Philo beamed in smile. “He’s fine. We’re still together.”

It was ironic. In terms of beauty, Philo was nowhere near my level, but she seemed luckier with guys. For the past two years or so, she and James had been having a steady relationship.

Well, I believed good and reliable guy would soon come my way.

I stayed with Philo for about forty minutes before I left her place.

“Thanks dear friend. Your company, as usual, has made my day.”

“I should be the one to thank you,” she quickly replied. “Thanks for coming.”

I left her place and returned to my residence. I was still opening the door to my apartment when Omon came around.

“Good evening, Kween.”

“Hello, Omon. How’re you?”

She smiled back at me. “Fine. Uncle Richard was around.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Richard?”

“Yes. He asked after you.”

I chuckled. How nice of him. “I see.”

I opened the flat door and stepped inside. She stepped in with me.

“He said I should give you this.”

It was then I noticed that she was holding a brown envelope. “What’s this?”

“He said I should give you as soon as you came.”

I got the envelope from her and examined it. It was sealed.

“I only came to give it to you. I’m quite busy. See you.”
“Thanks so much, Omon. See you again.”

She left my flat. I bolted the door after she had gone. I dropped the envelope on the center table and went to my bedroom to change to casuals. I could not but wonder what Richard was up to.

Had he written a letter to tell me that it was all over between us? Had he written it to apologize? I shrugged. I would soon find out.

I went to the kitchen to get myself some digestive biscuits and fruit juice from the fridge. I returned to the sitting-room, flicked the television on and sat relaxingly on my favorite seat.

I poured some juice in the cup and took some biscuits. Now, I had time for the envelope. I opened it. There was I white paper inside, wrapped round a two-hundred dollar bills.

He scrawled a short note on the paper:

I couldn’t believe this. What kind of game was the guy playing? He had left me in the lurch now for many days without any form of communication whatsoever.

Now, he was sending some money and proclaiming love.

on the sofa. "Thank you," she said. I smiled it off. "How was your trip? How were your parents, your siblings, and eveything in general?" I asked. "Thanks. They're all fine and everything went well." I allowed a brief pause. "There was an understatement I made the other time," I said. "It has to be properly said and I want to do so now." "Understatement? What understatement?" "Hmm...the other time, I told you that I have great liking for you, it was not exactly like that. What I fel for you, without any iota of doubt, is love. Dear Mariam, I love you. That assertion is from my heart." I stopped to study her. She looked calm. "Are you sure of what you're saying, Mike?" I smiled at her. "Look, Mariam, I'm going to tell you what I've never told any lady before. First, I believe my love for you is ordained by the almighty God himself. Secondly, I want to assure you that my love will be there, come rain, come shine." "Wait, Mike. Wait. Before you go further, there's a confession I have." I stared at her.

She told me she would return to Markudi where her parents lived, and where she hoped to get a job. As for me, the ultimate destination was Lagos, where my parents were and where “things were happening”.

Several minutes later, the Honda Accord of Habib approached the gate. As soon as he saw me, he parked the car by the road-side and came out of it.

“That’s the person I’ve been waiting for,” I told Florence.

“Okay.”

We moved towards the Honda.

“Sorry, I couldn’t make up my mind on time about whether I would come or not,” Habib said, grinning, and looking from me to my companion.

“Good afternoon,” I greeted. “Thanks for being able to make it. The lady here is my friend, Florence, and she will like to have a ride with us.”

His grin became a big smile. “Hello, Florence. Of course, you’re welcome to join us.”

He shook hands with her and I could see a glint of excitement on his face. I had no doubt that Habib would fall for any beautiful lady.

He already had two wives and I wondered how many girlfriends he had, apart from me.

He opened the boot of the car and we piled our luggage inside. We entered the car and the trip back to Kaduna began in earnest. I sat in the front seat, but I knew that Habib was using the inside rear mirror to steal glances at Florence.

“So, how was the experience like?” he asked.

I supposed the question was meant for Flo, so I allowed her to answer. There wasn’t much to say during the trip. At Kaduna, he told our guest that he would be driving to Zaria.

“Where will you like to get down?” he asked. “Is Mando Park okay?”

“Yes, anywhere I’ll be able to easily get a cab to the main town,” Florence answered.

“Okay.” The car soon came to a halt for her to alight.

“Lovette, it has been pleasure to know you,” Florence told me. “Please, don’t forget to call me on the phone.” She turned to Habib. “Thanks for the ride, sir.”

Habib nodded at her while I smiled.

“Sure, Flo. I’ll give you a call.” I waved at her and she moved on. Habib hooted the horn before engaging the gear of the car.

“You always seem to have beautiful friends,” he commented as soon as he was on Zaria Road.

I frowned slightly. “What does that mean?”

He realized he shouldn’t have said that. “What I mean is your friends are always as beautiful as you are,” he put in apologetically.

I shrugged.

“You still want to travel down to Lagos by Wednesday?” he asked.

I nodded. He had asked several times and I had always replied in the affirmative.

“How I wish you will stay. If only you can exercise a little bit of patience, I will secure a better job for you.”

I brought them out and counted. One hundred dollars in ten pieces were in there. It all amounted to one thousand dollars.

“Use that to get yourself some clothes and shoes. I don’t like you dashing to your house to change. Buy those things, bring them here and stay with me. I love to have you around.”

She smiled at me. “Do you have any objection?”
I smiled back at her. Objection? What purpose would that objection serve? Of course, I had no objection. I got up from the bed to give her a passionate hug.

“Oh, my sweetie, you’re so wonderful. Thanks a lot.”

She held me back. “But I need one thing from you, Richard.”

I rubbed her. “Sweetie, tell me what you need.”

“I need your love. I need you to be with me.”

What was difficult in that? Without even thinking about it, I gave her my answer: “You have it already and will continue to have it, baby.”

KWEEN

Three days after the nasty phone call, I still had not set my eyes on Richard. He refused to come to the house and to call me. Well, maybe he came to the house while I was away in the office but the fact was I didn’t set my eyes on him.

It was very difficult for me, but I was trying to get him off my mind. I only had the mind of telling him what a big disappointment he was when I saw him.

Well, life must go on. I would just have to trudge on with life. I had no choice. This Friday, I was thinking of visiting Philomena, my friend, at Ogba briefly before I would come home. I had earlier called her and she told me she would be at her residence by five p.m.

It was five-thirty when I knocked at her door.
“Kween, Kween. Long time.”

We hugged briefly. “How are you, Philo?”

“Oh, I’m fine. Please come in.”

I entered her cozy sitting-room. As usual, she had neatly and carefully arranged the place. I sat down on one of the leather seats.

“This is your face,” she continued. “Na wa o. I hope all is fine with you. Now, what can I get you?”

I shrugged. “Any drinks you have in the house will be okay.”

“Okay.” She stood up and left the sitting-room.

Some moments later, she was back with two bottles of malt. She used the opener to uncork one of them and handed it to me, while she took the second bottle.

“How was the office?” she asked.

I nodded. “Office was fine.”

“And how about that your new guy, Richard?”

At this point, I hissed.

She was surprised. “Hey, what happened? Don’t tell me the two of you have parted ways.”

“We have,” I replied bitterly. “I never knew he was such a useless guy.”

“What! What happened. I thought you said he was the most romantic man you ever met.”

I hissed again. “And the most unreliable too. He’s dating another lady I suspect is his sugar mummy.”

“You don’t mean it. But, why did he have to deceive you?”

“That one is a big JAMB question. Look, I think we should forget him and discuss a better thing.”

Philo was still not totally convinced. “But, how could you be sure he was dating another lady?”

I sipped from the bottle of malt. “I called his number and it was the woman that picked it. Can you imagine that? She picked it and daringly told me to stop running after him.”

Philo opened her mouth in amazement. “That was serious.”

“Na so we see am. Look, I’ll rather not talk about it.”

“Oh, God, but why are men like that? Why are they never contended with what they have? How could a man have someone as beautiful as you and still be eying another lady? Why are they such philanderer?”

I shrugged. Really, I wished we would discuss another topic.

“Well, don’t worry. I’m sure God will provide your own man for you. Your real man will soon come to you.”

“Amen o. Thank you, my friend. What about your guy, James?”

It was also amazing that many things had happened within the last eight days. I went to greet Mariam, giving her a slight hug. "Welcome, Mariam, it's good to see you." "It's good to see you too." I went back to my room to give her a resting space. About twenty minutes later, she came to my room with a nylon containing a bunch of banana and a bottle of peanuts. "I brought this for you,"she said. "Oh, thank you so much." as I accepted them from her, I dipped my hand into my pocket to bring out a wad of naira notes. "Here, have this too." She stared at the money without collecting it. "What is it for?" I held her hand to put the money in her palm. She made her palm into a fist so I could not pass the money to her. "It's for you to buy some provisions or foodstuffs. I cannot continue to get things from you without giving." "But I didn't give anything out of compulsion. I give because I want to give." I nodded. "That's right. I also give because I want to give. Take it Mariam." she finally took it. We sat down

I knew he was having a good time. I could see some perspirations on his forehead and chest. In less than five minutes, he got to his peak. He gripped my shoulders, shuddered his body and orgasmed.

I feigned my own orgasm. It was succinct to say that he was panting like a man that had just finished a long distance race. He collapsed on the bed beside me, still short of breaths.

* * *

Days later, the day of passing out came. It had been fun alright, but I was glad the national youth service was over. The Passing Out Parade (POP) had been grueling and, in the hot sun of Kaduna, one could not really say the whole thing was enjoyable.

The compensation was that at least I had my certificate for the national service as a bona fide Nigerian youth.

I joined the teaming corpers who thronged to the main road, off the permanent orientation camp along Abuja Road, to take a bus to Kaduna city. I was moving close to one of the commercial busses when my phone rang. It was Habib on the line.

“Wait for me at the orientation camp,” he said.

“I’m already on my way. You people have concluded the program, haven’t you?

I sighed. “Yes, we have.”

“Good.” He seemed to laugh. “I’ll soon be there. Wait for me.”

“Okay.”

I sighed again and went back to the gate. I would wait there since it would be easier for me to see him as he drove in.

“Hey, Lovette, what’s up?” a female voice said around me. I turned to look at the speaker.

“Are you waiting for somebody here?” the person went on.

It was Florence, a fellow corper – one of those I had made friendship with.

I smiled. “Hello, Flo. One of my friends has decided he would come and pick me.”

“Oh?” She looked relieved as if she was the one Habib had promised to come and pick. “That will save you a lot of stress, won’t it? I guess I can wait and go with you.”

I nodded. “Yes, that will be no problem.”

We stood together and chatted about our experiences.

She read Pharmacy and had been posted to the General Hospital in Kaduna, unlike me who read Business Administration and was posted to Nigerian Military School, Zaria, as Business Studies teacher.

She told me she would return to Markudi where her parents lived, and where she hoped to get a job. As for me, the ultimate destination was Lagos, where my parents were and where “things were happening”.

I followed him out of the lobby to a corridor and to a room by the left. He unlocked it and we stepped inside.

It was one of the rooms in the guest house and it looked clean without being elegant. He had brought me here before. Specifically, we were no strangers to the room.

“Here we are,” he said, grinning.

He locked the door, removed his cap and started undressing. I put my handbag on the bed-side table and removed my shoes. In a minute, Habib had stripped himself only to the boxer.

“No, no,” he said, grinning at me. “Permit me to UnCloth you.”

He always said this, and I always wondered why he said so. It was not that I did not want to be pampered. I did as he desired. He unzipped my jeans trousers and pulled it down.

He also tugged at the peach pantie and pulled it to my ankles. I stepped out of both the trousers and the pantie.

“Ah, you can sit on the bed, now,” he said, the way you would address a baby.

Gingerly, I sat on the bed while he unashamedly unbuttoned my top and removed it. I was wearing a white, well-fitted bra, and I could see him look very excited as he ogled my bust.

I unstrapped the bra and removed it.

“Oh, my God,” he muttered under his breath upon seeing my full boobs.

“As I always say,” he continued in excitement, “your breasts are the loveliest breasts I’ve ever seen in this life.”

I smiled but said nothing. Somehow, I believed he had said that to one lady or the other before. A man like Habib was capable of that. I shrugged. I was a lady who would not be carried away by such words from any man.

He touched the boobs and caressed them. I could feel his breath getting hot already as it fanned my bust. He brought his mouth to them, kissing, sucking and suckling.

Now, he had full erection. Not to be a passive lover, I rubbed my left hand on the straining dick in his boxer.

“Oh, Lovette, you’re so beautiful,” he muttered.

Again, he had said that countless of times. I pulled his boxer than and had a firm grasp of his dick.

“Wait, wait.” He quickly went to his trousers and brought what I suspected would be a packet of condom out.

He had earlier said he hated using it, but I had insisted that except when I was giving him a mouth action, he must always use it. Quickly, he wore it.

I teased his dick which didn’t really look long. It had an average size, but he had always prided himself about it.

I held the organ again, traced my fingers on the tip and squeezed gently. His eyes popped out on pleasant surprise.

“You can still play with it later, but let’s get down to the main thing now.”

I knew what he meant as the main thing was sex, real sex. I lie down on the bed and spread out my legs.

He mounted me. I knew it would be the ‘missionary style’ even without him saying so. He was the conservative type who knew only one way of having sex with a woman. He inserted his dick inside me and started thrusting.

He was not a lover I would rate high in sexual performance. As a matter of fact, I would rate him low. However, he had been the source of some of the indulgence I had been enjoying in my national service year, so I let him be.

I wiggled my waist and made some moaning to convey to him that I was enjoying the act. His thrusts were soft and gentle.
