Politics › Nigerians Slam Sheikh Gumi Over Ransom-for-kidnappers Comments by Kingzjayzee(op): 10:30am On May 19 |
Controversial Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has come under heavy criticism from Nigerians on social media after he appeared to suggest that armed groups involved in kidnapping rely on ransom payments to finance their operations.
In the comments that sparked outrage, Gumi was quoted as saying that criminals involved in banditry were under pressure from security operations and therefore needed funds to sustain their activities.
“The terrorists need all the money they’re getting from kidnapping. It’s not like they are living luxurious lives; the government is putting too much pressure on them so they need money to finance their war machines,” he was quoted as saying during an interview with AIT News.
He further added: “If they leave banditry, they won’t have source of financing their war machine,” suggesting that ongoing security pressure contributes to their actions.
The remarks triggered widespread backlash across social media, with many Nigerians accusing him of justifying or sympathising with criminal groups responsible for widespread killings and kidnappings.
Reactions from users online reflected anger and disbelief at the comments.
@UmehWrites wrote: “He actually said ‘The govt is bombing us’ like ‘US’… he’s announcing he’s part of the terrorists. I try to avoid this man’s videos cos I don’t know how he still hasn’t been locked behind bars.”
@mc1yke added: “Boko Haram is a state-sponsored terrorist group… why would a government let people like Gumi work freely in a country like Nigeria where Boko Haram is killing thousands?”
@SwitchNigeriaNG wrote: “Tinubu would never take him out because like Miyetti Allah… I however believe, if he wins second tenure, he might damn the consequences and put people like Gumi in jail.”
@NigIsland said: “It is a total disgrace that anyone would try to justify kidnapping… These people are not struggling, they are cowards who should be stopped.”
@Benjinku noted: “Saudi Arabia arrested and locked this terrorist up… but Nigeria is allowing him to move around freely and openly sympathise with terrorists on TV.”
@KingByronX questioned the statement, saying: “I genuinely don’t understand why anyone would make a statement like this when innocent Nigerians are suffering daily from kidnapping and terrorism.”
@PhoenixTv01 reacted more strongly: “Lives are being lost daily… and this old, useless, foolish… white bearded he goat is busy defending perpetrators of this evil…”
@FubaraD1 also wrote: “Why is this still walking free out there? This is a double standard of justice.”
The comments have continued to generate heated debate online, with many calling for accountability over statements perceived as sympathetic to armed groups. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/05/nigerians-slam-sheikh-gumi-over-ransom-for-kidnappers-comments/amp/

Crime › Pastor Amos Isah Remanded Over Alleged Rape Of Minor by Kingzjayzee(op): 8:52pm On May 14 |
Abuja Pastor Amos Isah Remanded In Custody After Pleading Not Guilty To Raping 14-Year-Old Church Member
The embattled founder of the Prophetic Victory Voice of Fire Ministry, Pastor Amos Isah, has been remanded in custody pending the submission of his earlier bail records, as his high-profile rape trial resumed on May 14, 2026, before Justice Modupe Osho-Adebiyi at the FCT High Court in Gwarimpa, Abuja.
Justice Osho-Adebiyi ordered that his remand be at the discretion of the court.
The 39-year-old cleric pleaded not guilty to all eight counts filed against him, including rape under the Child's Rights Act 2003, sexual exploitation, coercion, emotional and psychological abuse, gross indecency, and abduction of a minor.
The teenage survivor, identified in court documents as B ZJ (14 years old), accused the pastor of luring her into his church's newly constructed auditorium in the Gwagwalada Area Council under false pretences on or about May 26, 2025, locking the doors, and forcefully having sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 273 of the Penal Code Laws.”
The court adjourned the matter until June 30, 2026, for further hearing.
SaharaReporters exclusively obtained a video showing Pastor Amos at the victim's residence at night pleading with her parents for forgiveness.
Sources close to the matter confirmed that the embattled pastor had been desperately seeking a private settlement as the criminal case against him gained irreversible momentum.
"Now Amos is secretly begging; the case is properly starting on May 14," a source familiar with the development revealed.
The visit, captured on video, has been widely interpreted as an attempt to derail justice through intimidation and backdoor negotiations.
FAMILY ALLEGES LONG PATTERN OF PREYING ON MINORS
Isah was arrested on June 18, 2025, following a formal complaint by the victim's father. The teenager alleged that the pastor had lured her into the church premises, locked the doors, and sexually assaulted her.
"This girl is just one of many. He has been preying on minors for years," a family member told SaharaReporters.
Relatives of the victim alleged that Isah has a long-standing pattern of preying on minors, often luring them into his car or secluded parts of the church under the guise of "spiritual mentorship."
The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) had completed its investigation months ago, yet the pastor's arraignment was delayed for weeks, raising troubling questions about the willingness of the system to prosecute powerful religious figures. https://saharareporters.com/2026/05/14/breaking-abuja-pastor-amos-isah-remanded-custody-after-pleading-not-guilty-raping-14

Politics › Nigeria Seeks Fresh $1.2billion World Bank Loan, Second Largest Under Tinubu Gov by Kingzjayzee(op): 8:40am On May 14 |
The administration of President Bola Tinubu is preparing to secure another major loan from the World Bank, with the Nigerian government advancing plans for a fresh $1.25bn facility that could become the second-largest World Bank loan obtained under the current administration. Findings showed that the proposed facility, titled Nigeria Actions for Investment and Jobs Acceleration, has reached an advanced stage in the World Bank’s approval process and is expected to be presented to the institution’s board on June 26, 2026. The planned borrowing comes amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s rising debt profile and continued dependence on external financing to sustain economic reforms, stabilise the economy, and drive investment and job creation initiatives. If approved, the $1.25bn loan would rank behind only the $1.5bn Reforms for Economic Stabilisation to Enable Transformation Development Policy Financing secured by the Tinubu administration in June 2024, PUNCH reports. At the current exchange rate of N1,361.4 to the dollar, the proposed facility is valued at about N1.70tn, highlighting the scale of financing being pursued by the Federal Government as it implements key fiscal and monetary reforms. Documents contained in a World Bank Programme Information Document obtained on Monday showed that the loan has moved beyond the concept and appraisal phases, signalling that discussions between Nigerian authorities and the lender have intensified ahead of final consideration. The timing of the proposed approval is also significant, as it is expected to come about six months and 21 days before Nigeria’s next presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the revised timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission. If eventually approved and fully disbursed, Nigeria’s external debt stock is projected to rise from N74.43tn, equivalent to $51.86bn as of December 31, 2025, to at least N76.13tn or about $53.11bn. The country’s total public debt profile could also increase from N159.28tn to approximately N160.98tn. In dollar terms, Nigeria’s total public debt may climb from $110.97bn to about $112.22bn. The proposed facility is expected to support reforms targeted at improving competitiveness, encouraging private sector investment, and creating jobs across critical sectors of the economy. Overttime there have been concerns that the planned borrowing further reflects the Federal Government’s increasing reliance on multilateral loans to fund economic programmes at a time when Nigerians continue to grapple with inflation, rising living costs, and the effects of ongoing economic reforms. With the country’s debt obligations already mounting, the fresh loan is likely to renew debates over the sustainability of Nigeria’s borrowing strategy and the long-term impact on public finances. Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that Nigeria’s Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, warned that the President Bola Tinubu-led government could walk away from World Bank loan arrangements if approval and disbursement delays continue to affect project timelines and development plans. The warning was contained in a statement issued last week Friday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, following a courtesy visit by a World Bank delegation led by Mrs Treed Lane in Abuja. During the meeting, Ogunjimi stressed that Nigeria expected faster processing of loan facilities because the funds were repayable and not grants. He said, “ If approvals take more than six months, the Nigerian Government may no longer honour such arrangements.” The Accountant-General noted that lengthy approval timelines could disrupt project execution and weaken broader development objectives. There have been concerns over Nigeria's reliance on loans especially under the current administration of Bola Tinubu. https://saharareporters.com/2026/05/12/nigeria-seeks-fresh-12billion-world-bank-loan-second-largest-under-tinubu-govt

Politics › Kazeem Oyewale Denies Plot To Kill Adeleke’s Son B-Red, Seeks Police Protection by Kingzjayzee(op): 12:17pm On May 12 |
The acting chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Osun State, Kazeem Oyewale, has denied allegations that he attempted to kill the son of the state governor, Adebayo Adeleke, popularly known as B-Red.
In a recent statement released by the Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, the government claimed that B-Red escaped an assassination attempt and linked the incident to hoodlums allegedly led by Oyewale, also known as Asiri Eniba.
Alimi further said the incident happened in the Oke-Fia area, a few metres from the Osun Government House.
But reacting to the allegations during an interview with journalists in Osogbo on Monday, Oyewale, who threatened to approach the court for redress, accused the state government of making false allegations against him.
Oyewale, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, however, called on President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to protect him and his followers from further harassment by government officials.
He said, “I want to call the attention of President Bola Tinubu, the IGP and Nigerians. They should come to my aid because the governor and Kolapo Alimi (Commissioner for Information) have called for my arrest over untrue allegations, and they are even threatening me.
“Those after me killed my younger brother in November 2022, and they have not released the corpse to us till today. This is another election cycle in Osun State.
“They have been trailing me and want to kill me. They are lying against me, making claims that they cannot substantiate, among which is the allegation that I want to kill the governor’s son.
“They killed my younger brother and now they are alleging that I am behind the destruction of billboards. It does not sound logical. I don’t know anything about these allegations. This is the style they adopted in 2022. I am a member of the APC. What is my business with Accord? Any time something goes wrong within their party, they will blame me for it.”
He urged his “followers and supporters not to entertain fear because nothing will happen to them. They used the style of indiscriminate arrest of NURTW members in 2022, but it can’t happen again. That is why they have embarked on a campaign of calumny against my personality.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/osun-nurtw-boss-denies-plot-to-kill-adelekes-son-seeks-police-protection/%3famp

Phones › Nigeria’s Telcos Recover N2tn As Airtime Lending Stays Suspended by Kingzjayzee(op): 9:36am On May 11 |
Millions of Nigerians have found themselves unable to make calls in recent weeks, caught in the crossfire of a regulatory dispute that has upended one of the country's most widely used digital financial services.Nigeria's telecom operators have recovered more than N2 trillion from subscribers in an aggressive debt recovery drive that has left millions of mobile lines restricted from making calls, as borrowing services remain suspended. The enforcement by MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and 9mobile comes after operators failed to meet new compliance conditions set by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. This forced a halt to airtime and data lending services and triggered a nationwide repayment push. HOW THE CRISIS UNFOLDED The aggressive enforcement follows new compliance requirements introduced by the FCCPC, which telecom operators reportedly failed to meet. This led to the suspension of airtime and data lending services and triggered a nationwide push to recover outstanding debts. As part of the measures, indebted subscribers have had their lines restricted from making calls until their loans are fully repaid. The disruption has been widespread. The impact has rippled across homes, markets, and transport routes, where millions rely on mobile connectivity for daily survival. The airtime and data lending service is particularly vital for low-income users who depend on it as a financial bridge between payday cycles, with the industry valued at over N400 billion annually. A LEGAL DISPUTE ADDS COMPLEXITY The crisis has been further complicated by a growing legal dispute involving Nairtime Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Optasia. A Federal High Court in Abuja, in an interim injunction granted on 24 April, ordered MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria to halt any disruption to Nairtime's access to critical telecom infrastructure, including USSD, SMS, short codes, and billing systems. However, checks indicate that call and data lending services linked to the platform remain unavailable, suggesting that the court directive has yet to translate into full operational restoration. A DEEPER INFRASTRUCTURE WARNING Industry stakeholders warn that the disruption highlights deeper challenges within Nigeria's digital economy, where telecom infrastructure increasingly supports financial services. Millions of users who rely on airtime and data borrowing remain disconnected, caught between regulatory policies, corporate disputes, and the need for affordable communication. As pressure mounts on both sides, the episode has exposed just how fragile the intersection of telecom and fintech services can be. https://www.techcrier.com/2026/05/nigerias-telcos-recover-over-n2.html?m=1

Christianity Etc › Don’t Marry Women Who Can’t Cook, Demand Costly Weddings, Adeboye Warns Men by Kingzjayzee(op): 1:31pm On May 09 |
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has shared a set of marital guidelines for young men warning that marrying for beauty alone or ignoring practical foundations could lead to a “ deep trap.” In an address during the May edition of the Holy Ghost Service on Saturday, the cleric emphasised that spiritual discernment and domestic competence must outweigh physical attraction and social status. Addressing the men, Adeboye warned against being blinded by physical appearance. He cautioned that a lack of prayer could lead a man to inadvertently “choose a demon” because of outward beauty. “ There are many demons that are very beautiful. If you marry because of beauty, you might choose a demon. I’m not saying all beautiful people are demonic. If it’s beauty alone that leads you into marriage, it’s a deep trap,” he said. He also urged men not to marry a woman who cannot cook or is not hospitable. “ Don’t marry a girl who cannot cook. We are talking of excellent counsel. Only I can tell you these things. Even if a prophet says this is your wife, if she can’t cook, say ‘Thank you, keep her,'” he said, citing Sarah and the Shunamite woman as biblical examples of hospitable cooks. He further advised men to call off any wedding where the woman demands a ceremony that would lead to debt. “ Don’t marry a girl who does not do things in moderation. No matter how close you are to a wedding and your girl is suggesting a wedding that is going to cost you everything you have and get you into debt, call it off, ” he directed. On cosmetics, Adeboye warned against “ excessive makeup,” false hair, and false nails. He said, “ The girl you are going to marry must not be heavily made up. If you look at the girl, the hair on her head is from India. The eyelashes are false. The nails of the hand are false. The nails of the toes are false. You must ask yourself the question, ‘What is behind the mask?’ Because one day you will discover that excessive makeup is simply saying there is something to hide. “ I want my boys to end up well. When you check the Bible very well in 2 Kings 9:30-37, you will discover that the matron saint of makeup is Jezebel.” PUNCH reports that while speaking with the church workers on Saturday, Adeboye said that Nigeria’s next president, ahead of the 2027 general elections, has already been determined by God. He reportedly stressed that the outcome of the election is beyond human influence, insisting that divine will ultimately prevail. https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/dont-marry-women-who-cant-cook-demand-costly-weddings-adeboye-warns-men/%3famp

Celebrities › ‘I Nearly Died In That Fight’ – Carter Efe Protests Unpaid N50m Prize by Kingzjayzee(op): 3:40pm On May 06 |
Controversy has erupted following claims by Carter Efe that he has yet to receive the N50 million prize promised after his victory over Portable in a celebrity boxing match recently held.
Efe secured victory over controversial singer Habib Okikiola, also known as Portable, in the bout held last Friday, clinching the top prize after a closely contested fight between the two entertainers.
Days after the high-profile encounter, however, the comedian said the promised N50 million reward has yet to be paid, further fuelling controversy surrounding the event.
The development comes amid earlier remarks from Portable, who had questioned the outcome of the fight, alleging that the judges’ decision in favour of Carter Efe may have been influenced by the organisers.
Notably, immediately after the “Chaos in the Ring” bout, ace businessman Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money, publicly pledged to redeem the N50 million prize promised to the winner.
“E-Money never fails when he promises. I’m ready to redeem that N50 million pledge. Congratulations to Carter Efe, the winner. It’s been a wonderful night of entertainment,” he said at the time.
Despite that assurance, there has been no official clarification regarding the delay, while neither the organisers nor Emeka Okonkwo has explained why the payment is yet to be made.
In a new video shared on social media, Carter Efe expressed frustration over the situation, accusing the organisers of failing to honour their financial commitment.
He said the experience of the bout was physically demanding and insisted that the promised reward should be released.
“Dem never give me my money oo. I never see N50 million ooo. I nearly die for that fight, I never see the N50 million. Make dem pay me the N50 oo,” he lamented.
Attempts to get reactions from the organisers and E-Money were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. https://independent.ng/i-nearly-died-in-that-fight-carter-efe-protests-unpaid-n50m-prize/

Politics › Despite Certificate Forgery Scandal, Uche Nnaji Joins PDP For Guber Bid by Kingzjayzee(op): 12:16pm On May 05 |
A former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has “quietly” moved from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite a certificate forgery scandal on his neck.
Mr Nnaji had been a member of the APC under which he unsuccessfully contested in the 2023 governorship election in Enugu State.
But his membership of the APC became shaky following his resignation as minister in October, which came three days after PREMIUM TIMES published an investigation that exposed how he forged his University of Nigeria Nsukka Degree certificate and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.
Quiet defection
Mr Nnaji neither publicly announced his resignation from the APC nor his defection to the PDP.
PREMIUM TIMES reports that the former minister has been holding political gatherings with some of his supporters and PDP members in Enugu State in recent times.
But Samuel Anyanwu, the national secretary of the PDP faction backed by Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, confirmed to this newspaper on Sunday that Mr Nnaji has now joined the party.
Robert Ngwu, the spokesperson to Mr Nnaji, did not respond to several calls and a text message seeking clarifications on the former minister’s membership of the PDP and quiet defection to the opposition party.
Governorship ambition despite ongoing ICPC probe
Upon enquiry, Mr Anyanwu said he could not confirm if Mr Nnaji had purchased the PDP’s expression of interest and nomination forms to contest in the party’s governorship primary in Enugu State.
The PDP national secretary said he could only confirm that the former minister has joined the opposition party.
However, PREMIUM TIMES gathered that Mr Nnaji, on Saturday, inaugurated Uche Ndi Enugu Grassroots Movement, a support group for his 2027 Enugu governorship bid.
The former minister also spoke on his plans for Enugu if elected governor of the state.
Meanwhile, in mid-April, Sun newspaper reported that Mr Nnaji pledged to serve for one four-year tenure if elected governor of Enugu State, indicating that he will be contesting in the forthcoming 2027 governorship poll in Enugu.
“I want to state this clearly and without any ambiguity; I will serve only one term of four years if elected governor in 2027,” Mr Nnaji pledged, arguing that he does not need more than four years to turn things around in Enugu.
The former minister made the pledge despite not publicly resigning from the APC or announcing his defection to the PDP, although he has been seen frequently moving around with some known PDP members in the state.
Mr Nnaji is under investigation over certificate forgery by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
PREMIUM TIMES exclusively reported in February that the ICPC began an investigation into Mr Nnaji’s forgery scandal.
Insiders had told this newspaper that the former minister could be prosecuted if the investigation shows that he truly forged his credentials.
This newspaper exclusively reported in March that an investigative panel set up by Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, found that Mr Nnaji indeed forged his degree and NYSC certificates.
Background
In October 2023, PREMIUM TIMES began investigating Mr Nnaji’s academic records.
The then-minister had submitted a degree and NYSC certificates to President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Senate during his ministerial confirmation in 2023.
He claimed he obtained a degree certificate from UNN, where he purportedly graduated in 1985.
Apparently disturbed that he was under scrutiny, Mr Nnaji filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja to block both UNN and its vice-chancellor, Simon Ortuanya, a professor, from releasing his academic records.
Apart from the UNN and its vice-chancellor, the minister of education, the NUC, the university’s registrar, a former UNN Acting Vice-Chancellor, Oguejiofor Ujam, and the Senate of the university were listed as defendants in the suit.
However, the politician, through his legal team, recently applied for an out-of-court settlement.
Before the then-minister minister could obtain an injunction from the court, Mr Ortuanya had responded to PREMIUM TIMES’ FOI letter, confirming that Mr Nnaji had forged his UNN degree certificate.
The UNN registrar would shortly thereafter corroborate Mr Ortuanya’s position, indicating that although Mr Nnaji was admitted to the university in 1981, he neither graduated nor was issued any certificate.
NYSC authorities, in response to a separate FOI letter from PREMIUM TIMES, had disowned the discharge certificate in possession of the then-minister.
Mr Nnaji resigned from his position as minister three days after this newspaper published the investigation exposing how he forged his degree and NYSC certificates.
Many Nigerians had called for Mr Nnaji’s prosecution, maintaining that his resignation was inadequate in light of his violations of various Nigerian laws, including the Criminal Code Act.
Two months ago, a legal practitioner, Liborous Oshoma, criticised the Nigerian government for failing to prosecute Mr Nnaji over the certificate forgery scandal, maintaining that people like the former minister “should be prosecuted and banned from holding public office to serve as a deterrent to others.” https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/south-south-regional/876779-despite-certificate-forgery-scandal-ex-minister-uche-nnaji-quietly-moves-to-pdp-for-governorship-bid.html
