PoliticsHanan And Aisha Buhari Escape Air Crash by Kwanza(op): 11:46am On Aug 22, 2020
President Buhari’s Wife, Aisha, Daughter, Hanan, Co-travellers Escape Air Crash

Nigeria was saved from a national disaster and calamity over the weekend when the private jet returning the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, and her daughter, Hanan, from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, lost control for about 10 minutes after five hours of flying, Saharareporters can exclusively confirm.

Recall that Saharareporters had exclusively reported that the First Lady sneaked out to the UAE, disguising the trip as a medical emergency under the government imposed lockdown to shop for the forthcoming wedding of Hanan.

On their return trip to Nigeria on Friday morning on a private jet with registration number GIV N52MK belonging to billionaire Mohammed Indimi, the plane lost complete control for 10 minutes while only one hour away from approaching the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

It was a strange occurrence beyond the comprehension and explanation of the pilot, who struggled with the aircraft while Mrs Buhari, Hanan and four others with them on the flight were thrown around in the process.

Upon landing safely at the Abuja airport, some of the passengers were rushed to a hospital for treatment and examination.

The First Lady is said to be in good health, however.

Hanan is billed to marry Mohammed Turad, son of a former lawmaker, Alhaji Mahmud Sani Sha’aban, who represented Zaria in the House of Representatives from May 2003 to May 2007.

The marriage is billed to take place on September 4, 2020, inside the Presidential Villa.

A graduate of photography from Ravensbourne University in England, Hanan in July 2019 ordered the Department of State Services to arrest a young businessman based in Delta State, Athony Okolie, after he was issued a mobile number by telecommunications company MTN previously used and abandoned by her.
Okolie spent 10 weeks in unlawful detention before he was finally released by the secret police.

Earlier in January, Hanan was again in the news after she attended an event to photograph a Durbar by Rilwanu Adamu, Emir of Bauchi, in one of the jets in the presidential fleet.

The move was condemned by Nigerians even though the Presidency defended the action by saying that it was a normal procedure.

PoliticsMagu Reacts As Salami Panel Recommends Sack, Prosecution by Kwanza(op): 8:53am On Aug 22, 2020
Previous thread:https://www.nairaland.com/6068921/salami-panel-asks-buhari-fire#93070523

The suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has kicked against the recommendation of his sacking by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice Ayo Salami (retd).

POLITICS NIGERIA learned that the presidential panel, in its interim report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, also recommended that Magu should be prosecuted over allegations of corruption and abuse of office. The panel also recommended the immediate appointment of a new chairman for the anti-graft agency.

But in a swift reaction, Wahab Shittu, counsel to Mr Magu, denied knowledge of any report, adding that no such interim report was sent to the President.

He noted that Justice Salami had informed him that before any report is submitted to the President, his client will be carried along. Shittu added that Magu had yet to open his defence and given a fair hearing and it would be unjust for the panel to recommend his sacking.

He said, “I don’t understand why we should be talking about a reaction to something that is blatantly falsehood. First, the panel is still calling witnesses. Two witnesses appeared before the panel today. So, if there were ongoing proceedings on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and the panel has adjourned till Monday, if witnesses are still being taken and interrogated, and documents are still being submitted, what that should suggest to you is that proceedings are ongoing and have not been concluded. Does it (then) make sense for a report to be submitted?”

He added, “Ibrahim Magu, my client, has not opened his defence and the panel has repeatedly indicated that he would be allowed to defend himself only after witnesses have been exhausted. So, somebody who has yet to defend allegations against him, can he be indicted?

“Whether interim or final, you cannot issue the report without listening to all the witnesses and then take the defence. My reaction is that the story is planted by mischief makers. A similar falsehood was published by a newspaper and I confronted the panel yesterday (Thursday) and the chairman said how could they have issued such a report when they haven’t formally served him with the allegations and he told me to disregard the report.”

PoliticsSalami Panel Asks Buhari To Fire, Prosecute Magu For Corruption by Kwanza(op): 5:13pm On Aug 21, 2020
The presidential panel probing Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has recommended his sack, TheCable understands.

In its interim report submitted on Wednesday, the panel headed, by Ayo Salami, retired president of the court of appeal, also recommended that Magu should be prosecuted over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

Magu is also accused of violating the code of conduct law by allegedly failing to declare his assets when he assumed office in 2015.

TheCable understands that the panel also recommended the appointment of a new chairman for the anti-graft agency “without further delay”.

In a letter dated July 3, 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the panel to submit its “interim reports to me from time to time”.

Mohammed Umar, former director of operations at the EFCC, has been in charge of the commission in acting capacity since July 6 when Magu was whisked before the panel by a combined team of Department of State Services (DSS) and officers from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) of the police in Abuja.

He was detained area 10 of the FCT police command for nine days before being granted bail.

The travails of Magu, a commissioner of police, followed a memo by Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, who accused him of “grave malfeasance”.

He was alleged to have mishandled the recovered loot and sold seized assets to his associates.

Magu was also alleged to have purchased a property in Dubai, United Arab Emirates using a pastor as a conduit.

He has since denied all the allegations which he described as “nonsense”, once saying: “what I am going through is a case of dog eats dog”.

The former acting chairman of EFCC has also accused the panel of not giving him fair hearing.

Through Wahab Shittu, his counsel, Magu has written several letters to the panel, demanding to be served a copy of the charges against him in order to prepare for defence.

Buhari had appointed him in 2015 but the senate declined to confirm his appointment, citing a DSS report which indicted him of corruption — although Magu's denied any wrongdoing.

PoliticsOsinbajo (Pastor RUGA) And N100bn Alpha Beta Scam - Bayo Oluwasanmi by Kwanza(op):
July 13, 2019, The Punch in an exhaustive investigative report, detailed how Vice President Yemi Osinbajo aka Pastor RUGA, was involved in an alleged N100bn scam.

In what could be termed Linkage Scam Group, N100bn was laundered among four different companies owned by the same people. Simmons Cooper Partners is linked to Ocean Trust Limited. Ocean Trust Limited is linked to Alpha Beta Consulting Limited. Alpha Beta Consulting Limited is linked to Alpha Beta LP. The four companies were accused of being a “conduit for diversion and laundering of funds”.

Simmons Cooper Partners is linked to Osinbajo. Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to General Muhammadu Buhari, said Simmons Cooper Partners was listed as a company in which Osinbajo has a stake in his assets declaration form in 2015. Dapo Apara, the erstwhile managing director of Alpha Beta, alleged that Alpha Beta owed the federal government N100bn in unpaid taxes spanning over 10 years.

Osinbajo as the then Attorney General of Lagos State and Wale Edun the then Commissioner for Finance, recommended to Bola Ahmed Tinubu the then Lagos State governor, that Alpha Beta Consulting be given the exclusive rights to collect taxes on behalf of Lagos State government with 10 per cent commission. Alpha Beta raked in N600m per month from the contract.

Pro-transparency groups and those close to Tinubu business empire confirmed that Tinubu owns Alpha Beta. In 2012, Dominic Adegbola, Lagos-based medical doctor, filed a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to Lagos State government seeking detailed information on all Alpha Beta contracts with Lagos State since 1999. Ade Ipaye, the then Lagos State Attorney General now Osinbajo’s chief of staff, turned down the request saying the FOI was a federal law that did not apply to the states.

In November 2017, a state judge ruled that the FOI was applicable to Lagos State. The judge said “The law was duly enacted by the National Assembly and did not require domestication to take effect in states.” What happened to the N100bn Alpha Beta scam? Like all other high profile corruption cases, the EFCC deleted the case from its docket.

During the Buhari-Osinbajo presidency, corruption has flourished in previously unthinkable ways, and at such a remarkable rate, that it’s almost impossible to keep tabs on it. Osinbajo has dutifully stood by General Buhari, mustering a devotional gaze rarely seen by an intellectual to an illiterate and ignorant president. What a comical mismatch!

History is replete with people who have changed the world for good as well as those who caused massive destruction for their people. They left a wake of pain behind them. They left a legacy of destruction, legacy of pain, and legacy of ruins. Osinbajo as Vice President of Federal Republic of Nigeria by his utterances, action, or inaction writes his own history and legacy.

EducationUNILAG Senate Rejects Acting VC, Says Prof Ogundipe Remains VC by Kwanza(op):
The Senate of the University of Lagos, Akoka, has rejected the removal of Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as Vice Chancellor of the institution by the Governing Council.

Led by Wale Babalakin, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, the decision-making organ on Wednesday in Abuja removed Ogundipe as VC of UNILAG, accusing him of gross misconduct and acts of corruption.

But in a meeting held on Thursday by 88 members and anchored by Prof Chioma Ago, a former Dean of the Faculty of Law, the institution’s Senate said the removal of Ogundipe was against UNILAG’s regulation, adding that the Council removed Ogundipe without giving him the opportunity to defend himself.

They also kicked against the appointment of Prof Omololu Soyombo as Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution.

“Part of the condition for the removal of a Vice Chancellor is that a joint committee of the Senate and Governing Council must sit and investigate with three representatives from each side but the Senate was never represented, the Senate was never consulted, the Senate never knew the allegations against their member.

“The removal of Prof Ogundipe did not follow the Act establishing the university. He was not given fair hearing and the opportunity to defend himself.

“The Senate therefore rejects the removal of Prof Ogundipe and the appointment of an Acting VC,” a member, who attended the meeting, told SaharaReporters.

PoliticsAPC Interim Panel Battles Against Time, Party To Shift Convention by Kwanza(op): 9:18am On Aug 13, 2020
There were strong indications on Wednesday that the Mai Mala Buni-led All Progressives Congress Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee was battling against time ahead of the expiration of its six-month tenure, which began in June.

The PUNCH gathered in Abuja that although the tenure of the caretaker committee would end in December, it had yet to make substantial progress on its main assignments, which include the withdrawal of court cases instituted against the party and or its leaders, the reconciliation of aggrieved party members and preparations for the national convention.

It was learnt that the caretaker committee would seek an extension of its tenure to enable it to deal with these issues, which would ultimately lead to the shift of the national convention initially scheduled for November.

A member of the APC National Executive Committee, who confided in our correspondent on Wednesday, said the committee would be hinging its request on these realities.

There were indications on Wednesday the party might hold a NEC meeting where the tenure of the caretaker committee would be extended to enable it to complete its assignment.

Recall that the APC’s NEC had, during a meeting held at the Presidential Villa on June 25, dissolved the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee and set up the committee headed by Buni.

Following the decision reached by the party’s NEC at its last meeting held in June, the caretaker committee’s tenure is six months which ends by December 2020. The APC is required to have held a national convention where substantive officers of the party will emerge.

However, Article 25 A (ii) of the party’s constitution states, “Without prejudice to Article 25 (A) (i) of this Constitution, the National Executive Committee may summon an emergency National Convention at any time provided at least seven (7) days’ notice of the meeting shall be given to all members eligible to attend.”

Before the June NEC meeting, the party had been battling a protracted crisis, which led to the suspension of the National Chairman, Oshiomhole, by a Federal High Court in Abuja, a decision which was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal on June 16.

Soon after his suspension, 14 of 20 members of the NWC announced the late governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, who was then the Deputy National Chairman, as acting National Chairman.

However, the next day, the former Deputy National Secretary of the party, Victor Giadom announced himself as acting national chairman citing a court order.

Just as he left the media briefing at the APC National Secretariat, the group loyal to Oshiomhole and Ajimobi, addressed a press conference announcing the National Vice Chairman (South South), Hilliard Eta, as National Chairman, to act on Ajimobi’s behalf because the former governor was then bedridden.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), during the June NEC meeting directed members, who had filed cases against one another to withdraw them. However, a number of these cases are still before the courts.

The Buni-led committee was also mandated to reconcile aggrieved members before the planned national convention.

The NEC member, who spoke to one of our correspondents, said that the committee had not started its real task of reorganising the party.

The source said, “The November date for the convention is no longer feasible. The chairman is already reaching out to his colleagues on this issue. The truth is that while the committee has started on the right footing by reaching out to our leaders and winning over some of our aggrieved members especially those who left, which is a good beginning, the Edo and Ondo elections have taken the centre stage. The committee has not been categorical on the fate of the Chief Bisi Akande-led National Reconciliation Committee set up by Oshiomhole.”

Another highly placed member of the party, who also confided in one of our correspondents, said, “They have few options in this matter, unless they get an extension, they can’t do much. What is at stake is larger than platitudes. There are issues of our party register and the amendment of the constitution.

“They are currently preoccupied with the Edo and Ondo elections. Nothing else is happening seriously.”

A member of the dissolved Adams Oshiomhole- led APC NWC, who also spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said they had yet to be approached to make any impute into repositioning the party.

The source said, “They don’t believe that we matter. They have not met with us, not even the courtesy of reaching out to us. They are talking about extension. Some of them feel that all is fair in love and war. I believe that an inter-party disagreement is not war, it is just a battle. It is when you are fighting another party that you can consider it a war of some sorts. Some of them are doing everything for us to lose Edo so that Oshiomhole will be seen as nothing.”

PGF DG writes committee, seeks another NEC meeting
Amidst these concerns, the Director General of the Progressives Governors Forum, Dr Salihu Lukman, has written a memo to the caretaker committee recommending steps which should be taken before the proposed national convention.

In the memo titled, “Appeal for reconciliation and peace-building in APC,” addressed to the caretaker committee chairman, Lukman recommended among other things that the committee should convene another NEC meeting to approve proposed activities of convention working committee up to the national convention; “commence the process of membership recruitment/verification, leading to reformation of leadership of the party from wards, local government, states to the extra ordinary national convention; as well as set up a constitutional review/amendment committee,” which should be able to submit proposals for review/amendment of the APC constitution.

Oshiomhole, others deploying unfair means for Edo election – PGF DG
He also revealed a plot by some people within the party to make Oshiomhole, a contender in the forthcoming national convention.

Lukeman also said “Everybody in the APC is being blackmailed to accept the way the Edo 2020 governorship campaign is being organised as the best way to win the election under the control of Comrade Oshiomhole. This is wrong and in the long run it will be injurious to the electoral viability of the party.

“Even more disturbing is the clear indication that Comrade Oshiomhole and section of the APC leadership that is working with Comrade Oshiomhole are not preparing to approach the Edo election based on fair contests.

“Not even the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for “a transparent process so that the confidence of the people will be strengthened” is guiding the management of the Edo campaign.”

But a former Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kazeem Afegbua, said Lukeman was still embittered by his inability to secure a senatorial ticket.

Afegbua said this in response to thr memo written by Lukeman to the APC Caretaker Committee, said, “ The grouse started when Comrade Oshiomhole refused to accede to his request of senatorial ticket in Kaduna for the 2019 election

We will meet to review our activities next week, says panel
A member of the Committee, Senator Abubakar Yusuf, did not confirm or deny the alleged move to extend the tenure of the panel when confronted by our correspondent on phone on Wednesday.

He said, “I cannot confirm or deny the said move to extend the tenure of our committee. You have to give us till next week when we shall meet to review our activities thus far.”

Politics[BREAKING] Strike: LASG, Petrol Tanker Drivers’ Talks Fail by Kwanza(op): 9:04pm On Aug 09, 2020
The Petroleum Tankers Drivers Association has said its planned strike will begin on Monday (tomorrow) as planned because the association has not reached any agreement with the Lagos State Government.

The National Chairman of PTDA, Mr Salimonu Oladiti, said this in an interview with The PUNCH in Ibadan on Sunday.

He said the issues which forced the drivers to plan to embark on an indefinite strike had not been addressed.

He noted that talks between officials of the Lagos State Government and petrol tanker drivers failed to achieve the desired result.

Oladiti said, “We don’t have much to say. If the issues of extortion and harassment of our members are addressed, we won’t go on strike but if the issues are not addressed, we will go on with it.

“We are not happy to disrupt fuel supply because we know the effect but we cannot continue to cope with the problems.

“Security agents and hoodlums are extorting our members and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management use taser on our drivers and this can kill.

“We have been trying to cope with this for a long time but it has got to a point that our members are accusing us of feeling unconcerned about their welfare. So, there is nothing we can do than to go ahead with the strike.

“We have been reporting to the government but nothing has come out of it. The state government called us to a meeting but nothing came out of the meeting. We are still waiting for them to call another meeting.

“We will still present our demands to them and if they are ready to address them and we see their commitment, we will not go ahead with the strike. But if they are not ready, then there is no going back on the strike.”

The National President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Williams Akporeha, and the General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi, had in a statement issued on Friday directed tanker drivers to begin the withdrawal of their services as from 12:midnight on Monday.
PoliticsOba Of Benin: I Am Not Against Any Candidate, I Stand With Edo People by Kwanza(op): 4:36pm On Aug 09, 2020
Oba of Benin, the Ewuare N’Ogidgan II, says the Palace does not meddle into partisan politics and has no special candidate when it comes to who will become governor of Edo State.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qTeN4DuMUk

The revered monarch stated this on Saturday when he received the All Progressives Congress’ candidate for the forthcoming election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and other governors elected under the platform of APC.

The entourage visited the Oba at his Palace in Benin City, Edo State, during the flag-off of the party’s governorship campaign in the state.

While praying for the APC’s candidate, Oba Ewuare, said the Palace of the Oba of Benin does not choose any side when it comes to politics, but can only go with the will of the Edo people.

“I want to stress that no matter what anybody might think, we will remain non-partisan because we are expected as we are perceived by our people, because of the expectations of our people, and because of the laid down rules and guidelines of our ancestors, we must be a father to everybody.

“We are not expected to lean either way to this or to that, to anybody, because we see every candidate as our children, so we pray for everybody. We can’t lean towards a particular candidate, however, only God and our ancestors, know the mind of man,” Oba Ewuare stated.

He, however, noted that the Palace has not been happy with the recent events in the state and he advised that everyone should pray for a peaceful election in Edo State.

“There is nothing as powerful as prayers. As you go about your campaign, go about it peacefully and without bitterness,” the Oba of Benin told members of the APC present at his palace on Saturday.

The Oba advised all players in the Edo political scene to avoid conflict as they go about their political campaigns, stressing that the Palace is not against any candidate and that when the people have chosen their leader via the ballot box, then it is only customary that he as king will pray for chosen one so that the governor may succeed in office.

PoliticsCourt Sacks Zamfara APC Excos by Kwanza(op): 7:51pm On Aug 07, 2020
A high court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State capital, on Friday dissolved the executive council members of wards, local government and state levels of the All Progressive Congress in the state.

Alhaji Surajo Garba and 138 others, who are political allies of Senator Kabir Garba Marafa had earlier sued the state party executive council members challenging the 2018 party Congress. They said that there were irregularities and that they were disenfranchised.

Delivering the judgement that took about four hours, Justice Bello Tukur Gummi, said the complaints by Alhaji Surajo Garba and 138 that they were disenfranchised during the 2018 party Congress was genuine.

The court then dissolved all executive council members of the party at all levels, asking them to stop parading themselves as party leaders.

The court then ordered for fresh congress in which due process should be followed and level playing ground be given to all members.

Counsel to Alhaji Surajo Garba, Barrister Misbahu Salaudeen told Daily Trust that the court had learnt that members of the party were disenfranchised which led to the dissolution of the party executives at levels.

However, the counsel to the state party executives, Barrister Kelechi Odeoyegbo, said they would study the judgement and may appeal.

Politics17 Edo Lawmakers Claim To Have Impeached Assembly Speaker by Kwanza(op): 4:28pm On Aug 06, 2020
Seventeen lawmakers of the Edo State House of Assembly, including 14 members whose seats have been previously declared vacant, claim that they have impeached the Speaker of the House, Francis Okiye, and his deputy, Roland Asoro.

The decision was taken at a private location in the state capital, hours after security officials took over the State Assembly Complex and some men attacked the building, destroying parts of it.

At the meeting, the 14 lawmakers-elect were, first, sworn in and then, together with three other lawmakers who recently pledged their allegiance to Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed to have impeached the Speaker and his deputy, Roland Asoro.

The Edo State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a crisis since 2019, one that has now been worsened by the buildup to the governorship elections in the state.

Twenty-four lawmakers were elected from the 24 constituencies during the 2019 general elections. However, only 10 of them were inaugurated on July 17 of the same year, sparking a controversy that included intervention from the National Assembly.

Five of the 10 lawmakers that were inaugurated including the Deputy Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, had declared support for Ize-Iyamu last week, after accusing Governor Obaseki of rendering the legislature in the state useless.

In retaliation, four of the five inaugurated lawmakers met on Wednesday and impeached Idiaye, replacing him with Asoro.

But the lawmakers loyal to Ize-Iyamu claimed to have impeached him and the Speaker, Okiye.

PoliticsBoko Haram Members Observe Eid Prayers In Niger State by Kwanza(op): 3:20pm On Aug 05, 2020
Boko Haram Releases Footage Of Members Observing Eid Prayers In Niger State

The Shekau-led faction of BH has released its first video exclusively featuring members claiming to be from Niger State.

It shows about one hundred persons praying Eid in the heart of a bush before showing three fighters sending Eid greetings in Hausa, English and Fulfulde.

It’s interesting that two of the fighters were respectively wearing Nigerian military & police uniforms. This indicates that they might’ve recently killed security forces and got their uniforms. This is because in their past video, the only speaker from Niger was in mufti.

This video, if genuine, is further evidence that BH has expanded to the northcentral. The dense forest there is a perfect haven for terrorists and if the group is able to consolidate its presence in Niger, it can easily target Abuja as well as to other states like Kwara and Kogi.

I won’t get tired of urging the FG and the Niger State Govt to take this threat seriously. We shouldn’t wait until the situation gets out of control before we start running helter-skelter. We better nip this challenge from the bud before it grows too gigantic to be uprooted.

PoliticsRevolution Now: Sowore’s Ultimate Aim Is To Destabiliise The Country – BMO by Kwanza(op): 11:47am On Aug 05, 2020
The planned protests by the Coalition for Revolution, conveners of the “Revolution Now” protests, is only a subterfuge.

It is, in fact, another attempt by the anarchist Omoyele Sowore to actualise his desire for chaos and destabilisation, the Buhari Media Organization (BMO) has warned.

“Security agents, including the Directorate of State Services (DSS) must understand that what is being touted as a protest against corruption, is not what it is. It is that notorious group making an attempt to push its agenda of “revolution” under a seemingly innocuous umbrella.

In a press statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, BMO called on security agents and government prosecutors to take notice of the potential breach of Mr Sowore’s bail conditions.

The group recalled that one of the conditions for Sowore bail by the court was that he was not to attend or participate in any form of rallies or protests pending the determination of the charges against him.

“A protest by Sowore’s Revolution Now Group is a protest by Sowore, albeit by proxy. He is the planner and it should be seen for the subterfuge that it is. The objectives of this sinister and dangerous group have not changed. What we have here is Sowore playing puppeteer over the protesters to do his bidding.

“We call on the prosecutors of Sowore’s matter, the DSS and the courts not to take this breach lightly.”

It is recalled that the DSS had warned, a few weeks ago, that there were plans by some persons to destabilise the country.

The Buhari Media Organization stated that, that warning was not unconnected with the evil plans by Mr Sowore and his men to start an uprising in the country.

PoliticsEkiti Workers Suspend Strike by Kwanza(op): 2:24pm On Aug 03, 2020
The organised labour in Ekiti State on Monday called off the three-day warning strike embarked upon in the state public service over welfare and other issues.

The organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and Joint Negotiating Council, had on Sunday ordered the commencement of the strike on Monday following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it earlier issued to the state government.

In the resolutions at the end of meeting between the state government and organised labour made available to journalists on Monday, it was stated that the strike had been called off “immediately”.

The document, entitled “Resolutions at the meeting of the meeting of the state government with the organised labour on the outstanding welfare issues of Ekiti State workers” was signed by the Head of Service, Mrs Peju Babafemi; the Senior Special Assistant Labour, Chief Olayemi Esan; and Permanent Secretary, Service Matters, Mr Bayo Opeyemi for the government.

Signatories on the side of Labour are the state chairmen of NLC, Kolapo Olatunde; TUC, Sola Adigun; and JNC, Kayode Fatomiluyi; and the secretaries of JNC, Gbenga Olowoyo; TUC, Kuloogun Lawrence; and NLC, Taiwo Akinyemi.

Among the resolutions are “that state government will ensure continuous payment of the monthly gross salaries; and that payment of the financial benefits of 2015 promotion will be implemented in September while payments for 2017, 2017, 2018 and 2019 will follow”.

Others are “that outstanding deductions for the months of May and June 2020 will be paid in phases; and that government will pay the outstanding deductions, salaries and leave bonuses in phases”.

It was also resolved at the meeting “that other issues affecting public service relating to service matters shall be looked into in due course, and that negotiation on the implementation of the minimum wage and the consequential adjustment will resume as soon as COVID-19 subsides”.

PoliticsInaccurate Reporting On Sale Of Power On Credit Needs To Be Corrected - Garba by Kwanza(op): 4:12pm On Jul 28, 2020
Earlier thread: https://www.nairaland.com/6017391/nigeria-exports-81.48bn-electricity-credit

PUNCH’S INACCURATE REPORTING ON THE SALE OF POWER TO NEIGHBOURING NATIONS NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED

It is most disappointing that sensationalism has dominated the thinking and ethos of institutions that citizens look up to with trust, confidence and reliability. Monday edition of the Punch checks all the boxes in terms of an abject failure to honour these time-tested traditions with its news piece: “NIGERIA EXPORTS USD81.48bn ELECTRICITY ON CREDIT AS COUNTRY’S BLACKOUT PERSISTS,” is to say the least, hyperbolic and terribly misleading.

Apart from the fact that the figure quoted is far from accurate, out-dated and therefore not reflective of the current reality, the overall cost of power generated and sold by Nigeria in the period covered by report is not anywhere close to what was mentioned by the paper.

The actual cost of electricity generated within the said timeframe (2018-2019) by all the electricity generation companies in Nigeria was about N1.2 trillion ($4 billion).

Over 90% of the electricity generated was distributed and consumed by consumers across the 11 electricity distribution companies in the country.

Power exported to Niger, Benin and Togo based on Multilateral Energy Sales Agreement with the Government of Nigeria is on the basis that they would not dam the waters that feed our major power plants in Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba.

As of the last review in 2019, the amount of indebtedness to all three customers stood at $69 million, subsequent upon which several payments were made to NBET. Much of this has been repaid by the debtor nations.

As of today, Niger owes only USD 16 million and Benin, USD 4 million, adding up to the Naira equivalent of about N1.2bn.

The essence of said bilateral agreements, by which we give them power and they do not build dams on the River Niger means that Nigeria and her brotherly neighbours had avoided the unfolding situation of the Nile River between the sovereign states of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.

In the future, we advise the newspaper to seek clarity from the market operator which is the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN. This process of fact checking only :improves your standing in the public arena.

PoliticsDSS Uncovers Plot By Persons, Groups To ‘Destabilise’ Nigeria by Kwanza(op): 6:05pm On Jul 27, 2020
The Department of State Services (DSS) has raised the alarm over what it says is a plot by some prominent personalities and groups to ‘destabilise’ the country.

The DSS said the unpatriotic groups are taking advantage of the existing security situations in some parts of the country to carry out their plan.

DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, who made this known in a statement on Monday, said it would not fold its arm to watch anyone, no matter how highly placed, to cause a breakdown of law and order in the country.

To ensure the safety of all and the peace and stability of the country, Afunaya said the DSS was working with relevant authorities and sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure that the sinister objective is not achieved.

The statement reads:

‘The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered plans by some persons and groups desirous of taking advantage of the latest developments in parts of the country to destabilise it.

‘Some prominent personalities and socio-cultural groups have resorted to divisive acts through inciting statements aimed at pitting individuals, groups and ethnic nationalities against another. The Service is, without doubt, aware of these plans and their sponsors.

‘Consequently, it warns that it will no longer tolerate the orchestrations by subversive and unscrupulous elements to cause a breakdown of law and order in the country.

‘In this regard, it is working assiduously with relevant authorities and sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure that the sinister objective is not achieved.

‘The Service reiterates its commitment to the internal security of Nigeria and will, within the confines of the law, decisively deal with planners of the mayhem.

‘Law-abiding citizens are urged to go about their normal businesses and disregard the antics of agents of destabilisation.

‘They should, however, avail the Service and related agencies with useful information about the activities of criminals and groups intent on instigating violence in the country.’
