When I was discussing expanding the economy, I was talking about the role of State, and not for me to be fed. I was precisely discussing the 'environment' -the enabling environment, Sir.

There is a fundamental flaw in your pitch and I fear it may not be fixed b'cos I read you as a theorist.

For the umpteenth time, we allow the State to drift when we fail as a people in the role of civil society in shaping government action. We cannot leave them alone. We have to be part of policy debates, public presentation of draft statutes, public finance and appropriation reviews, etc. That is is how it works best.

In your first post, you said you failed to see the most essential ingredient being the role of the individual (You and I). I left it because it was unfortunate that you failed to see it in the ensuing act of engaging in debates that is capable of transforming public policy. If we had progressed to discuss rural development, perhaps the next commissioner for rural development could pick a few points.

But you chose to debate out of context. That is what, in the olden days, was termed op. Now op, especially here means original poster. I actually meant the old "out of point"

Now if you wish to switch the discussion to how individuals can excel, fine, but it is a different topic and I would most likely take a different pitch than asking Enugu kids to emulate Ford or George Soros when we lack the enabling investment plank form.

With hope that you will retool and refocus on what will be beneficial to very many, can we now discuss "the role of government which IS TO PROVIDE ENABLING ENVIRONMENT". Or would you, in your usual character, say it is entirely up to me? Retool and the discussion will become useful. How can government perform its role, which is, to provide the right environment for private enterprise to thrive? How can next government in Enugu State improve the overall competitiveness of the State in the global market place? And lets see whether the answer will be macadamized thoroughfare and patachy, overpriced made in China traffic lights basically dumped on hapless ignorant people whom you wish to continue to be ignorant so that the fleecing of our commonly owned wealth will continue endlessly.
Keep shifting the goal post ...I tell ya am good with it.
So remind me again your policy stance or your proposal on the enabling environment that should be implemented in your state Enugu. I read and reread your post but couldn't find any.
Please indulge me again so that we can delve into the nitty gritty of your proposal.
Lastly I was reminded in elementary school that individuals make up a village, town, city, country and it does not take all of them to shift the course of their place of abode...its on you, me anyone out there. We the people are the government not some ghost.

Waiting for your policy debate.

Thanks and be well

You know quite well that I decided to take it easy with you. Comparing apples to oranges is a crafty tool of disinformation.

Nothing, hear me loud, NOTHING, can substitute the role of the State. I was interested in how to better focus the role of State. Mind you, Enugu has an economy that is dominated by State. So better society is much plausible if those in charge of State craft are properly focused and primed to serve the people.

Now you have listed American success stories, which are naturally in America that has remained the world no 1 success story. Toyota brand named after the city of Toyota in Japan is agreat success story of Asia's greates success story, Japan.

In each of the examples you gave, there is a nexus with a government that is able to carry its own weight. For instance, would you also list out the number of schemes that US Govt has for supporting entrepreneurs and budding entrepreneurs, not venturing into a vibrant venture capitalism sector that basically hunts down upstarts with great idea. An earthquake occured in Japan, destroying major arterial roads and the over 200km road was fixed within a span of 10 days. Your government is still telling stories on East-West Road, Enugu-Onitsha Road, Okigwe Port Harcourt Road, etc. and your solution to it all is leave them alone.

Just like we were told then, as biafrans, that we could defeat well-armed federal troops with cutlasses and clubs. Bros, if you were part of Ojukwu's propaganda machine headed then by Chukwumerije with late ace spin doctor radio announver, Okon Okon Ndem, pls say so. But the shocker for you is that it is over 45years dated. It won't work in modern day society.

It will help for us to define and agree the role of the State. I do not agree with you that all we need to do is to leave government alone to do what it pleases. That is not what happens in the US. Get your facts right.

When we have a thread to discuss individual ingenuity and what people can do with their bare hands, we all head in and bring in beautiful thoughts. Right here, I was of the belief that the nice pics courtesy of goodman Spyder880 could be put in context, in the right frame as a lopsided effort of a team that could have done much better.

Now, you won't go far tutoring me or anyone about how to be self reliant. Reason, you sound clearly as a salaried worker and your examples are rusty -why pick the Rockyfellas, the Boeing and Microsoft when you can mention Peace Mass Transit that has over 2,000 buses on different routes all over Nigeria. Who are you trying to intimidate by your google search, eh?

Just pack well
Oh Google, I really forgot about them. Besides the founders, the next richest among them was a university professor who contributed financially to their start up. Hint here. It is not the government .If in doubt ask our very Seun. Seun please how much did the government give you to start this forum?.will make an interesting answer I believe.

Last I checked we are a capitalist society. And the role of government IS TO PROVIDE ENABLING ENVIRONMENT..NOT TO FEED YOU.

So please stop waiting for government to feed you, because it wasn't meant to...it is not their role to feed you, clothe you or find you a wife or husband.

If you really care about the poor in your state. Then start a large company to employ them and stop waiting for someone to do it for you.

But just before we finally leave them, I give you a case study of two States -Akwa Ibom and Enugu. Of all the differences in their financial status, etc. there is one uniting set of factors. They are States where the incumbents have pursued pipedreams for their people and backed it with heavy meadi blitz. Akwa Ibom -uncommon transformation; Enugu -massive (Enugu) urban infrastructure upgrade. Meanwhile unemployment poverty rates in the States continue to sky-rocket. Elitist -Elitism, you choose. Whats the reward? When it was time to call on the people, the people were on the other side. How come the uncommon transformer is fighting in trenches trying to get a successor in and how come Chime of Enugu is failing woefully in holding an ordinary State Chapter of the Party intact. Go also to Ekiti and find out why a PhD holder sitting governor was upstaged by a man that started as a bus conductor.

The choice remains ours
No here are the choices for the like minds like yours.

1. William Boeing like in Boeing aircraft employs 250,000 people
2. Microsoft as in bill gates employs over 150000 people
3. Toyoda as in Toyota cars employs over 300000 people.

The list is too long
But the uniting factor is that they created the "common wealth" you are screaming about without the government and now when they sneeze the government listens.
You know nothing stops anyone from besting the list above, but first one have to roll up their sleeves and grab the shovel or whatever and get to work with mininal noise.

Thanks and be well

Yea, sure. This is quite smart. Instructive too. We should bring ideas of what we can do as individuals.

If you say that and mean we should leave government alone, I say, em em em. Well, should we leave government completely out? And me, ordinary me nwa Omeje begin to exploit coal deposits in Ezimo, Limestone/Cement in Amechi-Idodo, Gas in Ugwuoba and so on? Okay I get the drift -leave government alone... don't even utter a word and let them do whatever they like with our common wealth -like dealing with items that don't come anywhere near the real needs of the people. Perfect!

Well, crazy Amaechi once said that those in government steal public funds because we, the public, allow them.

Now I am confused. I thought it was global best practice for civilians (civil society) to hold government accountable. In fact before then, help in shaping policies and programmes of government.

Now it is clear that I have just been taliking to myself.

Ok. Let's leave them
You give government the very leverage you complain about when you allow them to be in control of those resources. If you are in control or partly in control with many people under your employment then you have leverage over the government. All it takes is for you to be the Innoson of coal and other resources

Why do you always miss the point? Unemad! Unemad!

Abuja is not Enugu nor Lagos nor Ekiti.

Abuja is the centre of the federation. A federation is made up of federating units. It is a federation of the federating units. Our federation is made up of States. They are the ones that should have their economy, you bozo.

Who gave you that phone or laptop? Or have you been smoking something, Unemad?!

In proper fiscal federalism, Enugu's revenue will be retained and a littlle portion sent to the centre. That was how we started in the days of the regions. It was the greed of the Housa/Fulani that led to over centralisation making the federal look like the action point.

Ordinary motor park touts (pigs by Spyder880) have it all arranged. The NURTW Ibadan branch has the resources. Enugu, Ekiti , etc. They retain their park collection dues and make remittances (small proportion) of their proceeds to NURTW national headquarters. That Office at the centre needs do nothing but appropriate what is remitted from the fringes (the federating units)

Let me tell you why you are a complete washout, not deserving of a biafran name:

1. "U talk of oil windfall. Let me ask u. How much is Enugu state budget?" Enugu State budget can be as large as we want it to be. It is small today because the bozos whom you serve and work with have no idea of how to grow local economy which is the recipe for higher IGR. If our IGR is N1tr, Enugu State budget will be N1tr plus what comes from Abuja.

2. "Our biggest natural resource we cannot touch."
I take it to mean coal, right? Why can't you touch it? Play by the rules of the land, onukwu! Anambra floated an Oil Company, not only got allocation of oil well right in the State but also got approval fro refinery. Are you there? Float a power plat, request for rights to your coal, dig it up yourself and sell power to fed government. How does that sound? Probably, you won't comprehend, cos you only know govt is working when a paver is moving up down your street pouring dust on you.

Meanwhile, meanwhile, who tells you coal is Enugu's biggest resourceshuh?? Our rich agricultural land is, buffoon.

Price of crude oil is crashing (instigated by USA), but price of PKO (perm kernel oil) is on the rise on international market. It take local indigenous technology to harness Palm oil and PKO. Google Malaysia right now and tell me what you see. Plam fuits taken from your papa's palm is what they have used to grow.

Summary, there is something called mass hypnotism. It is the cause of your jaundiced perseption and I won't lie to you. It is a difficult disease to cure. Ignorance and illiteracy are easier because its like starting from zero. Someone with that disease is like starting from minu 50, depending on how deep it is rooted.

Unemad, you lack grey matter and you are in advanced stage of that disease.
Is any of these Chimes or Chimas fault?
This part of your contribution got me interested for the simple reason of one important factor that was missing in it . YOU.
Take spyder the producer of this thread for example he does not depend on the government for his livelihood. He goes out there and bring home the bacon.
You have identified the states resources, why can't you use your own intellect, connections and other resources to exploit those resources in your State Enugu and employ these "teeming unemployed" people in the state. Am sure your kind is what the state really needs. To bring home the bacon. If you haven't got the news yet. Here it is. Governments do not produce jobs but enabling environment for people like spyder to prosper

@ Ops, do you have a faint idea of Macro Economics. I guess nay. National economics is not measured based on PPP but on real GDP (monetary value of goods produced and earn in a year) . And for ur info, the value of US economy is almost double that of China as at date. Yes, almost double. What PPP is saying is that assuming the goods are produced and sold under same price regime nd condition, what will the comparison be across the world. I believer I don't need to tell u that workers in the US and PRC earn different wages, are subjected to different conditions. Also the exchange value of the USD is far greater than the Chinese currency. In reality, it will take the next 50yrs for Chinese economy to be worth the US economy as at today if the US economy stagnate while China grow @ 6.3%. As at Q3 2014 the Chinese growth was sub 3%. Railway Contract Create 200,000 Jobs for Nigerians
05 Dec 2014
John Iwori About 200, 000 Nigerians will be engaged in the execution of the multi-billion naira railway contract awarded to China Railway Construction Corporation.

The local jobs openings in the execution of the project are expected to reduce the high number of unemployed persons presently roaming the streets for non-existent jobs.

THISDAY checks revealed that the engagement of Nigerians in the execution of the multibillion naira project was meant to fulfill some of the provisions of the Local Content Act as the Chinese firm do not want to jeopardise its chances in future contract pursuits.

Sources said the firm initially rebuffed attempts to engage Nigerians until they were made to understand the grave implications going by the provisions of the Local Content Act.

The railway contract is for the construction of a fresh coastal railway from Nigeria’s commercial nerve to the capital of the Cross River State capital, Calabar. On completion, the coastal railway is expected to serve as an alternative link between the Western part of the country and the East.

The railway, which will connect many villages and towns in the Western and Eastern parts of the country, stretches for 1,402 kilometres.
According to Xinhua, China Railway Construction Corp had signed a deal worth nearly $12 billion with Nigeria to build a railway along the coastal part of the country.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has said it and will enhance port service delivery by using the railway in cargo movement across the country.

The Port Manager, Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa, Malam Nasir Mohammed who stated this in Lagos explained that the use of water, road and railway transportation was imperative for efficient cargo movement.

“The success of any port, especially our Nigerian ports, must be dependent on three angles. The water angle and the road angle, of course the road angle divided on the trucks and the railway. For Lagos port, we are trying to harness all the three. We already have an existing road angle through which we move cargoes including containers and other general cargo that leaves Lagos ports,” he said.
He stated that an existing rail track in the LPC terminated directly in Kaduna and Kano and enabled the inland container depot in Kano to move some boxes.

He, however, said with increased number of wagons, the weekly movement to Kano would be more frequent.
He said: “We are also beginning to look towards using the waterways to move cargo. We want to start engaging some stakeholders in discussions in such a way to see the possibility of using our extensive waterways to move cargo, not just within Lagos itself but maybe out of Lagos. It is something that can be used, because it’s being used in some other parts of the world much more seriously in such a way that you do not even see boxes. You do not even see containers on the roads.”

Foreign AffairsIt’s Official: America Is Now No. 2 by kmariko(op): 5:34am On Dec 05, 2014
It’s official: America is now No. 2
.
Hang on to your hats, America.
And throw away that big, fat styrofoam finger while you’re about it.

There’s no easy way to say this, so I’ll just say it: We’re no longer No. 1. Today, we’re No. 2. Yes, it’s official. The Chinese economy just overtook the United States economy to become the largest in the world. For the first time since Ulysses S. Grant was president, America is not the leading economic power on the planet.

It just happened — and almost nobody noticed.

The International Monetary Fund recently released the latest numbers for the world economy. And when you measure national economic output in “real” terms of goods and services, China will this year produce $17.6 trillion — compared with $17.4 trillion for the U.S.A.

As recently as 2000, we produced nearly three times as much as the Chinese.

To put the numbers slightly differently, China now accounts for 16.5% of the global economy when measured in real purchasing-power terms, compared with 16.3% for the U.S.

This latest economic earthquake follows the development last year when China surpassed the U.S. for the first time in terms of global trade.

I first reported on this looming development over two years ago, but the moment came sooner than I or anyone else had predicted. China’s recent decision to bring gross domestic product calculations in line with international standards has revealed activity that had previously gone uncounted.

These calculations are based on a well-established and widely used economic measure known as purchasing-power parity (or PPP), which measures the actual output as opposed to fluctuations in exchange rates. So a Starbucks venti Frappucino served in Beijing counts the same as a venti Frappucino served in Minneapolis, regardless of what happens to be going on among foreign-exchange traders.

PPP is the real way of comparing economies. It is one reported by the IMF and was, for example, the one used by McKinsey & Co. consultants back in the 1990s when they undertook a study of economic productivity on behalf of the British government.

[Get the Latest Market Data and News with the Yahoo Finance App]

Yes, when you look at mere international exchange rates, the U.S. economy remains bigger than that of China, allegedly by almost 70%. But such measures, although they are widely followed, are largely meaningless. Does the U.S. economy really shrink if the dollar falls 10% on international currency markets? Does the recent plunge in the yen mean the Japanese economy is vanishing before our eyes?

Back in 2012, when I first reported on these figures, the IMF tried to challenge the importance of PPP. I was not surprised. It is not in anyone’s interest at the IMF that people in the Western world start focusing too much on the sheer extent of China’s power. But the PPP data come from the IMF, not from me. And it is noteworthy that when the IMF’s official World Economic Outlook compares countries by their share of world output, it does so using PPP.

Yes, all statistics are open to various quibbles. It is perfectly possible China’s latest numbers overstate output — or understate them. That may also be true of U.S. GDP figures. But the IMF data are the best we have.

Make no mistake: This is a geopolitical earthquake with a high reading on the Richter scale. Throughout history, political and military power have always depended on economic power. Britain was the workshop of the world before she ruled the waves. And it was Britain’s relative economic decline that preceded the collapse of her power.

And it was a similar story with previous hegemonic powers such as France and Spain.

This will not change anything tomorrow or next week, but it will change almost everything in the longer term. We have lived in a world dominated by the U.S. since at least 1945 and, in many ways, since the late 19th century. And we have lived for 200 years — since the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 — in a world dominated by two reasonably democratic, constitutional countries in Great Britain and the U.S.A. For all their flaws, the two countries have been in the vanguard worldwide in terms of civil liberties, democratic processes and constitutional rights.

New pay TV, African Cable Television berths

December 2, 2014 | Filed under: Brands & Advertising | Author: Editor

African Cable Television (ACTV), a Nigerian-owned multi-media company that offers a Direct to Home (DTH) pay-TV, has entered the Nigerian broadcast industry with determination to push its way into the pay-TV market

The ACTV, pronounced ‘Active,’ is poised to offer both local and international and multi-media entertainment to customers in Nigeria.

With a wide range of channels in four distinct packages, ACTV says it shall make all its channels accessible to all subscribers who sign up to the service between now and December 31, under a promotion subscription package for a period of one month.

Unveiling the new TV in Lagos, Godfrey Orkeh, managing director/CEO, ACTV says the station is poised to offer to subscribers an enhanced consumer TV experience, providing them easy access to high definition channels, featuring music, movies, sports, lifestyle, fashion, children entertainment, religion and a whole lot more.

According to him, ACTV will be offering four packages that include ACTV Prime, ACTV Family, ACTV Family Max and ACTV Premium, and customers will spend the end of the year season with a choice of TV channels that address the needs of every member of the family and friends.

“We have our own channels – Rana for Hausa entertainment programming, Ibile for Yoruba entertainment programming, Oji for Igbo entertainment programming, and for the first time in Africa, an exclusive pidgin channel Area TV. In other words, we have something for everyone. That is why we say to our customers, ‘Its your world.’ We have no doubt that our customers will be delighted by this mix,” Orkeh says.

He further reveals that the vision of the pay-TV is to be a Direct-to-Home TV operator that is renowned for offering quality entertainment content and a broad spectrum of choice offerings to customers.

“With the launch of ACTV today, we are saying to Nigeria that we are committed to ensuring that we provide value to everyone and we keep delivering value now and in the future,” according to him.

Joseph Chitanta, vice president/chief operating officer, ACTV, says that providing all customers with exceptional customer service, decoders that integrate state-of-the-art technologies including high definition TV, PVR and pause-TV coupled with TV programming will not only increase their entertainment experience, but significantly save them time by providing them with programmes that address their needs.

PoliticsNigeria, Most Admired African Nation In Spite Of Criticisms by kmariko(op): 4:38am On Dec 05, 2014
Nigeria, most admired African nation in spite of criticisms

In spite of constant bashing Nigeria receives from its citizens at home and show of apparent cynicism and doubts on its potentials, the country has emerged as the most admired African nation in a survey by African Business magazine in partnership with Brand Africa, Brand Finance Africa and TNS.

The report, which listed 100 most admired and valuable brands in Africa, notes that Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa topped the most admired African nations mentioned spontaneously by Africans.

The report says the 2014 Brand Africa 100 is based on a survey among a representative sample of eight countries, covering the major sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) regions to establish the base top 100 most admired brands. These countries, Ghana and Nigeria (West Africa; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda (East Africa); DRC (Central Africa), and Mozambique and South Africa (Southern Africa).

Collectively, these countries represent 51 percent (477m) of SSA population and 67 percent ($1,065trn) of Africa’s GDP. Their countries’ brands are also often the dominant brands with a dominant influence and consumer base within their regions.

Presently, Nigeria has the highest population in Africa, and the recent re-basing of the economy ranked it the largest economy in Africa. Nigerian economy in 2013 received a total of $21 billion of foreign currency remittances out of $32 billion remittances into Africa.

In the report, pan-African telecoms giant, MTN, topped the African list as the most valuable and most admired African brand.

This was contained in a ranking of the most admired and most valuable brands in SSA by African Business magazine in partnership with Brand Africa, Brand Finance Africa and TNS.

At $5.4 billion, MTN is the only African brand valued over a billion dollars. Apple, at $105 billion replaced Samsung as the most valuable non-African brand, while Coca Cola retained its position as the most admired non-African brand in Africa. Coca Cola toppled MTN as the overall most admired brand in Africa.

The most admired regional brands are MTN (Southern Africa), Glo (West Africa), Tusker (East Africa) and Marsavco (Central Africa). The most valuable regional brands are MTN (Southern Africa), Dangote Industries (West Africa), Safaricom (East Africa), and Marsavco (Central Africa).

The report says non-African brands have continued to set the pace, commanding 77 of the 100 entries in the most admired brands and 99 percent of the most valuable brands ranking. While African brands have retained a similar number of brands among the most admired (23), African brands have not lost any value year to year ($11bn), as their brands have not gained any market share globally and their worth has declined in relative terms (from 2% of total value in 2013 to only 1%).

South Africa, with 11 of the 23 African brands, remains the most dominant branding nation, accounting for 91 percent of the value of the brands. Kenya at 5 percent and Nigeria at 3 percent round off the top three, which make up 99 percent of the value of African brands.

Established in 2011, Brand Africa 100 measures and ranks the brands that consumers admire and their corresponding value.

Why Nigeria cancelled US military training – FG

on December 05, 2014 / in News 12:46 am

By Caleb Ayansina

ABUJA—The Federal Government, yesterday, gave reason for the cancellation of the training of Nigerian soldiers by American security experts, attributing it to logistic problem.

The U.S. Government, through its Embassy in Abuja on Monday said in a statement that “At the request of the Nigerian government, the United States will discontinue its training of a Nigerian Army battalion.”

But Nigerian government explained that it did not cancel the training, but that the condition placed down by US government was not healthy for the security of lives and property of its citizens, particularly those in the north east region.

The conditions, according to it, include withdrawing of some military equipment from the battle field, so that the American could use them to train the soldiers.

The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, who stated this during a routine briefing on security situation in the country, in Abuja, said the government would not expose its citizens at the mercy of insurgents because it wants to train its solders.

However, Omeri maintained that the two countries were not at variance as being insinuated by some people in the country. “Nigeria and America have strong military relation till date. It’s still ongoing and strong,” he said, disclosing that Nigerian soldiers had concluded two phases of the training out of the three.

Omeri explained that the third phase had to do with logistical components which the Americas did not provide but instead relied on Nigerian Military equipments, which was currently in use in the troubled states.

Allowing the states to chose their local governments would provide an avenue where friction between differing cultures can be and will be ameliorated. Here states will create local government or governance according to the prevailing cultural values in that area. The created local governments will be left to their own device on how they run their lives.

The difference to me still remains the people in this structures. These are the people that will enact policies that will eradicate corruption and move the economy. But these people (legislators) are corrupt themselves and their nefarious activities of enriching themselves at the detriment of the nations economy thrives only in a corrupt ridden society.
That's exactly the point. Western ,African and Asian cultures are different. What the west call corruption in say our cultural setting e.g Dash is Tip in there's or omiage in some Asian countries but all have different connotations. We should not have used the western institutional ideas as a template for ours as theirs evolved from their cultural way of living. Japan evolved through their cultural lifestyle.
We are not and have no relationship with Western culture besides their historical imposition.
Still that political structural deficit we have and the attendant problems is reliance and use of Western political culture.

You will agree with me that the Bill is a major game changer that will instil the needed structure in the system

Secondly is the subsidy issue where the same law makers are being bribed to truncate the ruling( otedola and farook).

Its quite agreeable that structures when properly imposed will eradicate corruption in the system. However the polices for instituting these structures will be enacted by the same set of corrupt, egocentric, pot-bellied, gate scalers in the house of assembly that got to that seat through electoral malpractice.

So corruption presupposes all of them.
But it is the political structure that first created the assembly you accuse of being corrupt. If the structure of the polity had shifted some of the responsibilities of the assembly as regards the PIB for example to the original "communities" it is well expected that the community will put themselves first before the companies... Because they the communities do also have profit motives as the bribing oil companies

Not all our reserve that should be used.

10% of $30b is equals to $3b

This can help

1) convert over 20,000sqkm of our land into agricultural fields generating so much raw materials that can crash the cost of doing agro-allied businesses thereby crashing the price of their finished products which will help reduce the amount of money leaving peoples pockets.

2) tap our other natural resources and process them.

3) produce/manufacture the products we import.
But these things costs more than 3 billion dollars.

Personally, Nigeria DOES NOT HAVE, issues with
a. Corruption
b.infrastructure deficit
c. Renters or bottle feeding economy
d.hunger
e.security.
f.bad leadership

What this great country has is structural deficit in the way the polity is made to function.
Create a uniquely Nigerian political structure that encompasses our varying cultures ( both political and economical) without copying other nation's system and watch these so-called problems fade away.

Heres what what this wonderful lady wrote of one of our fallen Heros

"‘O Allaah, forgive and have mercy upon him, excuse him and pardon him, and make honorable his reception. Expand, his entry, and cleanse him with water, snow, and ice, and purify him of sin as a white robe is purified of filth. Exchange his home for a better home, and his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Admit him into the Garden, protect him from the punishment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.’"

And Here what other Nairalanders wrote about her including yours sincerely ( a disclaimer ),

Nafeesa. Your calm, blow-by-blow description of a war raging all around you is proof enough that you are blessed with nerves of steel, which I would not be surprised to hear developed during and after military training you underwent at some point.

With Nairaland's intrepid combat reporter, Sirius Black now offline in self-exile from the job of writing war dispatches, your dispassionate front-line accounts fill a huge information void that was left when Sirius Black fell silent. Even more remarkable to me than the composed vividness of your first-person accounts describing street battles, is the very fact that you have not as yet exercised your option to simply pack up and board the next flight to safety within or without Nigeria, before airports close to civilians and trap you amid the mayhem.

I wish you the very best in the perilous place that you evidently reside, Nafeesa, but I also wish to advise that you keep your passport and other vitals packed and ready for hurried departure, if word comes on short notice that the chit has hit the fan over there, and the time is at hand to raise dust and leave in a hurry.

Keep your head down, fine woman, and, if you MUST remain there, keep us updated as history unfolds, to the best of your ability.

PoliticsLagos State Borrows 16 Million Dollars For 32 Fire Trucks. by kmariko(op):
The Lagos State Government has taken delivery of 32 American fire-fighting vehicles which were procured with a loan from the Import-Export Bank (Ex-Im Bank) of the United States.

The board of the Ex-Im Bank had authorised a $15.7 million direct loan to the state government of Lagos, last year, to underwrite the purchase of the 32 American fire-fighting vehicles manufactured by W.S. Darley & Co. (Darley) of Itasca, Ill. Maintenance and training of firemenalso come along with the deal.

“Additionally, the financing , which targets one of our nine key markets, ensures the government of Lagos can respond efficiently and effectively to emergency situations,” an Ex-Im official had said , at the approval of the loan.

Handing over the vehicles to the Lagos State Fire and Safety Services yesterday, Governor Fashola said the undertaking was part of efforts to further mitigate huge losses arising from fire outbreaks in Lagos, and that the state government is planning to establish a fire academy where fire service men and youths interested in the profession will be trained and equipped for the job.

Lagos State Fire Service responded to 363 fire incidents during the first quarter of this year alone, while experts have said that population and businesses in the state were growing faster than the capacity of the fire service to deliver effective service.

Lagos is home to an estimated 21 million people. Insurance companies likewise paid a total sum of N23.5bn as claims in four major flood and fire disasters recorded in some parts of the country in the last four years.

Experts have said over the years, that persons and properties in the country are grossly under-insured.

The governor of Lagos had declared that the expansion and re-equipping of the fire service is an urgent matter of state security.

Fashola said having equipped the state fire service, “we are moving to the next phase to establish a fire academy to train youths who want to take to fire fighting as a profession.” He was, however, not specific and detailed, regarding when the academy would take off, but assured the government was on it.

Meanwhile, all the fire trucks handed over are fitted with storage tanks for water, foam and compressed air. The trucks are to make use of the latest auto Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) designed to reduce the volume of water needed to fight fire.

They are manufactured by Messrs W.S Darley of Itasca Illinois, a firm said to have been in business since 1908 as fire fighting/equipment manufacturer for United States military and over 100 countries. Part of the Lagos State agreement with the firm, aside manufacturing the firefighting equipment, is the maintenance and comprehensive training of the state firemen.

Fashola also warned against disrupting the operations of fire fighters in the event of fire outbreak, adding that there are about 570 trained emergency first responders, spread across all the local government areas across the state and should be allowed to take charge of any emergency situation that may arise.

“As we move into the dry season, the risk of fire incident is higher and I want to advise everyone, if you have not taken a fire policy, go and do so, because no matter how hard we try, accidents will happen and insurance can help to mitigate the devastation.

“I also want to appeal that as I hope we do not have any need for this vehicles, when the need for them arises, I want to appeal to us to give way and grant access to these our highly trained and well equipped firefighting personnel. If we block access to where the fire is, we get in the way of their jobs.

“We want to appeal that whenever this happens; we have to give way to them and assist them to get to the scene of the incident. In every local government, we have at least 10 fire service emergency responders that we have trained. Across Lagos, there are 570 young men and women working with Lagos State Emergency Management Agency as first responders.”

The governor said the idea to improve on the state’s ability to respond to emergency started years back, adding that the first thing that was done was to put street signs across the state so that an incident scene can easily be identified.

Corruption will be better checked when people actually feel the direct impact of government cost. Just imagine 40 million Nigerians withdrawing monies from their bank accounts and paying taxes directly to FIRS yearly. Both the quality of our civil service and the people we elect will change overnight.
Corruption can be curtailed considerably only when the polity is restructured in such a way to hold citizens accountable for their actions or in actions including non tax payment.

The solution is right there in the just concluded national conference. The present turmoil in the polity present a good opportunity for the president to implement it.
1. Use all the "constitional" means at his disposal to force the speaker out and present a friendly one who will work on the "needful" to get a referendum in the constitution.
2. Get a referendum going on the need for either passing and adopting the conference or call for a new constitution.
The conference did a lot cut the government and governance cost.

Where did they get their facts from that the US shale oil boom won't last? The us has an estimate 4.8 trillion barrels of shale oil deposits so tell me how that's gona deplete so soon? The reason why us is still buying saudi's crude oil is because the quality is lower than the one produced in nigeria, hence they prefer buying low quality oil at a cheap price. Nigeria has stopped selling crude oil to the us since the beginning of this year. So basically the petrol we getting is what we send to us to refine and send back at a high price. Just like in the case of cocoa in other african countries.
Crude oil is not just about petrol or gasoline for transportation. Virtually every industrial activity has connection to crude oil. And the different grades of crude supplies varying needs of the industry. In other words there is nothing like a "high or low" quality crude. What matters is the product that can be obtained from it.

Another problem for Nigeria is that our competitors and customers are on an import substitution strategy. The US is not interested in exports of oil and gas even though they have started competing with us in LNG. What they want is a strategy to add value typically to petrochemical and for the first time in years, refineries in Texas have been having cheaper raw material coming from just next door the the Dakota's and Utah.
So Nigeria is competing with people who don't have to put oil on tankers to send abroad to the customers. Logistics cost savings alone will keeps the price differentials interesting. Advanced economies like Russia and US competing in the oil sector is very bad for us. Putin himself has started intense economic diplomacy this week to Turkey and India.
Sorry to disagree the reason why Cheniere energy exploded from 2 dollar to 93 dollar per share just a few years was their completion of the first gas export terminal in Lousiana. LNg usage round the world is expected to grow in the next decade driven by the clean energy companies.

So maybe OPEC does still matter. After deciding to keep its production levels unchanged at 30 million barrels a day and triggering Friday’s nearly 10 percent selloff, the cartel proved it can still cause huge swings in oil prices‐even if it’s in the opposite direction that most of its members wanted to see.

Iran, Iraq, Libya, and Venezuela were all hoping for a cut of at least 1 million barrels to keep prices from going lower. Citibank (C) analysts estimate that the world is producing about 700,000 barrels a day more than total demand requires. With international oil prices below $70 for the first time since 2010, most OPEC member countries will have trouble keeping their budget deficits in check. According to an estimate by Goldman Sachs (GS) last month, only Kuwait, the UAE, and Qatar are safe below $70.

OPEC’s idea is to try to knock out U.S. shale producers by driving prices lower than they can afford. That way Saudi Arabia, the cartel’s biggest exporter, can keep its market share in the U.S. But the damage to its fellow oil exporters could be severe. In Russia, for example, the ruble is plummeting. Iraq is already having trouble fighting ISIS, and lower oil prices won’t help. Libya is in chaos. Venezuela’s economy, already on life support, depends on oil for 95 percent of its export revenue. Iran’s oil minister on Friday told Bloomberg News that he has doubts the strategy will even work: “There’s no fact or figure to say that shale production will definitely decrease,” he said.

Story: At OPEC Meeting, Saudi Arabia Stares Down Texas and North Dakota

U.S. production probably will decrease, even if it takes a while. At $65 a barrel, it’s unlikely the U.S. can keep up its record-setting pace of expanding oil production. U.S. oil has jumped from about 5 million barrels a day in 2008 to more than 9 million. Even before OPEC’s decision, forecasters were calling for a slowdown. Last May, for instance, the Energy Information Agency forecast that total U.S. production would peak just shy of 10 million barrels per day before 2020.
