July 2002) According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), reproductive health care is among the crucial elements that give refugees the basic human welfare and dignity that is their right.1 Reproductive health care has been a neglected element of relief work, but many international humanitarian organizations have begun to develop and implement programs to give refugees the support they need.

Who Are Refugees and IDPs?

Nearly 37 million people worldwide are currently living away from their homes and communities because of natural disasters, persecution, war, or violence. People are considered refugees if they have crossed an international border, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) if they have been forced to leave their homes but remain in their own countries. Worldwide, there are more than 14.5 million refugees; the number of IDPs is even greater, at more than 20 million people.2

While proportions of female and male refugees are nearly equal on a global basis, regional differences exist. In some areas, women and children make up 90 percent of the refugee population, because their husbands or fathers have died, been taken prisoner, or become combatants.

Many refugees have significant health problems even before being uprooted. Most displaced people come from countries with low life expectancies and high levels of maternal and newborn mortality. They also have limited literacy and skills, as well as low rates of employment and low social status. These problems may be exacerbated by displacement.

Refugees and IDPs face myriad changes, including disruption in the social support from family and friends, pressure to change their desired fertility levels, and changing societal roles. Refugees who end up in camps, however crowded, are often the lucky ones, since camps usually provide food, water, and basic health care, along with education, job training, and other activities. Such services are not always available to IDPs or to refugees not living in camps.

Women and men may find themselves without any reproductive health care at all, or they may receive care through UNHCR or another donor.3 But basic family planning and maternal and child health services often do not address problems commonly experienced by refugees and IDPs.

Refugees' and IDPs' Reproductive Health Concerns

Many women who are refugees or IDPs face unwanted, unplanned, and poorly spaced pregnancies, due to a lack of access to contraceptive services and supplies, overburdened providers with little time to educate or counsel clients, pressure from husbands or other family members to "rebuild" the population, and increases in rape and prostitution. Refugees are at higher risk than stable populations for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and gender-based violence.4

Research indicates that the availability of contraceptives has improved in stable refugee populations since the mid-1990s.5 Researchers know little about how the immediate aftermath of flight affects fertility preferences, but refugees' fertility desires appear to revert relatively quickly to what they were before flight.6 A reproductive health study of Afghan refugees in Pakistan in 2000 showed that family planning methods were used by 9 percent of currently married women, with 70 percent of those users preferring to receive injections.7

Rape and other forms of violent sexual assault have been used as weapons of war to demoralize communities (as in the former Yugoslavia) and even to alter the ethnic composition of a population (as occurred in both Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia). Border guards, soldiers, and fellow refugees may also perpetrate acts of violence against refugee women. One study of more than 1,000 households in Sierra Leone during its eight-year civil war showed that as many as 11 percent of displaced women and girls experienced war-related sexual violence.8 Gender-based violence can have long-lasting, severe physical effects, including HIV/AIDS.

Nairaland GeneralHow To Effectively Control Your Anger by konjinus(op): 6:18pm On Aug 26, 2016
We all get angry sometimes, but if you’re prone to rage bursts that rival The Hulk, it can really damage your relationships and even ruin your career. Here are some tips for keeping your cool when your temper feels like a short fuse burning.
Stop Yourself Before You React
Before you do anything else, try to hit the brakes as fast as you can. While it may seem obvious, taking a moment to yourself before you react is one of the most effective ways to keep that temper under control. What can differ, however, is what you do after you hit the brakes. There’s no silver bullet that works for everyone, but you can start with some of the classics:
Count to ten: In your head or out loud, so you can cool down and see where you’re at afterward.
Think about the situation: Ask yourself a question to help you assess the situation. Is it something you can control? Did you misunderstand the thing that’s fueling your fire? Know where you’re going before you move forward.
Take a time out: Excuse yourself and step away from the situation. You’re a pot of boiling water, so remove yourself from the heat source before you boil over.
Take a couple of deep breaths: Slow your heart rate and send oxygen to your brain. Psychologist Carlos Coto at Pick the Brain suggests the 4x4 breathing technique where you breath in for four seconds, hold the breath for four seconds, and exhale the breath slowly for four seconds. Repeat until you feel calm enough to react.
If it feels like your patience is always on its last thread, a simple trick you can do is to keep something in your pocket to mess with. It can be a pebble, a coin, a pen, whatever you like as long as it’s a physical object. Think of it as your talisman and reach for it when your impatience starts to peak. Mary Jane Ryan, author of Power of Patience, explains how this can kill your temper’s momentum:
...when you start to feel irritated, move it from one pocket to the other. This will interrupt the impatience cycle and give you a chance to regroup.
You can fiddle with it when your anger starts to build just as if you were nervous. Then when things get to be too much, do the pocket switcharoo. Your mind will be forced to switch gears and focus on the action of handling the object, making you more self-aware, and giving you just long enough time to let your better thinking kick in and pull you back from the ledge. It might sound a little silly at first—like it’s a totem from the movie Inception—but it can be very effective if you give it an honest chance. The key to stopping your temper is derailing your mind, as if you’re cutting a burning fuse before it gets to the bomb.
Picture Yourself Getting Angry and See How It Would Look
Looking at situations in the third person can be useful for problem solving, but it can also help you shift your perspective on situations when you’ve lost sight of things. When your temper rises, tunnel vision narrows your thoughts, making it seem like getting angry is the only course of action.
Make Better Decisions by Thinking of Yourself in the Third Person
We often struggle between taking care of ourselves and making other people happy. Psychology Today…
Read more
Caroline Smith at Mind Tools suggests you imagine what you look when you’re angry to snap yourself out of it before it happens:
If you imagine how you look and behave while you’re angry, it gives you some perspective on the situation. For instance, if you’re about to shout at your co-worker, imagine how you would look. Is your face red? Are you waving your arms around? Would you want to work with someone like that? Probably not.
You may care about what’s frustrating you, but you probably care about what you look like too. Especially if you happen to be in a professional environment. It may seem counter-intuitive to think about being angry, but it will make you feel a little foolish and stop you from doing something you’ll regret.

PoliticsWho Is Not Corrupt? by konjinus(op): 3:50pm On Aug 23, 2016
When we say a person is corrupt what do we mean? The word corruption has a very controversial meaning. Some define corruption as basically stealing, others see it as an attitude. However, the oxford English dictionary defines it as
willing to act dishonestly in return for money or personal gain. Therefore we can combine the definitions as to from a general meaning to the word.

There are various forms of corruption as can be perceived from the meaning of the word itself. As discussed earlier, the driving force of this concept is selfish interest and dishonesty. It can be in the form of embezzlement or diversion of money, goods or services. It can also be a religious or social aspect as in denying a person an opportunity or the ‘spotlight’ on the basis of color, gender, race or religious background. Other forms of corruption may include disruption of a system that has provided equality so as to make some group of people suffer. So we say corruption is everywhere!

The effects of corruption can be felt in every aspect of life. This is because it disrupts the equality system. The effects of this evil act can include the following; poverty, crime, regression, destruction of life and properties, and even war!
Although the concept of corruption is a complex one, the solution is not. Since we have discovered the precursor to corruption to be a very little selfish desire, then we can control it. A selfish man is a corrupt man; same thing applies to a thief, a dishonest man, a liar, a murderer. If we don’t win corruption, corruption will win!

EducationWhere Is The Honor by konjinus(op): 3:43pm On Aug 23, 2016
‘The honor is found in the end and not the means’. This statement is very debatable and triggers controversy as some people may see it as the other way around; the honor is found in the means and not the end. Now before we go further let’s pause for a while and peer in to the word honor itself. The oxford dictionary defines honor as great respect or esteem- a feeling of pride and pleasure from being shown respect. a source of esteem. Since therefore it is a feeling, it is subjective and varies with the individual concerned.
When an individual sees the position of the honor of a struggle at the end, they may not really care about how the struggle is done. This is because there are many ups and downs in a struggle; and some ugly necessities involved in achieving the desired results. An instance is a war scenario where many lives and properties are lost. However what many historians are concerned with is the glorious victory. Another instance is in the production of a good or service where the finished product is judged by how it looks or how useful it is. The shortcoming of this view however it is blind to the welfare of workers or the glory of the struggle as the profit or outcome of the means involved steals all the attention and honor.
On the other hand when the honor is bestowed in the means, the end results is not really important. This is because the means involved is considered as a beautiful struggle and an inspirational event for future struggles. This view however fails to see that a struggle is incomplete without fulfilment and a success. The welfare and the entire struggle process is however monitored and given the required attention. This attitude is important when confronting the long term problems. An instance is a political or religious movement.
Therefore can we then say that the honor is found in both the end and the means of a struggle? or perhaps neither in both? Since we have seen that the position of the honor is subjective that is according to a person’s discretion. Then it can even be found in the beginning of a struggle. This is because the founder of an establishment, movement or idea is honored and remembered almost all the time as seen in the past. Pioneering a field is also considered remarkable in the science world. Having said this can we say the honor is found in the beginning, means and the end?
