A former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, AGF, Akin Olujinmi, SAN, has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that the allegation of forgery of a National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, discharge certificate brought against President Bola Tinubu by Atiku Abubakar was unfounded, baseless and speculative.

Olujinmi, SAN, who has emerged as lead counsel for Tinubu in the eligibility suit, accused Atiku of failing to provide any iota of evidence from the NYSC before arriving at his allegation of forgery.

In a preliminary objection he filed against Atiku’s suit, which is seeking the disqualification of Tinubu from the 2027 presidential election, the ex-AGF faulted the former vice president on all fronts on the basis of the certificate forgery allegation.

In the court papers, the senior lawyer argued that both Atiku and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) failed to provide evidence from the NYSC disclaiming the issuance of the discharge certificate to Tinubu or produce the original document from which the alleged forgery was made.

Atiku and ADC have, in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1888/2026, applied for an order of the court to disqualify Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the 2027 election on the ground that Tinubu submitted a forged NYSC discharge certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to secure clearance for the election.

But while countering the allegation on behalf of Tinubu, Olujinmi submitted that, under established laws, a claim of forgery cannot stand without evidence from the issuing authority of the alleged forged document.

Besides, the former AGF argued that the allegation of forgery, being criminal in nature and content, must be proved beyond reasonable doubt under the Evidence Act, but this had not been done by Atiku and ADC.

Olujinmi, SAN, contended that Atiku’s suit was speculative, having been based on hypothetical questions rather than established facts, as he had not shown how his legal rights had been infringed by Tinubu’s nomination.

He argued that parts of the suit were even statute-barred on the ground that any challenge to the submission of Tinubu’s documents to INEC ought to have been filed within 14 days of the submission.

According to him, the case was incompetent as a pre-election matter under the Constitution and the Electoral Act because only an aspirant who participated in a party’s primary could challenge its nomination process.

Holding that Atiku lacked the required legal rights to institute the suit, Olujinmi prayed the court to uphold the preliminary objection and dismiss the suit in its entirety.

A joint counter-affidavit in support of the preliminary objection denied Atiku’s allegation, insisting that no forged certificate was submitted to INEC for either the 2023 or 2027 presidential elections.

The counter-affidavit was deposed to by APC’s Director of Legal Services, Mr Sanusi Samaila, who asserted that Tinubu did not submit Form CF001 to INEC as alleged by Atiku and ADC and maintained that the NYSC had never denied issuing Tinubu a discharge certificate.

According to the legal adviser, all documents submitted by Tinubu to INEC were authentic and accepted by the commission, after which it subsequently published the particulars of the APC’s candidate for both the 2023 and 2027 presidential elections.

The counter-affidavit indicated that Atiku lacked the legal right to challenge Tinubu’s nomination because he was neither a member of the APC nor a participant in the party’s presidential primary that produced Tinubu as its candidate.

According to the counter-affidavit, both Atiku and ADC were not challenging any action of INEC or alleging any breach of the Constitution or the Electoral Act, but were just questioning the APC’s nomination process as an internal affair of the party.

The counter-affidavit also indicated that the APC formally submitted the names of its candidates to INEC on June 26, while INEC acknowledged receipt of Tinubu’s profile on July 11. It therefore asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss the suit.

It will be recalled that Justice Inyang Ekwo, at the last proceedings, fixed September 28 for hearing of the matter.

First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has offered N100,000 cash support each to 2,500 women beneficiaries of an empowerment programme in Imo State, while canvassing votes for the re-election of her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in 2027.

The First Lady announced the cash support on Wednesday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, during her official visit to the South-East to empower women.

She said the empowerment programme is being implemented through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and will benefit 18,500 women across the country when completed.

According to her, 500 women from each of the five South-East states will receive various items, including generators, industrial grinding machines, gas cylinders and ovens, to support their businesses.

She disclosed that Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, had provided additional empowerment items for 2,000 women in the state, bringing the total number of beneficiaries in Imo to 2,500.

In response to the governor’s gesture, she announced an additional N100,000 cash for each beneficiary.

Mrs Tinubu, who appealed to voters in the South-East to support her husband’s re-election, said she wants to enjoy a better Nigeria at old age.

“Make una vote for Mr President, we go work for una and Nigeria go better. I want to enjoy Nigeria at old age, so I will work for Nigeria, for my old age,” she said.

She said the initiative was designed to recognise the role of women in nation-building and economic development.

“Recognising the typical role women play in nation building, this is in line with the agenda of Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises economic growth and sustainable development for all Nigerians, particularly women,” she said.

“Let it serve as a foundation for creating a better life for you and your family,” she urged the beneficiaries.

In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma commended the First Lady for her contributions to nation-building and her commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, saying the people of Imo State appreciated the President’s performance and would support his re-election in 2027.

“Let him know that Imo people are happy with him, that we are happy with his performance. Let him know that he is doing very well, that we stand with him and that we deeply appreciate his resolute commitment to a stronger, more prosperous, safer and more united Nigeria,” Uzodimma said.

“I assure you that we will reciprocate this love. We will stand firmly behind our beloved President in January 2027. We will speak with one united, unequivocal voice to stand by those who have consistently stood by us,” he added.

FAMFA Oil, the company that made Folorunsho Alakija Africa's richest woman, faces a federal demand for 8.85 billion naira in unpaid customs duty on a single aircraft, about $6.7 million at 1,321.68 naira to the dollar, according to an investigation published by Secrets Reporters on Tuesday.

The Nigerian outlet reports that the company kept a fleet of three Bombardier jets, worth close to $200 million at current list prices, flying in and out of Nigeria for more than a decade on import papers that were expired, backdated or entirely absent. The matter is now before the courts.

The claim arises from a nationwide verification exercise ordered by Nigeria's Comptroller-General of Customs, aimed at privately owned aircraft using Nigerian airspace without properly clearing the country's import regime. An initial sweep ran in the second half of 2021, and a follow-up in mid-2024 cross-checked ownership records, temporary importation permits and Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority clearance certificates against the aircraft actually parked on Nigerian tarmacs.

A temporary importation permit allows an aircraft to enter the country for a limited period without full duty, on condition it leaves again. Keeping one beyond that window, or operating without one, makes the aircraft liable for the duty in full.

FAMFA has not commented publicly, and none of the allegations has been tested in court.

The company sits at the centre of one of the more remarkable fortunes in African business. Alakija began her career as a secretary at the Merchant Bank of Nigeria, studied fashion design in England in the early 1980s and returned to found the high-end label Supreme Stitches, whose customers included Maryam Babangida, wife of the then military ruler Ibrahim Babangida.

Her company received an oil prospecting licence in 1993 covering a 617,000-acre block about 100 kilometres offshore. It was considered high risk and low value at the time.

FAMFA entered a joint venture with Star Deep Water Petroleum, a Chevron subsidiary, in September 1996, transferring a 40% stake. The block became OML 127 and the Agbami field within it began producing in 2008, turning out to be one of the most productive deepwater discoveries in Nigerian waters.

The Nigerian government then tried to take it. It claimed a 40% interest, followed by a further 10%, and Alakija fought the acquisition through the courts. The Supreme Court ruled in her favour in 2012, ending a decade-long battle, and the family retains 60% of the block.

FAMFA is jointly owned. The company said in 2021 that Corporate Affairs Commission records showed Folorunso Alakija holding 5,000,000 ordinary shares, or 50%, with her husband Modupe Folarin Alakija holding the other half. He chairs the company and she is executive vice chairman.

Forbes has valued her fortune at around $1 billion in recent rankings, with her position fluctuating on oil prices and the valuation of Nigerian upstream assets.

The family also owns Rose of Sharon Group and Dayspring Property Development.

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has pledged to provide between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power for every Nigerian roof within 11 months of taking office if elected in 2027.

Adebayo made the pledge on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time.

“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” he said.

He said his administration would build solar-panel manufacturing plants across the country and train Nigerians to install and maintain solar power systems.

According to him, the proposed solar clusters would supply electricity for basic household needs, generate employment and produce up to 32,000 megawatts.

“You put all of that, and you generate employment, and you now generate up to 32,000 megawatts from these clusters that you do. Then you forget about it. I told them that the way we are going to manage the national grid.

“National grid is a backup. In case a cluster fails, you will power from there,” Adebayo said.

The SDP candidate said the factories could be established through partnerships with countries including China, Turkey and India, with Nigerians trained to operate them.

He said he had previously advised the government on power-related matters and tested solar technology in his hometown, where he claimed to have trained about 2,000 people.

“I did an experiment in my hometown. I have about 2,000 people I trained on solar, because I manufacture the solar panels myself. I do lithium battery.

“The only thing I haven’t got the technological power to do is the inverter. So I buy the inverter. I do the solar battery,” he said.

Adebayo also advocated government investment in strategic sectors, including aviation and manufacturing, arguing that such investments could be made through operating and maintenance contracts instead of leaving the sectors entirely to private operators.

On electricity generation, he said his administration would promote domestic refining and tackle crude oil theft, which he identified as major challenges to energy security and economic growth.

He claimed that up to 900,000 barrels of crude oil were still being stolen, saying the recovery of the oil would improve supply without requiring additional government spending.

Adebayo further said public investment in sectors such as electricity and education could create jobs, as workers employed in those sectors would earn incomes.

As the battle for the 2027 general election intensifies, the Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has raised alarm over an alleged plot to eliminate former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Primate Ayodele, who spoke in a long video shared on his verified X handle on Sunday, said both Obi and Atiku should be conscious of their security henceforth.

The renowned cleric, however, didn’t mention the names of the alleged assailants; he reiterated that they were plotting to assassinate Obi and Atiku, but God would not allow it to happen.

“Obi and Atiku, be very conscious of your security. They are looking for any means to eliminate Obi and Atiku.

Former President Ernest Koroma has returned to Sierra Leonean after more than two years of temporary stay in Nigeria.

He was accompanied yesterday to Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

A statement by the Foreign Affairs Ministry added that Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on the instruction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also followed the ex-President to his country.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who facilitated Koroma’s return in his capacity as special envoy, saw him off to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Koroma served as Sierra Leone’s president from 2007 to 2018 before leaving for Nigeria in January 2024, after being charged with treason and other offences over the November 2023 unrest in the country.

The upheaval, which the Sierra Leonean authorities described as an attempted coup, left 21 people dead and led to the escape of hundreds of prisoners.

Jonathan, who described Koroma’s stay in Nigeria as “home away from home,” expressed gratitude that the country supported him.

He said he had worked with others to encourage dialogue with the Sierra Leonean authorities to create conditions for Koroma’s safe return.

Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement by Magnus Eze, special assistant on Communication and New Media(Office of the Minister), that Koroma’s return to Sierra Leone concludes a regional diplomatic and confidence-building process.

The ministry credited the development to engagements by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that were aimed at promoting peace, stability and political understanding in Sierra Leone.

According to the statement, the process helped create conditions for greater understanding between President Julius Bio and the former president.

“His conduct throughout this period reflected restraint, statesmanship, and commitment to a peaceful outcome,” the statement quoted Odumegwu-Ojukwu as saying.

The minister noted that during his stay in Nigeria, sustained engagements involving ECOWAS, the Nigerian government and other stakeholders contributed to resolving issues that necessitated his relocation.

She expressed appreciation to President Bio, former President Koroma and the people of Sierra Leone for their co-operation and commitment to peace.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigeria remained committed to regional harmony, constitutional order and democratic stability, expressing confidence that Koroma’s return would further strengthen national reconciliation and peace in Sierra Leone.
