A Kaduna man has publicly accused prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of meddling in his marriage and obstructing security agencies from investigating what he described as the disappearance of his Moroccan wife. Nasiru Musa Idris made the allegations in an interview with RFI Hausa, saying his wife has been in Gumi's custody for roughly 11 months. He described the situation as deeply unjust and called on the cleric to respond to a police invitation so the matter could be properly investigated. HOW THE DISPUTE BEGAN Idris said he first met Gumi at a pharmacy on Isa Kaita Road in Kaduna, where he had gone with his family. He later introduced his wife to the cleric. According to Idris, the woman had no prior connections in Nigeria before he brought her into the country, having travelled to Morocco specifically to seek her hand in marriage. He said the union was contracted with the full consent of her parents and with documentation from the Nigerian embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. [I]The trouble, he said, started when Gumi reportedly insisted that he obtain an additional marriage certificate from a Sharia Court, despite the existing paperwork from Morocco and Nigeria, including a police character report[/i] Idris said he subsequently took his wife to the cleric at Gumi's own request, after Gumi suggested she needed counselling given her young age. He alleges that from that point, the cleric began pushing for the separation of the marriage and worked to prevent any security agency from looking into her whereabouts. Idris also challenged claims that the woman's mother had travelled to Nigeria and taken her away, saying he personally processed the mother's travel documents to facilitate her visit. GUMI DENIES THE CLAIMS Speaking to Weekend Trust, Gumi denied the allegations and said he intended to sue Idris for defamation. Malam Nasiru Ayuba, known as Dan Agaji, who serves as chairman of the Volunteers of Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna and as Gumi's personal assistant on special assignment, also rejected the allegation that the cleric was keeping the woman in his home. He said the Moroccan woman had approached Gumi on her own initiative to seek help with a personal problem, and that Gumi stepped in after she indicated she had nowhere else to turn. Ayuba said Gumi's supporters should remain calm while the matter was being resolved, adding that the cleric had been unfairly targeted on social media. Minister of Defence Christopher Musa has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of deliberately planning the killing of people in Southern Kaduna. Musa made the allegation while fielding questions on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday. The minister said El-Rufai’s administration created deep divisions in Kaduna State, alleging that the situation made it difficult for residents from Southern Kaduna to live freely in the northern part of the state and vice versa. According to him, the administration of the current governor, Uba Sani, has made deliberate efforts to restore unity and rebuild trust among residents of the state. “We know how it was when El-Rufai was there; it was toxic ,” Musa said. “El-Rufai did a lot of terrible things in Kaduna State. He divided the country, the state, into two. In that, if you are from the south, you cannot go to the north to live. Those ones from the north were moving to the south. “Governor Sani within one year has been able to dissolve all that. You see, now everybody is free, everybody has a say. It’s not 100%. Let me tell you, it’s not 100%, but you can see that he’s making deliberate effort in uniting the state.” Speaking on the feelings of people in Southern Kaduna towards the former governor, Musa said the people remained deeply pained over killings recorded in the area during El-Rufai’s tenure. He alleged that El-Rufai deliberately planned the killing of people in the region. “Well, I don’t know if unhappy is an issue. I think if there’s anything worse than unhappy, we can never be happy with somebody who has deliberately planned for the killing of our people,” Musa said. “I mean, when you look at it, if you look at his videos, you know, his speeches, he was very proud of what he did. “He told us he paid bandits. He told us he did this, he did that. He didn’t hide it. He was that arrogant to come out and tell people that this was what he did.” The Defence Minister said residents of Southern Kaduna were still traumatised by the killings that occurred during the period, adding that the security situation in the area had improved under the current administration. “The Southern Kaduna people are still very pained. Of course, definitely. I mean, if you look at the number of killings that was done there and what is going on now, you can’t compare at all,” he said. Musa further accused El-Rufai of denying some people opportunities during his administration and alleged that the former governor’s policies affected even people from his own part of the state. “I can tell you what he has done to people living in Kaduna from his own area. He did a lot of things that I’m sure even him is not proud of,” he added. The minister, however, called on Nigerians to reject politicians who exploit religion, ethnicity and other differences to divide the country. “We should get politicians that want to unite Nigeria. For me, any individual who is using either religion, tribe, creed, or anything to divide the state can never be a friend; can never be somebody we look up to,” Musa said. “We shouldn’t have those kind of ones in government. Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has sparked debate with his views on the changing ethnic influence within Nigeria’s film industry, arguing that the Yoruba community has become more dominant because of its ability to organise and promote its own. In a recent interview on Gbam, aired on the Yan Content Factory YouTube channel on Friday, Duru acknowledged the contributions of Yoruba pioneers such as Herbert Ogunde to Nigerian theatre and performance arts in the 1950s. However, he argued that the modern Nollywood home-video industry was largely driven by Igbo entrepreneurs during the 1990s and early 2000s. According to the actor, Igbo traders played a major role in developing the home-video market that eventually evolved into the Nollywood industry known globally today. Duru argued that the Yoruba community was more effective at pooling resources, creating opportunities for its members and protecting its cultural interests. “The Yorubas epitomise the saying, ‘Charity begins at home.’ We need to learn from them. If you don’t protect and project your own, who will do it?” he said. He also cited streaming platforms such as Netflix as evidence of what he described as the decline in the visibility of Igbo stories within Nollywood. “We [Igbos] created Nollywood, but if you go to Netflix today, you hardly see one movie that speaks of Igbo heritage. But the Yorubas, on the other hand, created opportunities for themselves and utilised them,” Duru stated. The actor blamed what he described as an individualistic mindset among some Igbos for the loss of influence. “Igbos failed to learn because of their individualistic mentality. You think you are the big man, so you are self-centred. But you forget that a time will come when you need to be expansive,” he said. Duru further expressed concern that Igbo history and culture are increasingly being portrayed by filmmakers from outside the community. “We have great writers who are now writing for the Yorubas. You even see the Yorubas crossing over to write Igbo stories like Ahamefuna and making a mess of who we are,” he said. Despite his criticism, Duru said his comments should not be interpreted as an attack on Yoruba filmmakers. Instead, he urged Igbos to learn from how the Yoruba community has promoted its own people and culture. “Don’t get angry with them. These are people who saw their own and protected their own. What happened to you?” he asked. He also questioned why more films had not been made about prominent Igbo figures and historical personalities. “Igbos have many great men in Nigeria. When was the last time you saw the epic of one of these great men?” Duru asked. Russian chess official, Sergei Indeikin has died at the age of 36 after reportedly developing a severe form of malaria following a work trip to Nigeria. Indeikin, who served as an operational manager and delegate of the International Chess Federation, FIDE, travelled to Abuja earlier in August for the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. Russian media, including Argumenty i Fakty (AIF) and Lenta.ru, reported that relatives and colleagues attributed the infection to his trip to Nigeria. AIF, citing his father, Alexander, reported on August 24 that “shortly before his death, his son was on a business trip to Abuja, Nigeria. He then travelled to Uzbekistan, where he began to feel ill.” According to the report, Indeikin’s father said the symptoms described to him by his son’s FIDE colleagues indicated malaria. “He travelled from Uzbekistan to Moscow, but didn’t stay in the capital, where his father lives, instead heading to Perm to join his mother. However, his condition worsened there. An ambulance was called for him, and he was hospitalised, but his condition could not be saved,” the report said. AIF also quoted Alexander, saying, “His son was vaccinated before his trip to Nigeria, flying to Moscow from Pyatigorsk, where he lives permanently, specifically for the purpose. His son said that the vaccine could mitigate the risk, but it doesn’t guarantee 100% protection.” FIDE’s coverage of the competition confirmed Indeikin’s presence in Abuja, where he was listed among the officials involved in the tournament. The championship was held from August 1 to 8. FIDE announced Indeikin’s death on August 23 on its X handle, describing it as the result of a “sudden illness” without publicly identifying the specific medical condition. Its obituary read, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague Sergei Indeikin, FIDE Operational Manager, following a sudden illness.” Meanwhile, Russian business newspaper Izvestia reported that Indeikin’s mother, Tatiana, told the publication on August 24 that the cause of death was a severe form of malaria. According to her, Sergei contracted the disease while working and his condition deteriorated rapidly over two weeks. “He had already arrived. And he arrived in Perm. He was admitted to the hospital, it was too late. He had a very rapid-onset illness. The most severe form,” she was quoted as saying. AIF also quoted medical expert Professor Alexander Lukashev as explaining that malaria can be transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito in Nigeria and other tropical regions. Other Russian media organisations, including Lenta.ru, reported that Indeikin was bitten by a mosquito while attending the chess tournament in Nigeria and that the bite was suspected to have transmitted the malaria parasite. Indeikin had been involved in FIDE events since 2021 and played a role in organising several major international competitions, including World Championship matches, World Cups, Candidates Tournaments, and World Rapid and Blitz Championships. FIDE described him as an important member of its operations team who travelled extensively to help ensure that major chess events were successfully organised. He is survived by his wife and daughter. However, while Indeikin’s family and several Russian media reports have linked his illness to severe malaria allegedly contracted during his trip to Nigeria, FIDE has officially attributed his death only to a sudden illness and has not independently confirmed malaria as the medical cause of death. Samsung Electronics was ordered to pay Swatch Group US$11.6 million (S$14.75 million) for failing to prevent apps that mimicked the Swiss company’s luxury brands such as Breguet, Longines and Omega on its own smartwatch displays. The High Court’s trademark ruling, published Aug 26, came after the Swiss watchmaker sought about US$170 million from the Korean technology giant for displaying the Swatch brands. Samsung argued at trial that the damages weren’t worth more than about $300. “Use of the Swatch Group brands on Samsung’s supermarket shelves, downloadable for nothing or for little money, is to my mind very damaging,” Judge Marcus Smith said in the ruling. “The low price is demeaning of the brands the Swatch Group seek to promulgat[/b]e.” A previous judgment found Samsung had infringed the Swiss watchmaker’s trademarks by allowing designs that replicated the appearance of Swatch Group watches for digital watch displays on its app store between 2015 and 2019. “We are carefully considering the High Court’s judgment and will consider all possible countermeasures, including an appeal,” a Samsung spokesperson said. Swatch Group carefully curated and promoted its brands over decades, which formed a critical part of their business, the judge said. “[b]It is quite clear that Samsung does not value the marks as such, and considers that they make no real marginal difference to its offering to consumers,” Smith said. The judge assessed the damages at US$11.6 million after factoring in royalties on about 160,000 downloads of the infringing watch-face apps in Europe. “Samsung repeatedly attempted to downplay the scale and significance of the infringements by trivialising the compensation owed to the Swatch Group’s well-known brands,” a Swatch Group spokesperson said. Veteran Nollywood actor, Yinka Quadri, wept bitterly at the burial of his colleague, Taiwo Hassan, who is popularly known as Ogogo. Ogogo was not just a colleague, but Quadri’s best friend in the Yoruba movie industry. The actor was laid to rest according to Islamic rites in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday. Ogogo died on Sunday at the age of 66, after battling with stage 4 cancer. His burial was attended by family, friends and colleagues, who showed up to pay their last respects.
