The unions asked their members to withdraw services from all aerodromes nationwide indefinitely.

With this, airspace may not be open for operations from Monday.

PoliticsProposed Strike: FG, Labour Parley Ends On Inconclusive Note by Kwanza(op): 10:05pm On Sep 24, 2020
The meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, the Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Labour Congress and members of the Nigerian Governors Forum to avert the proposed strike slated for September 28, has just ended on an inconclusive note.

After much deliberations, both arms of Labour agreed that the meeting be adjourned till Monday next week to enable the Executives consult with their various organs.

But Ngige believes the meeting was successful and that the strike would be averted.

He told reporters shortly after Thursday’s meeting which held at the Banquet Hall of the State House that government has agreed to a proposal to make provision for palliatives to cushion the effects of the increment in fuel and electricity hike.

Ngige said: “Fruitful meeting. They are going back to their organs. When they consult their organs tomorrow, next tomorrow maybe they will take a new decision.

“We have requested them to shelve the strike. We have appealed to them to shelve the strike.”

“The government side agreed proposals with them on the palliative to cushion the effect of the rise in petroleum products and electricity.”

“The meeting agreed to adjourn to Monday, 3pm we had a fruitful discussion”.

Recall that Labour had settled for an industrial action on September 28,2020 after ratification by the National Executive Council.

While faulting the timing of the increment, they had requested the government to fix the ailing refineries so as to reduce the burden of importation on the country.

They had also bemoaned that the recent increases were ploys to erode the gains of the N30,000 minimum wage recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

PoliticsWe Want Our Own Country – Yoruba Leader, Akintoye Tells Buhari by Kwanza(op): 11:13am On Sep 24, 2020
The leader of Yoruba ethnic group, Professor Banji Akintoye has said that Yoruba ethnic group is in dire need of its own country out of the present Nigeria.

Akintoye said that over 55 million people of Yoruba extraction, will get their freedom without breaking the law of the country or shedding blood.

The renowned historian made these declarations during the celebration of Kiriji war held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Wednesday.

DAILY POST gathered that Kiriji war happened in Yoruba land many decades ago.

Present at the celebration included Otun Olubadan, High Chief Lekan Balogun who represented the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Otunba Deji Osibogun, Wale Alabi, Comrade Olu Omotosho, Opeoluwa Elisha Ademoyegun and Iyanda Wasiu.

Akintoye while insisting that nothing would stop the liberation of Yoruba from its enemies, awakened the youths, who he said, were very important in the fight for struggle.

He said, “We have been saying we will have a Yoruba nation of our own. Yoruba World Congress is committed to helping Yoruba nation to secure its position in the comity of nations.

“They do say I don’t compromise. It is not every time. But once we say, we will take a common stance, I don’t know how to betray. We will get Yoruba nation free without violence, we will not break the laws of Nigeria. If there is anyone who wants to be violent, we will tell them, no.

“If you are violent and there are dead bodies on the streets, you are circumventing our purpose. We are telling the world that we want our own country. We have the rights to demand for our rights. When we launched Amotekun, was there any arrest, violence? If you want to stage a rally, do so. It’s your rights but no violence.

“I have passion for the youths. If you don’t have people who can take after you, no matter the amount of wealth you have it’s nothing. These youths are important. We elders can only guide and lead you. We can write letters but it is you who will do it. It must succeed. Anybody saying contrary, I’m not part of that idea.

“In the past of 30 and 40 years ago, the youths have not been the same again. I graduated from the University College Ibadan in the morning and by evening my wife and I were employed. I can’t do the things I’m doing now if I don’t have the youths around me.

“We are hurting our future in a very vicious way. Yoruba are 55 million, 74 percent are 40 years and. Step forward and. They have the authority of the land to say you can’t do it. Go back home. No violence. Go to market places, mechanic workshop, farmers on their way to the farms. If you can do this, getting our resolve done will not be difficult.”

“We don’t force our will on people. Explain to those organizations who don’t understand what you want. Yoruba will not suffer. We are the most populous in Africa. We want to take our own country and begin to build it. Nothing more,” he concluded.

In his own contribution, the leader of Movement for Oduduwa Republic, Architect Akin George explained how they had mobilised other people in Yorubaland.

“We went to Okemesi where the Kiriji war started. We saw the king. From there, we went to Imesi Ile and Igbajo. At Igbajo, we noticed disunity between Imesi Ile and Oke Imesi, between Igbajo and Ibadan people there.

“We reconciled them. We can’t fight the enemies if home front is divided. We may have misunderstanding but should not lead to quarrel,” he revealed.

PoliticsFarooq Kperogi: Oshiomhole And His Lizard And Lion Hyperbole by Kwanza(op): 4:27pm On Sep 21, 2020
Oshiomhole and His Lizard and Lion Hyperbole

I just heard d audiotape of Oshiomhole's interview with ChannnelsTV a day before the Edo governorship election where he characterized Obaseki's promise to extirpate his "godfatherly" tentacles in Edo as the threats of a "lizard" to a "lion." (Obaseki is the "lizard" and he is the "lion."wink

That's an unusually over-dramatic hyperbole, which aggrandizes the enormity of Oshiomhole's defeat--and the deep psychic rupture he must be nursing now.

The defeat of a lion by a lizard is the stuff of legends. The Bible's "David and Goliath" story pales miserably in comparison!

PoliticsEl-Rufai On Edo Election: "APC Was Going To Win, I Don’t Know What Happened" by Kwanza(op): 9:03am On Sep 21, 2020
Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai on Monday suggested he was surprised at the loss of the All Progressive Congress in the recently concluded Edo State Governorship Election.

The Governor said three weeks to the election, polls indicated that the APC was set to win.

However, on Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared incumbent Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the election and Governor of the state for the next four years.

“We would have loved to win,” El-Rufai said, during an interview on Sunrise Daily. “Quite frankly I was optimistic.

“Up to three weeks ago, the polls indicated that we were going to win. I don’t know what happened in the last two, three weeks of the campaign.

“As you know, a large number of voters make up their minds in the last two weeks of election. Many voters decide, no matter what happens, this is how I am voting. But most people want to wait and watch and make up their minds in the last two weeks.

“Three weeks ago, the polls clearly showed that APC was going to win, but the results came out differently from what we expected.”

However, El-Rufai commended how the election played out and commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his policy of non-interference in elections.

“The election was reasonably decent,” he said. “We were all worried about violence; there was very little violence or none at all. So Obaseki has won, that’s it. You can’t go into an election without adverting your mind to the possibility of losing.

“And one thing President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has always done is to say that there must be free and fair election and the people’s choice must prevail.

“And the President has never used what is called Federal Might that other governments have used in the past to steal elections. We always insist that everyone should go and pitch to the people and may the best man win. And we can live with it.”

Governor Ganduje and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State are all in Benin, Edo State carrying out their assignment for the APC without any molestation or intimidation.

Less than 24 hours to Edo state governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday cried out that its governors are being held hostage by police in the state.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Party, Prince Uche Secondus, who raised the alarm said that police have surrounded the Westend Hotel occupied by the PDP governors.

Secondus called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, to order his men to vacate the hotel immediately.

He added that the governors lives are in danger, noting that the APC governors, who are also in Benin are not harassed.

Secondus alleged that Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma and the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege are presently in the home of former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole.

He said: “The Policemen have surrounded the hotel and their lives are in danger. We call on IGP to ask the police to leave the place because their lives are in danger.

“If APC governors are in Benin, the PDP governors should be in Benin. Our governors would remain in Benin, no one can intimidate us.

“We are bringing this to the attention of the international community. Elections must be free and fair. Elections must be allowed to hold. You cannot allow APC governors in Edo and bar PDP governors.”

PoliticsFG Declares September 16 As National Identity day by Kwanza(op): 10:33am On Sep 15, 2020
The Federal Government has declared Sept. 16 as National Identity Day and has supported the enrolment of Nigerians for Digital Identity (ID) across the country.

Dr Isa Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, said this in a statement signed by Mrs Uwa Suleiman, his spokesperson on Tuesday, in Abuja.

Pantami reminded Nigerians of the importance of digital identity, adding that the ministry was developing the right policy environment to support enrolment for digital IDs in the country.

He said that the celebration of the National Identity Day would take place virtually, adding that digital IDs play critical roles in the development of digital economies, as they were often called the fabrics of the digital economies.

Pantami also stressed that the importance of a digital identity programme for the successful development of a digital economy cannot be overstated.

“The Sept. 16, has been declared as the National Identity Day. Following the approval of the federal government under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria also formally adopted 16.9 as the National Identity Day.

“This year’s edition of the National Identity Day will take place virtually on the same date and will have the theme: Identity for Health, Sustainable Development and Growth.

“We will start by capturing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria and will also support the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and other stakeholders to ensure that we make the process of obtaining digital identities swift and secure.

“One of the key objectives of pillar 6 (Soft Infrastructure) of National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) is support for the accelerated implementation of a Digital Identity Programme,” he said.

He said that the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa rightly noted that Digital Identity and the digital economy were not only linked, but reinforcing as digital ID was the basis for digital economy platforms.

He explained that digital identification can be an important catalyst for various development initiatives in the continent such as impacting on trade, governance, social protection, financial inclusion, domestic resource mobilisation, as well as security and human rights.

As the world and Nigeria mark the International Identity Day and National Identity Day, accordingly, Pantami urged Nigerians to support the development the digital economy by embracing the use of digital identities.

He encouraged Nigerians to visit NIMC accredited centres for their digital identities.

That minister said that his ministry is committed to ensuring that Nigeria derives the benefits of a functional digital ID system and calls on all stakeholders to support the process.

PoliticsJust In: Mailafia Released From DSS Custody After Being Grilled For Over Three H by Kwanza(op):
Dr. Obadiah Mailafia at last regained his freedom after being interrogated by the officials of the Department of State Services, DSS in their office in Jos, the Plateau State capital for over three hours.

Mailafia, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN was invited to appear on Monday before the DSS for the third time in less than two months following some allegations about internal security in a radio interview he granted in Lagos.

He honoured the invitation few minutes past 11am and was not let go until about 2.50 p.m, when he emerged the embrace of his sympathizers who cheered his release.

Upon his release, Mailafia, while speaking with journalists commended the DSS for their professionalism in the discharge of their duties saying the DSS exhibited high sense of professionalism in the way they handled the matter as he said he was not maltreated not intimidated in any guise but urged them to ensure that this should be the last invitation to him on the issue.

“What l said has nothing to with politics , l only spoke as a free citizen of this country and as such, l am the voice of the thousands of the voiceless of the citizens of this country. Muslims and Christian youths have taken and accepted me as their voice, so, l am the voice of the holy martyrs, so if l perish, l perish. God help Nigeria.”

Before being ushered into the premises of DSS this morning, he had said, “I am ready to perish for speaking the mind of million of Nigerian over the incessant killings of innocent citizens going on presently in the country. I don’t know why I have been invited again, this is the third time that they invited me to their office and I honor it. There has not been any instances that warrant any crises in the country after the interview which I granted a radio station in Lagos. Once again ,they have invited me so as a law abiding citizen of this great country, I honourably honour their invitation.

“Let me say that this has nothing to do with politics, I spoke in the interview as a citizen of this country who loves the people of this country, I am the voice of thousands of voiceless people. Thousands of innocent people have been killed in this country in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Southern Kaduna, Benue and Plateau State where we are today. I am the voice of the holy martyrs and if I perish, I perish.”

However, his Counsel, Barr Yakubu Bawa, added that there is no doubt that the constant invitation of Dr. Mailafia by the DSS has made him pass through psychological trauma and expressed hope that this would be the last invitation extended to him.

CrimeHerdsmen Rob Family In Ogun, Gang-Rape A 16-Year-Old Girl – Police by Kwanza(op): 6:26am On Sep 14, 2020
The police in Ogun State said they have arrested two herdsmen, for allegedly robbing and defiling a teenager.

The suspects were identified by the police as Abu Adamu and Muhammadu Aliyu.

A statement by DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the State Police Public Relations Officer, on Sunday, revealed that the suspects were arrested after a distress call received by the police at Ewekoro Divisional Headquarters at about 1am.

Oyeyemi said the armed herdsmen had invaded a farm settlement at Afowowa Gbelu village in Ewekoro, attacking a family residing in the farm settlement.

According to him, the suspects ransacked the house of one Aminat Okeshola and made away with cash of N140,000.

After this, they were said to have taken a 16-year-old daughter of the family to the cassava plantation and took turns to defile her.

DAILY POST learnt that policemen from Ewekoro division went to the farm settlement, combed the entire area and arrested two of the suspects who hid in a nearby bush at the sight of the policemen. The third suspect with them reportedly escaped.

“The two arrested suspects were immediately identified by the victims,” Oyeyemi said.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the herdsmen have always been passing through the farm settlement with their cattle in the day time before they came back to strike on the fateful day,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, DAILY POST reports, has ordered that the fleeing member of the gang be hunted and the case be transferred to the State CIID for investigation and prosecution.

Foreign AffairsNavid Afkari: Iran Executes Wrestler Despite Global Outcry by Kwanza(op): 1:16pm On Sep 12, 2020
Iran has executed a wrestler accused of murder, state media report, defying international appeals for him to be spared.

Navid Afkari, 27, was sentenced to death over the murder of a security guard during a wave of anti-government protests in 2018.

He said he had been tortured into making a confession.

A union representing 85,000 athletes worldwide was among those to call for a stay of execution.

The World Players Association said he had been "unjustly targeted" for taking part in the protests, and called for Iran's expulsion from world sport if it went ahead with the execution.

US President Donald Trump also appealed for mercy, saying the wrestler's "sole act was an anti-government demonstration on the streets".

Afkari was executed by hanging in the southern city of Shiraz, state media report.

His brothers Vahid and Habib were sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison in the same case, according to human rights activists in Iran.

In an audio recording leaked from the prison where he is being held, Afkari said he had been tortured. His mother said her sons were forced to testify against each other.

The brothers' lawyer, Hassan Younesi, said on Twitter that contrary to Iranian news reports, there was no video of the moment of the security guard's killing. He added that footage used as evidence in the case was taken an hour before the crime took place.

The Iranian authorities have denied accusations of torture.

Afkari was a national champion in wrestling, a sport that has a long history and is hugely popular in Iran.

In 2018, protesters in cities across Iran took to the streets over economic hardship and political repression.

Foreign AffairsJust in: Several Killed In Suicide Bombing Outside Mosque In Somalia by Kwanza(op): 6:14pm On Sep 11, 2020
At least six killed and 20 people injured in the attack, which may have been aimed at a provincial politician.

At least six people have been killed in a suicide bombing outside a mosque in the Somalian port city of Kismayo, according to a regional official.

"A suicide bomber wearing a heavy vest of explosives targeted the Muslim congregation at the Qaadim mosque in the centre of the town as people were leaving the mosque after performing Friday prayers," Abdinasir Gulled told the dpa news agency.

Another 20 people were injured in the attack, which may have been aimed at a provincial politician, Gulled said.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack on their Radio Andalus.

The armed group, which has ties to al-Qaeda, regularly launches attacks on government officials, journalists and prominent businessmen, as well as civilians, in the volatile nation in the Horn of Africa.

Attacks continue
The incident comes after three people were killed and seven were injured in a suicide attack at a Mogadishu restaurant on Wednesday. Information ministry spokesman Ismail Mukhtar Omar said the attacker walked into the Blue Sky restaurant near Mogadishu National Theatre before blowing himself up.

At least three Somali special forces soldiers were also killed and an American officer was wounded in a car bombing and mortar attack outside a military base in Somalia's south on Monday. Al-Shabab said it was behind the attack and put the number of dead at 20.

A Somali soldier was also wounded in the attack in Janay Abdalla village, some 60km (37 miles) from Kismayo - which is also Jubaland state's administrative capital.

Somalia has faced near-continuous conflict for almost 30 years, while the internationally-backed government in Mogadishu has been fighting al-Shabab since 2008.

In August, 10 civilians and a police officer were killed in a gun-and-bomb attack by al-Shabab on an upscale beachfront hotel in the capital.

That same month, four al-Shabab fighters held in Mogadishu's central prison were killed in an intense shoot-out with security forces after they managed to get their hands on weapons within the facility.

At least seven people were killed in a separate attack in August when a car bomb exploded at an army base in Mogadishu where members of the Somali National Army (SNA) were stationed.

The debt office explained that the increase in the debt stock by N2.381trn or $6.593bn was accounted for by the $3.36bn budget support loan from the International Monetary Fund, new domestic borrowing to finance the revised 2020 Appropriation Act.

It said this includes the issuance of the N162.557bn Sukuk, and promissory notes issued to settle claims of exporters.

The debt office added, “The DMO expects the public debt stock to grow as the balance of the new domestic borrowing is raised and expected disbursements are made by the World Bank, African Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank which were arranged to finance the 2020 Budget.
