Enugu State Government Presents Staff of Office to Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna

........ As He Takes the Traditional Oath of Office as the Akajiofo of Ntu-egbenese Clan

The Traditional Ruler of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom, in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Friday, received the staff of office as the traditional ruler of the community.

Presenting the staff of office to the new monarch on behalf of the State Government at an event held at the Ogugu Central School Field, Amanabor, the State Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, said the staff presentation marks the beginning of his leadership era.

He stated that Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr has all it takes to take Ogugu forward, owing to his track records of community development initiatives and programmes; adding that, with the support provided by the community so far since he emerged as the Igwe-elect, his leadership will bring development to the community.

Deacon Ogbodo also enjoined the new traditional ruler to always be law-abiding and act on the principles of law that brought him to office, as he is not just a leader but also the eye of the State Government.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Awgu Council of Traditional Rulers and also the traditional ruler of Ezinesi Mmaku, His Royal Highness, Igwe Mmadụabuchi Nevobasi, congratulated Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna, whom he described as a brother and childhood friend.

He stated that his emergence as the traditional ruler of the community wasn't a surprise to him, as he has always been a man of the people and a community leader; adding that his reign will bring back peace and usher in disruptive development to the community.

Igwe Nevobasi also thanked Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his vision and commitment to rural development, as well as dedication to the welfare of the people.

In his remarks, the new monarch, Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna, thanked God for His mercy, kindness, and love. He stated that his leadership will be a service to the community and humanity.

He thanked Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State for always having the welfare of the people in mind while also urging all the over 32 communities in Ntu-egbenese clan to unite and champion a good cause for their development.

Earlier, Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr was taken to Nkwo-Ogugu where he took the traditional oath of office as the 2nd traditional ruler of the community and also the leader of Ntu-egbenese clan.

Administering the traditional oath of office, the eldest man in Umuokpara Ogbodu Ezioha Community, which is the eldest village in the entire community and Ntu-egbenese clan, High Chief George Okolie, urged Igwe Ogbonna to lead with the fear of God and work towards the promotion of the values of Ntu-egbenese clan, before presenting the Ọfọ Ntu-egbenese to the new monarch.

Following the presentation, Chief Okolie further charged the new Igwe to see himself as a bridge between the ancestors and the present generation, emphasizing that leadership in Ntu-egbenese goes beyond titles and influence but rests heavily on sacrificial service, fairness, and a deep commitment to the collective interest of the people.

According to Chief Okolie, "This Ọfọ that I am giving to you on behalf of Ogugu and entire ntuegbenese clan is not just a staff; it is the voice of our fathers. It demands that you must never lie, never oppress, and never forget that your power is for the service of the people, not for personal pride."

Hon Atu Calls for the Recognition of Sacrifices by Mothers as Churches Celebrate Mothering Sunday

The member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, has called on Nigerians to recognise the unflinching sacrifices mothers make on a daily basis.

Hon. Atu made the call on Sunday in Enugu through a message published on his social media platforms in commemoration of this year's Mothering Sunday.

He stated that mothers in every culture play very critical roles in shaping and molding the character of children, adding that their roles have been critical in both procreation and societal sustenance.

According to him, "No society can make any meaningful progress if mothers don't make the kind of sacrifices they make. In fact, anybody can give birth, but not everyone can be a responsible mother."

He urged families to recognise the indispensable roles of mothers always, while also striving toward ending domestic violence against them.

Hon. Atu also insisted that mothers should be given a very special place in governance and culture.

"We must always accord mothers their respect because their roles in both family and society at large are indispensable. Their contributions go beyond nurturing children; they shape the moral fabric of our communities and drive societal progress."

"Relocation of Coal Camp Market by Governor Mbah, a Game Changer for Trade and Investment in Enugu State" – Powell Homes and Shelters MD

... Calls on investors to take advantage of the opportunity and invest in Pine Crest Estate, which is being sold by the company near the market.

The Managing Director of Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd, Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi Emmanuel, says Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s relocation of Coal Camp Spare Parts Market to a purpose-built international market is a bold and visionary step toward economic transformation in Enugu State. He described the initiative as a strategic move that would enhance trade, improve infrastructure, and create a more organized business environment for traders.

Speaking with newsmen in Enugu on Monday , Architect Emmanuel noted that the decision to relocate the traders to a modern market, fully equipped with essential amenities, aligns with global best practices in urban planning and commercial development.

According to him, “Governor Mbah has demonstrated exceptional leadership by ensuring that traders operate in a safe, structured, and well-planned environment. This is a major achievement in the drive to position Enugu as a thriving economic hub, as the move has been long overdue.”

He commended the governor for keeping his campaign promises, emphasizing that previous administrations had made similar commitments without fulfilling them. “For decades, these traders have been promised relocation to a world-class facility, but nothing was done. Governor Mbah’s decision to deliver on this promise within two years in office speaks volumes about his dedication to genuine development.”

Highlighting the economic impact of the new international market, the Powell Homes and Shelters MD pointed out that the location along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway strategically positions the market as a major commercial gateway.

“This market is designed not just for Enugu traders but as a central hub that will attract businesses from across Nigeria and beyond. It is a game-changer that will boost trade, investment, industrialization, and urbanization.”

Architect Emmanuel also praised the governor for incorporating residential areas within the market’s master plan, ensuring that traders do not have to commute long distances to their businesses.

“The integration of living spaces, schools, healthcare facilities, security posts, and recreational centers is commendable. It fosters a self-sufficient business community where traders can work and live in comfort. We, as a company, also have land that is over a thousand plots, which we are selling just close to the market. This was only possible for us to acquire because the governor designed the market to be like that. Our estate near the market offers everything that a modern estate should have.”

He acknowledged the significant improvement in infrastructure under Governor Mbah’s administration, particularly in the opening of access roads, provision of water, power supply, and the establishment of essential services such as fire stations and clinics.

“This initiative reflects a clear vision for sustainable development. It is not just about relocation; it is about creating an enabling environment where businesses can thrive.”

Architect Emmanuel urged traders and stakeholders to embrace the relocation and support the government’s efforts in making Enugu a model of modern commerce.

“With this kind of infrastructure, the possibilities are limitless. This is an opportunity for traders to own their shops, build wealth, and contribute to the state’s economic growth. Governor Mbah has set a new standard, and we must all key into this vision.”

Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to supporting infrastructural projects that drive economic growth and enhance urban development while also expressing optimism that the relocation of Coal Camp traders to the international market would mark the beginning of a new era of prosperity for Enugu’s commercial sector.

Inside Mburubu: The Truth About Our Traditional Leadership Crises and What We Must Do to Bring Peace

An elder statesman from Mburubu Community and a stakeholder, Mr. Edwin Ezeh, has countered the lies told by one Chief Simon Aniobi over the Mburubu traditional leadership tussle.

Mr. Anobi, through media publications made on March 6, 2025, entitled "Enugu: FACTS BEHIND MBURUBU IGWESHIP TUSSLE," told what many see as selfish-induced lies against his community.

Mr. Ezeh, in a letter sent to newsmen in Enugu on Monday, deflated all the lies and called for all parties to withdraw their court cases, go to the field, and test their popularity among the people.

According to him, Mburubu Community Igweship started in 1976 when the community chose their late Igwe, HRH E.M.O. Ezeh. Before his coronation, the community gathered and called him to lead them because of his love and contributions to their growth. Prior to his emergence, Mburubu had chiefs who represented them, such as Chief Chukwu Anyiene from Obinagu, another from Uhuagu, and others before him. The late E.M.O. Ezeh hailed from Umudara.

In line with the military regime's directive, Mburubu Community agreed to have an Igwe, and they crowned him in April 1976. Around July 1976, the government of the day, led by Col. Arthur Mkpere, gave him a certificate of recognition and a staff of office. During his coronation at Umudara village square, the late Igwe asked Ndi Mburubu if he could be succeeded by his son whenever his reign came to an end. The community said, "No," stating that his Igweship was a result of his good deeds to them. Thus, his successor would come from any other village except Umudara and must be someone accepted by the majority of Ndi Mburubu. That was the origin of the rotation system, which means the Igwe would come from a village that was not that of the late Igwe and must be elected by the majority. This agreement was signed by the late Igwe and other stakeholders in the community as a constitution for Igweship selection, also known as "The 1976 Mburubu Autonomous Community Constitution," which is gazetted with the Enugu State Government.

At that time, despite the late Igwe being the majority's choice, the late Anthony Nweke Chukwu from Uhuagu village and another man from Umudara contested against him. However, the late Igwe E.M.O. Ezeh was not selected based on the seniority of his village, Umudara, but on his popularity and good deeds to the community. In 1976, Uhuegbe village was recognized as the eldest village in Mburubu and received every accolade associated with that status. However, in 1977, a man from Umudara village named the late Ogbede Nwaonyeabor took an oath and swore that Uhuegbe village was not the eldest in Mburubu, but rather Umudara. He argued that Umudara village had settled in Mburubu before Uhuegbe, as Mburubu people were made up of different settlers from different areas. The villages did not originate from one place.

In Igbo tradition, when someone takes an oath or swears before a deity over something, they are given one year to die or stay alive. If they survive, the other party is expected to purify them through ị́gwa ehụ (traditional purification). However, Uhuegbe village refused to perform the purification after that period, which was in 1978. It was Umudara village that later carried it out and claimed the position of the eldest village in 1978. This means that Uhuegbe village still contests the seniority issue to this day.

Moreover, no other village has taken any action to establish who comes next in seniority after Umudara, which means there is no known or verifiable order of seniority documented. It is now clear to everyone that the late Igwe was not elected based on village seniority.

The 2003 Mburubu Town Union Constitution

Before 2003, many people had led Mburubu unions since 1970 after the war under the name Mburubu Progressive Union (MPU), which independently ran the affairs of the union. It had leaders like Chief Nweke Onovo, Chief Sylvanus Njoku, and the late Chief Emmanuel Ezechukwu, with their union constitution at that time.

In 1993, a team of intellectuals from our community, led by Engr. Dr. D.C. Chukwu, came together to advocate for the establishment of a proper constitution to guide the union, which they did perfectly. In that constitution, there was nothing linking the town union’s regulatory system with that of the traditional leadership. We had other Town Union Presidents like Chief Boniface Ogbede, the late Patrick Ifediora, and Mr. Livinus Edeh, who led well with the 1993 constitution.

It was with the emergence of Chief Simon Anobi as a factional Town Union President and Chief Boniface Ogbede as another factional President in July 2003 that a crisis arose. This prompted the inauguration of Chief Simon Anobi and his faction in August 2003. He then set up a committee led by his then-leader, the late Mr. Aniebonam Igbudu. Along with his factional executives, they wrote a new constitution for the town union as an administrative organ in the community, claiming there was no other constitution for the town union.

No member of the Igwe's cabinet was involved, no Igwe's representative participated, and there was no discussion on the traditional institution during the drafting of the constitution, as stated by the then-factional treasurer. This was because they knew fully well that the traditional stool is a larger institution with well-defined rules. The former treasurer also opined that the late Aniebonam Igbudu managed to smuggle several items into that factional constitution without their knowledge, likely due to his selfish personal interest. In the 2003 Mburubu Town Union Constitution, Mr. Simon Aniobi elongated his tenure from three years to five years.

They made our Ìgwe the Board of Trustees Chairman and patron of the town union, which warranted his signatory to the constitution. However, our village chairmen, as well as other town unions, refused to sign it, and it was later rejected by the whole village. Chief Aniobi and his cohorts later used their colleagues to sign for them. This constitution was rejected by the community because it was created by a factional executive.

On January 4, 2004, the community came together at Obodo Uhuegbe Village Square to resolve the town union issue. They agreed that everything done by either of the factional Town Union Presidents be null and void as stakeholders preached for peace. They ordered that a confirmatory election be held, where all male members of the community, 18 years and above, would vote to select the Town Union President between Chief Simon Aniobi and Chief Boniface Ogbede. Whoever won would continue with his executives. Based on the aforementioned, votes were cast, and Chief Simon Aniobi won, bringing peace to the community. It should be noted that the 2003 town union constitution was drafted and signed between August and December 2003, but it was thrown out by the community, and a confirmation election was conducted by the people of Mburubu—not by delegates.

Town Union Elections

These cabals at the time became so powerful in Mburubu that they always had their way, disregarding the majority opinion in the community. They had no challenger due to their economic power and connections, making it difficult for them to respect the manipulations they inserted into their so-called 2003 town union constitution, especially concerning the zoning of executive positions within the union.

It was Prince Engr. Lawrence Ezeh and Chief Simon Aniobi who always imposed their choices against the will of the villagers. They brought in the late Mr. Celestine Chukwu from Uhuagu Village and imposed him on the community, even when his own people rejected him. Because there was no force to challenge them, they had their way. However, as fate and justice would have it, they had serious issues with the late Celestine Chukwu and his executives due to the amendments they suggested in the 2003 town union constitution, which was already due for revision.

The late Chukwu, having fallen out with his cabal leaders, decided to set up a constitutional amendment committee. He selected men of wisdom from villages and branches, and the late Igwe nominated a representative. The 2013 amendment of the constitution was completed, but Prince Ezeh Lawrence became angry when he saw that the power of constituting the town union election screening committee was removed from his father, the Igwe, as stated in the 2003 constitution as amended in 2013. He then went to court to challenge the amendment process. Since the late Chukwu and the community had limited resources to pursue the case, it remained dormant in Agbani High Court from 2013.

After the expiration of the late Chukwu's tenure, Prince Lawrence Ezeh, through the power of the town union election committee, zoned the presidency to Uhuegbe Village in favor of Ọzọ Kenneth Igbudu. However, Chief Simon Aniobi opposed Ọzọ Kenneth Igbudu’s candidacy, arguing that he was a cousin to the late Celestine Chukwu, who had issues with them during his tenure, and that Ọzọ Kenneth Igbudu was from the Ifediora lineage. To him, nobody from the Ifediora lineage would ever lead Mburubu again. Chief Simon Aniobi then convinced Prince Lawrence Ezeh to support his choice candidate, Chief Cornelius Okolie, and the two agreed.

Against their choice, the people of Uhuegbe unanimously selected Mr. Calistus Chukwu, who was next in line after Ọzọ Kenneth Igbudu. However, the cabals rejected this and imposed their own choice on the community as the town union president, along with other executives.

After the expiration of his tenure, Prince Lawrence Ezeh, in his selfish interest, zoned the presidency of the town union to Obinagu Village to favor his personal driver, Hon. Emmanuel Edeh. The people of Obinagu, unhappy with this, rejected Hon. Emmanuel Edeh, conducted their internal election, and chose Ọzọ Sylvanus Chukwudi, popularly known as Morgodor. This led to tension in Mburubu. Obinagu village leaders then called Morgodor and Hon. Edeh together, conducted an election between them, and Morgodor won with over 50 votes against Hon. Edeh’s 3 votes.

However, Prince Engr. Lawrence Ezeh rejected the village’s choice and imposed Hon. Edeh on the community. He is currently serving as the town union president, despite the principles of equity, fairness, and natural justice.

Engr. Dr. Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe Was Chosen as the Igwe-elect of Mburubu

After the death of our late Igwe in December 2021 and his burial in April 2022, Mburubu people mourned him for over a year. We (Mburubu people) decided that we wouldn't continue without an Igwe, who is the traditional head of the community, and called for a meeting of all Mburubu people through the Mburubu General Assembly and the late Igwe's cabinet leaders. The meeting was held at Obodo Uhuegbe village square. The aim was to determine who the cap fits because there was no Traditional Prime Minister (Onowu Igwe) when the Igwe was alive, and the cabinet was led by its secretary.

The choice of our late Igwe's successor became the top discussion. Many said that we needed someone who would serve us like the late Igwe E. M. O. Ezeh, someone who had the community's interest at heart, someone who could bring development, someone who was young and vibrant, as well as an Ọzọ titleholder in line with our tradition.

After much deliberation by the people on how the late Igwe was selected and the agreement reached during his coronation in 1976, the choice of Ọzọ Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe was agreed upon by the overwhelming majority in attendance. The choice of Onuokaibe was accepted as he fell within the same age bracket as our late Igwe when he was chosen. A delegation was sent to inform him of the community's decision and his choice as our new Igwe based on his deeds in the community and his desire to serve. He told them that he would need to make a series of consultations before giving his response. After his consultations, which took months, he accepted.

His name was submitted to the local government, which accepted him, and then to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters between December 28, 2023, and January 6, 2024.

On February 2, 2024, the community held a grand reception for him. Our people donated money to ensure that this was done. During this process, Prince Lawrence Ezeh and Simon Anobi brought their own candidate, which the community saw as madness, as their era of imposing leaders on us was over. He did everything possible to frustrate the February 2024 grand reception, including using thugs, but none worked. The grand reception was attended by the who's who in Mburubu, including the parents of the town union president, the publisher of Time Africa Magazine, Dr. Chidi Peters Okorie (now Prince Lawrence Ezeh’s media propagandist), Chief Chinedu Ezechukwu, Hon. Njoku Ifeanyi, Ndi Nze na Ọzọ, cabinet members, Ndi omenala, among others.

Before the grand reception, Prince Lawrence Ezeh attempted to arrest Hon. Njoku Ifeanyi a day before the event to frustrate the occasion, but that was stopped by the intervention of good people and Ọzọ Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe. After the grand reception, the vulnerable villagers who attended were battered and molested by Prince Lawrence Ezeh's men. They had warned people not to attend or face a fine of ₦100,000, which fell on deaf ears because of the freedom of association. The people can now decide for themselves because they now have people who can defend them. The then PDP chairman in Mburubu Ward, Hon. Stephen Egbo, was attacked, as well as his family and other villagers. The news was carried by radio, social media, and print media. It took the intervention of Chief Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe, who came with security agencies to rescue those they arrested and placed under house arrest. What manner of a wicked son is this?

How Prince Ezeh Wanted to Impose an Igwe on Us

While his father's remains were still lying in the morgue, he did the unthinkable with Mr. Simon Anobi when they raised the issue of outcasts, which nobody had in mind in Mburubu, only for Chief Simon Aniobi to have access to the Igwe stool. That could have caused serious unrest in our community because they started segregating some people, but it was quenched and subdued by our people, as we now have people who can match them penny for penny, contact for contact.

What people keep asking Prince Lawrence Ezeh and his cohorts is: Where was the 2003 Town Union constitution when Prince Lawrence Ezeh took Chief Simon Anobi to the then-governor after his father's death to recognize him—Chief Simon Aniobi—as the Igwe to replace his father? Where was the 2003 Town Union constitution when Hon. Emmanuel Edeh was busy campaigning to be the Igwe after the death of E. M. O. Ezeh? Where was the said constitution they always refer to when he was imposing leaders on us as Town Union presidents?

Igweship Selection/Election

Prince Lawrence Ezeh, Chief Simon Aniobi, and their cohorts resorted to using a controversial 2003 Mburubu Town Union constitution that is not approved by the ministry and not gazetted with the Enugu State government over the 1976 Mburubu Autonomous Community constitution, which is gazetted with the Enugu State government, to conduct an Igweship election for us. God forbid—a constitution that recognizes only six villages instead of seven in the community and states that the Igweship election is by delegates, with only 18 designated people to vote, as each village is expected to select three persons. The land of our community will never allow such sacrilege. Thank God for the timely court injunction.

Prince Ezeh, Hon. Emma Edeh, and Simon Anobi wanted to use 18 people to choose an Igwe for a community that has over 30,000 people. "Arụ" (abomination). That would have been an aberration to the gods and man. The imposition of a Traditional Prime Minister (Onowu Igwe) by Prince Lawrence Ezeh on the cabinet members after the demise of the late Igwe E. M. O. Ezeh is a taboo in Igbo land. It is the duty of the Igwe to appoint his Traditional Prime Minister, not his son. Doing so after the death of the Igwe is a taboo.

We say no to all these impunities in our community, Mburubu! The head of the Igwe cabinet after the demise of the Igwe is the cabinet's secretary, Chief Ọnwụka Ezekwe.

Court Judgment of February 12, 2025

For the court to choose a Town Union constitution that is not gazetted with the Enugu State government over the 1976 Mburubu Autonomous Community constitution is something to look into. For a court to give the Town Union power to conduct an election of Igwe in Mburubu community outside the process of election of Igwe in the 2003 Town Union constitution it chose is still questionable.

For the court to say that the late Igwe was elected based on village seniority, whereas Uhuegbe village still had recognition as the eldest village during the coronation of the late Igwe from Umudara village, is a big fallacy that we believe the appeal court will overrule if all court cases are not withdrawn.

Our Appeal for Peace

Let our people know that courts do not give communities traditional rulers—the people do. Mburubians must come together, withdraw all court cases, and allow what happened in 1976 to happen again if a few cabals feel they were not carried along. Let all parties go to the field and test their popularity among the male and female indigenes of Mburubu aged 18 and above for a confirmation election, as was done in January 2004 when there were two factions of the Town Union executive.

Let the gods be consulted by Eze Anị Mburubu for spiritual approval.

Let me cap it like this: "Court anaghị enye Igwe. Obodo ga eweta udo." Anybody who emerges from the court process will be known as "Igwe Court." He will not receive the needed accolade from the people.

God bless Mburubu people.
God bless Nkanu East.
God bless Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
God bless Enugu State.

Court Stops Mburubu Igweship Election

The Enugu State High Court has issued an order restraining Mburubu Town Union from conducting, observing, or assisting in any election into the Traditional Igweship Stool of Mburubu Community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Delivering the ruling on Wednesday, Justice R. O. Odugu granted an interim injunction barring the respondents, their agents, or any representatives from conducting or facilitating any election in Mburubu Community, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

According to reports, the order followed a motion ex-parte filed by Chief Edwin Onwuka, the Secretary of Mburubu Igwe's Cabinet, and Chief Sylvanus Njoku on behalf of the Igwe’s Cabinet of Mburubu, which sought to restrain the Mburubu Town Union, who are the 6th respondent to the suit, or any of their representatives from conducting any election in the community.

The suit, marked E/162M/2025, lists the Attorney-General of Enugu State and the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs as respondents, alongside Hon. Emmanuel Edeh, Mr. Nwosu John, Mr. Ogbonna Igbudu, and Mr. Nwankwo Samuel, representing the Mburubu Town Union (MTU), who had earlier scheduled to hold an election in the community on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Applicants, through their counsel, Nnamdi B. Aneke Esq., argued that the planned election should not proceed, citing unresolved issues surrounding the selection process, which dwells so much on the constitution of the community.

The motion, also supported by an affidavit deposed to by Chief Ezekwe Onwuka of Uhuagu Village, Mburubu, was later granted by the presiding judge, Justice R. O. Odugu, who adjourned the case to March 6, 2025, for further hearing.

PoliticsAn Independent Analysis Of Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu’s Educational Programs And Inte by Kizito49(op): 6:27pm On Feb 22, 2025
AN INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS OF HON. CHIMAOBI SAM ATU’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND INTERVENTIONS

BY MOSES C.C. ABEL
08130047900

Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency under Labour Party at the House of Representatives since 2023, has implemented several educational initiatives aimed at supporting indigent but academically gifted students. These programs, primarily executed through the Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation (C-SAF), have significantly impacted his constituency, where I also reside and conduct most of my business. His initiatives promote access to quality education and foster academic excellence, setting a new standard for educational support within Enugu State.

1. *SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS*
*a. SSCE Scholarships*

In February 2024, Hon. Atu awarded scholarships covering WAEC and school fees to over 106 underprivileged but brilliant SS3 students from 24 public secondary schools in his constituency. This was the first mass scholarship in Enugu State provided by a first-time legislator after the 2023 general elections. By taking this bold step, he set an example for other politicians in Enugu State, demonstrating that supporting a child’s education is equivalent to supporting the future of the nation.
Hon. Atu made it clear that no willing and capable student in Enugu North and Enugu South Federal Constituency would be denied an education due to financial difficulties. His scholarship initiative is inclusive, providing support regardless of political affiliation, family background, or personal connections. This approach has set a high standard for other leaders in Enugu State and beyond to follow.
This intervention specifically targeted students who could not register for WAEC due to financial constraints, ensuring they had the opportunity to complete their secondary education. Many of these students were orphans who had lost both parents, and some faced significant challenges due to unsupportive guardians.

b. *Expansion of the Scholarship Scheme in 2025*
Recognizing the need for broader support, Hon. Atu inaugurated a Scholarship Board headed by Dr. Chidi Ezinwa (HOD of Mass Communication Dept. ESUT) to oversee the selection of 1,200 SS2 students for scholarships. These students went through a competitive examination, and the 245 top performers received full coverage for WAEC and school fees. Additionally, the top students in JAMB will receive full tertiary education scholarships, ensuring continuity in their academic pursuits.
c. 2025 Full University Scholarship Individual Scholarships
Hon. Atu's dedication to education transcends group initiatives; he also offers individual scholarships to deserving students, irrespective of their state of origin. A key distinction of Hon. Atu’s approach is his transparency.

The first example is the case of Nnam Chinenye Perpetual, a beneficiary of his scholarship program. During an interview with ESUT Monitor, she confirmed that Hon. Atu paid her school fees, development levy, and acceptance fees in full. His comprehensive approach ensures that students do not face financial difficulties midway through their education. To verify his claims, one can visit Urban Girls’ Secondary School, Ogui New Layout, to check the WAEC students' records for 2024, or visit ESUT’s Pharmacy Department to confirm the last admission list. Hon. Atu’s transparency makes independent verification of his impact straightforward.
He also awarded a scholarship to Elizabeth Christopher to study Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and to Mohammed Idris to study History and International Relations at ESUT. The three and many others are currently in their first year. This makes it easy to verify.

*d. Unity Schools Scholarships in 2024 and 2025*
Hon. Atu has also focused on increasing access to federal unity schools by providing scholarships to outstanding primary six pupils. This initiative aims to restore confidence in public education and encourage academic excellence among younger students. By targeting primary education, he is ensuring that the foundation of learning is strong, ultimately fostering a more educated and competitive generation.

*2. INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN EDUCATION*

a. *Construction of Classrooms at Coal Camp Primary School*

In response to the community's plea, Hon. Atu facilitated the construction of a block of six classrooms at Coal Camp Primary School, Ogbete Enugu. Originally built by colonialists in 1924, the school's infrastructure had severely deteriorated over the century. Hon. Atu demolished the dilapidated building and, through collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SSAP-SDGs), oversaw its reconstruction. The new classrooms were commissioned on February 14, 2025.

*b. Renovation of Chemistry Laboratory at ESUT*
Hon. Atu renovated the Chemistry Laboratory at the Department of Industrial Chemistry, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), where he graduated. This upgrade provides students with improved facilities for practical learning, enhancing the quality of education in the sciences, one of my students in the department confirmed this also.

*3 . YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT*
Understanding the importance of self-reliance and practical skills, Hon. Atu organized a five-day training and empowerment program in May 2024, focusing on the production and marketing of chemical products. A student named Ugochi, who will be writing JAMB this year, and Cynthia, a student of Tansian University, Umunya, among others, were beneficiaries. In fact, when I visited Anambra, upon my return, she gave me 5 kg of liquid soap as a gift because she learned about the program through me. I had to support her because that is what she is using to sustain herself in school, as are others.
This initiative targeted SS3 students and recent school leavers within the Enugu North and South Federal Constituency during the year 2024. The training took place at the Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) Main Hall, Enugu. The program aimed to equip young individuals with skills to become self-reliant, reducing unemployment and fostering entrepreneurship.
The closing ceremony saw participants receiving meaningful startup materials and capital to begin their entrepreneurial journey. Hon. Atu emphasized the strong correlation between lack of skills and crime, highlighting the necessity of equipping young people with vocational skills to build a crime-free and economically stable society.
In October 2024, Hon Atu and National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) also organized training and empowerment programme for fresh school leavers and young graduates on solar energy Installation and Marketing. Apart from the National certificate issued to the participant, they were empowered with tools and capital to run their own companies.

*COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS*
Hon. Atu’s educational interventions are more holistic compared to many lawmakers who focus solely on policy advocacy or infrastructural development only. His approach integrates financial support, skill acquisition, and infrastructural improvement, ensuring a long-term impact. Unlike some legislators who provide intermittent educational support, his commitment spans primary to tertiary education, reinforcing continuity in academic pursuits.
Furthermore, his initiatives bridge the gap between education and employment by empowering students with marketable skills. His scholarship programs do not discriminate based on political affiliations or ethnicity, fostering inclusivity and national unity.

*CONCLUSION*
Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu’s dedication to education reflects his deep commitment to human capital development. His direct, grassroots-oriented approach ensures immediate and tangible benefits for students and their families. By prioritizing long-term academic growth, skill acquisition, and infrastructural improvements, he has created a sustainable model that can be emulated by other lawmakers to drive meaningful change in Nigeria’s educational landscape.

BusinessHow Nanoedge Is Fighting Unemployment In Nigeria by Kizito49(op): 9:23pm On Feb 17, 2025
With youth unemployment soaring and crime rates on the rise, Nigeria is grappling with a critical challenge: how to equip its young population with the skills needed to secure sustainable income. NanoEdge, an innovative digital job platform, is addressing this issue by offering Nigerian students and young professionals access to high-demand skills and remote job opportunities that pay in stable currencies.

The problem is massive. Millions of young Nigerians face unemployment or underemployment, leaving many with limited options to sustain themselves. This economic hardship has contributed to a rise in social vices such as cybercrime, fraud, and other illicit activities. However, the core issue extends beyond the absence of jobs—it stems from a disconnect between young people's skills and those demanded by the modern economy.

While traditional employment opportunities are scarce, the global remote job market is booming. NanoEdge seeks to bridge this gap by equipping young Nigerians with digital skills that align with international job demands. The platform focuses on areas such as web development, app design, digital marketing, graphic design, video editing, and virtual assistance—fields that are increasingly essential in the global economy.

“The future of work is digital,” said Bona Akubue, the CEO of NanoEdge. “If Nigerian youth can master these skills, they can earn a stable income without relying on government support or resorting to crime.”

Unlike traditional job boards, NanoEdge provides more than just job listings. The platform offers training programs, mentorship opportunities, and resources designed to help users develop high-income skills. By doing so, it enables young Nigerians to secure remote work opportunities with global companies while earning in stable currencies like the U.S. dollar. For many, this represents a lifeline in an economy plagued by instability and limited local opportunities.

The initiative also underscores a broader call to action for governments, businesses, and educational institutions to prioritize digital skill development. Nigeria has no shortage of talent; what it lacks is access to the right training programs and platforms that connect its workforce to global opportunities.

“If we invest in skills and remote work infrastructure,” said Bona Akubue, “we won’t just reduce unemployment—we’ll also tackle crime at its root. The best way to keep young people out of crime is by giving them legitimate ways to earn a living.”

NanoEdge’s mission is clear: empower Nigerian youth to take control of their futures. By equipping them with marketable skills and connecting them with employers worldwide, the platform offers a pathway out of poverty and into financial independence.

For young Nigerians eager to begin their journey toward economic stability, NanoEdge provides an opportunity not just to learn but also to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

How Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi Emmanuel is Redefining Real Estate in the South East

By Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor

It is quite becoming a model for success the way Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi Emmanuel, the Managing Director of Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd., has been transforming the real estate sector in the South East since he opened the company in 2020. One cannot talk about modern housing development in the region without mentioning his name. From Enugu to Anambra, Abia to Imo, his footprint is everywhere, turning undeveloped lands into thriving estates with world-class infrastructure. In a sector where many developers cut corners, he has built a reputation for quality, integrity, and innovation. What surprises is his ability to deliver luxury at an affordable cost, making homeownership a reality for the middle class without compromising on standards.

It does not end there. Unlike many in the industry who focus only on profits, Architect Chibuikem is equally invested in human capital development. Through Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd., he has created numerous job opportunities, empowering young architects, engineers, and artisans to refine their craft. His projects do not just provide shelter; they stimulate economic growth, attract investors, and redefine urban planning in the South East. Even in times of economic hardship, he finds ways to keep construction ongoing, ensuring that those who depend on the industry for survival do not go hungry. Many who have encountered him testify to his mentorship and willingness to guide young professionals on the path to excellence.

A significant aspect of his success is his ability to identify prime locations and transform them into modern housing communities that meet global standards. Across Enugu, his estates stand as evidence of meticulous planning and superior craftsmanship. Estates such as Golden Gate Estate Enugu, Hosanna Estate Enugu, David’s Court Estate Enugu, Shiloh Gardens Estate Enugu, Pine Crest Estate Enugu, and Cedar Crest Estate have redefined urban living. Many of these projects were met with overwhelming demand, leading to rapid sales and a growing reputation for excellence in residential development. The success of Nazareth City Layout and Goodness Estate Layout in Enugu further proves his ability to anticipate market trends and deliver accordingly.

Beyond Enugu, Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd. has made a name for itself in cities like Owerri, Aba, and Asaba. In Owerri, the company has developed landmark residential projects such as Golden Gate Estate Owerri, Palmwood Estate Owerri, and Conquest Estate Owerri, offering modern, serene environments for residents. In Aba, similar projects like Conquest Estate Aba and Golden Gate Estate Aba have given the city a new identity in housing development, proving that quality real estate is not limited to state capitals. Asaba has also benefited from his expertise, with developments such as City Gate Estate, Golden Gate Estate, and Shiloh Gardens Estate setting new benchmarks for well-planned residential areas. One of the finest and renowned imprints of the company was the selling of conquest estate which was developed by Enugu state Housing corporation.

What sets him apart is not just his ability to build, but his understanding of what makes a community thrive. His estates are not just clusters of houses but carefully planned environments with proper road networks, drainage systems, green spaces, and security infrastructure. This attention to detail has earned Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd. the trust of buyers looking for reliability and long-term value. His collaboration with government agencies and private sector partners has also helped in fast-tracking projects that cater to a wide range of income levels, proving that a good home should not be a privilege for the wealthy alone.

Another remarkable quality of Architect Chibuikem’s approach is his ability to execute large-scale developments while maintaining a personal connection with his clients. Many homeowners speak highly of the transparency in his company’s dealings, from land acquisition to project completion. Unlike some developers who abandon projects halfway or engage in legal battles over property ownership, he ensures that every estate is properly documented and legally secured. This has given buyers confidence in investing in his projects, knowing they are dealing with a company that values integrity.

His success has also inspired other real estate developers, raising the standard of competition in the sector. Many now see the need to adopt his model of balancing affordability with top-tier infrastructure. By setting the pace, Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd. is gradually shifting the narrative of real estate in the South East from one plagued by substandard projects and unfulfilled promises to one driven by excellence and sustainable growth.

Beyond the business of real estate, Architect Chibuikem’s impact extends to philanthropy. He has supported various community initiatives, offering scholarships to students from less privileged backgrounds and funding infrastructure projects in rural areas. His commitment to social responsibility shows that success is not only measured by financial achievements but by the ability to make a difference in people’s lives. His vision is clear—to build not just houses but a future where homeownership is accessible, communities are well-structured, and young professionals are given the opportunity to grow.

As the demand for quality housing continues to rise, it is evident that Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd. will remain a dominant force in the industry. Those who wish to understand the future of real estate in the South East need not look too far—Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi Emmanuel is already shaping it. His work speaks for itself, and for those who have watched his journey, there is no doubt that he is just getting started.

Think real estate, think Powell.

Mburubu Elders and Stakeholders Appeal Controversial Judgment, Reaffirm Igwe Dr. Onuokaibe as Legitimate Ruler

The Mburubu General Assembly has announced that it has appealed the judgment of the Enugu State High Court, which ordered a fresh election over the traditional rulership tussle in the community.

Speaking to newsmen in Enugu on Friday regarding the group's position following the court's verdict, the counsel to the assembly, Barr. Chijioke Odueze, described the ruling as not only surprising but a clear case of injustice against the will of the people.

He stated that for the court to acknowledge both the 1976 and 2003 constitutions of the community, only to disregard the former in favor of the latter, was not only astonishing but also a travesty of justice. He further disclosed that the group had filed a stay of execution of the judgment, pending the determination of their appeal.

According to him, "There were people contesting for the traditional leadership of Mburubu, which is currently held by Chief Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe. The matter was slated for judgment on February 12th, where the trial judge, Hon. Justice Egbe, ordered a fresh election and the use of the 2003 constitution, which is not known to anybody."

Barr. Odueze also confirmed that a notice of appeal had been duly filed, expressing confidence that the appellate court would ensure justice prevails. "A stay of execution was filed immediately in line with the dictates of the law, alongside the notice of appeal. We have served all relevant parties involved, including the Attorney General of Enugu State and the Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Rural Development, who are the 4th and 5th respondents," he stated.

He reiterated that the 1976 constitution remains the only known and widely accepted document guiding the traditional leadership structure of Mburubu. "This was the same constitution under which the late Igwe, HRH Igwe EMO. Ezeh, was elected and enthroned without dispute. It is, therefore, illogical to impose an unfamiliar document on the people at this point."

He further warned that any attempt to enforce the judgment without exhausting all legal processes would amount to a direct affront to the customs and traditions of the community. "We are determined to see this matter through to a logical and just conclusion, as we believe the appellate court will not allow such injustice to stand."

Meanwhile, the Ndị Nze na Ọzọ Mburubu and Ákwá Mburubu, the highest traditional groups in the community, have strongly condemned the judgment, affirming that the 1976 constitution remains the legally recognized framework for kingship selection. They maintained that it was under this same constitution that the late Igwe, HRH Igwe EMO. Ezeh, was rightfully enthroned.

It was gathered that the judgment left the community in shock and distress, with many expressing concerns over what they described as an attempt to undermine their long-standing traditions. However, the situation was calmed by their Igwe-elect, Igwe Dr. Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe, who reassured the people of a just resolution.

Reports indicate that over 80% of the community members stand firmly in support of Igwe Dr. Onuokaibe, whom they regard as the rightful traditional ruler. They argue that his emergence was in line with the people's will and must not be overturned by external influences.

Community leaders and stakeholders have called on the government and relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served by upholding the decision of the people. They insist that any attempt to subvert their choice would not only violate their customs but could also lead to unnecessary unrest.

As the legal battle continues, the people of Mburubu remain resolute in their support for Igwe Dr. Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe, expressing confidence that the appellate court will set aside the judgment and reaffirm his position as their rightful traditional ruler.

Politics"New Tax Law Will Drive Investment, Says Powell Homes Boss" by Kizito49(op): 6:59pm On Feb 08, 2025
Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah of Enugu State has been commended for signing into law the bill establishing a one-stop shop for tax collection and administration in the state.

The Managing Director of Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd, Architect Chibuikem Onyekachi, made this known on Saturday during a media chat with newsmen on the importance of the new law signed by the governor to the state and its residents.

He lauded the new legislation, describing it as a transformative step towards enhancing the business environment and economic growth of Enugu State.

“This is a commendable initiative by Governor Mbah. With the consolidation of our state's revenue collection process into one autonomous body, the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service, Enugu State will not only have eliminated the burden of multiple taxation but will also foster a more conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive.”

He emphasized the significance of the new law in improving the Ease of Doing Business in the state. “For years, business owners, market women, and investors have struggled with the complexities and frustrations of dealing with numerous tax collectors. With this new law, all of that confusion ends. It brings transparency and simplicity, which are critical for attracting new investments,” he explained.

Architect Onyekachi highlighted that an autonomous revenue service would allow for greater efficiency and accountability. “Having the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service operate independently means they can set realistic targets and operate with the professionalism of a private enterprise. This autonomy is key to maximizing our internal revenue generation without imposing additional tax burdens on the citizens.”

He urged the people of Enugu State to applaud and support this progressive move by the governor, adding that it will be more beneficial to them in the near future. “We should all be proud of this achievement. It’s a bold step that reflects the administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment. With streamlined tax collection, we can expect to see an increase in the state’s internally generated revenue, which translates to more funds for development projects that benefit everyone.”

Onyekachi also expressed optimism that the law would inspire other states in Nigeria to adopt similar measures. “Governor Mbah’s leadership in this area sets a precedent. It’s a model that other states can look to, as it balances government revenue needs with the realities of business operations. Enugu is truly setting the pace.”

However, the signing of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment and Consolidation of Revenue Administration) Law, 2025, has been widely received as a landmark achievement in the state’s economic reforms, signaling a new era of streamlined governance and economic prosperity.

Politics"Senator Ngwu Leads 15 Lawmakers To Minister Of Works" by Kizito49(op):
Senator Ngwu Leads 15 Lawmakers to Minister of Works: Calls for Immediate Completion of Ugwuoyeama Section of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

..... As Death Toll Rises to Over 95

The Minority Whip and Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial Zone, Engr. Osita Ngwu, on Wednesday led 15 Federal lawmakers from Enugu and Anambra States to meet with the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, and the contractor handling the Enugu-Onitsha expressway over what they described as the dangerous delay of the project, which has caused series of accidents, resulting in many lost lives.

In a meeting held at the Federal Ministry of Works Abuja, that lasted for hours, the lawmakers made it clear that the entire South East was worried about the poor funding of many projects in the region, especially the Enugu-Onitsha road.

Speaking on their behalf, Senator Ngwu stated the reasons behind their emergency visit as well as why a state of emergency should be declared on that particular section of the road.

According to him, “We are here to discuss three things. One, we want to emphasize the need to complete all the ongoing road projects in the South East, especially the Enugu–Onitsha dual carriageway, which is being funded by MTN through the tax credit scheme. Two, we are here to also emphasize the need to pay urgent attention to the Ugwuoyeama section of the road, where many have lost their lives. Three, to find out the challenges in funding the projects.”

Senator Ngwu further explained that the lawmakers were willing to do whatever it would take to have the road completed immediately, adding that the road has turned into a death trap for commuters.

The 15 Lawmakers from Enugu and Anambra state who joined the team that visited the minister, including Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), Senator Kelvin Chukwu (Enugu East), Senator Okey Ezea (Enugu North), and Senator Tony Nwoye (Anambra North). Others included Hon. Owuegbu Anayo (Aninri/Awgu/Oji River), Hon. Nnamchi Paul Sunday (Enugu East/Isi-Uzo), Hon. Atu Chimaobi Sam (Represented) (Enugu North/Enugu South), Hon. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha (Ezeagu/Udi), Hon. Agbo Denis Nnamdi (Igbo-Eze North/Udenu), Hon. Nnaji Nnolim John (Nkanu East/Nkanu West), Hon. Obetta Mark Chidi (Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South), Hon. Prof. Orogbu Obiageli Lilian (Awka North and South).

Responding to the lawmakers’ request, the Minister explained that his Ministry and the Federal Government were willing to force MTN to complete the roads immediately or have the contract terminated.

He stated that the project is being funded by MTN under the tax credit scheme, but the Federal Government was tired of the games MTN was playing with the contract.

He also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to terminating the agreement with MTN should they continue to delay the road construction, as lives and properties are being lost frequently.

“This meeting is about finding solutions. If MTN is willing to play games, we are not going to play games with people’s lives and properties. People are dying, and I am willing to have this contract terminated if your company (MTN) is not ready. This joke must stop here and now. I will send a letter of irrevocable commitment to you (MTN) tomorrow and extract a timeline on when this project must be completed. If that doesn’t happen, we shall end this contract and award it to another contractor immediately.”

Also speaking at the meeting, Senator Victor Umeh pleaded with the Minister to pay attention to the plight of the South East. He argued that the South East is part of Nigeria and should be treated fairly.

Senator Umeh further urged the Minister to look into other road projects in the zone and the Eastern rail line.

Interacting with journalists after the meeting, Hon. Anayo B. Owuegbu and Hon. Sunday Paul Nnamchi raised concerns over the implications of the continued delay in completing the project. The duo insisted that MTN must complete the project within record time or have the contract terminated, adding that they would do everything within their power to ensure that the right thing is done.

Pyrates Confraternity Commiserates with Enugu State Government, Families over Ugwuonyeama Tragedy

The National Association of Seadogs A.K.A Pyrates Confraternity, Enugu Chapter, has commiserated with the state government and the families of the victims of the recent sordid accident along Ugwuonyeama on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The group condemned in its entirety the persistent road mishaps that frequently occur along the stretch of road, noting that they have caused untold harm to families, particularly in recent times.

In a statement signed by the chapter president of the group, Mr. Joe Mazeli, he lamented the deplorable state of the road and attributed the accidents to a combination of poor road infrastructure, inadequate safety measures, and reckless driving. He called on the relevant authorities to immediately intervene to prevent further loss of lives.

He further emphasized the need for collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society organizations to improve road safety across the state. According to him, public awareness campaigns and training programs for drivers are also essential to reducing preventable accidents.

The Pyrates Confraternity reiterated its commitment to partnering with the government and other stakeholders to address issues affecting the welfare and safety of citizens. It urged the state government to act decisively, as continued negligence would only result in further grief for affected families.

The statement reads :

PERSISTENT PETROL TRUCK ACCIDENTS AT UGWU ONYEAMA: NEVER AGAIN - PYRATES CONFRATERNITY

The National Association of Seadogs A.K.A. Pyrates Confraternity, Enugu Chapter commiserates with the Enugu State Government, families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives and properties in the unfortunate and sordid accident along the Ugwu Onyeama axis of the Enugu - Onitsha expressway on Saturday, January 25, 2025. The gory situation of the accident shows the fragility of life, and how it can easily be snapped out in a few seconds; shattering dreams, aspirations, and plunging the society and families into uncertainty of despair and hopelessness. There's a need to guard and guide life very preciously. We pray for the peaceful repose of the lost souls and grant their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear such irreplaceable and irreparable loss. While appreciating the Enugu State Government for promising to cater for the welfare of the injured.

However, this incident is not the first of such gruesome accidents along that expressway nor in the country at large. After every occurrence, we wail, we condemn, lives are lost, properties are destroyed, and we move on; waiting to repeat ourselves again. These ghastly events trigger the very necessary question: what should be done to forestall further recurrences? We cannot follow the same reactive approach towards these unfortunate accidents and expect different results. It's never possible.

As an Association, we don't believe in mere rhetorical solutions; rather, we believe in practical and pragmatic solutions to societal challenges. As such, we suggest the following:

First, the speedy rehabilitation and reconstruction of the second lane of the road, from Akama Ngwo up to Abakpa Junction. This will ensure free flow of traffic in the opposing direction, without any encumbrances. We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Minister for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Dave Umahi to declare that axis an emergency since the Federal Government has responsibility over the road. The State Government should lobby and appeal to the contractors to get back to the site.

Second, we understand how Government bureaucracy works and also understand that our first appeal will take time to materialise, leading to our second appeal. The Enugu State House of Assembly should as a matter of urgent public importance, craft a bill that will limit the movement of heavy duty trucks, especially those transporting highly flammable liquids and substances in the State from 9pm to 6am. Due to the minimal movement of passengers at this time, when such sad incidents occur, we won't experience loss of lives in the same proportion and magnitude as recorded on Saturday, January 25, 2025.

Third, we call on the Enugu State Police Commissioner, Commander of the 103 Battalion, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), amongst other heads of security agencies in the State, to as a matter of urgency dismantle all barricades serving as checkpoints in the Ugwu Onyeama axis. The topography of the axis requires that vehicular movements don't need to be impeded at all. Those barricades not only prevent free flow of traffic, but also restrict rescue efforts in times of emergency situations.

Fourth, we appeal to the Federal and Enugu State Fire Service to establish a station in the Ugwu Onyeama axis. Our findings show there is an Enugu State Fire Service station at 9th Mile, but that's a few kilometres away from that troubled spot. A Fire Service station will also help to guard the newly set up CNG plant in the axis.

Fifth, the State Ministry of Transport should collaborate with relevant Federal Government Agencies to set up vehicle inspection units in the various highways in the State. According to preliminary investigation for the accident, brake failure was responsible for the carnage. The probability of the accident could have been highly reduced if such inspection units were functional.

Sixth, haulage owners should as a matter of urgency carry out thorough checks of all their vehicles. They should also embark on refresher courses and training for their drivers and managers in respect of other road users. While we understand the importance of their services and appreciate it greatly, we cannot jeopardise our safety on the roads occasioned by their human errors.

In his statement at the scene, Governor Peter Mbah promised to do something immediately to avert a repeat of such a regrettable incident. We assure the Governor of our support and partnership towards this expected action, and promise to remind him if the solution delays. We call on all relevant stakeholders and motorists to join this fight of making our roads safe. The incident at Ugwu Onyeama as well as those in Niger State and across the country could have been anyone. We all share in the blame as a result of our collective conspiracy of silence and tacit neglect. It is exactly time to strategize in order to avert further recurrences of this painful event so that never again shall we experience such avoidable carnage.

Anayo Befford Onwuegbu, has expressed joy over the release of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, from the United Kingdom’s prison.

Hon. Onwuegbu made the remarks on Thursday while addressing newsmen at the House of Representatives complex, Abuja.

He stated that the release of Mrs. Ekweremadu from the UK’s prison and eventual return to Nigeria brings joy to her immediate family, Mpu community, and the people of Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency.

He described Mrs. Ekweremadu as a trailblazer whose commitment to the welfare of the people, especially people from Greater Awgu, is always felt by all.

According to him, “I gladdened with the news of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu's release from UK prison. This has brought so much joy and a sense of ecstasy to our people, especially her immediate family. She is my constituent and the wife of my very respected brother, Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu. Her release and return to Nigeria is a great relief to her family and many of us. You must have read or seen videos of people celebrating her return. To be honest with you, her immediate family will have a better temperature at this point, given her long absence from the country. No mother wishes to be separated from her family for this long. I completely understand the situation and how difficult it was for loved ones and our people. She is welcome back home.”

Also speaking on the expected release of Senator Ekweremadu, Hon. Onwuegbu stated that he is in high hope that the former lawmaker will be released sooner than expected.

“This is a legal matter, but I am hopeful he will come out stronger. Senator Ekweremadu is a great son of Enugu State who has contributed immensely to the development of our dear state and country. I have visited him in the UK, and we spoke on a lot of issues. I must confess that he is in high spirits", Hon stated.

The lawmaker also appreciated the support provided to the family of Ekweremadu during this hard period by friends, constituents, and well-wishers, adding that it is one that has uplifted their faith and spirit.
