Politics / Senate Celebrates As Court Affirms Power To Reject Magu by LadyNaija(f): 6:24pm On Feb 01, 2018
The Senate has said it has been vindicated on the rejection of the appointment of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Punch reports that the chairman of the Senate committee on media and public affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, who briefed journalists in Abuja on Thursday, February 1, announced that a Federal High Court had ruled that the upper chamber of the National Assembly had the powers to confirm or reject his appointment.

Sabi-Abdullahi made a copy of the ruling available to journalists, a copy of which was obtained by Punch. The Senate’s spokesperson said: “We are pleased with this judgment and we want to salute Nigeria’s judiciary for always rising up to the occasion to protect our democracy and deepen our democratic processes.”

The Senate had rejected Magu’s appointment bases on a report by the Department of State Services which disqualified him. The lawmakers had also placed an embargo on confirmation of appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari which required legislative approval, to protest against Presidency’s position that some appointments did not require Senate’s approval. Sabi-Abdullahi stated that the embargo would remain until Magu is replaced.

Politics / Former President Obasanjo's Proposed Coalition For Nigeria Launches In Abuja by LadyNaija(f): 2:55pm On Jan 31, 2018
The coalition is being launched at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. Obasanjo, had, in a letter, called for the formation of the movement. He had argued that the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party were incapable of repositioning Nigeria, having lost the confidence of the electorate.

Premium Times reports that Obasanjo, who just bagged a PhD degree was not present at the launch in Abuja. Two former PDP governors, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former governor of Osun state and Donald Duke of Cross River, were, however, said to be in attendance.

Oyinlola who said the movement is not yet a political party, noted that, with time and agreement with other stake holders, it could eventually upgrade into a political party. “We’re not a political party, at least, for now,” he said. “We recognise the facts that by the dictates of the constitution, you can only contest on the platform of a political party.”

Politics / God Directed Me To Pick My Deputy As Successor - Fayose Opens Up by LadyNaija(f): 8:50am On Jan 30, 2018
Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, at a PDP rally on Monday, January 29, in Ado Ekiti, declared that God directed him to support his Deputy, Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, to succeed him. “Olusola never said he wanted to be deputy governor, but God instructed me to pick him. I said we will go together after our tenure, but God said I should allow him to stay; that what I said was my own opinion,” Fayose told the huge crowd.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that former minister of state for works, Dayo Adeyeye, a serving senator, Mrs. Biodun Olujimi, and Nigeria’s former envoy in Canada, Dare Bejide, had indicated interest in the PDP’s ticket for the July 14 governorship poll. The trio, along with a former Fayose aide and justice commissioner, Owoseeni Ajayi, had jointly rejected the adoption of Olusola as the PDP’s sole candidate and described the step as “pedestrian and undemocratic”. But Fayose, who spoke at the rally held at Okesa area, said that he was not rattled by the negative utterances hurled at him by the anti-Olusola aspirants.

“The PDP has taken a position which we think is in the best interest of the state; we shall not be distracted by those opposed to this step,” he said. He expressed confidence that the PDP would win the July 14 election “by God’s grace”. Fayose said that the large turn out of people for the rally was a testimony of PDP’s popularity in Ekiti, and warned those thinking of rigging the election to perish that thought as the people would resist that. He said that his administration had achieved a lot in the areas of infrastructure. “We have improved on infrastructural development. We built a flyover at Oja Oba market and also built a new governor’s office. We have executed many projects,” he said.

He dismissed allegations that his government had borrowed N56 billion, and declared that he had not borrowed “even a dime” since he came into office. “Let my opponents know that the elections are not won by propaganda. If they are sure of what they are saying, let them tell us the bank that gave the loan and also produce the papers leading to the transactions,” he said.

Buhari: It's Disgraceful, None of Our Refineries is Working Optimally
Sat, 27 Jan 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Abuja lamented the sorry state of the country’s four refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna, saying it was disgraceful that not even one of them was working optimally.

The President, who was speaking while receiving a delegation from Eni, led by the Chief Upstream Officer, Mr. Antonio Vella, said no refinery was performing up to 50 per cent.

Buhari’s media aide, Femi Adesina, quoted the President to have said: “In my first coming, all our refineries were working. Port Harcourt used to refine 60,000 barrels per day, and it was later upgraded to 100,000 barrels. Kaduna and Warri were also working optimally, and we used to satisfy the demand of the local market. We equally exported 100,000 barrels of refined petrol. Now, no refinery is performing up to 50 per cent. It is a disgraceful thing.”

Herdsmen killings: Taraba, Benue, Rivers govts, others attack defence minister
Sat, 27 Jan 2018
Taraba State Government; Rivers State Government; Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, and civil rights groups on Friday berated the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, over his statement on the killings by suspected herdsmen in the country.

They said that the statement showed that the minister was insensitive to the plight of the victims of the violence carried out by suspected herdsmen.

For instance, Ortom took a swipe at the minister, describing him as one of the people misinforming President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dan-Ali, in an interview with State House correspondents, had identified the blockage of cattle routes across the country as the remote cause of the killings by herdsmen.

He also identified the implementation of anti-open grazing law in some states as the immediate cause of the killings.http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2018/01/nigeria-newspapers-todays-punch_26.html

Politics / OBJ Lacks Moral Right To Criticise President Buhari – Orji Uzor Kalu by LadyNaija(f): 6:51pm On Jan 25, 2018
Former Abia governor, Dr Orji Kalu, on Thursday faulted ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo’s letter to President Muhammadu Buhari criticising his poor handling of the economy and advising him not to contest the 2019 presidential election.

Kalu told newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed Airport 2, Lagos, that Obasanjo lacked the moral right to comment on such national issues.

He noted that Buhari’s government may be slow in taking critical decisions, but had done well in tackling corruption, recalling high level of graft in the 16 years that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ruled Nigeria.

Kalu said Buhari had recorded modest achievements in his two and half years tenure, which necessitates his re-election.

The former governor listed the commencement of work on the Second Niger Bridge and other interventions in the economy as some of Buhari’s feats.

READ: Cattle colony: Katsina Govt allocates 5,300 hectares of land

“I am not going to talk about former President Obasanjo’s letter because I am going to make some consultations with the United States, Germany, China and the United Kingdom, then I will come back and speak on that letter.

“I think Obasanjo’s letter is not in the best interest of Nigeria. I don’t want to reply him because I have given you example times without number.

“There are three express roads Obasanjo refused to build when he was the president of Nigeria; Port Harcourt-Okigwe-Umuahia-Enugu expressway. It is being built now by the Buhari administration.

“Another one is the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Expressway. It is being built now by the Buhari administration. Obasanjo did not build it.

“Then there is the Onitsha-Owerri-Aba Expressway. The Buhari administration is building it now.

“Between Obasanjo and Buhari who should I call my friend in real terms? So Buhari is my friend; so he is a better President.

“I don’t wish to reply that letter because the former president has no morals that should qualify him to write that letter,” he said.

According to Kalu, Nigerians have also not forgotten the $16 billion wasted on building power plants by the Obasanjo administration which yielded no result.

He said it would therefore be unfair to the South East, South South and South Western parts of Nigeria not to support the second term bid of Buhari.

He however advised Buhari to speak on security issues in Nigeria because it was threatening the fabric of socio-economic cohesion of the country.

Kalu said the challenge of herdsmen/farmers clash was lingering in some states because their governors lacked the capacity to handle the situation.

Politics / Atiku Reacts To Obasanjo's Letter To Buhari by LadyNaija(f): 8:12am On Jan 25, 2018
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the letter written for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to President Muhammadu Buhari saying it confirmed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has failed Nigerians. Atiku made this comment on Wednesday, January 24 when he paid a visit to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti in furtherance of his political ambition. READ ALSO: FG responds to Obasanjo’s criticism of Buhari administration Atiku said: “The letter was a personal issue between two individuals, so I won’t like to comment on it.

“However, the letter confirmed that the APC government under Buhari has failed Nigerians.” On his visit to Ekiti, Atiku said Fayose “calls the shots and when he does so, we all take the queue.” “Since my return home to PDP this is the first state I am visiting for consultations with party leaders. “This is not surprising as Fayose and I had struck a good relationship since his first tenure as governor and I was VP. He is blunt and straightforward, a sharpshooter in politics and I respect him for that this. “But above all, he is also the chairman of our governors forum. Today, among the governors, among the party generally, he calls the shots and when he does so, we all take the queue.”

“Another unique thing the governor has done is telling me that his deputy is being supported as the party candidate in the next election, this is a very rare feat in the democratic system of our country. “How many deputy governors have succeeded their governors? It means he has foresight and wants someone to continue his good works.” In his reaction, Fayose described Atiku’s ambition as legitimate and a welcomed development for the party. He said: “Vice President Atiku has not spoken to me privately about his ambition, and maybe he would do that in our private meeting. “But his body language obviously shows he has an ambition which is legitimate.

We will all examine everybody and we will have a level playing ground, as he has come, others will still come. “I have paid my dues, I am not a hidden voice. I have all it takes to lead this country, but whichever way it goes, the interest of our party comes first, it is above our individual aspiration. Whoever the party finally picks as the party’s candidate will be supported by others.” “I want to assure you that we only have leadership in Abuja, real party is in the states and at the local government level, we have done it before, we will do it again.”

Politics / Rochas Okorocha A Curse To Imo People – Olehi by LadyNaija(f): 8:03am On Jan 25, 2018
The gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party, during the 2015 general election in Imo State, Barrister Ngozi Olehi, has described the current administration in the state as a curse.
According to Olehi, Governor Rochas Okorocha’s claim of massive infrastructural development in the state is “an unprecedented scam.”

The politician also warned that “the greatest evil that can befall Imo State in the coming electoral season is to fail to learn from the blunders that plunged the state into its deepest economic woe in it’s entire existence.”

Olehi said the state must have earned about N800 billion since 2011, adding that the woes of misgovernance in the state had become unbearable.
According to Olehi, “Government has no development policy or blueprint that articulates measurable and visible strides that creates employment opportunities, reduce insecurity and significantly increases the welfare of the governed.”

He added that “the inability of Imo state government to attract any of the more than 30 countries that invested N14 billion between 2015 and 2016, is a critical demonstration of the rejection of the international community of the jungle governance that has characterised mindless executive and legislative actions.”

He noted that such lapse only positioned looters to empty the state treasury.

Olehi said that “any government that is not accountable to the people, not transparent in it’s operations and does not obey the rule of law, as the present Imo State Government, constitutes a curse.”

Politics / PDP Reacts To Obasanjo's Letter To President Buhari by LadyNaija(f): 8:51pm On Jan 23, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the counsel by former president Olusegun Obasanjo that President Muhammadu Buhari should not seek a re-election in 2019 as courageous, timeous and patriotic, adding that such has vindicated its position The party however rejected the call by Chief Obasanjo for a third force saying that such would amount to repeating the same blunder that brought in the ideologically vacuous APC and the Buhari Presidency which has now wrecked havoc on the nation in its almost three years of governance.

PDP national publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Tuesday, January 23 said the fact that President Buhari and the APC have failed our nation is obvious to all, adding that Nigerians have already taken an irrevocable position against them ahead of the 2019 elections.

According to the PDP, Chief Obasanjo’s counsel has rekindled the fate of the people in the democratic process, stressing however that the solution does not lie in creating another political quicksand in a third force but consolidating on a rescue mission with the repositioned PDP which Nigerians have already embraced. It said Nigerians would recall that in the heat of 2015 elections, many citizens, who claimed to have become tired of the PDP and its government, opted for a coalition of strange bedfellows who had little or no experience in governance as a vehicle for electoral victory. Expectedly, in their confusion, they have plunged us into this regrettable situation that has brought our nation to its knees. PDP maintained that “repeating the old mistake of congregating political strangers cannot help our nation at this time, more so, when the few concerns raised by the former President about the PDP no longer obtain under the refocused and rebranded PDP.

“The PDP is now standing on a truly democratic ground that perfectly represents and reflects the hopes and aspirations of all Nigerians irrespective of their class, creed or tribe. “That is why our great party has now, more than ever before, become a center of the new patriotic and broad-based engagements by well-meaning Nigerians and coalitions across board, including past leaders, in rekindling our democratic process that places priority on returning power to the people. “This accounts for the reason former President Obasanjo, just like most Nigerians today, are concerned about the quality of presidential candidates to be presented by various parties for the 2019 election.

“The fact is that while the APC is already caught up with President Buhari, the PDP is open for a new engagement that will throw up the President, which our nation truly deserves at this crucial moment. “We therefore call on Nigerians, including all our leaders across board, to come together to rebuild our nation on PDP’s consolidated base rather than traversing on another learning curve.” In a statement: T

he Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement, Obasanjo said President Buhari has performed far below expectation just as he added that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not the solution to the country's challenges. Obasanjo asked Buhari to honourably dismount from the horse and join the league of former leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.

Sports / In Memory Of Former Super Eagles’ Coach Stephen Keshi Today 23 January 2018 by LadyNaija(f): 5:42am On Jan 23, 2018
Stephen Okechukwu Keshi (23 January 1962 – 7 June 2016) was a Nigerian football defender and manager.
Former Super Eagles’ Coach, Stephen Keshi, died before he arrived Faith Mediplex, the hospital he was rushed to on Tuesday night, his brother in-law, Richard Aburime, has said.
The former captain and coach of the senior national died at the age of 54 on Tuesday.
Narrating Mr. Keshi’s last days on earth to journalists in Benin, the Edo State capital on Wednesday, Mr. Aburime said the late coach had a history of leg pains following years of successful professional football, which was usually managed with massaging.
He said following his last complains and subsequent massaging, Mr. Keshi’s body system and health suddenly degenerated as a result of which he was at about 11.30pm rushed to the hospital, which is about 20 minutes’ drive from his residence at Giwa Amu area of Government Reserved Area in Benin City.
“He had complained of pains in his leg for some days and they kept massaging it for him. When he complained of it yesterday, they massaged it for him again,” Mr. Aburime recounted.
“About one and half hours after the massaging, he was in serious distress and was gasping for breath. That was how we rushed him to the hospital, a distance of about 20 minutes.”
“But by the time he arrived at the hospital, the doctor certified him dead on arrival. That was between 11:30 and 11:45 pm.”
“It was the nurse that first came out. She checked for pulse‎ and said there was no more pulse in him. Doctors later came and do all the stuffs they do; but nothing came out of it.”
Reacting to reports that Mr. Keshi died of cardiac arrest, Mr. Aburime cautioned the media against speculating on what killed the coach.
He said only a proper toxicological autopsy to be conducted would determine the actual cause of the death of the late skipper of Super Eagles.
Mr. Aburime said after the doctors confirmed Mr. Keshi dead, they could not issue any report or present any death certificate because the late coach was not a patient of the hospital.
He said, “After the confirmation, as he was not a patient of the hospital, they could not write any report or present any death certificate. They said we must bring the police. So, the police came to inspect the body.
“I am about to take the corpse to Stella Obasanjo Hospital now, pending the autopsy the family wants to do. Dr. Wilson Akhiwu will conduct the autopsy.”
“There is no official statement as to the cause of his death. There will be no embalming. It was sudden and we don’t want anybody to speculate.
“That massage on his leg had taken one hour before the distress. There was no sign of ill-health (before) and Keshi had not complained recently.”
He assured that the autopsy report from qualified doctors would be made public at a press conference befitting Mr. Keshi’s status.

Crime / Benue Residents: Herdsmen Still Here, Even Policemen Fled When They Saw Them by LadyNaija(f): 3:35pm On Jan 15, 2018
On the first day of 2018 when many were celebrating, suspected herdsmen invaded communities in Logo and Guma local government areas of Benue, and not even children were spared.

Although it’s been two weeks since the incident took place, locals say both LGAs are still being occupied by the perpetrators of the deadly attacks.

“The herdsmen are still there, and we can’t just return,” Fafa, one of the farmers displaced from a village in Guma, told TheCable.

Fafa and his family had made a run for their lives the moment they heard of the attacks on a nearby village.

“We were running and hoping we see security operatives to help us return because we know these herders will loot our storehouse, but nobody was there to provide security for us,” he said.

‘POLICEMEN LEFT US AND RAN AWAY’

At a primary school in Daudu, a village in Guma where Fafa and hundreds of displaced persons are being camped, the people are increasingly worried over the security situation.

Elisha, a displaced farmer, told TheCable that “policemen ran away” upon sighting herdsmen.

“Once, the policemen came and told us to follow them so that we can get foodstuff from our storehouse, but when they saw the herdsmen, they left us and ran away,” he said.

Several other displaced persons expressed fear of returning home, citing the lack of security operatives on ground to protect them from possible attacks.

When contacted, Moses Yamu, Benue state police public relations officer, said adequate security had been provided in the affected areas.

“I don’t know how people will say there is no police presence in Logo and Guma,” he told TheCable.

“But, can police secure every house in the place? You don’t expect police to escort you or to go and stand in your house before you will go and stay in your house.

“If policeman will be planted in every house, do you think police will go round? Security has been fortified along that axis and we have not recorded any case of attack for the past three or four days now. And that is to tell you that the presence of the security is everywhere.”

Celebrities / Lagos ‘sues’ AY, Davido For Tax Evasion by LadyNaija(f): 1:55pm On Jan 14, 2018
The Lagos state government has reportedly sued entertainers Davido and Ayo Makun, better known as AY, for tax evasion.
According to PUNCH, both celebrities have had a long-running battle with the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) over alleged tax evasion.
Davido was reportedly charged before a Lagos high court in July 2017 and risks a jail term if convicted while AY was said to have been charged to court in 2016 for failing to file his tax returns.
Davido was said to have claimed that he pays taxes to Osun since he is an indigene of the state while AY said he makes his tax payments to Ondo state.

“Remember that Davido said he made N500m from his N30bn concert recently. We must know how much he paid to the LIRS,” the report quoted a source as saying.

“AY too said the same thing. The comedian claimed to be paying his taxes to Ondo State, where he hails from. It seems these celebrities don’t understand that the tax law stipulates that you must pay your tax to your state of residence.

“Anyway, we are already in court. Others will soon appear in court if they don’t obey the state tax law. You can’t be making money in Lagos and refuse to pay tax.”

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in collaboration with the federal ministry of finance has been working to increase tax compliance with programmes like the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS).

The Presidency, in a message posted on its Twitter handle, @NGRPresidency, explained that this was to secure vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks in the three states.
“@HQNigerianArmy has deployed Special Forces To Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa States to secure vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks,” the Presidency tweeted.
Earlier yesterday, Information Minister Lai Mohammed had told State House reporters that a decision on troops deployment was yet to be made.
Army spokesman, Brigadier General Sani Usman, also yesterday confirmed the deployment to the three states check the menace of herders and farmers clashes.

Killings by herdsmen: Soyinka lambasts FG, death toll in Taraba rises
Thu, 11 Jan 2018
Renowned playwright, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says the Federal Government is responsible for the wanton killings perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen in the country.
Soyinka in a statement on Wednesday titled, ‘Holy Cow: Impunity Rides Again,’ said the government was “looking the other way” as the herdsmen went on the rampage across the country.
He said, “Yes, indeed the government is culpable, definitely guilty of “looking the other way. Indeed, it must be held complicit.”
The Nobel laureate said history was repeating itself with the herdsmen’s case, recalling that Boko Haram was still at that stage of “putative probes when cries of alarm emerged.”

Why herdsmen are killing our people, by governor
Thu, 11 Jan 2018
Killer-herdsmen have extended their bloody campaign to Taraba State, killing 55 people in Lau Local Government Area.
About 200 homes and huge piles of foodstuff were destroyed. Many people are missing in the attacks, which began last weekend.
Twenty-five bodies were recovered and given a mass burial on Tuesday when reporters and Bala Dan Abu, a media assistant to Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku, visited the area.
Policemen and soldiers cordoned off the area as the burial was hurriedly done by angry youths amid fear of the attackers coming for them.

Herdsmen attacks: IPOB, rights group want deployment of soldiers to Benue, Taraba
Thu, 11 Jan 2018
The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday carpeted President Muhammadu Buhari over his alleged inability to tackle the killings of innocent citizens of the people of Benue and Taraba states by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The group demanded immediate deployment of soldiers to the affected areas to tame the situation against earlier directive of the president for deployment of policemen to the areas.

A statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, said the president shouldn’t have, in the first instance, directed the Inspector General of Police to relocate to Benue State when he knew that police could not tackle the situation.

“We are still wondering why the Nigerian Government could not send soldiers to aid its citizens in Benue, Taraba, Kaduna and other states where Fulani herdsmen are rampaging and killing innocent citizens with impunity.

“If the Nigerian government and her security agencies are sincere about tackling the menace of Fulani herdsmen, they must also deploy their soldiers to Benue and Taraba states with the same shoot-at-sight order they readily applied against peaceful Biafra agitators.”

Fayose holds security summit with hunters over killer herdsmen
Thu, 11 Jan 2018
Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose yesterday held an emergency security summit with hunters from the 16 local government areas of the state.

Clad in military fatigue, the governor ordered the huntsmen to set up a 24-hour surveillance of the state to prevent attacks by herdsmen.
The governor’s rather unconventional approach follows the recent massacre by herdsmen of over 70 people in Benue State amid widespread condemnation of Federal Government’s poor handling of the incident.

“The Federal Government should have sent the army to Benue, not the police,” Fayose said. And to his Benue State counterpart, he declared: “Governor Ortom should fasten his belt and protect his people. Those seeking help in Abuja would not find it because Abuja also needs help.”

He told the hunter-delegates: “Tell them Ekiti is a no-go area. My state is a no-go area. Those who want to make Ekiti ungovernable are wasting their time. Don’t kill anybody but defend your towns. Keep vigil on Ekiti. Don’t sleep again. Arise and fight for our people. How can the life of a cow be worth more than the life of men? My hunters! Go and represent me well. If you have juju, use it. Make them (herdsmen) sleep off. Anything you have, use it. Make sure your people are not killed.”

Zakzaky may die in detention ' Shi'ites
Thu, 11 Jan 2018
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, yesterday, raised the alarm that their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El Zakzaky, who had been in detention for over two years, may die in government custody, following a deterioration of his health. The alarm came on a day the Police again cracked down on protesting members of the group in Abuja.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, yesterday, Chairman of the Resource Forum of the IMN, Prof. Abdullahi Danladi, said a recent visit by family members of the detained leader indicated that his health had taken a dive for the worse. According to him, the detained leader’s wife, who is also being held by government, has bullets lodged in her body that had not been extracted. He said: “Following a rare visit to our leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, it was discovered that the health situation of the Sheikh has taken a nosedive for the worse. “He had suffered what turned out to be a stroke but the authorities illegally detaining him had kept a blind eye to his dire situation.
