Culture / Re: Igbos Of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea - A Forgotten Minority Tribe by ladensmith(m): 8:59pm On Oct 18, 2017
bigfrancis21:
Populations: 33,500
Rank: 3rd largest
Related tribes: Igbo People of Nigeria
Notable Personality: William Napoleon Barleycor de Fernando Poo, escribio el primer libro sobre la cultura bubi. Nacio en Santa Isabel (malabo). Murio en Inglaterra.

William Napoleon Barleycorn (1848–1925), born in Santa Isabel, Fernando Po, Spanish Guinea and a Krio Fernandino of Igbo descent,[1] was a Primitive Methodist missionary who went to Fernando Po (now known as Bioko) in Africa in the early 1880s. From there, he traveled to Edinburgh University.
.............................
HISTORY
Equatorial Guinea is located at the Eastern end of the Gulf of Guinea, West coast of Africa, the only African Country situated in the middle of the ocean, outside African map separated by water, the only Spanish speaking. Among the tribes are the Igbo people who also inhabit South Eastern Nigeria, off the Bight of Biafra, the Bubi and Fang ethnic groups and among other tribes.

The Igbo as officially declared by the government of Equatorial Guinea is third largest after Fang and Bubi tribes, and occupies a small area in Bioko, their communities are small compared to Bubi and Fang. Majority of them migrated to Bioko from Arochukwu Abia state.

Check 2012 report in Bioko,

'The Igbo of Equatorial Guinea, numbering 33,500, are No Longer unreached. They are part of the Igbo people cluster within the Sub-Saharan African affinity bloc, this group, though a minority of people rank third largest in Equatorial Guinea, a country with total population of 1.2Million people. Their primary language is Igbo. The primary religion practiced by the Igbo is marginal Christianity, a form of religion with roots in Christianity but not theologically Christian".

BIOKO
Formerly known as Fernando Po, is the largest region in Equatorial Guinea, they speak the Pigin English, Spanish foreign language, and Fang, Igbo and Bubi indigenous languages. The original inhabitants of Bioko are of a group called Bubi, descendants of mainland Bantu tribes, they are warlike, fought and defeated the Fang, and pushed them to inland part while they occupy the coastal areas, the Fang is also an ethnic group in Cameroon. Bioko also is home to descendants of former slaves who were freed in the nineteenth century. Many Bubi have recently immigrated to the continent, and along with other, smaller Bantu-speaking tribes, comprise the remaining 10 percent of the population in Río Muni. Minority tribes include the Kombe, Balengue, Bujebas.

Most people's daily lives are conducted in tribal languages, either Fang, Bubi, or Ibo, all of which are in the Bantu family of languages.
National Identity. Equatorial Guineans identify first with their tribe or ethnic group, second with the nation. The current country was formed during Spanish rule, linking the main island of Bioko with the mainland territory, despite the fact that the two were culturally distinct. Since the unification of the two, there has been some intermingling and migration, particularly of mainland Fang to Bubi-inhabited Bioko. The Fang tribe itself is not limited to the Río Muni area, but extends also north into Cameroon and south into Gabon.
Ethnic Relations. Legally there is no discrimination against ethnic or racial minorities, but in practice this is not the case. The Bubi have experienced persecution under the post-independence government. Prior to independence, the group formed a majority on Bioko. However, since 1968, many Fang migrated to the island, and a small subclan, the Mongomo, has dominated the government. There is resentment and violence not only between the Bubi and the Fang but also between the Mongomo and other Fang subgroups.

INDEPENDENCE OF BIOKO

The Bubi, a warlike tribe are leading the independence struggle, a proposed Country that includes the Igbo minority and Fang, though there is no record of any opposition to the demands for Republic of Bioko by Fang and the Igbo.

i commend you for this beautiful research...
The assertion that igbo are from Israel is right.

Business / 3 Reasons Why Countries Devalue Their Currency by ladensmith(m): 9:44am On Oct 16, 2017
Ever since world currencies abandoned the gold standard and allowed their exchange rates to float freely against each other, there have been many currency devaluation events that have hurt not only the citizens of the country involved, but have also rippled across the globe. If the fallout can be so widespread, why do countries devalue their currency?
To Boost Exports
On a world market, goods from one country must compete with those from all other countries. Car makers in America must compete with car makers in Europe and Japan. If the value of the euro decreases against the dollar, the price of the cars sold by European manufacturers in America, in dollars, will be effectively less expensive than they were before. On the other hand, a more valuable currency make exports relatively more expensive for purchase in foreign markets. (See also: Interesting Facts About Imports and Exports .)
In other words, exporters become more competitive in a global market. Exports are encouraged while imports are discouraged. There should be some caution, however, for two reasons. First, as the demand for a country's exported goods increases worldwide, the price will begin to rise, normalizing the initial effect of the devaluation. The second is that as other countries see this effect at work, they will be incentivized to devalue their own currencies in kind in a so-called "race to the bottom." This can lead to tit for tat currency wars and lead to unchecked inflation .
To Shrink Trade Deficits
Exports will increase and imports will decrease due to exports becoming cheaper and imports more expensive. This favors an improved balance of payments as exports increase and imports decrease, shrinking trade deficits . Persistent
deficits are not uncommon today, with the United States and many other nations running persistent imbalances year after year. Economic theory, however, states that ongoing deficits are unsustainable in the long run and can lead to dangerous levels of debt which can cripple an economy. Devaluing the home currency can help correct balance of payments and reduce these deficits. (See also: Current Account Deficits: Government Investment Or Irresponsibility? )
There is a potential downside to this rationale, however. Devaluation also increases the debt burden of foreign-denominated loans when priced in the home currency. This is a big problem for a developing country like India or Argentina which hold lots of dollar- and euro-denominated debt. These foreign debts become more difficult to service, reducing confidence among the people in their domestic currency.
To Reduce Sovereign Debt Burdens
A government may be incentivized to encourage a
weak currency policy if it has a lot of government issued sovereign debt to service on a regular basis. If debt payments are fixed, a weaker currency makes these payments effectively less expensive over time.
Take for example a government who has to pay $1 million each month in interest payments on its outstanding debts. But if that same $1 million of notional payments becomes less valuable, it will be easier to cover that interest. In our example, if the domestic currency is devalued to half of its initial value, the $1 million debt payment will only be worth $500,000 now.
Again, this tactic should be used with caution. As most countries around the globe have some debt outstanding in one form or another, a race to the bottom currency war could be initiated. This tactic will also fail if the country in question holds a large amount of foreign bonds since it will make
those interest payments relatively more costly.
The Bottom Line
Currency devaluations can be used by countries to achieve economic policy. Having a weaker currency relative to the rest of the world can help boost exports, shrink trade deficits and reduce the cost of interest payments on its outstanding government debts. There are, however, some negative effects of devaluations. They create uncertainty in global markets that can cause asset markets to fall or spur recessions . Countries might be tempted to enter a tit for tat currency war, devaluing their own currency back and forth in a race to the bottom. This can be a very dangerous and vicious cycle leading to much more harm than good.
Nairaland / General / Re: What's The Most Traumatic And Scariest Event You Have Ever Witnessed? by ladensmith(m): 11:53pm On Oct 02, 2017
Worksunlimited:
Mine was the day a fellow corper called me over to his room to kill me.

Funny thing was I had no issue or quarrel with the guy prior to the fateful day.

He stabbed me thrice in my chest region, around where my heart is located, but the knife didn't penetrate (No be juju, Na God work). How Baba God do am, I no know, but I Thank Him for coming thru for me.

Pushed him off, bolted for the door, dude grabbed me by the neck, squeezing my wind pipe and oesophagus shut (I was about giving up the ghost), when some students kicked the room door open and pushed him off me, I landed on the floor, gasping for breathe.

Sick fellow corper kept shouting I must not escape. Sat on my back and started smashing my face on the broken floor, the students pushed him off me again.

I got up, and ran outside screaming for help, fell on the sand cos I was out of breathe, dude took a stone and was about smashing my head in, to finish the job he started, when he was over powered.

Till today, I still have flashes of the knife he used, dangling in the air ryt before it struck.

When they brought the knife he used to stab me with, before the civil defense and police men that later took up the case, the knife blade had bent 90degrees, to show the force the dude used to stab me with.

My face disfigure, couldn't breathe properly for a while, buh at least I was alive.

All thanks to God.
And are u sure, u were never a cultist
i didn't meant to vo disrespectful, just asking.

Their ideology,their concern
Thank Allah i wasnt born into their midst....
Mohammed(s.a.w) i know, ashura i dont.
For those who wish to know little about ashura should read this:
Ashura is a Muslim religious celebration that falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Islamic calendar.
This year, Ashura began on the evening of Friday, September 29, and ended on the evening of Saturday, September 30.
Islamic religious dates are tabular - they begin at sunset on the first evening and ends at sunset the second evening.
Ashura is a festival of remembrance in Islam - but Sunni and Shi’a Muslims celebrate for different reasons.
In Sunni Islam, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism as Jewish people followed a day of fasting around this time of year (commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers to escape the Pharaoh.)
The Prophet Muhammad thought that this tradition was worth following so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same.
On this day, Sunni Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting, showing respect and thanks.
For Shi’a Muslims, Ashura is sacred as a day of remembrance of the death of the grandson of Muhammad.
Husayn ibn Ali was killed in the Battle of Karbala, and Shi’a Muslims passionately commemorate his death.
During Ashura, some Shi’a Muslims flog and beat themselves in parades to express their grief for Hussein’s suffering.
The Ashura is a public holiday in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Bahrain and Pakistan.
