Five years ago, Tade, Teni and Tayo left their home town, Ipetu-Ijesha in Osun state to Lagos state in search of greener pastures. After settling in the Akoka area in Yaba Lagos, the three decided to start up a petty trade to make ends meet. Tade was able to acquire a bus on hire which he uses as a commuter bus taking people to and fro the Yaba environ. He also joined the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Yaba chapter two years ago. He has however not been an active member of the union, and a constant defaulter of the union dues. In 2015, tax officials from the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) approached the NURTW, Yaba chapter with the view to begin the assessment of its members. Self-assessment forms were provided to the union to ease the payment of taxes by their members. However, Tade has over the years blatantly refused to collect the self-assessment forms and to adhere to the payment as he opines that the government has not been responsible and does not deserve his tax quota. Teni on the other hand, was able to acquire a shop in Yaba market which she uses as a provision store selling all sorts of beverages, food items, toiletries and drinks. She also sells recharge cards in her shop. Over the years, Teni’s small business has flourished, with a fifty percent increment in her profit base since her business started. At several occasions since 2015, the tax awareness team of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has approached Teni for the purpose of assessing her to determine her tax liability. Teni has however refused to acquire a self assessment form for the purpose of paying income tax and has also refused to pay VAT on her goods. On a particular day, she shouted at and kicked the tax officials out of her shop for demanding self-assessment forms from her. In 2013, Tayo got a job at Exxon Mobil Ltd, a company involved in refining of crude oil. In 2015, he got promoted to the office of the Chief Financial Officer of the company responsible for keeping all companies records and making all payments due. Few months after assuming office, the company received a notice from Federal Inland Revenue Service about their default in filing adequate tax return under Petroleum Profit Tax Act (PPTA) and Companies Income Tax Act (CITA) respectively. Due to the dissatisfaction with the audited accounts and returns filed by the company, the Board assessed the company to a taxable profit of 1.5 million naira as opposed to the 1million naira which the company declared. The company however filed a response to the petition of the Board containing the following; That it is not subject to tax under the PPTA as it is not a petroleum company, thus not liable to pay tax, and That the company has not erred in its declaration of 1 million naira as profit for the purpose of assessing tax. Flowing from the above issues, the LIRS and FIRS have approached you as a tax consultant and practitioner to address them and proffer solution to the issue of tax compliance by Nigerians as manifest in Tade, Teni and Tayo’s case. In addressing tax compliance, you are to identify the issues arising in the facts and address them, proffering solutions to them in accordance with the relevant statutes. Kindly share your intellectual view on this pls. |

*Nigerian Association of Psychology Sfudents (NAPS),OAU Chapter* *OUR PEOPLE, OUR PRIORITY* Permit me to first appreciate all our members that played invaluable roles in the case of *Dare* yesterday. As the president of the association, I was informed yesterday. A member sent the notification to me on WhatsApp like 8am,although I received it some minutes after 10am because I wasn't online. As I received the message,I replied that,"I would call him--that's his brother" Without any jot of procrastination, I called his brother to really know how and where it happened. I confirmed the necessary information from the brother and asked about the steps that had been taken in which he narrated that the case had been reported to a police station in Ile Ife. I faithfully assured him that we would work on informing authorities that would work on the case meanwhile, we would not stop exploring various publicity means to keep the entire university community aware of the issue. Calls were made to some people that could be of help on campus ,especially those in higher authorities but there wasn't tangible feedback. *Why I didn't make a release yesterday ?* It's not an abnormal thing for members to react to the silence maintained on the issue. Yes, I believe that and I also even believe strongly in the Yoruba saying that, *"onilu koni je kotu"*. I was totally embarrassed and disappointed yesterday by the power supply of where I travelled to. The little energy on my was being used to appear shortly online and make more of calls before it finally shutdown. Much to my chagrin,I was told the light would only be restored in the midnight. What would I do? I was left with nothing than prayer and also planning to be back to campus as early as possible this morning (although not as planned) but to inform authorities that could be of help physically. On that note,I would like to tender my unreserved apology to all members of NAPS for the delay in making release to update us about the missing case. Once again, I sincerely appreciate everyone that sent messages to me(Just saw some this midnight tho) and most importantly people that rebroadcasted the broadcasts on different platfotms . All thanks to God that the member involved has been found. Finally, as mentioned, *"Our members" is our priority*. I shall continue to slim in flesh and bone to ensure that the welfare of members is not adulterated. And to our Muslim members, happy Eidel-Adha ,I'm sincerely sorry this is coming late. Thanks (Class of Elites--part three) Thanks to NAPS OAU members Thanks to OAU community. Hammid Ismaheel O.(AMID) President, NAPS OAU Chapter. |

History!!! Baby delivered in Moremi Hall Toilet, OAU Clocks Four Today The baby delivered on the 19th of June 2013 in one of the female halls of residence clocked for today. It should be recalled that it is four years today that a baby was delivered in the toilet of Moremi Hostel by a 400-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Oyinlola Rotimi, been named the baby Nifemi, Okikiola. Oyinola Rotimi, who was inexperienced in child bearing, thought she had a stomach upset when she was actually in labour. When the mother who was a student of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development then OAU, report has it that she told news men that the circumstances that surrounded the delivery of her baby made her “a celebrity.” One of her friends was quoted then saying "Rotimi was extremely happy at the naming. We never plan it that way. We should have celebrated more if not for the fact that examination". We also gathered that some OAU students, who were not at the naming of the baby created their own fun by organising another ceremony, where they named the baby after the then Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bamitale Omole, the baby was given the following names; Moremibiyi, (Moremi gave birth to this), Morounmboni University (I came back with something worthy from the University), Awobola (Awo gave birth to wealth), EsinIdanwoleyi (This is the result of examination) a.k.a, Special Elective with a matric number; MOR/2013/001. The first student to be admitted for the session’ The father of the baby, a 400-level student of Engineering then in OAU, Oyewole was said not to be happy with the controversy that surrounded the birth of his baby. However, the students of Obafemi Awolowo University today remembered the birth of the baby as he clocked four today.
