The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said he would accept his defeat in the upcoming gubernatorial elections provided the elections is free and fair. The Governor, however, said the issue of him losing the election is irrelevant, saying there is no strong opposition in the elections. Obaseki, who spoke in an interview with journalists shortly after meeting with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, in Abuja, expressed fears over the security situation in the State, where violence has been recorded without any arrest, said he was satisfied with the outcome of his meeting with the IGP. Asked what his reaction would be if he loses in the elections, Obaseki said: ‘First, if you have been watching you will see that the election is almost a no contest because we can’t even find the opposition party in the field. So, the issue of me losing is very, very remote, except something miracpus happens. If I lose in a fair contest, as a democrat, I will accept it. But, from what we know today and from evidence of what is available, Edo people have spoken and we just want an opportunity for them to express their views on that day. So, our concern is that people be allowed to vote peacefully and express themselves the way decide.’ https://www.today.ng/sport/football/governor-obaseki-accept-defeat-fair-contest-317021/amp?__twitter_impression=true Mynd44 Lalasticlala |

The President of Ghana, Prof. Nana Akufo Ado has assured the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila that his government will review its hostile trade policy against Nigerians in that country. He said the government will “consider the resolutions reached at the ‘Legislative Diplomacy Bilateral Meeting’ between Nigeria and Ghana’s senior legislators on 2nd September 2020, at the Ghanaian Parliament House”. The Ghanian president, according to a statement issued by the spokesman of the House, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, Akufo Ado, gave the assurance when the Speaker of Ghana’s parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, upon completion of the 2-day extensive dialogue, led his Nigerian counterpart on a courtesy visit to the President at the Jubilee House, Accra, Ghana on Thursday. “The legislative diplomacy dialogue became imperative as the parliaments of the two countries, sought modalities to resolve challenges and provide an enabling business environment for foreign traders including Nigerians doing business in Ghana. Several foreign businesses, many Nigerian-owned, in Ghana have been facing challenges in the demand for $1m capital base for foreign traders, as enshrined in the Ghana Investment Promotion Center GIPC Act (2013)”. He said while responding to a request by Nigeria’s Speaker, Rep. Gbajabiamila for a review of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act to make certain concessions, “President Akufo-Addo said the request was in order as it “makes a lot of sense” He said “The Ghanaian President, who expressed satisfaction with Gbajabiamila’s visit, endorsed his proposal for the establishment of a ‘Nigeria-Ghana Business Council’ established by law in both countries, and he additionally suggested the setting up of a joint ministerial committee between the two countries that will “shepherd” issues between Ghana and Nigeria” . The Ghanian President, according to the President, “told Gbajabiamila he would also raise the issue with President Muhammadu Buhari when they meet at the ECOWAS Summit on Monday”. “I think the way forward, which is really what matters in situations like this, that is being suggested, one that I find very acceptable, the idea of legislation, a Nigeria-Ghana business council that will superintendent trade matters and investment matters between our two countries, maybe long overdue”, Akufo Addo, said. According to the statement, the President also said “The time has come for us to take these worthwhile steps. I suggested to Mr President that it will be a good idea to set up a joint ministerial committee of ministers from both sides who will be responsible for shepherding Ghana and Nigeria issues, reporting to both presidents at any one time, and that is how they should be resolved.” “I am hoping when I see him on Monday for the ECOWAS summit, we can advance these discussions and come to a final conclusion. “The way you yourselves have come about this matter is very satisfactory, and it requires our support. The review that you are asking for, why not? if it works in our mutual perspectives, we can take it for granted that your request will be taken seriously. We will have a look at it.” Earlier, Gbajabiamila, who was in the company of some of his colleagues in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, which included the Chairmen of House Committees on Foreign Affairs, Media and Public Affairs , Deputy chairmen of committee on Diaspora , Federal road safety and a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, , told the Ghanaian President at the Jubilee House, that they were in Ghana to make efforts through parliamentary diplomacy to resolve the issues at stake” “We have appealed to the (Ghanaian) Parliament that if it’s possible at all to look again at the issues, as far as the Ghana Investment Promotion Center Act is concerned, they should please do so.” “If it is not possible, then let us look at ways the pain can be reduced, like those expectations required in the law.” “We’ve proffered a few suggestions one of which is the establishment of Ghana Nigeria Business Council backed by legislation on both sides,” Gbajabiamila said. Meanwhile, in a communique issued jointly at the end of the bilateral meeting between members of the two Parliaments led by their respective Speakers, Gbajabiamila and Prof. Mike Oquaye, it was resolved that “measures will be adopted to support law-abiding traders to properly regularise their business operations to alleviate the trade challenges occasioned by the alleged closure of the retail stores, in view of the ravaging impact of Covid-19 pandemic on businesses and families in both countries.” They acknowledged that many stakeholders in the retail sector have limited appreciation of the trade laws of Ghana, in particular, Section 28 of the GIPC Act, which provides for the conditions under which non-Ghanaians can engage in trading activities and urged the relevant regulatory authorities including the GIPC and Trade Attaches of foreign missions to educate their citizens on the trade laws. They equally emphasized the need to respect the sovereignty of Member States of ECOWAS and their laws but, in doing so, efforts must be made to ensure that the ECOWAS Agenda for free movement of people and goods in furtherance of a shared and prosperous future of citizens of the sub-region is not compromised. “A meeting will be held between the Trade and Foreign Affairs Committees of both Legislatures to deliberate on applications of Trade Laws, in particular, the GIPC Act, 2013 (Act 865) and make recommendations for appropriate solutions; and “A Joint Committee will be established composed of Members of both Legislatures to explore the possible passage of reciprocal legislation, which could be potentially called the “Ghana-Nigeria Friendship Act” which shall propose “Ghana-Nigeria Business Council” to provide a framework to sustain the friendship and benefits to citizens of the two nations”, according to Rep. Kalu. He added that ” the departure from Ghana yesterday, Gbajabiamila expressed his gratitude to his counterpart for his statesmanship, leadership and hospitality, which made it possible for both countries to resolve thorny issues through legislative diplomacy”. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/09/attacks-on-nigerians-ghanas-president-assures-ceasefire-%e2%80%95-gbajabiamila/amp/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala Oam4j

Previous thread: https://www.nairaland.com/6091199/fani-kayode-demands-n6bn-apology-daily Fani-Kayode's Libel Suit Against Daily Trust is Needless Self-Injury--THREAD Whoever advised Femi Fani-Kayode to sue Daily Trust over a scathingly unflattering opinion article that an occasional contributor to the paper's opinion pages wrote about him doesn't love him. Most of the unsparingly virulent things the writer wrote about Fani-Kayode qualify as opinion and fair comment in media law and are not actionable. The only potentially libelous statement in the piece is the claim that Fani-Kayode is a drug addict who had been treated, without success, in psychiatric hospitals in Ghana (and other places) but who hasn't recovered from his drug addiction. That's not an opinion that enjoys constitutional protection; it is a statement that implies a definitive habit of moral turpitude that can be proven to be either true or false. Nonetheless, truth is a defense in libel. If FFK goes ahead with the lawsuit, Daily Trust would be compelled to prove that he was indeed a drug addict who had been treated at psychiatric hospitals. In proving this, Daily Trust’s legal team would expose FFK to even more public ridicule. But, even worse, if Daily Trust finally proves it, Fani-Kayode's reputation would be so irretrievably sullied that he would become what defamation lawyers call a “libel-proof plaintiff,” that is, someone whose reputation is already so thoroughly damaged that no libelous statement can damage it further. Plus, he is a public figure who seeks out the media, who willfully thrusts himself into public consciousness, who seeks to influence national conversations, and who has the capacity to respond to whatever dirt that is thrown at him. Such people have a hard time winning a libel case. If the man is wise, he should just lick his wounds quietly and withdraw his threat against Daily Trust. It would hurt him more than it would help him. I may write further on this in my back-page column in the Saturday Tribune. https://twitter.com/farooqkperogi/status/1300902848369233920?s=19

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has made a big u-turn on his chase for Lionel Messi, Mundo Deportivo reports. It is understood that City are willing to abandon the idea of signing Messi from Barcelona this summer. The former Premier League champions believe the transfer is not financially viable, with Barca insisting the 33-year-old will not leave as a free agent. LaLiga have also issued a statement, making it clear that any potential buyer must pay Messi’s €700 million release clause. Guardiola has reportedly told the six-time Ballon d’Or winner it would be best for him to stay at the Camp Nou, where he has been since 13. City does not want to attract further attention from football authorities, having already been forced to pay a €10 million fine this year for breaching UEFA rules. https://dailypost.ng/2020/09/01/guardiola-makes-shock-u-turn-on-messi-deal/ Mynd44 Honeric01 Lalasticlala Mukina2 |

LAGOS ADMINISTRATOR-GENERAL EMPHASISES IMPORTANCE OF WRITING WILLS The Lagos State Administrator-General, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, has called on all residents to embrace the culture of writing their Wills while they are still hale hearty and save their families from avoidable legal cases and family acrimony after death. The Administrator-General, who made the call recently while featuring on a Lagos Television (LTV) programme, titled “Oro To Nlo”, specifically pleaded with family breadwinners, who are 40 years of age and above, not to trivialise the issue of writing their Wills. She noted that the acrimony and disharmony that families experience, when the breadwinner of the family dies intestate, can be avoided if individuals are proactive and put their houses in order before they answer their maker's call. Rotimi further admonished women contemplating marriage in the State to ensure that they enter into statutory marriages, stressing that the law of the State only recognises a legally married woman. In her words, "when a husband dies, his legally married wife is entitled to 1/3 of his estate but that is not the case for women without a statutory marriage. However, the law does not discriminate between children born legitimately and those born outside the marriage. Where there is paternity issue about children, this can be resolved through DNA to confirm the true paternity”. While encouraging residents, who have challenges on issues that border on the Will and its execution, to take advantage of the Office of the Administrator-General and Public Trustees in the Ministry of Justice, Alausa Secretariat, Rotimi disclosed that the Office will not only serve as the Executor of the Will but also as the Administrator of estates, which includes when the beneficiaries are minors or in the diaspora. #LASG #ForAGreaterLagos https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3437459652941943&id=492378324116772 Lalasticlala Mynd44 |

President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, says he made history as the first president of the Bank to be re-elected via a hundred per cent votes. Adesina spoke on Thursday in his acceptance speech to the Bank’s Board of Governors and other stakeholders. The globally renowned development economist, World Food Prize Laureate and Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate said, “Of course, right now, the sound that is the loudest in my ears is the announcement of my re-election as President of the African Development Bank for a second term.” Continuing, he said, “I am deeply grateful for the collective trust, strong confidence and support of our shareholders for electing me for a second term as President. It is yet another call for selfless service to Africa and the African Development Bank, to which I will passionately devote myself. “We also made history by re-electing me by 100 percent votes via a vote. I became the first President of the bank in its history to be re-elected by 100 percent votes of all its shareholders and I am most grateful and very appreciative. “This was very important; it shows the transparency of our bank, it shows your demonstrated weight of support behind my vision. “It shows a very clear and strong mandate from all shareholders to go and implement the vision, it shows that all voices were heard, it shows that we are true to the constitutive test of our bank. “The future beckons us for a more developed Africa and a much stronger and resilient African Development Bank Group. We will build on the strong foundations of success in the past five years, while further strengthening the institution, for greater effectiveness and impacts.” As newly re-elected President, Dr. Adesina, a former Nigerian Minister of Agriculture, will begin his new term on September 1, 2020. The election result, which gave him a hundred percent of votes of all regional and non-regional members of the Bank, was announced by the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Bank, Mrs. Niale Kaba, Minister of National Planning of Côte d’Ivoire. The election took place on the final day of the 2020 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group, which was held virtually for the first time in the Bank’s history. A message posted on the Bank’s website quoted the the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Bank, Mrs. Niale Kaba, who is also a Minister of National Planning of Côte d’Ivoire as saying, “I am delighted that the Board of Governors has re-elected Dr. Adesina for a second term in office as President. As shareholders, we strongly support the Bank and will give him all the necessary support to carry forward and implement his compelling vision for the Bank over the next five years.” The Bank noted that Adesina’s first term focused on the bold new agenda for the Bank Group based on five development priorities known as the High 5s: Light up and Power Africa; Feed Africa; Industrialize Africa; Integrate Africa; and Improve the Quality of Life for the People of Africa. “During Adesina’s first term, the Bank achieved impactful results on the lives of 335 million Africans, including: 18 million people with access to electricity; 141 million people benefiting from improved agricultural technologies for food security; 15 million people benefiting from access to finance from private investments; 101 million people provided with access to improved transport; and 60 million people gaining access to water and sanitation. “The Bank has maintained its AAA-ratings by all major global credit rating agencies for five years in a row. The Board of Governors of the Bank Group approved a 125% increase in the General Capital of the Bank, raising its capital from $93 billion to $208 billion, the largest in the history of the Bank. “The African Development Fund received a $7.6 billion pledge from donors, a 32% increase, for support to low-income countries and fragile states. The Bank was ranked the 4th most transparent institution globally by Publish What You Fund, bolstering its strong governance credentials for transparency and accountability. “Under Adesina’s leadership, the African Development Bank’s Board of Directors approved a $10 billion facility to support African countries to address the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Bank also launched a $3bn COVID-19 social bond on the global capital markets, the highest US dollar denominated social bond ever in world history, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, Luxembourg Stock Exchange and NASDAQ,” it added. https://punchng.com/i-made-history-as-first-afdb-president-to-be-re-elected-with-100-votes-adesina/?amp=1&utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&__twitter_impression=true Lalasticlala Mynd44 |

Earlier thread:https://www.nairaland.com/5724727/fake-passport-judge-remands-ronaldinho#87261213 Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho has been released from house arrest in Paraguay after his detention for holding a forged passport. The World Cup winner and his brother spent one month behind bars and another four detained in a luxury hotel in the capital Asuncion on bail. Both have now been released, although they must pay $200,000 (£153,000) in damages between them. Ronaldinho had a glittering football career before his retirement in 2015. He helped Brazil to their fifth World Cup victory in 2002 and won the Champions League and two La Liga titles with Spanish football club Barcelona, as well as playing for Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan. The decade of downfall that put a star behind bars In March he and his brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira - who is also his business manager - were detained after allegedly using fake passports to enter Paraguay. Ronaldinho was travelling to the country to promote a campaign for underprivileged children. He spent his 40th birthday in a Paraguayan prison before the pair paid bail and moved to a luxury hotel under house arrest. Prosecutors did not think the footballer had any role getting the false passports, but they believed his brother knew they were fake. Both however have maintained their innocence. "The precautionary measure of arrest is lifted, there are no more restrictions placed by Paraguayan justice," Judge Gustavo Amarilla told the court on Monday. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-53898026 |
The Federal High Court, Abuja, Monday, ordered substituted service of court processes on Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, who is Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and 11 others in a suit challenging the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. Justice Taiwo Taiwo ordered that the summons be pasted at the entrance of the National Secretariat of the APC at No: 40, Blantyre Street, Wuse, Abuja. This followed complaint by plaintiff in the matter, Mr Kalu Kalu, that the respondents had been evading service of court summons since they got wind of the suit. Others affected by the order are: Gov. Sani Bello of Niger State, Sen. Ken Nnamani, Isiaka Oyebola, Dr James Lalu, Sen. Abubakar Yusuf, Rep. Akinyemi Olaide, David Lyon, Prof. Tahir Mamman, Ismail Ahmed and Sen. Akpan Udoedehe. In a ruling after an exparte motion was argued by the plaintiff on behalf of himself, Justice Taiwo ordered that the originating summons and other processes in the matter be served on 3rd to 14 defendants by posting same on the entrance gate of the APC Headquarters in Abuja, since the party is the second defendant in the matter. The judge held that if the service was effected by the court bailiff as directed, it shall be deemed good and proper. He then adjourned the matter till Sept. 4 for hearing. Newsmen report that Kalu, a Youth Leader of the APC in Abia, is challenging the powers of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party to sack the national leaders barely two years out of their constitutionally guaranteed four-year term of office. In the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/736/2020, the plaintiff asked for an order of the court, setting aside the dissolution of the NWC by APC’s NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa , Abuja, last month. He also asked the court for an order restraining the National Caretaker Committee members led by Buni from parading themselves as national officers of the APC and from usurping the functions of the party’s NWC, among other prayers. https://www.today.ng/news/politics/apc-nwc-abia-youth-leader-drags-governor-buni-11-court-314468/amp?__twitter_impression=true Oam4j Seun Mynd44 Lalasticlala |
