A former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, have been found guilty of organ trafficking in the United Kingdom. The duo alongside their daughter, Sonia, and a medical doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey. They criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney, the jury found on Thursday. The judge, Justice Jeremy Johnson, will pass a sentence at a later date, The Guardian UK reports. Seun mynd44 lalasticlala Front page |

A young lady has tearfully recounted how her ex-boyfriend died while sleeping with her years ago in 2017. According to the young lady, she was having an intense session with him when he suddenly screamed and died immediately. However, following his unfortunate demise, an autopsy confirmed that he died of a brain aneurysm during the activity. She added that she went through a lot of trauma after the incident and only healed about a month or 2 months ago. In her words: "I was in a relationship with him for like 3-4 years and he died of a brain aneurysm in the middle of sex. Kinda like a month or two ago, that's when I finally healed and he died like 2017." A young lady has tearfully recounted how her ex-boyfriend died while sleeping with her years ago in 2017. Members of the Hamar tribe in Ethiopia believe the elaborate scars demonstrate a woman’s capacity for love, and if they fall on hard times later in life it allows them to call on those who whipped them for help. The brutal tradition is known as Ukuli Bula, and was captured by photographer Jeremy Hunter. Instead of fleeing, women beg men to whip them again during the ceremony, held in the Omo River Valley. For men, male decoration is simpler with the exception of their facial painting which denote status and progression up the social ladder. A key element of the ceremony is the whipping of young women who are family members or relatives of the boy undertaking the Rite-of-Passage. The women trumpet and sing, extolling the virtues of the Jumper, declaring their love for him and for their desire to be marked by the whip. They coat their bodies with butter to lessen the effect of the whipping which is only carried out by Maza – those who have already undergone this Rite-of-Passage. Some whipping appears to be tender, others more aggressive. But once whipped, the girls proudly show off their scars – as proof of their courage and integrity. Itís a kind of Insurance Policy. The ceremony tends to unite the family and is a demonstration of the womenís capacity for love, and in later life – perhaps when they’ve become widowed – they will look to the boys who whipped them years before to request help. The scars on her back are said to be proof of her sacrifice for the man, and it is therefore impossible for the man to refuse her needs in hard times or emergencies. Hamar women of the Lower Omo Valley, Southern Ethiopia willingly submit themselves to be whipped during the ceremony of Ukuli Bula . It indicates their courage and capacity for love, and is a form of insurance policy

The British High Commission has said the UK Minister of State for Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell MP, is prepared to take action against those who engaged in or incited electoral violence during the just-concluded general elections. The commission said the UK was already collating names of perpetrators and would impose sanctions “including preventing people from obtaining UK visas or imposing sanctions under our human rights sanctions regime.” In a statement made available to our correspondent on Wednesday, the high commission said, “We can confirm that we are collating relevant information, with a view to taking action against some individuals.” The high commission, which said it deployed observers in six states, noted, “There were notable points of concern. Members of our observation mission personally observed violence, and voter suppression in numerous voting locations. We witnessed and received credible reports from other observer missions and civil society organisations of vote buying and voter intimidation, the destruction and hijacking of election materials and the general disruption of the process in numerous states including Lagos, Enugu and Rivers. In addition, we observed incidents of harassment of journalists. Freedom of speech and a free press is crucial for a healthy democracy, and journalists must be able to go about their work without being threatened. “The UK is concerned by the use of inflammatory ethnoreligious language by some public and political figures. We call on all leaders not just to distance themselves from this kind of language, but to prevent those who speak on their behalf from doing so in this way. “It is a testament to their commitment to democracy that many Nigerians were prepared to vote despite being faced with intimidation and hostility.” It, however, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for improving on its performance during the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections on March 18. |
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero has directed public sector workers in the country to embark on strike beginning from Wednesday next week. He also directed that affiliate unions constituting the Nigeria Labour Congress should also be on standby for picketing exercises across all branches of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, nationwide. The directive followed an earlier ultimatum issued by the Central Working Committee members of the NLC last week criticising the cash swap policy of the Federal Government. Ajaero said the decision to picket CBN branches became necessary, as the Federal Government and the CBN have not shown any commitment to address the situation. He lamented that despite the Supreme Court order allowing the old N500 and N1000 notes to circulate with the new notes till December 31 this year, the situation appears to be getting worse as workers cannot access cash to pay fares to work, nor can they buy food for their families. Briefing reporters on Wednesday at the headquarters of NLC, the apex Labour union also criticised the pricing irregularities in the petroleum sector, which was also a cause for concern. "Last week, we gave an ultimatum for the review of the cash crunch bedeviling the country, but we have discovered to our dismay that as at this moment not much effort has been made to ameliorate the situation, the government is still foot dragging on these issues we raised. "Based on this, we met again this morning to review our position and resolved that by Wednesday next week, all CBN branches will be picketed. "Workers are directed to stay at home too because people cannot eat, workers can no longer go to the office, we have been pushed to the wall, we have decided to take our destiny in our hands, we have mobilised our workers for this exercise," Ajaero stated.

The police have issued a stern warning to individuals and groups intending to disrupt Saturday's governorship and state assembly elections. This development trails the trending video of MC Oluomo threatening people who are not going to vote APC in the upcoming governorship elections to stay at home. The deputy inspector general of police in charge of the South-East, John Amadi, issued the warning on Thursday in Umuahia, while addressing officers of the state command at the Police Officers' Mess, Umuahia. "Anybody that wants to disrupt the system should be ready to die, and anybody that wants to die should come out and disrupt the system. If you love your life, keep away, cast your vote, go home and wait for the result," Amadi urged the Abia electorate to disregard any threat to stop the elections, reassuring them that the polls would be held as scheduled. "On behalf of the inspector general of police and the management team, I assure you that there would not be any infractions. I can assure you that we are ready. We belong to Nigerians, and this is the time to make everybody know that our primary responsibility is to protect lives and property. We have assured Nigerians and the South-East that nobody should entertain any fears. Anybody that wants to snatch ballot boxes or disrupt the elections will be promptly dealt with. We have deployed our men to dominate all the areas that we think that trouble would erupt from. So we are sounding a note of warning to criminals and non-state agents that we would not tolerate anything that would not allow the people to cast their vote and choose who they want to represent them." He assured visitors to the state, including election monitors and observers, of their safety, saying, "We also assure you that INEC officials and materials must be adequately protected." |
