Education / Nigerian Parents Pay For Their Kids To Learn British Accent by KNEO777: 6:55am On Feb 27, 2018
Some parents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have admitted that they pay extra fees for their children to learn how to speak with British accent.

The parents, who spoke in separate interviews with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), gave several reasons why they felt having British accent would help the children, with some regarding it as proper education.
Investigations in schools around Garki, Gwarimpa, Wuse, Asokoro and Maitama in FCT revealed that the teaching of British accent had been included in the curriculum.

The classes, developed to satisfy parents, were named ‘Phonics’, ‘Elocution’, ‘Enunciation’ and ‘Diction.

These classes were most times separated from the normal English and Literature lessons commonly found in schools and were allocated special times in the timetable.

Classes in the schools go for cumulative prices between N10,000 and N25,000 per term, added to the standard school fees.

Some schools visited by NAN said such classes were optional but pressure from some parents was gradually making it popular.

According to some parents, having their children speak in British accent gives them a feeling that they are receiving proper formal education; unlike the standard they (parents) had in their time.

They said since English originated from Britain, it was important that children learned to speak it in the proper accent, adding that it would help the children to relate better with people abroad.

Mrs Christina Ayuba, a businesswoman with four children said she was glad that her children were being taught British accent in school.

She said although she did not fully understand the way the children speak lately, she was proud that they speak that way, as it made her feel like she was giving them the best education.

“I feel the pride of a parent when my children go to Church and people envy the way they speak smartly, at least I won’t be bothered if they go abroad.

“They will be able to interact with white people and understand them when they talk. It is something every parent should pay for to improve the children’s English language.”

Another parent, Mr Oyietari Oboro, an engineer with two children told NAN that he hired a tutor to teach his children the accent at home; in addition to lessons they receive in school.

He added that it was a necessary skill as the world was going global and people needed to be armed with the right conversational skills; noting that British accent had become an added advantage.

“We did not have these kind of lessons growing up and it affected us. When you hear people speaking with British accent, you start to feel your grammar isn’t correct.

“We don’t want our children to suffer these things and so these lessons are important as part of equipping them for the future.

“Most of us do not want our children to stay in this country for long and also do not want them to feel left out when they go abroad.”

The practice led to a surge in private ‘diction’ tutors who teach children in their homes or act as resource persons to schools.

Some of the tutors told NAN that they charge between N15,000 and N30,000 per month, depending on the intensity of the lessons.

Mr Charles Ajobi, a tutor, said he started the business in 2017 after a friend told him that his British accent could fetch him money.
He works as a private tutor in homes and also acts as resource person in schools, after interaction with other tutors led him to develop a complete course curriculum.

He said:

“parents pay a lot and teaching this accent is the thriving business in Abuja now. The craze is very high and it is almost like competition.

“Some of these children have poor grammatical structure and you have to work on that before you start to teach the accent properly,” Ajobi added.

However, some other parents were against the teaching of British accent to children; saying it was another form of neo-colonialism and now a status thing among parents.
They insisted that learning proper grammar was essential “and not English flavours.”

Mrs Vera Alikan, a mother of two, said she was contented with proper English taught to her children and would not force them to take on any accent.
She added that it was preferable for children to learn foreign languages rather than accent.

“My children are normal and speak good English without an accent and I am okay with it. The situation is alarming as parents are competing with it, even in Churches.
“You hear some parents bragging that their children can speak in British accent, to them, education is complete.

“It just shows that our mentality is still very low in this part of the world. I see it as inferiority complex.”

Mrs Abiola Kayode-Apampa, an Educationist with over 20 years experience and a school administrator, said the trend had heightened as parents continued to pressurise schools on British accent lessons.

She said the trend was creating more room for inferiority complex among children and parents who could not afford the extra charge.
“parents encourage the teaching of British accent and most schools have to take this into consideration so as to maintain the relationship.

“However, teaching should be focused on imbibing the right grammatical structure so the students can speak well.

“Most schools are trying to copy and pander to pressure, without focusing on impacting real knowledge that the children can become better with,” Kayode-Apampa said.

“an accent could be cool but it was not a yardstick for grading the intelligence of a child as erroneously done today by parents and schools.”

Kayode-Apampa hoped that educational priorities should be set straight “so that things like accent and ‘cosmetic teaching’ do not take over proper academics.”

Career / Dapchi Girls: Army And Police Fight Dirty To Shift Blame by KNEO777: 6:36am On Feb 27, 2018
The army and the police yesterday disagreed over who should carry the can for the February 19 abduction of 110 Dapchi schoolgirls.

The Army said it “formally” handed over security in Dapchi to the police as its men moved to another operation, but the police said there was no such handover.

The army dismissed as “misleading”,the  alleged withdrawal of troops to aid the abduction of the Government Girls Science Technical College students in Dapchi, Yobe State.

Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole, Col. Onyeama Nwachukwu, in a statement in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, said the allegation against the military “is not only unfortunate, but also very far from the truth”.

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Geidam had reportedly alleged that the withdrawal of the troops from the area was responsible for the attack and abduction of female students of the college.

Col. Nwachukwu said Dapchi town was handed over to the police following the return of peace and civil authority in the area.

“Contrary to the comments credited to Governor Ibrahim Geidam, troops earlier deployed in Dapchi were redeployed to reinforce Kanama following attacks on troops’ location at the Nigerian – Nigerien border.

“This is on the premise that Dapchi has been relatively calm and peaceful, and the security of Dapchi was formally handed over to the Nigeria Police Division located in the town.

“Therefore, troops’ redeployment was done in tandem with the exigencies of operation as against the misconstrued notion.

“Several local councils and communities, hitherto, under siege by the insurgents were liberated by troops who continue to trail and decimate remnants of the insurgents in the hinterlands, the security of such liberated communities and towns fall in the hands of the sister security agencies”.

Col. Nwachukwu noted that the Theatre Command would not be joined in the blame game, but rather remained committed to ensuring successful implementation of the counter-insurgency operation in the North-East.

He explained that the recent dislodgement and further decimation of the insurgents from their enclaves in the Sambisa forest and the Lake Chad region was a clear testimony of the effective operations against the insurgents.

“Given all these efforts, it is very astonishing and shocking that such unfortunate comment and allegation is being touted against the loyal and dedicated troops of Operation Lafiya Dole”.

“We assure parents, government, the good people of Yobe and indeed, members of the public that we will not rest on our oars in the search and rescue of the abducted school girls and any other persons held captive by the terrorists,’’ he said.

But Police Commissioner in Yobe State, Sunmonu Abdumalik in a statement said:

“The statement by the Military of formal handing over of Dapchi town to the Nigeria Police Division in Dapchi is not correct and untrue, as there was no time that the military informed the Police of their withdrawal, consult or handed over their locations in Dapchi town to the Police.

“The whole of Yobe State is still under Security Emergency which the Police, the Military and other security agencies are battling to ensure lasting peace.

“Members of the public in Yobe State are implored to disregard and discountenance this claim that the Military formally handed the security of Dapchi town to the Nigeria Police as untrue, unfounded and misleading.

“The Yobe State Police Command will continue to cooperate with other security agencies in ensuring safety and protection of lives and property of people of Yobe State.”

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday promised that his administration will do its all to rescue all Nigerians abducted by terrorists.

He gave the assurance while addressing the recently freed abductees taken by terrorists in Borno State, including 10 girls and three lecturers.

The President said:

“While government was fully aware of the expectations of your families and the general public for your immediate freedom, the path to your freedom was painstaking and protracted. This was because the group responsible for your abduction were not only different but based in different locations that if not properly handled could result in dire consequences.

“I thank all the various security agencies for their professionalism throughout this process, as well as other agencies of government, sister nations in the Lake Chad region, the International Committee of the Red Cross who have contributed to this feat of bringing you all home safely.

“While thanking the security agencies and all those who facilitated this, let me clearly reiterate the resolve of this administration to ensure all persons abducted by the insurgents are rescued or released safely. This is especially against the backdrop of the recent incident where another group of girls were abducted on the 19th from Government Science and Technical Girls College, Dapchi, Yobe State.”

According to Buhari, he has already directed all security agencies to ensure the safety of schools and students and safe return of the abducted girls to their families.

He added:

“Government remains unrelenting towards rescuing all those abducted. Government will also work closely with all stakeholders, especially the United Nations and other donor agencies, voluntary organisations towards rehabilitating and resettling all those displaced as a result of all these conflicts, to quicken resumption of meaningful social economic activities.

“I remain very mindful of the pains and injury collectively metted out by the insurgents and we will ensure that government does not leave any stone unturned to degrade and contain these insurgents and ensure that complete peace returns to our land.

“Once again, I’m pleased to see that all of you are now free and will soon join your loved ones as well as be fully integrated back into the society.

“Nigerians sympathise with you on your ordeal and wish you welcome back to your families and friends.

“And I suppose the NYSC should give a certificate of discharge to the person that spent the remaining of her service somewhere else (with abductors).”

“This administration has been unrelenting in your rescue and freedom from your captors several months ago. I was terribly saddened by the incident of the abduction of June 20th, last year and the brutal killing of six others on the spot along Damboa Road while heading for the burial of a close one in Askira Uba Local Government of Borno State.

“The second was the July 26th, last year of the abduction of three university staff who were on official mission to explore the the possibility of the exploration of oil at the Lake Chad Basin.

“I can assure that apart from your family members, every peace-loving Nigerian prayed for your safety and wished for your early release from the hold of your abductors.

“Your rescue on the 10th of February this year was a very huge relief to me personally as well as to all Nigerians.

“Let me say that this government treasures all the human lives, particularly that of its citizens, and following your abductions, the security agencies were directed by me to do everything humanly possible to ensure the safe release of every one of you and other persons under hold of the insurgents.”

The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, listed the names of the abductees, who were brought to the President on Monday, to include Jummai Ibrahim, who was serving her NYSC at the time of her abduction, Esther Wazari Kwasina and Amina Adams Gomdiya, Gloria Bulus, Paulina Amos, Tani Audu, and a final year student in the University of Maiduguri, Fustina.

He told the President that his organization chose the path of negotiation because it was considered as the safest.

“Because any forceful attempt to rescue the victims could endanger their lives. These negotiations took several months and the Department of State Services with support of the external elements of the group in diaspora and support from friendly countries and liaising with International Committee of the Red Cross made the rescue possible.”

Daura said that the process was slow due to the problem of dealing with two groups based in different locations at the same time.

According to him, the negotiations took place mostly outside the country, but they were finalised in the theater of operations.

He said:

“The negotiations were mainly centered on an attempt at conflict mitigation which include the fate of arrested members of the insurgent groups, especially, accepting to free by government those found not to be culpable in any criminal action. Also, possible cessation of hostilities, especially the attacks with IEDs on innocent civilians, worship centers, schools and other public places in return for temporary stoppage of air strikes by helicopter gunships.

“Lastly, the negotiation was also centered on the possibility of granting amnesty to those willing to surrender and ready to lay down their arms by the federal government.” he said.

Politics / EFCC Rejects Former First Lady Patience Jonathan’s Out-of-court Settlement Offer by KNEO777: 10:46am On Feb 19, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC has rejected an appeal by former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, to settle out of court the brewing dispute over the strange payment of $11,489,069.03 into her domiciliary accounts. Mrs Jonathan through her counsel approached the antigraft agency for an out of court settlement.

The Nation reports that EFCC has however turned down her request and has asked her to appear before a court by entering into a plea bargain in line with the laws of the land. The agency said it would only accept a plea bargain in which the court is carried along.

Investigations by EFCC showed that some persons made strange depoits into the domiciliary account of the former first lady while she and her husband were in power. EFCC detectives have not been able to trace about 29 of the 31 individuals and companies which made the controversial deposits.

A source in the antigraft agency who spoke on condition of anonymity said that an out-of-court settlement suggests that there is a dispute between two parties.

“We have considered the January 30, 2018 letter by Dame (Mrs.) Ibifaka Patience Jonathan; we are of the opinion that her offer of out-of-court settlement is strange and confounding as if there is a dispute between her and the EFCC. We are certainly rejecting the offer from the ex-First Lady because the EFCC does not engage in such a deal. But we prefer the ex-First Lady approaching a court for plea bargain in line with the relevant laws if she is ready to settle all issues.

The terms of the plea bargain will be open to all parties before the court. I think she should emulate other high profile suspects who went to the court for plea bargain. We are ready to apply the laws in the interest of justice for all. We won’t oppose plea bargain.”

The source said the EFCC would soon make its position known to Mrs Jonathan counsel. “As an officer in the Temple of Justice, we know that the respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN) will guide the ex-First Lady accordingly,” he said.

According to reports, BSU Students hit the streets of Makurdi, the Benue State capital to protest their being chased out of school by the University Management because of failure to pay school fees, which they say is a consequence of non payment of the parents' salaries and pensions by the Governor.

Politics / 'I Will Find To Commit Suicide If I See Nigeria Has No Hope: Obasanjo by KNEO777: 1:09pm On Feb 17, 2018
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he will commit suicide once he comes to the conclusion that there is no longer hope for Nigeria.

The former president said this while commissioning some projects executed by Bayelsa state governor, Seriake Dickson, yesterday February 16th.

Responding to a question asked by one of the students in a school he commissioned, Obasanjo said :

If I believe that Nigeria has no hope, I will find a way of committing suicide immediately. Then what am I living for?

I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria. Nigeria has hope. There are many things that we should have done that we have not done as we should have done them. There is no doubt about that. But that doesn’t mean that Nigeria has no hope. Hope is what drives human beings. If you are a person without hope, you are a person without life.

How can I therefore say Nigeria has no hope? Nigeria has hope. And you are part of the hope of Nigeria. The question you have asked me is a very sensible question and that means with you asking me that type of question it heightens my own conviction that Nigeria has hope.

My generation or the generation before me gave us independence. It doesn’t matter what you think about them. My generation fought for the unity of this country and laid the foundation of democracy.

Then people of governor  Dickson generation should be able to say they built on our foundation. That is how a nation continues to make progress. The governor is doing wonderfully well. Anybody coming after him will do something else. The person will not start building the INA from the scratch.

The academy has already been established. In spite of our difficulties; I came back from Rome last night. Our Ambassador there, who was a kind man, he was in the Navy; he told me that his major problem is that there are 1,600 Nigerians in Italian prisons. That is a problem. But we shouldn’t because of that say there is no hope for Nigeria? No. I will say we have a problem that we have to address and if we don’t address it we are postponing the evil day. That doesn’t mean that Nigeria has no hope.

Never lose hope. Nigeria has great hope because of you; great hope because of what the governor is doing and great hope because I will not keep my mouth shut when I see anything wrong in Nigeria”.

On whether he had regrets in office as the President, Obasanjo said :

“With the knowledge, resources and facilities that I had, was there anything that I did not do? No. If I had more resources, then I think I would have done differently, but with what I had and the resources at my disposal, I would say no, I did all that is humanly possible when I was President. I was not perfect, only God is.

“Also bear in mind that people you work with will make sure you don’t see certain things. Some of them will do everything. What is important is that you should not have a regret. I do not have a regret when I was in government or in any leadership position I have held. No regret”.

Education / JAMB Uncovers Another N83M Fraud In Kano, Edo, Kogi, Gombe And Plateau States by KNEO777: 12:21pm On Feb 17, 2018
Fresh fraud cases have been uncovered in offices of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, totalling N83m in Kano, Edo, Kogi, Gombe and Plateau states.

According to a report by Punch, while the board was investigating N31m misappropriated revenue in Edo and N20m in Kano, it was quizzing officials in Plateau and Gombe over N15m and N10m mismanaged in the states respectively. Also, it was learnt that the examination board was investigating the misappropriation of N7m in its office in Kogi State.

Fabian Benjamin, spokesman of JAMB, who confirmed the figures on Friday, said the board would be diligent in its investigations and would not tolerate corrupt practices from any of its officials. “We will monitor with careful scrutiny how workers handled public funds. We are trying to block all leakages and loopholes,” he said. The medium quoted a source as saying that all the workers of the board found to have been involved in corrupt activities being investigated had been suspended while investigations were ongoing.

“What happened was that we had a panel session in Abuja and most of the state coordinators could not account for how some monies were spent or remitted. The coordinator of Kano State could not account for N20m, while the Edo (office) could not account for N31m. In Plateau State, we are looking at N15m. For Kogi State, we have about N7m that is a source of contention while Gombe office has N10m that is also a source of contention. You can then sum it up and know how much corruption ate deep into some officials. The registrar is frank and thorough about the investigations and he has warned to transfer some of the cases to the police and to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.”

A case of N36m allegedly misappropriated by a clerk at the JAMB office in Makurdi, Benue State, Philomena Chieshe, was recently reported by the media. It was reported that Chieshe had claimed in her statement that a mystery snake sneaked into the accounts office and swallowed the cash. Also, another JAMB worker in Nasarawa State, Labaran Tanko, was reported on Wednesday to be undergoing investigation over a suspected fraud involving N26m.

Tanko had claimed that the N26m, which was the worth of unsold Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination scratch cards, got burnt in his car during an accident while he was on his way to remit the cards at the JAMB office in Abuja. Both Chieshe and Tanko are still under investigation.

Crime / Chinese Man Detained And Assaulted By Customs Officers In Lagos (Photo) by KNEO777: 8:13pm On Feb 14, 2018
A Chinese man identified as Finn has accused the Nigerian Customs officers of illegally detaining and assaulting him.

According to him, the incident took place on February 9th at Mobolaji Bank Anthony, Ikeja.

He said;

On my way to pick up a business partner on Friday 9th of February, at the Customs office area along Mobolaji Bank Anthony, Ikeja; Three customs officers approached our vehicle, which had myself (Chinese), driver (Nigerian) and another passenger (Nigerian) inside. They shouted at the driver to park, while the driver was trying to find a safe space on the road to park, one of the officers charged towards the car angrily, threw a bottle water (which was partially opened) at the driver through the window and the water splashed on everyone in the car.

While the driver was trying to explain himself, the officer lunged forward in an attempt to slap him, yelling at him for not stopping immediately, without even giving him a chance to explain himself. At this point, the driver was defenseless so I decided to step in and address the officers, asking them “what is the crime?” as I didn’t understand what was going on.

In my attempt to defend the driver, the officers got infuriated then shifted the aggression towards me, while justifying their actions and trying to impose their power, ordered us out of the vehicle. We stepped out of the car, at that point the aggression had turned to threat as they threatened to deal with me for speaking up for the driver who is a fellow Nigerian like them.

As the argument got heated up, the officers pounced on me, subdued me and placed handcuffs in my hands, dragging me into their office. At the office, one of the officers approached me gave me several slaps on my face (in the process my eye glasses broke), asking why I was shouting, whether I think I am in my country. They pushed me into their office and threatened to lock me up if I don’t keep quiet. I refused to keep quiet and asked to contact my lawyer since they want to detain me in their custody, but they rebuffed my request.

While I was in their custody, they refused to let my driver and the other passenger into their office. The officers who initially dragged me in later disappeared after a long while of humiliation and detention, another officer who was also in the office pleaded that I be released so as to kill the matter once and for all. I refused and continued to request to speak to my lawyer. I was later un-cuffed and asked to leave.

I finally decided to leave the office after been physically assaulted, verbally abused and illegally detained for no reason and not being able to trace the officers that inflicted all these pains on me got me even more devastated (though I can remember their faces clearly). Additionally, I missed my business meeting for the next day, my glasses were destroyed, got a red-swollen eyes and had to do eye check-up.

Education / JAMB Uncovers Another Missing N26 Million by KNEO777: 10:56am On Feb 14, 2018
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has uncovered another fraud of N26 million allegedly perpetrated by its former Nasarawa State coordinator, simply identified as Tanko.

The development came barely one week after the board uncovered a N36 million fraud allegedly perpetrated by its Benue State sales clerk, Philomena.

Tanko was said to have embezzled the money he generated from the sale of the scratch cards hitherto used by candidates to either gain access to the JAMB website for registration or other services.

JAMB spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, told newsmen in Abuja that the former Nasarawa State coordinator had apologised to the JAMB audit team for his inability to account for the money for unknown reasons.

The officer, in his confessional statement, claimed that the unsold scratch cards were burnt when he was involved in a car crash, even as he failed to account for the ones he sold before a ban was placed on the use of scratch cards in 2016.

JAMB’s head of media said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the police had been invited to assist in recovering money allegedly stolen by its officials in the Abuja headquarters and the state offices.

He said: “In JAMB, we have nothing to hide. We run an open door system, where the public must have unfettered access to information, positive or negative, present or past.

“The fact remains that the officer in question in our Benue office and many others found in similar situations in some other states diverted the funds before the coming of Oloyede.

“But, be that as it may, management is working assiduously to arrest and hand over to the appropriate quarters this snake that swallowed our N36 million and a host of others still in our system.”

According to Delta, the Airbus A330-200 had an issue with one of its two engines. Flight 55 landed safely but five passengers suffered minor injuries during the evacuation while the plane was on the runway.

The passengers evacuated the plane using escape slides which is an unusual occurrence that shows the seriousness of the incident.

Delta's website indicates that the Airbus A330-200 has 234 seats. It has two Pratt & Whitney PW4000 turbofan engines. The engine's manufacturer, Pratt & Whitney, said in a statement that it's working with "authorities to assess the situation."

Romance / Unattractive Women More Likely To Cheat, New Study Suggests by KNEO777: 2:42pm On Feb 13, 2018
A new study suggests that less attractive ladies are more likely to cheat in relationships than attractive women.

US researchers from Florida State University followed 233 newly married couples for three-and-a-half years. They documented intimate details about the couples' relationships, including marital satisfaction, long-term commitment, whether they had engaged in infidelity and if they were still together.

Following the years of study, they discovered that women who considered themselves attractive were far more likely to be faithful. They also found that women who had been promiscuous before getting married were less likely to cheat. In contrast, less-attractive females who had limited sexual experience were more likely to engage in extra-marital entanglements.

Writing in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology lead author Jim McNulty said:

"The most notable predictors of infidelity that varied across sex were own and partner attractiveness.

CC: SEUN
CC: LALASTICLALA

https://www.mojidelano.com/2018/02/unattractive-women-more-likely-to-cheat-new-study-suggests/

"Specifically, own attractiveness was negatively associated with infidelity among women, but not men, suggesting that less attractive women were more likely to engage in infidelity.

"Men were more likely to engage in an infidelity when their partners were less attractive. This latter sex difference is consistent with evidence that partner attractiveness is more important to men than it is to women."

Surprisingly, the researchers found people satisfied with sex in their relationship were more likely to cheat, perhaps suggesting they felt more positive about sex in general and would seek it out regardless of how they felt about their main relationship.

The study also found that people who are less likely to stray are far better at removing their attention quickly from an attractive stranger. Individuals who looked away from pictures of highly attractive people a few hundred milliseconds faster than average were nearly 50 percent less likely to have sex outside marriage.

"People are not necessarily aware of what they're doing or why they're doing it," added Dr McNulty.

"These processes are largely spontaneous and effortless, and they may be somewhat shaped by biology and/or early childhood experiences."

"With the advent of social media, and thus the increased availability of and access to alternative partners, understanding how people avoid the temptation posed by alternative partners may be more relevant than ever to understanding relationships."

Religion / Redeemed Church Zonal Headquarters Sealed By Lagos State Government by KNEO777: 9:18am On Feb 13, 2018
Lagos State Building Control Agency, (LASBCA) officials, have sealed the zonal headquarters of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), under construction in Ajegunle, a hotel in Ikeja and 6 other buildings over the illegal development of structures and for breaking government seal.

Redeemed church zonal headquarters sealed by Lagos Government Lailasnews2

The operation was led by the General Manager, LASBCA, Engr. Olalekan Shodeinde.

Officials of the Lagos State Task Force were on ground to provide security and arrest culprits during the enforcement exercise on Saturday.

Shodeinde told journalists in Lagos that all properties sealed had been sealed up to four times in the past, but that their owners always broke government’s seal to continue their illegal development.

He said,

“This year, we will come hard on defaulters who remove our seals. We will prosecute anybody found on site. Once a building contravenes regulations, anybody found on it will be arrested and prosecuted. To unseal a sealed site is a criminal offence and the penalty is N500,000.”

On why government sealed De-Golden Guest Hotel, the General Manager said the structure was formerly a residential apartment, saying that the owner of the property at one time began renovating the house without a permit, which led to it being sealed earlier.

He said,

“To our surprise, when we came, we saw a hotel, the structure has been converted to a hotel without government approval. We sealed the property, but the owner unsealed it again. That is why we are shutting it down now for illegal conversion.”

Those arrested during the operation were arraigned at the Mobile Court.

They all pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in various sums.

Since they could not perfect their bail conditions, they were taken to prison as their cases had been adjourned to 12th February for the commencement of trial.

Celebrities / "I Don’t Use My Dad’s Influence To Get Things Done Like Davido" – DJ Cuppy by KNEO777: 8:22am On Feb 13, 2018
DJ Cuppy, daughter of billionaire Femi Otedola has revealed that she doesn’t exploit her father’s influence to get things done like Davido does. Most people would believe that since her father is rich and influential, she would always have it easy where others find it very difficult.

But such is not the case all the time for the alluring DJ recently turned performing artiste. During her chat with E-Daily, DJ Cuppy says her dad’s name rarely opens all doors for her though she is the daughter of an oil magnate popularly know.
Her words:

“People have to understand that just because I was born into my family does not mean that it opens all doors, that is everyone’s outside perspective. My inside perspective is just being someone’s child; how can being someone’s child be used against you?

I can walk into a room and before I even open my mouth, everyone has decided, and it’s like you are not giving a young woman a chance to even prove herself.”

She added that unlike Davido, she is not the type who would exploit her father’s influence to get things done.
“The only difference between Davido and I is that he decided to use the influence as an advantage from an early stage.

So David was like I am ‘omo baba olowo’ (OBO), take it or leave it! I’m not that kind of person, he was smart though, because before you can even do anything, he has already told you he is the son of a millionaire.

He did his brand thing well and he’s about that lush life, he lives large and he’s not apologising for who he is,” she said

Few days ago Billionaire daughter, Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola a.k.a DJ Cuppy was the official DJ at the Global Citizen event held in Dakar, she had a session of teaching French president Emmanuel Macron and Senegalese president, Macky Sall how to DJ.

Culture / This Is The Reason Why We Worship Our Cows – Miyetti Allah Coordinator by KNEO777: 9:00pm On Feb 10, 2018
Alhaji Garius Gololo, who is the Coordinator of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Benue State chapter of, has opened up on the reason why his people worship cows.

When the co-ordinator was asked in a chat if it is true that the Fulani herdsmen worship their cows besides God. he responded saying;

“Ah, ah, why won’t you worship what you are gaining from? They worship God, but they depend on their cow.

If you want to marry, it’s from that cow; if you are going to the hospital, it’s from that cow, if you want to eat, it’s from that cow. So, for people to say Fulani worship cows, its clear; they must, because it’s from it they make their living and you should also understand that these people have no other major business than this, so what would you think could come of them if they fail in giving their cows the best attention”

He was asked why the Fulani Herdsmen have not embraced modern technologies to breed their livestock and rather opt for the old system of nomadic cattle breeding. He says:

“Fulani does not need road, they don’t need electricity, and they don’t need a big house. They live with the cow. But now in Nigeria, not only Benue, people are against herdsmen.

In a place like Zamfara, it’s not herdsmen; it is criminals versus criminals. Recently, I was in Zamfara when they fought.

There are no more Fulani herdsmen in Zamfara because they all ran away with the cattle as a result of incessant attacks after the return of a notorious criminal and members of his gang who terrorized them. But whenever anything happens, they say it’s Fulani.

The point is that they are against the Federal Government, not the ordinary Fulani. Because the president is a Fulani and most Nigerians are against him, anything that happens, they say it’s Fulani.”

Education / How Federal Universities Are Covering Up Corruption, Sexual Harassment – SERAP by KNEO777: 9:47am On Feb 09, 2018
A new report by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has revealed how several allegations of corruption in federal universities are neither thoroughly investigated nor the culprits punished.

Some of the allegations listed in the report include unfair allocation of grades, contract inflation, truncation of staff’s salary on the payroll, employment of unqualified staff, and the certificate scandal saga of Dino Melaye, a serving senator.

Other instances are allegations of examination malpractices, sexual harassment, issuance of results to expelled students to graduate, and sales of university certificates for undeserving persons.

The report titled ‘Stealing the future: How federal universities in Nigeria have been stripped apart by corruption’ says, “impunity for corruption in the university system has negatively affected the governance of federal universities and the quality of education received by the students.”

The 58-page report, launched in Lagos on Thursday with the support of the MacArthur Foundation, was presented to the media by Bolajoko Dixon-Ogbechi, an Associate Professor of Business Administration and Marketing, Faculty of Business Administration, at the University of Lagos.

“Most of the time, lecturers miss classes and they never get punished,” Mrs. Dixon-Ogbechi said.

“Getting a job in the universities is not the question of merit but of connections. Ghost workers syndrome is a problem in the universities.”

According to the report, “There have been cases where staff have used their official status to prevent the administration of justice in their units/departments; universities sometimes recruit mediocre or totally unsuitable candidates in preference to candidates of high merit. Most of the time when non-academic staff are not at their duty posts they never get punished. People with questionable degrees/qualifications paid bribes to get into the university system. In several cases, people employed by federal universities through connection with political authorities.”

The report which used the University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as case studies identified other cases of corruption in the university system to include: “bribery to get a position; NYSC mobilisation before graduation; facilitating fake transcripts; short-circuiting employment procedures; auctioning university assets without authorisation; politicised disciplinary action; inflated contracts, admission irregularities and racketeering, result falsification; nepotism; sexual harassment; examination question leakages, abetting examination malpractices; and deliberate poor invigilation of examinations.”

According to Mrs. Dixon-Ogbechi Nkemdinim, “The research team administered questionnaires and conducted interviews at the main campus and College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. The team also visited the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where the instrument was also administered at its two campuses. The report focuses mainly on federal universities even though there are three different categories of universities in Nigeria namely, federal, state and private universities.”
The report read in part: “The focus on federal universities is important because the Federal Government of Nigeria is the custodian of tertiary education at the national level and it directs and controls the affairs of the parastatals in charge of tertiary education system in Nigeria to a very large extent.”

“We also found several unresolved cases of diversion of university funds for personal use; embezzlement, mismanagement, unmerited allocation of hostel accommodation, discrimination in the allocation of staff quarters; certificate/transcript racketeering; improper use of university assets; inflation of cost of contracts, award of contracts to friends or relatives; and admission racketeering by non-staff.”

Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer, said over N200 billion was disbursed by TETFund to Nigerian universities in 2017.

“Neither ASUU nor any of the campus unions monitored the disbursement of the funds,” Mr. Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said

“Also, how many companies are paying two per cent of their annual profit to support our university system? The bulk of the funds meant to improve the universities end up in the pocket of the contractors. Three vice chancellors are currently standing trial for looting funds allocated for running the universities.”

Mr. Falana also said, “Based on the 1992 FG-ASUU Agreement the federal government was compelled to enact the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act. The Act has established the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) as an intervention agency charged with the responsibility for managing, disbursing and monitoring the education tax to public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Pursuant to section 1 of the Act every company shall contribute education tax of two per cent of its annual profit to the TETFUND.”

“Professor Baffa, the Executive Secretary of TETFUND announced in March this year the commencement of activities to kickstart the 2017 disbursement of the whopping sum of N213 billion to the nation’s tertiary institutions. If TETFUND can disburse N213 billion in one year it is my view that if the education tax is well managed it will go a long way in addressing the crisis of underfunding of our tertiary institutions,” Mr. Falana said.

“Just recently, it was reported that the new management of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) paid N5 billion to the TSA. The money was realised from the sale of admission forms to applicants seeking admission to the tertiary institutions in 2017. Meanwhile, university administrators have not accounted for the money realised from the sale of post jamb examination forms.”

Mr. Falana said having fought and won the battle for university autonomy, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) should ensure that the internal machinery of each university is deployed to prevent the diversion of public funds.

“It is high time ASUU established a committee for the purpose of monitoring the management of public funds in the universities, the collection of the two per cent education tax by all registered companies in the country and the disbursement of fund to universities by TETFUND. Unless the public funds allocated to the universities are judiciously spent, by the management it is morally indefensible on the part of ASUU to continue to embark on industrial action to press for adequate funding of tertiary institutions and improved working conditions of the staff,” Mr. Falana added.

According to the report, “Other cases of corruption being covered up are: falsification of results; extortion of students; late payment of money due to staff for examination invigilation, excess workload and other allowances; and collection of bribes before signing official documents; intimidation and victimisation by superior officials; promoting preferred staff ahead of others who are equally or more qualified; and deliberately delaying the progress of Ph.D candidates because of departmental politics.”

The report also read: “We also found cases of lecturers writing students’ research projects and extorting fees from them; students fronting for lecturers to extort from other students; stealing and misappropriation of university funds; falsification of age; diversion of funds; and ghost workers syndrome; impersonation during examinations; forgery; and diverting internally-generated revenues into personal account.”

“Although the originally proposed sampling locations were Lagos (University of Lagos) and Abuja (University of Abuja), the University of Abuja could not be accessed because the institution was on vacation. Hence, the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was used as a feasible substitute.”

“The judgmental sampling procedure was to select the relevant universities; simple random sampling procedure was used to select the relevant departments/units at the University of Lagos while the snowball sampling procedure was used to select the relevant departments/units at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Thereafter, the convenience sampling procedure was used to select the sample subjects from the two universities.”

“The authorities should also publish blacklists (i.e., lists showing individuals guilty of corrupt practices) by the university administration; including provisions designed to ensure the proper conservation and use of resources entrusted to staff in the performance of their jobs in the university’s condition of service; and involve the unions and other stakeholders in deciding how funds are to be used for projects in the university and developing sanctions for staff that do not report corrupt practices.”

“Most of the findings may only be applicable to federal universities, in broadly generalised manner. Another constraint encountered was the respondents’ reluctance to fill the questionnaires because of their apprehension about consequences or their busy schedules. However, this limitation was overcome through persuasion and repeat visitations to them.”

“Because it was not feasible to serially investigate all the institutions in the education sector in Nigeria all at once because of the enormous diversity in their geographical locations, this study focused on federal universities in Nigeria. Hence, questionnaires, personal interviews and observation techniques were used to gather data from relevant staff and students at the two selected federal universities. A sample of 1,500 respondents comprising of 900 students, 300 academic and 300 non-academic staff was taken from the two federal universities under study.”

Crime / Man Defiles His 3-year-old Daughter, Attempts To Sodomise His Two Sons by KNEO777: 8:27am On Feb 07, 2018
A 7-year-old boy, Wisdom Adefemi, yesterday at the premises of the Lagos State police command, Ikeja, accused his father, Olusegun, of sexually abusing his 3-year-old sister, Favour.

The minor was confirmed the disclosure by the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, who said he ordered the arrest of Adefemi for allegedly defiling his daughter and attempting to sodomise his two sons.

According to Wisdom, not only did their father slept with hi sister for about 5 times, he also made several attempts to penetrate him and his brother, Godspower, through the anus, but they refused because the pain was too much to bear.

Giving a graphic details of their ordeal, he said:

“My daddy slept with Favour from here (pointing at the private part of his sister.) He put her on the ground and then he did it. It was five times. He wanted to do my own from the back but I refused.

He wanted to do Godspower too. When we refused, he started beating us.”

Parading the suspect, the police boss said he was arrested at No. 6 Ipakan Street, Ijede, after an official of Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Adekoya Sesan, reported the incident.

He said Adefemi had unsupervised access to his kids since he was separated from his wife over alleged spousal abuse. But the suspect, who denied the allegation, insisting that he was innocent, said he was shocked his kids could accuse him of wrongdoing.

He said:

“I am shocked at the allegations. I have never done it and I will never do it. I heard that my children accused me of raping their sister. They never said it before me. I thought the police would bring them before me and ask them so that I can hear it from them directly but the police did not.”

Imohimi said the suspect inflicted grievous injury in the private part of the child as a result of forceful penetration.

“The girl has been taken to Mirabel Medical Centre for examination and treatment while her siblings have been placed in temporary home. The suspect would be charged to court at the end of investigation."

Culture / Igbo Is The Most Foolish Tribe In The World – Uwazuruike by KNEO777: 12:19pm On Feb 04, 2018
Founder and leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazurike, has described the Igbo as foolish.

The MASSOB founder insisted that Igbo may not become Nigeria’s president because they only fight for their pocket.

Speaking with Punch, Uwazurike recalled how Igbo was pushed aside after forming the former ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in 1999.

He insisted that anyone calling for the unity of Nigeria does not mean well for the already troubled nation.

His words, “Remember, it was the Igbo man that formed this PDP but they snatched it from him. Then, it was clear that an Igbo man would be the President of Nigeria. But in Jos, it was the Igbo who robbed themselves of that opportunity. The Igbo at that political event in Jos started speaking Hausa.

“The Igbo started sponsoring (Olusegun) Obasanjo against (Alex) Ekwueme; giving N100 million and all that to another tribe to emerge. Let me tell you, the Igbo tribe is the most foolish tribe I have ever seen in the world.

“While the Yoruba embraced unity, the Igbo man was the person speaking Hausa in Jos; the Igbo man was the one donating money against his own brother in Jos to another candidate.

“Is that a wise tribe? Then, who should I apologise to for using the word ‘foolish?’ Then what have we achieved from the PDP? For how many years have the Yoruba people used the PDP? Eight years! Now, when it was the turn of the South-East, they sent it to South-South.”

Politics / Nigeria Will Cease To Exist If Buhari Wins Second Term – Prof. Ben Nwabueze by KNEO777: 3:15pm On Feb 02, 2018
Elder statesman and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, has declared that Nigeria is a failed state under President Muhammadu Buhari.

Prof. Nwabueze also said Nigeria may become extinct if he is re-elected in 2019.

The erudite scholar noted that Nigeria, under the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC), government had failed to perform the major role expected of a state which is to ensure the security and welfare of the citizenry.

Nwabueze made the declaration in a paper entitled ‘Nigeria under president Buhari is categorised as a failed state by an internationally-recognised agency’.

“By all internationally relevant and accepted indices and indicators, and judged by the reality on the ground, Nigeria is justifiably categorised as a failed state, now ranked 15th among the ‘worst failed’ states in the world.

“If president Buhari is given a second term in office, God forbid that he should ever get a second term, Nigeria will cease to exist, except in the sense in which Zaire, under (late) Mobutu (Sese Seko) existed. That is as an idea without an existential content, a state existing only in name or the map as a mere geographical expression,” he said.

Nwabueze, however, added that there was hope for Nigeria, if there was a change in leadership.

“I believe, however, that the country can be made to work again, as it was doing before, and to become a great nation it is destined to be, and a leading star in the affairs of the African continent and, indeed, the world. But, for that to happen, there has to be a change of leadership.”

“It is gratifying that the Boko Haram insurgents have been dislodged from the areas over which they took control, but, it is equally sad that they still continue to kill, maim and brutalise large numbers of people and to destroy properties, resulting in the displacement of thousands from their homes.

“Following on the heels of the Boko Haram atrocities is the Fulani herdsmen menace. It started in the form of farmers’ herdsmen clashes but has now developed into a scary dimension,” known to be as bloody and murderous and atrocious as Boko Haram insurgency.

“In Benue State, in particular, it has been a long chain of killings, dating back to 2013. In that year alone, Benue recorded eight attacks in villages resulting in deaths. There were 16 attacks in 2014, eight in 2015, the same number in 2016, and five in 2017.

“The number of deaths is put at about 3,000 across the country. The method of attack, which is not any different from the one applied by Boko Haram insurgents, includes cutting open the stomach, beheading, slitting the throat, suicide bombing, surrounding villages and opening fire on them while asleep, etc.

“The method of attack is so barbaric, so much so as to be unimaginable in 21st century Nigeria. What is shocking is the lethargic posture of the Federal Government, especially as the perpetrators of the dastardly acts are identifiable”, he said.

Crime / "Glee" Star, Mark Salling Commits Suicide At 35 by KNEO777: 8:09am On Jan 31, 2018
"Glee" star Mark Salling, 35, who was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in October 2017, to possession of child pornography involving prepubescent minors has hung himself.

Sentencing in the case was set for March 2018 and he was expected to get 4 to 7 years in prison as part of a plea deal he made in December 2017.

According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, Salling had to register as a sex offender and enter a treatment program; have no verbal or electronic contact with anyone under the age of 18; stay 100 feet away from schools, parks, public swimming pools, youth centers, playgrounds and arcades; and pay $50,000 in restitution to each victim.

Law enforcement say Salling's body was found hanging from a tree. According to police, they received a call to do a "welfare check" on Salling.

A family member also went to the LAPD station at 3 AM Tuesday to report Salling as a missing person.

The call the police received somehow led them to the baseball field where Salling's body was found.

Homicide detectives on scene ruled out foul play, but they say all signs point to suicide by hanging. His body was found near a riverbed in Sunland near a little league field adjacent to a creek the area where he lived.

Salling’s attorney Michael Proctor confirmed the news of the troubled actor’s passing in a statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday.

“I can confirm that Mark Salling passed away early this morning,” said Proctor. “Mark was a gentle and loving person, a person of great creativity, who was doing his best to atone for some serious mistakes and errors of judgment. He is survived by his mother and father, and his brother. The Salling family appreciates the support they have been receiving and asks for their privacy to be respected.”

Salling had cut his wrists back in August and it appeared to be a suicide attempt, although his lawyer denied it at that time.
