juliet Ibrahim, and flooding our TLs and pages with their loved up photos and ass squeezing..

Though Iceberg hates to talk about his romance with Juliet Ibrahim, the US-born rapper opened up on their romance in a new interview..

What are we expecting from your new song?

On my new song ‘Oluwa’, you should be expecting a side of Iceberg Slim that the world has probably never seen. I’ve decided to showcase my versatility.

Why has it taken this long to drop it?

It took this long because I was going through a lot, mentally and emotionally. I took time off, to be with my family and loved ones, during our loss.

In coming back to Nigeria, I needed to make sure that I was in the best state of mind, to release new music.

Is there going be something for your new love, Juliet Ibrahim, in the song?

The song is about me, speaking to God (Oluwa), pleading for his blessings and grace over myself and the people around me.

The genre of music you were exposed to at a tender age is totally different from what you do at the moment: Why is that?

I was exposed to a lot of Sunny Ade, Fela, Obesere and the likes, but growing up in New York City, I couldn’t speak Yoruba. I appreciated the instrumentation and melodies simply for what it was, great music.

I played the drums and the keyboard in church, and it was the things that I learned from those songs that I replicated. I also sang in the choir, and I’d often use the harmonies/melodies that I heard from those artistes.

Why is it that international artistes have a huge influence on most Nigerian artistes than our African legends?

International artists have a huge influence on most Nigerian artists because most yearn to reach those heights, or level of success, so to speak. Many of our artists want to be known and accepted beyond the walls of Africa, which creates this telescopic mindset that

“Whatever they’re doing over there, let me replicate it. Be it the dressing, slang, hair, jewelry etc…” simply put, their eyes are on a bigger market.

How were you able to clinch collaboration with the likes of Ja Rule, 2face, Tiwa Savage, the late Dagrin, Vector, Eldee, Banky W, MI, Ice Prince etc?

I was able to clinch such collaborations simply by the grace of God. I’ve never had to beg or pay for a collaboration, and I believe it’s because everyone that I’ve ever worked with has had this mutual respect for my art and talent.

I’ve been privileged to connect with these people, both personally and musically.

You seem to be well connected internationally, why are you yet to be popular among music lovers in Nigeria?

I think this is because my past, lack of consistency. It’s easy to get people’s attention, but it’s hard to keep it.

Once the spotlight is on me, and people are awaiting what’s next, that’s when I’d usually just disappear. If you don’t hear from or about Iceberg Slim, you’ll forget about him. Perhaps that may be the reason. But this time around, I’m here to stay.

Rumour has it that you are exploiting Juliet Ibrahim’s fame to rise to stardom. How true is this?

Rumour has it? I’ve never heard such, and besides, there will always be rumours when you’re in any form of spotlight. I’d never exploit anyone, for any type of gain.

That would be extremely selfish and immoral. Such behavior goes against my code of ethics.

Critics consider your accusation that Phyno and Peter of P-Square copied the hairstyle you introduced to Nigeria as a publicity stunt. Is this true?

The statement was taken out of context, hence why some would see it as such. I was simply making a reference to the Mohawk hairstyle that became my signature in Nigeria, and then I saw some artists later replicating it.

I wasn’t condemning them, nor was I looking for attention. If they were both unknown artists, my point wouldn’t have been misinterpreted, my words would’ve been understood in the simplest format.

If you weren’t an entertainer, what would you possibly be doing?

If I wasn’t an entertainer, I’d probably be an FBI agent. Growing up, I always took a liking to law enforcement, from solving crimes to bringing people to justice, I admired it all. I went to school to study Criminal Justice.

What was it like when you lost your mom?

Words can’t describe the feeling. It’s like literally losing a part of your body, you can never be the same or whole again. The day that I recorded “Oluwa” was the last day that I had spoken to her, before she passed away.

She had always encouraged me to make songs embracing my faith and background, from the church. When I spoke to her that day, she even assisted with the pronunciation of some of the Yoruba words that I used. I made that song to make her proud. However, God called her home a few days later, and she never got to hear the finished song.

Do you feel comfortable with where you are in the Nigerian music industry?

I’m not comfortable with where I am in the Nigerian music industry, but I am content because I know God has a bigger and better plan. I’m working on God’s time, not man’s.

Why didn’t you practice criminal justice since that was the first thing you studied?
I didn’t practice Criminal Justice because I had a huge battle within myself. The tussle was between Goals vs Dreams…Career vs Passion.

After two years, I left the University where I was studying Criminal Justice, to enroll myself in a music school, to study Audio Engineering and Production. It was definitely a tough decision.

How would you describe yourself: a lover, a romantic, a fighter, or what?

I’d probably say I’m all of the above, because I can romantically fight for love.

What do you look out for in your women?

I’ve found what I’ve been looking for, in the woman that I have. The three C’s…Character, Charm, and Charisma.

Foreign Affairs / World’s Oldest Woman, Violet Brown, Dies At 117 by kingtobi95: 6:46pm On Sep 18, 2017
The world’s oldest woman, Violet Brown, has died in Jamaica.

Violet Brown, who was known as “Aunt V” and died Friday at a local hospital, where she had been treated for heart arrhythmia and dehydration, was 117 years and 189 days old.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed his condolences in a Facebook post, calling her “an inspiring woman.”

With her death, the Gerontology Research Group lists Nabi Tajima of Japan as the oldest surviving person.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1900.

Brown was born Violet Moss — or Mosse: Both spellings were sometimes used — on March 10, 1900, and spent much of her life cutting sugar cane near her home in the Duanvale district in western Jamaica.

A biography posted on the website of a foundation named in her honour said she was baptized at age 13 at the Trittonvale Baptist Church and remained a member throughout her life, long serving as organist. She credited her longevity to hard work and her Christian faith.

Her husband, Augustus Brown, died in 1997 and the eldest of her six children died in April at age 97.

In an interview this year with The Associated Press, Brown said she was surprised but grateful to have lived so long.

“This is what God has given me, so I have to take it,” she said.

Education / Nigerian Student Writes How He Finally Passed NECO After 7 Years by kingtobi95: 6:39pm On Sep 18, 2017
A Nigerian student has taken to Facebook to write about how he finally passed NECO exams after 7 years of being out of school.

Solomon Bartholomew in a lenghty post on facebook, wrote about the hurdles he had to go through in life, including losing his mother.

Despite his mates being graduates and some serving in the NYSC, he says he doen’t feel an inch of underachievement

Anxious to check his result, he finally did and saw he passed with 8 credits and 1 Good.

Read his full write-up below

“…and I checked my NECO result today. After 7 years.

Last week, I wrote an article on personal timing that went viral, where I founded that my classmates have been done with school since two years ago and some serving this year, meanwhile I haven’t even been to the university.

That nobody defines when it’s prestigious to reach a height in life. Whether to get married, or get a job, or get a degree. We could be classmates but not purpose or destiny mates, hence life will happen to us very differently.

I was done with high school in 2010. I went to a science school, and my results were bad.
Life happened, I went to serve as ‘NWABOY’ as ensured by my dad. So schooling was the last thing on my mind, tho I was a voracious reader.

Mom died. Things got bad and all other penury that happened.

Getting my O’ level was the last thing on my mind. No funds, and life wasn’t just favourable.

I remember an uncle of mine telling me to rewrite, that he’d sponsor. When time for registration came, he didn’t pick my calls again ever.

Well, a lot happened and I decided to rewrite NECO this year. I wasn’t loud about it. Just members of my tribe knew.

Do you know what it’s like to go back to write an exam after a whooping 7 years of being out of curriculum?

I read my best. Prayed my best. And took each paper with the best of me. This time around I rewrote for social science, and art, as I am looking at a career in social work or psychology to help boost me as a life coach and prospective psychotherapist. Whenever God wills.

Today when I read in the news that the results were out. I got anxious, but to end the anxiety, I got off to get the scratch card and check my result.

I saw 8 credits. 1 Good.
I screamed. I cried.

Yes, you might feel it’s too small an achievement, but this is personal to me. Very personal. The crucibles of life’s experience that surrounded my life. The uncertainty of many things. The unusual timing.

I decided to share this here, because I do not feel any inch of underachievement ‘cos my mates have bagged their degrees and I just got my SSCE.

A lot of people hardly believe I am not a graduate. It’s understandable.
I have poured a lot of development into myself resulting to how much I have inspired and motivated lives.

That is one reason I am proud of me.
I might not have what my mates have but I have what they admire, what they seek, what they consult and pay me for.

And a woman said to me today:

“Getting a university education for you now is just to add to your accolades. You have been trained in the university of life.”

Life has taught me some lessons in my short span of existence.

That we should never compare ourselves to anyone even if they were our classmates.

God will never give you a thing because he gave it to your mate, he’d give you because it is his purpose for you.
Stop killing yourself by comparison.

There’s no general timing for success.
When your time comes, you’ll have it.
And the very best time is when it comes; God’s time.

Your mates might have gotten their degrees, and gotten married. Working with a good pay.
And if you’re not, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re late. It doesn’t mean they are better..

It means that we all have personal timing ordained by God for our affairs.

In his own time he makes all things beautiful, not in the time of your mates.

Celebrities / Nigerians Should Please Help Me, My Drugs Cost N1.7M’ – Veteran Actor Sadiq Daba by kingtobi95: 10:51am On Sep 15, 2017
Bare a week after veteran Nollywood actor and broadcaster, Sadiq Daba debunked reports of him being down with leukemia, he has finally admitted he is indeed having some health issues and further pleaded with Nigerians to come to his aid.

According to Mr. Sadiq, who revealed that he lives off a drug called Gleevec, used for the treatment of the disease and gets supplies of the drug free-of-charge from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, courtesy of a donor agency based in the United States, it is quite expensive.

Speaking to PUNCH correspondent, the October 1st star said;
“To get the drug at OAU, you have to go through a process of evaluation. Then you are recommended to the foundation that supplies the drug.

But, if you are going to buy it off the counter, a pack of it will cost you about N1.7m. And this will last for three months,”

According to him, the disease caught him unawares towards the end of 2015. At first, he had thought that he was having the first symptoms of a minor ailment.
“I thought I had malaria fever. So I went to a hospital in Abuja for a test. After a series of tests, the doctor was shocked. He told me that what I had was beyond them at the hospital. He advised me to seek help from a tertiary institution. The tertiary institution, in this case, simply refers to a university teaching hospital. That was in 2015.

“Then I went to the Dermatology Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and it was confirmed that I had leukaemia. Fortunately, the disease was not overblown yet. It was still at the early and manageable stage. I was placed on drugs,” he recounted.

But, midway into the treatment of the ailment in 2016, Daba had a relapse and he was hospitalized for about three months.

“I was rushed from my residence to the Lagos State Emergency Unit. Again, I was fortunate to encounter a group of dedicated and courteous medical staff there who took great care of me. I was placed under observation for 48 hours and, thereafter, they wheeled me to the General Hospital where I was admitted,” he said.

He recalled that during his stay at the hospital, which lasted two months, the chief medical director of LASUTH came on a ward visit and recognized him as he lay on his sickbed.

“It was nice that he visited the ward at that point because my bill was almost over N1m. The good doctor went on to slash the entire bill by 50 per cent. I will never forget that,” he said.

After leaving the hospital, Daba started attending a dermatology clinic where he met one Dr. Balogun, a consultant on dermatology, whom he described as a “fantastic person”.

Although the doctor placed him on a regular diet of drugs, it failed to solve his problem.

Eventually, she advised him to go to the “only medical centre in Nigeria where leukaemia patients are treated and the right drugs are available” for the treatment of the ailment. That centre is at the OAU, Ile-Ife.

“She gave me a referral letter. But I was scared because there was a proviso that I might undergo a bone-marrow surgery. For the first two months, I could not go to the university simply because I was trying to avoid the surgery,” he said.
While he struggled to overcome his fright, the broadcaster had another relapse. This time, he was warned that he needed to go for proper medical treatment at OAU.

Somehow, when he got there the doctors had to skip the bone-marrow operation and he was placed on drugs.
Daba was full of praises for the team at the Department of Dermatology, headed by Prof. Mohiz Durosinmi, that handled his case.

“Prof. Durosinmi’s team was absolutely fantastic. Otherwise, I would have been dead,” he said.
The doctors also warned him not to skip the drugs, donated to OAU by the Max Foundation, even for one day. For this reason, he has visited the university from his residence four times.

However, wondering what would have been the situation in the absence of such collaboration between the foundation and the institution’s dermatology department, he said;

“If the Max Foundation had not been doing this and as a patient, you were to spend money for treatment, you would be dead.”

Celebrities / Uber Driver & 4 Arrested Over Death Of Ultimate Search Winner, Hector Joberteh by kingtobi95: 1:24am On Sep 15, 2017
The Lagos state police command yesterday, Thursday, September 14, paraded were five suspected killers of a former winner of the Gulder Ultimate Search, Hector Joberteh.

The suspects – William Igana, Valentine Igana, Abdul-Rasheed Jimoh, Francis Madu, Usman Adeyemi – were alleged to have been involved in the death of the 38-year-old at his house on Olufowora Close, New Oko-Oba, Agege.

Recall, Joberteh, who was laid to rest yesterday, was shot dead on September 3, 2017, after he was trailed to his home from the airport where he had gone to pick up his younger brother.

The Lagos state CP, Imohimi, said the suspects were arrested following painstaking efforts by policemen.

However, one of the suspects, William, a Uber driver that drove the suspects to Joberteh’s house, said he didn’t know their mission when he was hired.

He noted that he had just started with the online transport company when he was hired by the men who later turned out to be killers.

He said;

“I had just been registered under the Uber platform and I needed an android phone to facilitate the business.

I called my brother, Valentine, to help me with a phone. He introduced me to his friend, JK. JK said he had a phone I could use, which he offered for sale at N10,000.

“The next day, JK called me to take him to Yaba. On our way there, we stopped and picked two other guys. I charged them N10,000 for the service, but they gave me N8,000 and promised to pay the balance later.”

He said after the trip to Yaba, JK called him the following day and asked him to take him and his friends to Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He said he charged N20,000 for the service, which they promised to pay.

“On our way to Sango, they asked me to stop at a bushy path. They brought out a gun, which they pointed at my head. They threatened to kill me if I shouted. Two of them came down and walked to a house where they shot two persons.

“They jumped back into the vehicle and asked me to drive off, which I did. But at a point, I stopped the car and told them I wasn’t going again; they insisted that I continue driving. JK said the only reason he wouldn’t kill me was because my brother, Valentine, was his good friend.

“I never knew they were into any criminal activity. I was only doing my business. I was arrested by the police through my brother, Valentine.”

Joberteh’s phone was said to have been stolen by the assailants.

According to PUNCH Metro, the phone was tracked to Jimoh, who bought it at Computer Village, Ikeja.

In his statement, Jimoh said he never knew the phone was stolen.

He said he had innocently gone to Computer Village to buy a phone, adding that he bought the phone for N15,000 from Madu.

On his part, Madu claimed an engineer friend who came with Adeyemi, sold the phone to him.

He said he bought the phone for N7,500 and sold it for N15,000.

Eighteen-year-old Adeyemi said his uncle, one Ismaila, owned the phone.

Imohimi said the command was making efforts to arrest other suspects, adding that the men would be charged to court at the end of investigations.

Properties / Candle Fire Burns Two-storey Building In Lagos, A Tenant Dead by kingtobi95: 10:03am On Sep 13, 2017
We have lost everything, victims cry out

A tenant was burnt to death yesterday while a landlord’s son was injured during a morning inferno, which gutted a house at the Somolu area of Lagos State. The fire, which ravaged a storey-building, started about 1a.m. from the first floor, where the landlord’s son’s apartment is located.

The landlord’s son, Abiola, was said to have lit a candle and fell asleep. Unfortunately, the candle fell on the rug in his apartment.

The rug caught fire which spread to other apartments. The tenant, identified simply as Al-Wajud, was said to be drunk before going to bed and thus, was deep in his sleep when the fire started. He died before he could be rushed to the hospital.

The incident, which happened at House 4, Akinrinlo Street, threw occupants and members of the community into mourning.

One of the victims, who identified himself simply as Adebolawe, said: “We were sleeping about 1a.m. when we heard a loud sound from the roof of the building. “Immediately we heard the sound, every tenant in the house rushed out only to see flame on the roof of the building.

We started running around, looking for water to put out the fire. While we were looking for water, my wife was struggling to rescue the children and to savage some of our property. Unfortunately we couldn’t bring out anything. Fire consumed everything.”

Another victim, Mr. Akeem Ismaila, said: “The fire destroyed all I have laboured for in life. It was a terrible situation; right now, I don’t know where to start from.

Even my wife’s money, which she was supposed to use to stock her shop, was burnt to ashes. My children wouldn’t be able to go to school as their uniform and school materials were all burnt.

“Government should come to our aid. This is not the first time the building would go up in flames; two years ago, the building caught fire but was later rebuilt. This is another fire.” Firefighters were said to have arrived the scene about 3a.m., after the fire had burnt down the whole building.

The Kaduna State Police Command on Sunday confirmed that a director with the Kaduna State Ministry of Education that was abducted by suspected kidnappers had regained his freedom.

Recall, the victim, John Gorah, was abducted at midnight on September 3, at his residence located in Mararaban Rido, Kaduna.

The kidnappers called the family and demanded for N40 million ransom.

Now, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Muktar Aliyu, made the confirmation in an interview in Kaduna.

He explained that the Director, who was released in the early hours of Sunday, had since reunited with his family.

He also disclosed that a nursing mother that was abducted along with the Director in the neighborhood, leaving her three-week-old baby, had also regained her freedom.

He, however, did not confirm whether ransom was paid or not.

He said;

“The command remained committed to fight crime and criminality to standstill where every citizen can move freely,“

Aliyu appealed to residents to always give security agents useful information to enable them take proactive measures to prevent similar incident.

Celebrities / Tyrese Gibson Calls Out The Rock For Dumping Fast And Furious by kingtobi95: 12:25pm On Sep 10, 2017

American actor, Tyrese Gibson, has taken to social media to call out The Rock for trying to dump the Fast and Furious franchise, and this has stirred major reactions.

In case you are not following the action-packed films, The Rock plays former agent Luke Hobbs, a fierce character many fans agree brought new edge to Fast and Furious. In the 8th film, Fate of the Furious, the part-time wrestler was paired off with iconic actor, Jason Statham, who plays Deckard Shaw.

Earlier rumours suggested that there was the possibility of Universal Pictures starting a spin-off film that will centre solely on the two characters of The Rock and Statham.

But, as some sources claim, Vin Diesel(who plays Dominic Toretto) was not comfortable with it.

As though that was not all, during the making of Fate 8, The Rock took to Instagram to blast his male costars, saying they have no sense of discipline. He labelled them “chicken s**t and candy a**es”, with sources saying the rant was targeted at Vin Diesel.

At the heat of the incident, Tyrese Gibson stood beside Vin, posted photos of himself with him along with a lengthy message in which he called Vin his “brother”.

That issue was eventually resolved and Fate of the Furious did exceedingly well at the theatres(sweeping some 1.163 billion dollars).

Now, Tyrese is revealing that The Rock is leaving the franchise for a solo role created for his fictional character, Luke Hobbs.

Celebrities / Hushpuppi Replies Mr Ye And Proves That He Was In The VIP Section Of The Event by kingtobi95: 10:28am On Sep 10, 2017

Malaysia based Nigerian big boy, Ray Hushpuppi, has replied another big boy, Mr. Ye, who called him out yesterday claiming Hushpuppi sat at the regular section of an event and faked it to his followers..

Here's what he wrote;

“I tell you something Mr whatever you call yourself, there’s enough space for everyone to do their thing without telling lies about other people to make yourself feel good or equal to me.

You see why I don’t Bleep with you boys that dubai is your “abroad”. Smh”.”

“I said “regular spot” meaning place me or a typical Nigerian often be, not where I’m sitting. I see you so happy seeing you came to the same place as me. You couldn’t wait to tell the world but cos I curved you and didn’t recognize your existence you decided to lie”.

I know how bad it makes you feel alive to have my name in your mouth, I pick not to respond to you cos you are in the category of the people who don’t deserve my response. If you want people to see you as HushPuppi’s superior, oya you are my boss, Happy Now?

“Funny thing is, this analysis of my post and what I write is coming from someone who I have BLOCKED several months ago, why you stalking me? Why you and your niggas talking about me? You a fan, leave me alone ooo, make una beg am o, this is beyond obsession smh”

That dude’s one eye must have made him think that place is some sort of VIP section. Dude leave throwing shade at people who don’t acknowledge your existence and go and represent Nigeria in disabled sports.”

Hushpuppi didn’t stop the rant there, he also went on to share a video asking the waiters at the events if there’s is some sort of “special spot” or “regular spot”, and they replied, “Everyone is VIP here”
