You may have heard that multitasking is bad for you, but new studies show that it kills your performance and may even damage your brain. Every time you multitask you are not just harming your performance in the moment; you may very well be damaging an area of your brain that’s critical to your future success at work…Travis Bradberry Research conducted at Stanford University found that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. The researchers found that people who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information cannot pay attention, recall information or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time. The Stanford researchers compared groups of people based on their tendency to multitask and their belief that it helps their performance. They found that heavy multitaskers — those who multitask a lot and feel that it boosts their performance — were actually worse at multitasking than those who like to do a single thing at a time. The frequent multitaskers performed worse because they had more trouble organizing their thoughts and filtering out irrelevant information, and they were slower at switching from one task to another. Brain damage from multitasking?..find out It was long believed that cognitive impairment from multitasking was temporary, but new research suggests otherwise. Researchers at the University of Sussex in the UK compared the amount of time people spend on multiple devices (such as texting while watching TV) to MRI scans of their brains. They found that high multitaskers had less brain density in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region responsible for empathy as well as cognitive and emotional control. While more research is needed to determine if multitasking is physically damaging the brain (versus existing brain damage that predisposes people to multitask), it’s clear that multitasking has negative effects. Multitasking lowers IQ Research also shows that, in addition to slowing you down, multitasking lowers your IQ. A study at the University of London found that participants who multitasked during cognitive tasks experienced IQ score declines that were similar to what they’d expect if they had smoked marijuana or stayed up all night. IQ drops of 15 points for multitasking men lowered their scores to the average range of an 8-year-old child. https://www.toricity.com/education/smart-people-dont-multitask/

The Federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari has exhibited so far a corruption tendency of no proportion! A dungeon of gluttonous thieves, liars and morally bankrupt mofos called polithieficians, that’s what they are! The Vice President who is a Pastor, Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria lies with reckless abandon without any atom of shame! On Friday last week at the APC flag off in Onitsha, Osinbajo made an open declaration to confirm that the federal government has paid $2bn for the second Niger bridge. In his exact words: “In fact I am being reminded that just two days ago, the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) paid $2bn for that same project. So we will definitely see our second Niger bridge soon. We will not make promises we cannot keep”. Here are some contradicting facts Let us not forget that the second Niger bridge project was awarded to Julius Berger in the year 2014 by Ex President GEJ at N177bn. Julius Berger was supposed to work on the basis of Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer. Hence, the FG will contribute 28% of the funds while Julius Berger completes it. Now they said they paid $2bn dollars which is equivalent to N712bn, meaning an additional whooping N535bn. How come? Again, as at September 2017, Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Fund stood at $2bn according to the MD/CEO of Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, Uche Orji. Hence, it is preposterous to say that the government paid $2bn for the second Niger bridge, being the exact amount in our SWF account. Meanwhile, on the basis of corruption and accountability for public funds, let us compare and contrast this. The total contract sum for the 42.5km world longest Jiaozhou Bay bridge in China is $1.5bn. And Osinbajo is claiming to have paid a whooping $2bn for a mere 11.5km second Niger bridge which was awarded at N177bn ($325m) by the previous administration that they termed corrupt. Who are we deceiving? It is either that Osinbajo is a mere toy in the government house that doesn’t know what is happening around him, or he has deliberately made up his mind to tell bloody and blatant lies to Anambra people who are very eager to see the dream of second Niger bridge realised. His aim? To score cheap political points for Tony Nwoye. Whichever way, we are tired of politics founded and embedded in lies. We hope to get rid of this messy administration come 2019. But until then, I say ‘No way for APC in Anambra come November 18th, for their mission is simple; to steal, to kill and to destroy’! https://www.toricity.com/opinion/deceits-clueless-government/ |

By Ubaka Chijioke Some few years back when asked about his charity foundations in Africa, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook had this to say: "I know there are a lot of brains wasting in that continent because of lack of resources to harness them. I am the CEO of Facebook today because I grew up in the USA where the government provided access to electricity and Internet. I might not have been who I am if I was born an African". Today ladies and gentlemen, I present you Mr Sebastian Kurz, a 31-year-old conservative, who is set to become the next chancellor of Austria and Europe's youngest leader. Beside him is his girlfriend Susanne. Before Sunday's election, Sebastian was the country's foreign minister. We haven't forgotten still the recent feat achieved by the 38 years old Emmanuel Macrom, when he emerged as the president of France. Someone wrote this: "A 31 years old man in Nigeria is probably in his parent's house, unemployed and broke, eating free food and maybe bothered or not. This same 31 old Nigerian man is contended supporting Buhari on Facebook without seeing the nexus between the failed Buhari leadership in Abuja and his present unemployment predicament. The worst and scariest phrase I always hear as a Nigerian youth is: "The government cannot provide jobs for you". If the government cannot offer me a job, what else did they do for me to prove my citizenship? My parents paid my fees all through school till university. My parents bought my text books and other study materials. My parents financed my research project in school. My parents have been paying my medical bills from infant till this age. My Internet access, electricity bills, water bills and other bills are taken care of by my parents. My parents aren't even on the government pay roll. So, what dividend is an average Nigerian youth entitled to in the cause of his self development and empowerment? I weep for my generation! Some of us are wasting away our youths forgetting that time waits for no one. The condition in Nigeria is not helping matters at all, but then my generation too are not ready to push for change. I ask myself and other young people reading this, what are you doing with your life? Are you happy with the way Nigeria is at the moment? What are you doing to push for change?" I say no to recycling of leaders who see no potential in her youths. Join hands let us push together for the change. Don't settle for less when you're entitled to more. https://www.toricity.com/general/foolery-old-eye-opener-youths/ |
Referendums have been in the news lately — be it the Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum held on September 25, 2017 or the Catalonian on that was held on October 1. After a resounding ‘Yes’ for an independent state, Catalonia is set to declare independence on October 9. The United Kingdom held one on 2016 for what is now known as ‘Brexit’, in 2014 Scots held a referendum on whether to exit the United Kingdom, with demand for a second one coming in strong. New Zealand even held one to decide if they need to change their flag, while Turkey had one to decide on constitutional amendments. Did you know that tiny Puerto Rico has had five referendums so far on the question of statehood. Though Puerto Rico is a part of U.S. territory, the island does not have representation in the Congress — meaning they do not have electors who can vote in the presidential and vice-presidential elections, leaving the Puerto Ricans without a say in who runs the country. Did you know? Quebec wanted independence from Canada, twice Quebec, the only French-speaking province of Canada’s 13 provinces, has an active secessionist movement. The province wanted sovereignty and independence from Canada on the basis that their unique culture and Francophone identity might be assimilated by the rest of Canada. Both referendums, held in 1980 and 1995, failed as the voters voted to remain a part of Canada. Did you know? Liberia is the first African republic to have self-proclaimed independence And it did so through the Liberian Independence referendum in 1846. The Republic of Liberia actually began as a settlement of African-American people, both those who were freed from slavery and were born free. The country, which survived the “Scramble for Africa” held a referendum in 1846 in which about 52% of voters opted for independence. The country then declared its independence the following year, becoming the first African republic to do so. Did you know that India has had six referendums so far Of the six, three were held during Independence. Sylhet, then a small Bengali speaking Muslim-majority city surrounded by a Hindu-majority Assam opted to join Bangladesh in 1947. Similarly, the North Western Frontier Province, what is today known as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, too opted to join Pakistan. Did you know? Nigeria have no room for referendum in her constitution. The tension have been high about the secessionist group IPOB (Indigenous people of Biafra) requesting for a referendum in order to determine their fate as they claim that the south eastern part of Nigeria is been marginalised. But the bad news is that Nigerian constitution has no express provision on referendum despite series of amendments, thus until the constitution is further amended to make provision for referendum, the 1999 constitution of Nigeria being the supreme law of the land has no window or room for referendum. https://www.toricity.com/fact/5-facts-referendums-might-not-known/ |
