So we have reduced Nairaland to this level of insignificant and irrelevant 'news'. Nairaland used to be informative and knowledge-inducing. It used to be a gathering of brilliant minds. Gone are those days.

Nairaland now shops for 'news' on instagram. This is so sad for a forum that used to stimulate one's intellect. These days, your IQ drops going through the feed on Nairaland

Hello everyone
I am sorry this is coming very late. Better late than never. Thanks for all the transcripts posted here, they've been of good use to silent users like me. I had my interview on Friday, Dec 22. It was a quick one. My transcript goes thus:

VO: Collects my I-20. What are you going to the US for?
Me: I am going for my Ms Food Science at the North Carolina A&T state University.
VO: What is your professional goal?
Me: (Takes a pause, this question was totally unexpected ). I would like to be a professional in food preservation in a bid to apply myself to tackling yhe rising food security issues in a developing country like Nigeria.
VO: Did you write any standardized test?
Me: I didn’t, as it was waived because of my gpa and statement of purpose.
VO: What courses will you be taking?
Me: Nutrition and disease, Food preservation, Hazard analysis and critical control points, Food quality control, etc
VO: How applicable are these courses to your professional goal?
Me: (Almost went dumb) Food preservation is central amongst other factors to achieving food security. The knowledge of Nutrition and quality control ensures nutrition is not compromised in a bid to achieving food preservation.
VO: Who will be sponsoring you?
Me: My dad
VO: What does he do for a living?
Me: (mentions my dad's profession)
VO: Do you have any proof to support his abilities to sponsor you?
Me: Passes my SOA
VO: This is not recent and it's for september
Me: I used this when I applied
VO: Has he ever travelled before?
Me: No, he has had no reason to.
I figured this might be the deciding factor and saw her typing away. I had an assistantship from the school which was not documented on my I-20. At that point, I had to scream at the top of my voice, ma'am! I have an assistantship from the school
VO: oh! This isn't stated on your I-20.
She collected my letter of assistantship and put me on administrative processing.
My start date was Jan 8 and it was a race against time. Visa was eventually approved on Jan 3 and was picked up Friday, Jan 5. I had to travel on Sunday just to enter the US on the 8th. I just spent the first week here in the US and I must confess it's been stressful.
Thanks to God and nairaland for making this a dream come true.

Mr Twood

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend to my initial inquiry. I have been placed on AP since Dec 22 and my start date is Jan 8. Is there anything I can do on my part to salvage this situation? It's been the longest week of my life. I'm already spent psychologically.
The research assistanship came in after my I-20 was issued and my guess is the VO wasn't convinced it was genuine. It's the holidays season and school won't resume until January 2 and I feel until then, the VO won't be able to clear her doubt.
What do you advise I do? I'm in a race against time.
I really look forward to your insight on this and I would really appreciate your advice on the right step to take to salvage this. It's all I have ever wanted; to learn, become an expert and hone my skill on the best platform available which NCAT university is offering me.

Thanks for your reply. I'm already frustrated as I have been on AP since Dec 22 and my start date is Jan 8.

If you dont want your village people to win this war, dont try it. On a serious note, its a 50/50 thing if you dont have a letter from your school, you might be sent back home. A recent story about a Ghanaian at Michigan Tech comes to mind http://www.mtu.edu/unscripted/stories/2017/november/finding-home-abroad-michigan-tech.html

Hello Klebsy -

Here is the answer to your question on the DHS website.

https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/getting-to-the-united-states

In short, no, you may enter the US up to 30 days before your start date, but you may not enter the US after the start date on your I-20. If you cannot travel by that date you will need to have your school confirm that you are permitted to arrive late by issuing a new I-20 with a later start date.

[Thanks for the response]

Hello Visa Officer

Thanks for this wonderful platform. I have three questions;

1. Can I enter the US a day or two after the start date on my I-20?

2. My visa approval has been stalled since last week Friday as the VO placed me on administrative processing. My research assistanship was not stated on my I-20 and I guess she was skeptical about its authenticity. My start date is Jan 8 and the school won't resume until Jan 2 for confirmation of this funding. Does the embassy bear this in mind while addressing issues like this?

3. Say, my visa is issued on Jan 8, can I still travel knowing fully well that Jan 8 is the start date. If No, what steps can I take aside deferring my admission till fall.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

[Congrats bro. What date were you placed on AP]After one year of this yankee hustle, Jah has finally done it. It has not been easy- from going to the library and jacking the whole day for GRE (ETS still knack me 308 sha) to preparing for visa interview, it has been God all the way. I want to use this opportunity to thank my brothers from another mother, fredoricko and toomuchsauce, my e-mummy lagosismyhome and TWOODS (although I had to filter your posts sha). God’s favour was clearly discerned immediately I arrived Lagos as my co-passenger in the bus I fared followed me round obalande to ensure I book a hotel since everywhere was strange to me. On getting to the embassy the next day, it was as if I entered a crusade ground. I didn’t know that people can be this obedient and calm. When one woman talk sey she need 7500 for her dad, na so people begin dash her money- everybody wan do good to tey gain God favour for visa. Na so we do biometrics and some other stuffs before main interview con reach. Omo, it was blue paper day. The VOs especially that black American woman was giving out blue papers with great ecstasy. Na so I begin beg God make CGI nor send me to her. Fortunately for me, I was sent to the guy in window 1. The VO was truly a nice person. The following ensued in our conversation.
VO: where do you work? (Has any interview ever started like this?)
Me: Told him about my work
VO: so why Sacramento state?
Me: A lot of reasons made me choose CSUS but for the purpose of this interview I’ll enumerate just 3. Firstly, Prof X IEEE research paper about the miniaturizing of planar baluns for wireless applications gave me a positive impression about the dept. so I didn’t hesitate in contacting him and telling him about my plans. He told me to go ahead and apply. Secondly, although I will be focusing on telecommunications, I needed a department that offers other courses that are relevant to Nigerian situation, courses like power system reliability and planning, CSUS not only has these courses but offers me the opportunity to simultaneously take these courses with telecommunications, moreover, the climate condition in the Sacramento valley is similar to a reasonable degree to the one we have here in Nigeria, so my body can easily adapt while my brain focuses on academic course work.
VO; what is the weather in Sacramento like? (See question )
Me: it has a mild climate unlike the weather in the east coast
VO: what is the current temperature?
Me: 14 degree Celsius
VO: in Fahrenheit?
Me: I don’t know, in Nigeria we use Celsius ( abeg leave weather make you gimme visa jare)
VO: what will you do after you graduate?
Me: upon graduation, I intend to return to my alma mata and take up a lecturing job and after teaching for like 6 years, I believe I will be qualified enough to provide consultancy services to telecommunication giants like MTN, GLO, ETISALAT and the rest.
VO: is it still called etisalat?
Me: oh, no, It’s actually called 9mobile but I believe the name will still change since the banks that etisalat was indebted to are the ones currently controlling it.
VO: who’s paying?
Me: my dad
VO: can I see your financial docs?
Me: sure, passed it
VO: what is your highest degree?
Me: Bsc electrical and electronic engineering
VO: any tests?
Me: I took TOEFL and GRE
VO: what did you score?
Me: I got 308 in GRE and 104 in TOEFL
VO: pass me your score sheets
Me: I passed it
VO: how many months is this program?
Me: I said 20 something months( I can’t really remember)
VO: I will be placing you on administrative processing
Me: OK
VO: Is there anything you would like to retract? (VO facial expression was like “If I see anything oluwole here angry angry, just forget about entering the US for the rest of your life)
Me: no (I had nothing to be afraid of).
I jeje waka comot with white AP paper. Then after just 3 days, AP changed to issued. Na to find cheap flight ticket remain now.

Thanks bro

Two days is fine but communicate with the International Student Program Coordinator in your school telling him/her that you will be coming in 2 days late after school starts. Make sure the person gives you the go ahead or maybe does a covering letter for you. Also have the person's contact on standby just incase the Customs and Border Protection officer decide to call your school.
