Career60% Of Employers Say Graduates Not Job-ready — Report by Kingzjayzee(op): 7:52am On Mar 30
Nearly 60 per cent of employers in Nigeria say graduates are not job-ready, underscoring a widening gap between academic training and industry expectations, a new report has revealed.

This comes as experts urged Nigerian undergraduates to boost their employability by acquiring soft skills and leveraging opportunities both within and beyond the classroom before graduation.

The advice was given on Thursday in Ikeja, Lagos, during the presentation of Proten International’s latest report on the gap between education and industry needs.

The report added that more than 55 per cent of Nigerian graduates work in roles unrelated to their field of study, as it highlighted critical gaps in communication, technical and digital skills.

Findings reveal significant misalignment between academic training and the competencies demanded by modern workplaces, with 55 per cent of respondents working in fields unrelated to their academic background and nearly 60 per cent of employers reporting that graduates are inadequately prepared for their roles.

Critical gaps exist in teamwork, communication, technical proficiency, and digital literacy, while soft skills and practical experience remain highly desired but underdeveloped,” the report read.

Speaking at the industry roundtable themed “Bridging the Skill Gap Between Education and Industry Needs in Nigeria,” the Managing Director of Proten International, Deborah Yemi-Oladayo, described the problem as multidimensional.

It’s not one way. If you redesign the curriculum, it means you are improving it. Then you need to retrain the people who are going to train the students,” she said.

She questioned the level of investment in lecturer development, adding, “How many of our lecturers get enough training? If we’re expecting our lecturers to do much more for our students, we need to give them that level of training so that they will be able to transfer in the classroom.”

Yemi-Oladayo stressed that expecting improved outcomes without equipping educators is unrealistic.

It’s not enough to expect lecturers to do magic. They can only give what they have,” she said.

The MD also advised students not to wait for systemic reforms before taking responsibility for their own development.

“I advise undergraduates to harness opportunities that are around the world. We have online platforms that deliver training for free,” she said, urging them to focus on self-development beyond social media.

She added that students must be intentional about their growth. “They (the students) have a part to play. Nobody will do it for them,” she said.

Also speaking, the founder of Treford Africa, a non-engineering skill partner for professionals and businesses, Harry Enabolo, emphasised the importance of practical experience in preparing for employment.

Experience prepares you for a job faster than almost anything you learn. The best learning still happens on the job,” he said.

Enabolo encouraged students to seek internships and engage with startups, noting that applying knowledge in real-life situations accelerates learning.

One of the best ways of learning is to take all the knowledge you have gained and apply it to something,” he said, adding that early exposure to work environments helps students transition more easily into the labour market.

He further called for a more flexible education system that allows students to combine academic work with practical experience without affecting their performance.

The representatives from government, the private sector, and academia attended the roundtable.

PoliticsNigerians May Seek Third Term For Tinubu – Oluwo by Kingzjayzee(op): 7:36am On Mar 30
The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, on Sunday said many Nigerians might seek a constitutional amendment to allow President Bola Tinubu to remain in office beyond two terms.

The monarch, in a congratulatory message by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Alli, to celebrate Tinubu’s 74th birthday, described the President as a decisive leader who has laid a renewed foundation of hope for the country.

Many Nigerians may beg for a constitutional review for Tinubu to spend more than two terms in office. He is a leader who knows what he is doing,” he said.

Oluwo said the President had distinguished himself through what he described as a firm campaign against illegalities that had stalled the country’s economic growth.

He added that the President’s administrative prowess had driven notable gains, citing improvements in the naira, a rise in foreign reserves from about $1bn to between $49.5bn and $50.45bn as of late February/March 2026, and strengthened economic indices.

The monarch attributed the gains to structural reforms, including exchange rate unification, increased oil output and higher foreign investment inflows.

Oluwo also commended Tinubu for granting local government autonomy, increasing allocations to states, expanding road infrastructure and improving palliative distribution at the grassroots.

According to him, past leaders attempted similar economic reforms but were overwhelmed by public and political pressure.

He said only a capable leader could implement tough but necessary decisions to reposition the economy.

‎Oluwo added that the President’s policies had begun to impact the standard of living, noting that the next phase would be stability.

‎He said, “You are not yet a capable leader until you make decisions and stand by them. Many past presidents attempted to remove obstacles to economic prosperity but were overrun by public outcries. Tinubu has demonstrated uncommon leadership through reforms.

‎“Nigeria’s foreign reserves have increased to over $49.5bn from about $1bn. Local government autonomy is taking effect, states earn more, and road projects, including Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and Sokoto-Badagry, are ongoing.”

BusinessLate Herbert Wigwe Linked To 106 London Properties — Report by Kingzjayzee(op): 1:13pm On Mar 28
Late Nigerian banker, Herbert Wigwe, has been linked to the ownership of 106 properties in London, placing him seventh among billionaire real‑estate holders in the British capital, according to a report by The Londoner.

The investigation — titled Revealed: The billionaires who really own London uncovered some 32,611 overseas‑owned properties across the city after a recent change in UK law required foreign entities to disclose their beneficial owners.

The report found that these disclosures allowed researchers to connect previously hidden owners to prime real estate in London, including several high‑profile streets and commercial locations.

But now, The Londoner can reveal that some 32,611 properties in London are owned by overseas entities. We can do this because a recent change in the law is forcing these foreign companies to register their real owners.

We’ve spent the last week, using data compiled and shared with us by Dan Neidle of Tax Policy Associates, to go through thousands of those overseas entities to see who has bought up properties in the capital,” the report stated.

The Londoner report identifies 32,611 London properties owned by overseas entities. These include famous streets like Oxford Street, Canary Wharf and Greenwich Peninsula.

Wigwe, who died in a helicopter crash in the United States in February 2024 along with his wife, son and former NGX Group chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo, was ranked seventh on the list of billionaires with the most London properties.

Prior to his death, Wigwe served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions.

Since his passing, his family has been involved in litigation over his estate.

The Londoner’s findings show that a significant number of London’s most expensive buildings are owned through companies based in jurisdictions such as Jersey, where ownership details were previously opaque.

The database used by the publication was compiled from newly released disclosures by overseas owners.

The report also identified other wealthy individuals and entities whose property portfolios in London are held through overseas companies, highlighting the scale of foreign investment in the city’s real‑estate market.

Details in the investigation included ownership structures that were not previously publicly available.

Career₦250K Salary: Nigerian Man Questions Survival Reality by Kingzjayzee(op): 11:44am On Mar 28
A Nigerian man has ignited widespread conversation after revealing the sobering truth behind his monthly finances.

The young professional, earning a salary of ₦250,000, took to social media to break down his expenses and what he shared struck a nerve with thousands.

According to his post, his annual rent alone stands at a staggering ₦1.1 million. When broken down monthly, that’s already a significant chunk of his income accounted for. Add to that an estimated ₦75,000 spent on transportation, and the financial pressure begins to paint a clearer picture.

What remains, he explains, is barely enough to cover essential living costs—feeding, electricity, internet subscriptions, clothing, fuel, and the ever-unpredictable emergencies life throws his way.

How is a 30-year-old man supposed to think of starting a family or even owning a car under these conditions?” he questioned.

This conversation reflects a broader reality facing many young Nigerians today: the increasing difficulty of achieving traditional milestones—renting a decent apartment, owning a car, or starting a family—despite being employed.

While salaries for many remain relatively stagnant, living expenses continue to climb, creating a silent pressure that is now finding its voice online.

And as the conversation grows louder, one question lingers:

Is it a matter of better financial planning or a system simply becoming too expensive to keep up with?

PoliticsKwankwaso Set To Join ADC Wednesday - The Whistler by Kingzjayzee(op): 7:48pm On Mar 24
Strong indications emerged on Tuesday that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, may formally obtain his membership card of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday.

Sources within the ADC leadership disclosed that Kwankwaso is expected to register as a member of the opposition party in his hometown, Kwankwaso, located in Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State.

Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, has in recent weeks hosted key figures of the ADC at his Kano residence, fuelling speculation about his imminent defection.

Among those who visited him recently is the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party Nigeria, Peter Obi.

Also, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, met with Kwankwaso amid growing claims that he is considering a move to the ADC.

Makinde ia leading figure in a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party Nigeria (PDP), led by Kabiru Turaki, SAN.

The faction remains locked in a protracted leadership dispute with another camp aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Both camps continue to lay claim to the leadership of the PDP, with reconciliation efforts yet to yield any meaningful outcome.

Meanwhile, the ADC leadership on Tuesday, received a report of its constitution review committee.

The report was received by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Prof Oserheimen Osunbor, on behalf of the ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark.

In a speech by Mark, which was read on his behalf by Osunbor, the party said the task of reviewing the constitution must reflect the realities of the time.

The chairman added that the constitution must also meet the expectations of ADC members, and the urgent need to strengthen internal democracy, transparency, and accountability.

I am particularly encouraged that this review process involved wide consultations across the states, zones, and critical stakeholders of our party.

This inclusive approach reinforces our belief that the ADC belongs to all its members, irrespective of status or position.

As we receive this report today, let me assure you that the National Working Committee will carefully study its recommendations with utmost seriousness,” Mark said.

CrimeMan Crashes Car, Kills Woman In Brutal Attack, Laughs At Footage by Kingzjayzee(op): 5:03pm On Mar 24
A U.K. man was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of the 2025 murder of a woman he violently attacked after crashing a car.

Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, 24, was found guilty of the murder of Nila Patel, 56, on Monday, March 23 after previously pleading guilty to dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply drugs and assaulting an emergency worker, Leicestershire Police said in a news release.

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred in June 2024, during which police said Ahanonu was driving a car in Leicester, briefly collided with a curb in front of a bus stop and then continued driving, eventually on the wrong side of the road before crashing and overturning the vehicle.

"As people gathered round the vehicle, opening the door to try and help Ahanonu, the defendant managed to get himself free from the vehicle and ran along the road at the side of the hospital," Leicestershire police said.

Police said Patel had been on a bus on the road where Ahanonu crashed and that she got off and began walking home.

"It was a short distance later that the defendant was then seen to violently attack Ms Patel who fell to the ground," police said. "Witnesses reported Ahanonu punching, kicking and stamping on Ms Patel."

Ahanonu did not know Patel prior to what appeared to be a random attack, authorities said.

Investigators determined that Ahanonu had been under the influence of cannabis at the time and that his car contained dealer bags of the drug.

Leicestershire police released footage of Ahanonu's interview with detectives following his arrest. In it, he is shown surveillance video of his driving and appeared to be in disbelief, saying that he couldn't remember any of it.

At one point, Ahanonu briefly laughs and says, "If I don't laugh, I cry, I'm in so much pain right now."

Detectives then showed Ahanonu video of the attack on Patel and he pleaded, seemingly through tears, that he couldn't remember and asked to see the footage again.

"I don't remember killing her," he said. "I need to see it."

Patel suffered a fractured skull and a brain injury as a result of the attack and died in the hospital two days later.

Police said Patel's family described her as a "beautiful, vibrant soul."

Ahanonu was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 21 years and six months.

"Ahanonu was unknown to Ms Patel," Detective Inspector Emma Matts said in a statement. "This was the most horrific, violent and random attack by a stranger on a kind, gentle and loving woman who was simply making her way home."

PoliticsNigeria, UK Sign Deal For Deportation Of Failed Asylum Seekers, Offenders by Kingzjayzee(op): 7:11am On Mar 20
Nigeria has entered into a fresh agreement with the United Kingdom that will enable British authorities to repatriate thousands of failed asylum seekers and convicted offenders to the West African nation.

The deal was formalised by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood during President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to Britain, according to a statement released by the Home Office on Thursday.

Tinubu’s visit lasted two days, covering Wednesday and Thursday.

As part of the arrangement, the UK will also be able to return individuals who have overstayed their visas, with the framework offering broad operational flexibility to British authorities.

A key provision of the agreement is Nigeria’s acceptance, for the first time, of UK-issued letters as valid identification for deportees without passports. These documents serve as alternative proof of identity for individuals who lack proper travel papers and are used to facilitate their return.

Previously, Nigeria relied on emergency travel certificates as supporting identification for undocumented travellers.

The Home Office noted that Nigeria’s decision to recognise UK letters removes a significant bureaucratic barrier that has historically delayed deportations.

Details such as the commencement date and duration of the agreement have not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the deal includes any financial arrangement.

In 2022, Britain signed a comparable agreement with Rwanda, committing at least £370 million to relocate asylum seekers. However, that plan collapsed after Prime Minister Keir Starmer described it as “dead”.

It is also yet to be confirmed whether the deportation arrangement will apply exclusively to Nigerian nationals or extend to individuals of other nationalities.

According to reports, there are currently 961 Nigerian failed asylum seekers in the UK who have exhausted all legal appeals.

Additionally, the Home Office is awaiting the deportation of 1,110 Nigerian nationals convicted of crimes.

With the new agreement in place, both categories are expected to face quicker removal.

Tunji-Ojo said Nigeria’s signatory to the deal shows that “we are totally committed to being a responsible country in fulfilling our core obligations”.

And for us to sustain that relationship, we must remember: ‘He who comes to equity must come with clean hands.’ So, we need to be as open and as fair as possible,” the minister said.

Alex Norris, the UK minister for border security and asylum, described Nigeria as a crucial partner in addressing irregular migration, noting its status as the UK’s largest visa market in Africa.

We owe everyone across the system fairness,” Norris said, adding that “anyone who abuses our systems, breaks our laws or tries to cheat their way into Britain will be stopped and removed”.

The Home Office further disclosed that both countries have agreed to deepen cooperation through joint enforcement operations and intelligence sharing aimed at dismantling criminal networks exploiting visa pathways.

The agreement follows a series of notable cases involving fraudulent job sponsorships, sham marriages, and falsified financial and employment documentation.

Nigeria is also expected to review its legal framework on immigration-related offences, with the aim of imposing stricter penalties on offenders.

In addition, a new collaborative initiative will target online fraudsters engaged in romance scams, investment fraud, and cryptocurrency-related crimes, enhancing protection for UK residents.

The initiative, described as a “fusion cell” model, will unite government agencies, financial institutions, technology firms, and telecom companies to share intelligence swiftly and respond more effectively to evolving criminal methods.

Foreign AffairsUs-iran War: "We Don't Need Anybody" - Donald Trump by Kingzjayzee(op): 10:42am On Mar 17
A day after US President Donald Trump called on his allies to help reopen the war-hit Strait of Hormuz and was met with silence or outright rejection, he said that Washington did not need any assistance to secure the strategic waterway.

We don’t need anybody. We’re the strongest nation in the world. We have the strongest military by far in the world,” Trump said, repeating his criticism that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) members won’t help the US, despite their joining the coalition, and the idea of collective defence.

The narrow waterway is a crucial global energy corridor, carrying roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil from the Gulf to international markets.

Many US partners, including Germany, Spain and Italy, said they had no immediate plans to send ships to help reopen the strategic waterway, which Iran has effectively shut with drones and naval mines.

"We lack the mandate from the United Nations, the European Union or NATO required under the Basic Law," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in Berlin, adding that Washington and Israel had not consulted Germany before launching the war.

Trump, speaking at a White House event in Washington, said many countries had told him they were prepared to help, but voiced frustration with some long‑standing allies.

"Some are very enthusiastic about it, and some aren't," he said, without offering specifics. "Some are countries that we've helped for many, many years. We've protected them from horrible outside sources, and they weren't that enthusiastic. And the level of enthusiasm matters to me."

Amid the escalating tensions, Tehran took steps to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route through which nearly 20 per cent of the world's oil supply passes. Iran attacked more than 15 vessels attempting to transit this waterway. The new Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, announced that the strait would remain closed, while the Iranian military warned that crude oil prices could surge to as high as USD 200 per barrel.

Trump has repeatedly stated that he would deploy the US Navy to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and urged allied nations to provide naval support. However, most allies declined this request, reflecting significant divisions over involvement in the ongoing conflict.
