PoliticsGovernor Obaseki: I Will Accept Defeat In Fair Contest by Kwanza(op): 8:47pm On Sep 07, 2020
The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said he would accept his defeat in the upcoming gubernatorial elections provided the elections is free and fair.

The Governor, however, said the issue of him losing the election is irrelevant, saying there is no strong opposition in the elections.

Obaseki, who spoke in an interview with journalists shortly after meeting with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, in Abuja, expressed fears over the security situation in the State, where violence has been recorded without any arrest, said he was satisfied with the outcome of his meeting with the IGP.

Asked what his reaction would be if he loses in the elections, Obaseki said: ‘First, if you have been watching you will see that the election is almost a no contest because we can’t even find the opposition party in the field. So, the issue of me losing is very, very remote, except something miracpus happens. If I lose in a fair contest, as a democrat, I will accept it. But, from what we know today and from evidence of what is available, Edo people have spoken and we just want an opportunity for them to express their views on that day. So, our concern is that people be allowed to vote peacefully and express themselves the way decide.’

PoliticsAttacks on Nigerians: Ghana’s president assures ceasefire ― Gbajabiamila by Kwanza(op):
The President of Ghana, Prof. Nana Akufo Ado has assured the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila that his government will review its hostile trade policy against Nigerians in that country.

He said the government will “consider the resolutions reached at the ‘Legislative Diplomacy Bilateral Meeting’ between Nigeria and Ghana’s senior legislators on 2nd September 2020, at the Ghanaian Parliament House”.

The Ghanian president, according to a statement issued by the spokesman of the House, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, Akufo Ado, gave the assurance when the Speaker of Ghana’s parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, upon completion of the 2-day extensive dialogue, led his Nigerian counterpart on a courtesy visit to the President at the Jubilee House, Accra, Ghana on Thursday.

“The legislative diplomacy dialogue became imperative as the parliaments of the two countries, sought modalities to resolve challenges and provide an enabling business environment for foreign traders including Nigerians doing business in Ghana. Several foreign businesses, many Nigerian-owned, in Ghana have been facing challenges in the demand for $1m capital base for foreign traders, as enshrined in the Ghana Investment Promotion Center GIPC Act (2013)”.

He said while responding to a request by Nigeria’s Speaker, Rep. Gbajabiamila for a review of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act to make certain concessions, “President Akufo-Addo said the request was in order as it “makes a lot of sense”

He said “The Ghanaian President, who expressed satisfaction with Gbajabiamila’s visit, endorsed his proposal for the establishment of a ‘Nigeria-Ghana Business Council’ established by law in both countries, and he additionally suggested the setting up of a joint ministerial committee between the two countries that will “shepherd” issues between Ghana and Nigeria” .

The Ghanian President, according to the President, “told Gbajabiamila he would also raise the issue with President Muhammadu Buhari when they meet at the ECOWAS Summit on Monday”.

“I think the way forward, which is really what matters in situations like this, that is being suggested, one that I find very acceptable, the idea of legislation, a Nigeria-Ghana business council that will superintendent trade matters and investment matters between our two countries, maybe long overdue”, Akufo Addo, said.

According to the statement, the President also said “The time has come for us to take these worthwhile steps. I suggested to Mr President that it will be a good idea to set up a joint ministerial committee of ministers from both sides who will be responsible for shepherding Ghana and Nigeria issues, reporting to both presidents at any one time, and that is how they should be resolved.”

“I am hoping when I see him on Monday for the ECOWAS summit, we can advance these discussions and come to a final conclusion.

“The way you yourselves have come about this matter is very satisfactory, and it requires our support. The review that you are asking for, why not? if it works in our mutual perspectives, we can take it for granted that your request will be taken seriously. We will have a look at it.”

Earlier, Gbajabiamila, who was in the company of some of his colleagues in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, which included the Chairmen of House Committees on Foreign Affairs, Media and Public Affairs , Deputy chairmen of committee on Diaspora , Federal road safety and a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, , told the Ghanaian President at the Jubilee House, that they were in Ghana to make efforts through parliamentary diplomacy to resolve the issues at stake”

“We have appealed to the (Ghanaian) Parliament that if it’s possible at all to look again at the issues, as far as the Ghana Investment Promotion Center Act is concerned, they should please do so.”

“If it is not possible, then let us look at ways the pain can be reduced, like those expectations required in the law.”

“We’ve proffered a few suggestions one of which is the establishment of Ghana Nigeria Business Council backed by legislation on both sides,” Gbajabiamila said.

Meanwhile, in a communique issued jointly at the end of the bilateral meeting between members of the two Parliaments led by their respective Speakers, Gbajabiamila and Prof. Mike Oquaye, it was resolved that “measures will be adopted to support law-abiding traders to properly regularise their business operations to alleviate the trade challenges occasioned by the alleged closure of the retail stores, in view of the ravaging impact of Covid-19 pandemic on businesses and families in both countries.”

They acknowledged that many stakeholders in the retail sector have limited appreciation of the trade laws of Ghana, in particular, Section 28 of the GIPC Act, which provides for the conditions under which non-Ghanaians can engage in trading activities and urged the relevant regulatory authorities including the GIPC and Trade Attaches of foreign missions to educate their citizens on the trade laws.

They equally emphasized the need to respect the sovereignty of Member States of ECOWAS and their laws but, in doing so, efforts must be made to ensure that the ECOWAS Agenda for free movement of people and goods in furtherance of a shared and prosperous future of citizens of the sub-region is not compromised.

“A meeting will be held between the Trade and Foreign Affairs Committees of both Legislatures to deliberate on applications of Trade Laws, in particular, the GIPC Act, 2013 (Act 865) and make recommendations for appropriate solutions; and

“A Joint Committee will be established composed of Members of both Legislatures to explore the possible passage of reciprocal legislation, which could be potentially called the “Ghana-Nigeria Friendship Act” which shall propose “Ghana-Nigeria Business Council” to provide a framework to sustain the friendship and benefits to citizens of the two nations”, according to Rep. Kalu.

He added that ” the departure from Ghana yesterday, Gbajabiamila expressed his gratitude to his counterpart for his statesmanship, leadership and hospitality, which made it possible for both countries to resolve thorny issues through legislative diplomacy”.

PoliticsFarooq Kperogi: Fani-Kayode Libel Suit Against Daily Trust Needless Self-Injury by Kwanza(op): 2:16pm On Sep 02, 2020

Fani-Kayode's Libel Suit Against Daily Trust is Needless Self-Injury--THREAD

Whoever advised Femi Fani-Kayode to sue Daily Trust over a scathingly unflattering opinion article that an occasional contributor to the paper's opinion pages wrote about him doesn't love him. Most of the unsparingly virulent things the writer wrote about Fani-Kayode qualify as opinion and fair comment in media law and are not actionable.

The only potentially libelous statement in the piece is the claim that Fani-Kayode is a drug addict who had been treated, without success, in psychiatric hospitals in Ghana (and other places) but who hasn't recovered from his drug addiction. That's not an opinion that enjoys constitutional protection; it is a statement that implies a definitive habit of moral turpitude that can be proven to be either true or false.

Nonetheless, truth is a defense in libel. If FFK goes ahead with the lawsuit, Daily Trust would be compelled to prove that he was indeed a drug addict who had been treated at psychiatric hospitals. In proving this, Daily Trust’s legal team would expose FFK to even more public
ridicule.

But, even worse, if Daily Trust finally proves it, Fani-Kayode's reputation would be so irretrievably sullied that he would become what defamation lawyers call a “libel-proof plaintiff,” that is, someone whose reputation is already so thoroughly damaged that no libelous statement can damage it further. Plus, he is a public figure who seeks out the media, who willfully thrusts himself into public consciousness, who seeks to influence national conversations, and who has the capacity to respond to whatever dirt that is thrown at him.

Such people have a hard time winning a libel case. If the man is wise, he should just lick his wounds quietly and withdraw his threat against Daily Trust. It would hurt him more than it would help him.

I may write further on this in my back-page column in the Saturday Tribune.

SportsGuardiola Makes Shock U-turn On Messi Deal by Kwanza(op): 2:53pm On Sep 01, 2020
Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has made a big u-turn on his chase for Lionel Messi, Mundo Deportivo reports.

It is understood that City are willing to abandon the idea of signing Messi from Barcelona this summer.

The former Premier League champions believe the transfer is not financially viable, with Barca insisting the 33-year-old will not leave as a free agent.

LaLiga have also issued a statement, making it clear that any potential buyer must pay Messi’s €700 million release clause.

Guardiola has reportedly told the six-time Ballon d’Or winner it would be best for him to stay at the Camp Nou, where he has been since 13.

City does not want to attract further attention from football authorities, having already been forced to pay a €10 million fine this year for breaching UEFA rules.

PoliticsLagos Administrator-General Emphasises Importance Of Writing Wills by Kwanza(op): 9:12pm On Aug 30, 2020
LAGOS ADMINISTRATOR-GENERAL EMPHASISES IMPORTANCE OF WRITING WILLS

The Lagos State Administrator-General, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, has called on all residents to embrace the culture of writing their Wills while they are still hale hearty and save their families from avoidable legal cases and family acrimony after death.

The Administrator-General, who made the call recently while featuring on a Lagos Television (LTV) programme, titled “Oro To Nlo”, specifically pleaded with family breadwinners, who are 40 years of age and above, not to trivialise the issue of writing their Wills.

She noted that the acrimony and disharmony that families experience, when the breadwinner of the family dies intestate, can be avoided if individuals are proactive and put their houses in order before they answer their maker's call.

Rotimi further admonished women contemplating marriage in the State to ensure that they enter into statutory marriages, stressing that the law of the State only recognises a legally married woman.

In her words, "when a husband dies, his legally married wife is entitled to 1/3 of his estate but that is not the case for women without a statutory marriage. However, the law does not discriminate between children born legitimately and those born outside the marriage. Where there is paternity issue about children, this can be resolved through DNA to confirm the true paternity”.

While encouraging residents, who have challenges on issues that border on the Will and its execution, to take advantage of the Office of the Administrator-General and Public Trustees in the Ministry of Justice, Alausa Secretariat, Rotimi disclosed that the Office will not only serve as the Executor of the Will but also as the Administrator of estates, which includes when the beneficiaries are minors or in the diaspora.

TravelCrashed Bell Helicopter Declared Non-Airworthy 3 Years Ago, Owners Tricked NCAA by Kwanza(op): 11:51am On Aug 29, 2020
REVEALED: Crashed Helicopter Was Declared Non-airworthy Three Years Ago, Owners Tricked NCAA To Obtain Operational License

A Bell 206-B3 helicopter with registration number 5N-BQW, which crashed on Salvation Road, Opebi, Lagos State, on Friday, was declared non-airworthy three years ago, SaharaReporters can report.

The helicopter crashed with three persons onboard.

While two crew members died on the spot, the third person earlier rescued and taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, later died.

Documents seen by SaharaReporters showed that the crashed helicopter was declared non-airworthy in 2017 by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

The aircraft was also used in the past by different Nigerian airline operators to dupe NCAA into issuing them Air Operators’ Certificates.

The AOC, which authorises an operator to carry out specific commercial air transport operations, is issued once the NCAA was satisfied that the operator had the required personnel, assets, and systems to ensure the safety of its employees and general public.

An operator applying for AOC is required to have an air transport license from the NCAA, which permits it to operate scheduled passenger or cargo air services in the country.

A source told SaharaReporters that some of the operators use same helicopters previously presented by others to obtain AOCs from the NCAA including the ill-fated Bell 206-3 aircraft with registration number 5N-BQW.

The crashed aircraft, the source disclosed, was used at different times by Omni-Blue Aviation Services and Quorum Aviation to obtain AOCs from the NCAA.

“The ill-fated copter was declared non-airworthy in 2017 when it was discovered that most of the equipment on board have expired.

"Then, Quorum Aviation had approached the NCAA for AOC license and it was discovered that the helicopter was faulty. NCAA also accused the management of refusing to maintain the engine of the aircraft.

“How Quorum Aviation was cleared to fly the aircraft after that was what I can’t really say.

“Imagine in 2016, Omni-Blue Aviation Services borrowed this crashed Bell 206-3 helicopter to obtain AOC from NCAA. A year after, Quorum Aviation applied for AOC with same helicopter,” he said.

Investigation into the cause of Friday's crash is currently ongoing.

Part of the building the helicopter crashed into was destroyed while some vehicles around the place were also damaged as a result of the incident.

PoliticsUsoro Bows Out, As Akpata Takes Over As 30th President Of NBA by Kwanza(op): 10:24pm On Aug 28, 2020
….vows to resist moves to form splinter body

Mr. Olumide Akpata was on Friday sworn in as the 30th President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA.

Akpata is the first non-Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, to lead the NBA in years, having defeated two SANs in an online election the legal body conducted between July 29 and July 30.

Akpata was sworn in by the immediate past National President of the NBA, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, at exactly 7:05PM, in a ceremony that held at the National Headquarters of the association in Abuja.

Motion for the dissolution of the Usoro-led National Executive Committee of the legal body was moved and okayed at exactly 7:13pm, just as the new NBA President, performed his first assignment by swearing in other members of his cabinet.

In his maiden address, Akpata, said he would spend the next 24 months focusing on holistic reforms in the association, as well as welfare of lawyers across the federation.

He said his emergence as new leader of the legal body was “ochestrated by the Almighty who sees the affairs of men”, saying he would ensure a truly all inclusive Bar that would be deviod of class segregation.

Recalling that he had a near death experience in the past, Akpata, thanked God for the gift of life.

“God preserved my life for a day like this”, he stated, attributing his election success to massive support he got from young lawyers.

“I must acknowledge the role of young lawyers. I am eternally grateful to all the young lawyers who reposed their confidence in me. I will work hard with my team to justify this trust”.

While thanking the two SANs that also vied for the NBA Presidency, Akpata, urged them to support his administration to ensure that the association remained united as one family, stressing that it was the only way the Bar could be revitalized.

The new NBA President described himself as “a bridge”, saying he emerged to build rapport between the young and old members of the Bar.

He said it was unfortunate that some persons reportedly tried to split the association by forming an alternative body.

“This is rather unfortunate for our egalitarian association. I plead with all Nigerian lawyers to bear this philosophy of unity of the Bar in mind”.

He said the NBA must always speak with one mind.

“Now is the time to come together because a divided Bar is definitely a defeated Bar”.

Akpata said though his election was free and fair and reflected the wish of Nigerian lawyers, he said his administration would however embark on a holistic electoral reform with a view to addressing some glitches that were noticed during the election.

“We need to manage to our electoral process better”, he stated, and consequently constituted a 10-man election review Committee to be headed by Ayo Akitunde SAN, with Mike Igini as the deputy Chairman.

Aside stressing the need for effective database of lawyers in the country, Akpata, said he would tackle both the issue of welfare of legal practitioners and what he termed as “erosion of ethical values” in the profession.

“Lack of institutional capacity is what our association has suffered over the years. We have to hit the ground running immediately”.

He said the NBA under his watch would fight against the encroachment of works that are the exclusive reserve of lawyers, by members of other professions, including banks.

“It is no longer business as usual”, Akpata maintained, adding that the NBA would also facilitate justice sector reforms, including the yardstick for the conferment of SAN rank on lawyers.

Meanwhile, earlier, the former President of the NBA, Usoro, SAN, dismissed report on emergence of an alternative association of lawyers, as work of distractors.

He said: “In recent times, I have heard comments that suggested that some of our people may be looking at alternative Bar.

“We are saying that there is no alternative to a united and indivisible Bar. We are stronger together. Whatever differences we have, we have to settle them in house. There is no room for anybody to break away.

“I did not take the report I saw in the media yesterday serious.

“I am convinced that it was the work of distractors. We must not allow them. We must be one united and indivisible Bar.

“That is the only way we can truly protect and promote the rule of law. We must remember that the rule of law does not have any religion, ethnic or social class.

“We must avoid having to make our judgements and comments concerning the Bar, based on ethnicity, religion or class. We must avoid bring in those things that distract the outside world. We must not bring them to the house.

“We must kick them out and remain one indivisible Nigerian Bar Association”.

Likewise, in his contribution at the event, human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, maintained that any attempt to divide the Bar would be resisted.

“I call them to drop all these issues of trying to form an Alternative Bar. Progressive forces in this country and within the Bar, most members who know where we are coming from will resist it”.

He argued that it would be similar to people seeking to create Southern Nigerian Army, Western Nigerian Port Authority, Southern Nigeria NNPC, among others.

“Where then are we heading to? That will amount to total balkanization of the country”, Ozekhome added.

Report had emerged on Thursday that some lawyers of Northern extraction had formed a new ‘Nigerian Bar Association’ with the aim of protecting their interests as encapsulated under Section 40 of the Constitution.

In a statement reportedly signed by arrowheads of the group,Nuhu Ibrahim and Abdulbasit Suleiman, they claimed that recent happenings in the legal body, including the dis-invitation of Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai as a speaker in the just concluded conference of the NBA, exposed the inability of the association to manage and contain the heterogeneity of its members.

The duo said the new group would consult other senior lawyers from the northern extraction so as to co-opt them into the new umbrella body of lawyers from the region.

PoliticsSenate To Pass Social Media Bill Despite Rejection By Nigerians -SaharaReporters by Kwanza(op): 4:12pm On Aug 28, 2020
Nigerian Senate To Pass Social Media Bill Despite Rejection By Nigerians

The Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulation and Other Related Matters Bill 2019 popularly known as the social media bill, is one of the bills before the Nigerian Senate led by Ahmed Lawan.

SaharaReporters gathered that the Nigerian Senate has concluded a “signed, sealed and delivered” plot to pass the social media bill once the it resumes plenary on September 15.

According to a top source in the Senate, who pleaded anonymity, the upper legislative arm is determined to pass the heinous bill despite the immense rejection by majority of Nigerians.

“They have already concluded plans to pass the bill. They are going to hide behind the COVID-19 issue and other national issues and pass the bill without delay. Their plan is to do it once they resume. It is already signed,” the source told SaharaReporters.

Recall that SaharaReporters reported that the social media bill was rejected by majority of Nigerians during the public hearing of the bill in March.

It will also be recalled that the bill had been rumored to be an “executive bill”, thus making its passage non-negotiable by the lawmakers, who have shown that they were willing to support anything from the presidency.

When asked whether the Senate’s plan had always been to pass the bill without considering public opinion, the source told SaharaReporters, “I am not sure about that, but they believe that Nigerians will accept it and move on the same way they have accepted the Broadcasting Code.”

The reviewed Broadcasting Code was recently passed into law for media organizations in Nigeria.

The reviewed code increased the fine for hate speech from N500,000 to N1m among other things and has already been used in sanctioning Nigeria Info, a radio station, following a recent interview in which a guest criticized the government on one of its popular programmes.

According to its objectives, the social media bill will enable the Nigeria Police Force to “detect, control and safeguard against coordinated inauthentic behaviour and other misuses of online accounts”.

The bill proposes up to N5m or three years imprisonment or both for defaulters.

All attempts to reach Senator Muhammed Sani Musa; sponsor of the social media bill, and Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, on the issue proved abortive as both were unreachable on their official telephone lines.

SportsEberechi Eze Signs 5-Year Deal With Crystal Palace by Kwanza(op): 10:26am On Aug 28, 2020
Eberechi Eze has signed a five-year contract with Crystal Palace F.C., becoming the club’s second arrival of the summer 2020 transfer window.

South London born Eze, 22, has risen through the ranks at Queens Park Rangers after joining them in 2016. An FA Cup debut followed in January 2017 and later that year, Eze made 22 appearances in a half-season loan to Wycombe Wanderers.

Then still a teenager, the attack-minded youngster played a key role in the Chairboys’ promotion to League One that season, scoring five goals - including a brace against Cambridge United.

On his return to QPR, Eze established himself as a regular first-team player, being awarded the No.10 shirt and a three-year contract in 2018. He leaves the Hoops with 20 goals from 112 senior games, collecting Supporters’ Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Junior Hoops Player of the Year last season as well as being shortlisted for PFA Player of the Year.

Internationally, Eze has represented England at both Under-20 and Under-21 level, and was named in the latest U21 squad earlier this week.

After putting pen to paper with Palace, Eze said: "As a football club, I feel like there are great players here and it’s a brilliant opportunity for me to come and be with these players, to link up with them and to really push on."

Crystal Palace Chairman, Steve Parish, added: "Eberechi is a player whose development we have followed closely. We are delighted he has chosen to sign for us over the other clubs that were interested and we feel that this is the right club for him to continue his development.

"With our Academy recently securing Category 1 status, this further illustrates our focus on youth as we look to consolidate and improve upon our position as a Premier League club."

PoliticsI Made History As First Afdb President To Be Re-elected With 100% Votes —Adesina by Kwanza(op):
President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, says he made history as the first president of the Bank to be re-elected via a hundred per cent votes.

Adesina spoke on Thursday in his acceptance speech to the Bank’s Board of Governors and other stakeholders.

The globally renowned development economist, World Food Prize Laureate and Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate said, “Of course, right now, the sound that is the loudest in my ears is the announcement of my re-election as President of the African Development Bank for a second term.”

Continuing, he said, “I am deeply grateful for the collective trust, strong confidence and support of our shareholders for electing me for a second term as President. It is yet another call for selfless service to Africa and the African Development Bank, to which I will passionately devote myself.

“We also made history by re-electing me by 100 percent votes via a vote. I became the first President of the bank in its history to be re-elected by 100 percent votes of all its shareholders and I am most grateful and very appreciative.

“This was very important; it shows the transparency of our bank, it shows your demonstrated weight of support behind my vision.

“It shows a very clear and strong mandate from all shareholders to go and implement the vision, it shows that all voices were heard, it shows that we are true to the constitutive test of our bank.

“The future beckons us for a more developed Africa and a much stronger and resilient African Development Bank Group. We will build on the strong foundations of success in the past five years, while further strengthening the institution, for greater effectiveness and impacts.”

As newly re-elected President, Dr. Adesina, a former Nigerian Minister of Agriculture, will begin his new term on September 1, 2020.

The election result, which gave him a hundred percent of votes of all regional and non-regional members of the Bank, was announced by the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Bank, Mrs. Niale Kaba, Minister of National Planning of Côte d’Ivoire.

The election took place on the final day of the 2020 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group, which was held virtually for the first time in the Bank’s history.

A message posted on the Bank’s website quoted the the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Bank, Mrs. Niale Kaba, who is also a Minister of National Planning of Côte d’Ivoire as saying, “I am delighted that the Board of Governors has re-elected Dr. Adesina for a second term in office as President. As shareholders, we strongly support the Bank and will give him all the necessary support to carry forward and implement his compelling vision for the Bank over the next five years.”

The Bank noted that Adesina’s first term focused on the bold new agenda for the Bank Group based on five development priorities known as the High 5s: Light up and Power Africa; Feed Africa; Industrialize Africa; Integrate Africa; and Improve the Quality of Life for the People of Africa.

“During Adesina’s first term, the Bank achieved impactful results on the lives of 335 million Africans, including: 18 million people with access to electricity; 141 million people benefiting from improved agricultural technologies for food security; 15 million people benefiting from access to finance from private investments; 101 million people provided with access to improved transport; and 60 million people gaining access to water and sanitation.

“The Bank has maintained its AAA-ratings by all major global credit rating agencies for five years in a row. The Board of Governors of the Bank Group approved a 125% increase in the General Capital of the Bank, raising its capital from $93 billion to $208 billion, the largest in the history of the Bank.

“The African Development Fund received a $7.6 billion pledge from donors, a 32% increase, for support to low-income countries and fragile states. The Bank was ranked the 4th most transparent institution globally by Publish What You Fund, bolstering its strong governance credentials for transparency and accountability.

“Under Adesina’s leadership, the African Development Bank’s Board of Directors approved a $10 billion facility to support African countries to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Bank also launched a $3bn COVID-19 social bond on the global capital markets, the highest US dollar denominated social bond ever in world history, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, Luxembourg Stock Exchange and NASDAQ,” it added.

SportsBrazil Footballer Ronaldinho Released In Paraguay by Kwanza(op): 9:35am On Aug 25, 2020
Earlier thread:https://www.nairaland.com/5724727/fake-passport-judge-remands-ronaldinho#87261213

Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho has been released from house arrest in Paraguay after his detention for holding a forged passport.

The World Cup winner and his brother spent one month behind bars and another four detained in a luxury hotel in the capital Asuncion on bail.

Both have now been released, although they must pay $200,000 (£153,000) in damages between them.

Ronaldinho had a glittering football career before his retirement in 2015.

He helped Brazil to their fifth World Cup victory in 2002 and won the Champions League and two La Liga titles with Spanish football club Barcelona, as well as playing for Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

The decade of downfall that put a star behind bars
In March he and his brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira - who is also his business manager - were detained after allegedly using fake passports to enter Paraguay.

Ronaldinho was travelling to the country to promote a campaign for underprivileged children. He spent his 40th birthday in a Paraguayan prison before the pair paid bail and moved to a luxury hotel under house arrest.

Prosecutors did not think the footballer had any role getting the false passports, but they believed his brother knew they were fake. Both however have maintained their innocence.

"The precautionary measure of arrest is lifted, there are no more restrictions placed by Paraguayan justice," Judge Gustavo Amarilla told the court on Monday.

PoliticsAPC NWC: Abia Youth Leader Drags Governor Buni, 11 Others To Court by Kwanza(op):
The Federal High Court, Abuja, Monday, ordered substituted service of court processes on Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, who is Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and 11 others in a suit challenging the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo ordered that the summons be pasted at the entrance of the National Secretariat of the APC at No: 40, Blantyre Street, Wuse, Abuja.

This followed complaint by plaintiff in the matter, Mr Kalu Kalu, that the respondents had been evading service of court summons since they got wind of the suit.

Others affected by the order are: Gov. Sani Bello of Niger State, Sen. Ken Nnamani, Isiaka Oyebola, Dr James Lalu, Sen. Abubakar Yusuf, Rep. Akinyemi Olaide, David Lyon, Prof. Tahir Mamman, Ismail Ahmed and Sen. Akpan Udoedehe.

In a ruling after an exparte motion was argued by the plaintiff on behalf of himself, Justice Taiwo ordered that the originating summons and other processes in the matter be served on 3rd to 14 defendants by posting same on the entrance gate of the APC Headquarters in Abuja, since the party is the second defendant in the matter.

The judge held that if the service was effected by the court bailiff as directed, it shall be deemed good and proper.

He then adjourned the matter till Sept. 4 for hearing.

Newsmen report that Kalu, a Youth Leader of the APC in Abia, is challenging the powers of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party to sack the national leaders barely two years out of their constitutionally guaranteed four-year term of office.

In the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/736/2020, the plaintiff asked for an order of the court, setting aside the dissolution of the NWC by APC’s NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa , Abuja, last month.

He also asked the court for an order restraining the National Caretaker Committee members led by Buni from parading themselves as national officers of the APC and from usurping the functions of the party’s NWC, among other prayers.

PoliticsGovernor Obaseki Recommended The Dethroning Of Uromi Monarch In 2016 - Edo APC by Kwanza(op): 7:19pm On Aug 22, 2020
The APC Media Campaign Council for the Edo Governorship election has accused Edo State Governor Mr Godwin Obaseki of pursuing the sanctioning of the Ojuromi of Uromi, HRH Anselm Aidenojie II, when he accused him of trying to block his emergence as the next Governor of the State by allegedly backing the PDP in 2016.

The APC campaign council, while condemning what it called the ‘divisive message’ of Governor Godwin Obaseki, at the Palace of the Ojuromi of Uromi, accused the PDP candidate of seeking to turn the people against each other to earn sympathy votes following his visible lack of achievements.

Governor Obaseki, in his visit to the monarch earlier in the week, charged the king and the people of Uromi to rescue Edo State from the grip of ‘destructive people’.

But in response to Governor Obaseki, the Chairman of the Edo APC Campaign Council, Mr John Mayaki,‎ said in a scathing statement:

‘Rather than regale the people of Uromi with an account of what his administration has managed to achieve in the last four years of his administration, Mr Godwin Obaseki went there with a divisive message seeking to breed bad blood in continuation of his ignoble strategy to poison the well of the campaign with hatred and intolerance.

‘Mr Godwin Obaseki has been rendered sleepless by the united stance of Edo people to put him out of his misery and end his unfortunate reign on the 19th of September, hence his desperate adoption of depraved tactics to engender confusion and chaos by dividing the people along ethnic and religious lines with targeted falsehood.

‘Obaseki’s unpalatable references to the 2016 saga involving the respected Ojuromi of Uromi, is uncalled for and disgraceful, especially as he was the one who recommended and forcefully fought for the dethronement of the monarch over alleged involvement with the PDP during the heat of the 2016 electioneering campaign.

‘As the Chairman of the Economic Team before he emerged the APC candidate in 2016, Obaseki undoubtedly had the ears of the Comrade Governor and it was he who consistently pursued the sanctioning of the Uromi monarch when he accused him (Ojuromi) of trying to block his emergence as the next Governor of the state by allegedly backing the PDP.

‘Otherwise, why did it take Governor Obaseki one year after assuming office before restoring the monarch into his position, if he was indeed sincere and not approving of his initial suspension cum deposition?

‘It is simply deceitful and fraudulent for the Governor to attempt to distance himself from a decision he recommended because he is now desperate for votes.

‘It is equally shameful that Mr Godwin Obaseki continues to drag ancient and respected traditional stools into his divisive politics. We expected a decent and sensible campaign from him and his party of tax-collectors but we are nonetheless unsurprised at the descent into the gutter because, after four years of abject failure, they have nothing noteworthy to sell to the people.’

SportsChidi Nwanu Speaks On Gang-up Against Westerhof At USA 94 by Kwanza(op): 3:54pm On Aug 22, 2020
Former Super Eagles and Anderlecht defender Chidi Nwanu has spoken on the gang-up against former Nigeria coach, Clemens Westerhof at the USA 94 world cup, and how it hindered the team’s progression at the tournament,

In an interview with Vanguard Sports, Nwanu was asked about the belief that if not for the gang-up against Westerhof, the USA ’94 team could have got to the final, he replied saying:

“I am telling you that we had all that was needed to win that World Cup because another thing was that we had officials that were only after their estacode which they had already gotten because it was too much for them. They robbed us, the players. Maybe they were more interested in going home because if you look at that match, you would feel bad we lost the way we did.”

He continued: “Why would somebody work against his team because he was not playing? Why would players gang up against the coach who felt that we needed to change hotel to have better concentration?

I was the one who stood up against them when we had a meeting with officials and I told them whoever left this place I would make sure they stoned him at the airport when we arrived. We had a lot of issues, some of the players went out, carrying women and some slept where they were not supposed to sleep. The coach wanted to change all that and they ganged up against him. Today I see some of them coming to the national team as a coach; something you destroyed?

I was so disappointed after the match against Italy because I was not ready to leave the World Cup at the time we left. It hindered a lot of things for me personally because I had a target. That was how I saw football. It was my calling and I gave everything into it.
