Politics / Olisa Metuh’s True Health Status Revealed by LadyNaija(f): 5:38pm On Mar 19, 2018
former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, arrived the Federal High Court, Abuja, venue of his ongoing corruption trial on a stretcher after being taken down from an ambulance.

Mr. Metuh’s lawyer had, at the last adjourned date, informed the court presided by Justice Okon Abang that his client was at the Nnamdi Azikiwe specialist hospital for treatment on spinal cord complications.

The lawyers, led by Onyeachi Ikpeazu, asked for a long adjournment after presenting the hospital’s medical report on Mr. Metuh’s health condition.

But Mr. Abang refused the application for a long adjournment and threatened to allow the application made by the prosecution for the revocation of Mr. Metuh’s bail if Mr. Metuh was not in court on Monday.

However, on seeing the spokesperson in court on a stretcher on Monday morning, the judge adjourned the matter till March 15.

“I have seen the condition that the first defendant is. Seeing the condition, I am inclined to adjourn this matter to allow the first defendant attend his trial”.

Family members and associates surrounded the PDP spokesperson, preventing journalists from taking his picture on the stretcher.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOzODlesy_Q

The Nigerian government has assured that the Dapchi schoolgirls recently abducted by Boko Haram terrorists will soon regain freedom.

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, gave this assurance during an interview on Dateline Abuja, a Channels Television’s programme which aired on Saturday.

Asked to give a time frame, he said: “It can be earlier; maybe a week, it can be two weeks, but we are on it, and I’m telling you with all sense of sincerity that we are closing in on them”.

“We have dispatched all the surveillance devices we have in terms of air, human resource, intelligence, and other forces that needed to be in place by all possible means and we have made sure that all that’s needed is being done to see that these girls are being found, wherever they are.”

Dan-Ali was also confident that the girls would return in the shortest time owing to the intelligence at the government’s disposal, though he could not say the exact time when this would be.

A faction of Boko Haram is believed to have kidnapped students of Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, in Yobe State on February 19.

Religion / Is All Baptised Christians, Born Again? by LadyNaija(f): 11:05am On Mar 18, 2018
Jesus while answering a question from Nicodemus recorded in John 3:3 said: “I tell you the truth, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again”.

Jesus while answering a question from Nicodemus recorded in John 3:3 said: “I tell you the truth, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again”.

He went on to explain in John 3:5-7, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the spirit gives birth to spirit”.

Baptism gives us supernatural life. We are taught that it removes original sin; we are born with souls which are supernaturally dead. Original sin “sensu stricto”, is not a “blot” upon the soul but absence of something. Theologians tell us that it is like darkness where there should have been light. When one gets baptism, the spiritual vacuum in his/her soul (which we call original sin) disappears and God’s presence takes over.

Baptism does not take away only the original sin, but as in the case of an adult, it takes away all sins committed up to that moment of baptism and the person has a new beginning – born again, adopted child of God and heir to the kingdom of God.

1Peter 3: 20-21 compared the effect of baptism with the flood during Noah’s time when eight people were saved through water. He said, “….In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water and this water symbolises baptism that now saves you also ...” He explained that you are saved through water, not because of water’s physical action but through the power of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, through baptism’s spiritual effects.

This article is written in response to the general view that born again Christians are saved and are destined for heaven whereas other baptised Christians are doomed. In order to understand this new birth, let us first examine the Baptism of Our Lord by John the Baptist at river Jordan (cf. Matt.3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:30-34).

What were the principal events on that occasion? First of all, all the Three Persons were present: Voice from heaven was God the Father, the dove was the Holy Spirit and Jesus was physically present. The events: 1. Jesus goes into water and is baptised 2. Heavens opens and the Holy Spirit descends upon him in the form of a dove and 3. Voice of God the Father speaks from heaven saying “This is my beloved Son.

This scene gives a graphic depiction of what happens at our baptism: a) We are baptised with water symbolising our dying with Christ (Rom.6:3) and our rising with Christ to the newness of life (Rom.6:4-5) b) we receive the gift of sanctifying grace and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1Cor.12:13; Gal.3:27) and c) we are adopted as God’s sons (children) (Rom8:15-17).

Often people miss to understand the fact that baptism gives us new life/new birth because they have an impoverished view of the grace God gives through baptism, which they think is a mere symbol. Baptism is much more than a mere symbol. In the Acts 2:38, Peter said, “Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit”.

When Paul (Saul) was converted, he was told, “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptised, and wash away your sins, calling on his name” (Acts 22:16).

When a Catholic says that he is born again, he refers to the transformation that God’s grace accomplish in him during baptism. The Greek translation of “born of water and spirit” literally means one birth of water-and spirit; if it meant born of water and of the spirit it would have implied two different births – one of water and one of spirit which born again Christians would like us to believe. For an Evangelical or “born again” Christian to be saved, he refers to an occasion or a crusade where perhaps after listening to some preaching or sermon, his life is transformed.

Usually the preacher will announce, “If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and believe he died for your sins, you will be born again”. So the Christians make a decision for Christ then the preacher calls them forward to be led in “the sinner’s prayer”. Then the preacher announces to them after the sinner’s prayer that they have been saved.

Once this is done, a new batch of “born again” Christians is formed who portray themselves as destined to heaven. This is not in the Bible. Even Paul in his letter to Timothy (1Tim 1:15), said “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, - of whom I am the worst….” He told Timothy “fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience” (1Tim 1:18-19).

This shows that no matter how much grace one has received from God, he can never get to beyond the place where he is reckoned a sinner.

Some Evangelicals/born again say that water in John 3:5 was referring to amniotic fluid present at child birth. This is a shocking revelation because Jesus could have said, “You must be born of amniotic fluid and the spirit”.

This would imply baptism is an “internal” baptism but the Bible shows it is external: In Acts 2:38 people are told to take action, “Be baptised….in the name of Jesus Christ”. At Paul’s conversion at Damascus, “….He got up and was baptised and after taking some food, he regained his strength.” This was water baptism.

In most of Paul’s writings, he was reminding people of their water baptism and never implied anything about some sort of “invisible spiritual baptism” which has no biblical basis whatsoever.

So who are the born again Christians the ‘Bible way’? Born again are all those Christians who have been water baptised in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matt 28:19).

This is an entry point to salvation but the real salvation comes later when they “obey everything I have commanded you” (Matt. 28: 20).

Politics / Boko Haram ‘terribly’ Degraded NOT Defeated, Says Femi Adesina by LadyNaija(f): 3:14pm On Feb 26, 2018
Femi Adesina, spokesman President Muhammadu Buhari, says despite the abduction of Dapchi schoolgirls, Boko Haram insurgents have been “terribly degraded”.

Speaking on a Channels TV programme on Sunday, he said the insurgents were “running riots” in all parts of the country before the current administration came on board.

A total of 110 students of Government Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe, were abducted during the attack which happened on Monday.

Adesina said even though the Dapchi attack should not have happened, the insurgents attacked struck in Yobe because they have “lost out” in Sambisa forest — in Borno state — their stronghold.

“I just want to appeal to the parents of those girls to please bear with the government and trust that the government will do all that is possible and necessary to bring those students back,” he said.

“The insurgency was endemic in three states — Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. But Adamawa and Yobe has been quite under control because the insurgents were driven out completely.

“So it is not unlikely that when they lost out in Sambisa forest, they then found their way back to Yobe which was why what happened, happened. But I’m sure the military is responding adequately to this.”

When asked if the insurgents have been “totally defeated” like the Nigerian army claims, Adesina replied: “If the question is totally, I will say no. But have they been degraded? I will say yes. Terribly, so.”

He added: “Compare how the situation was before this administration came. They were virtually running riots everywhere. You can’t compare then and now. They have been terribly, terribly degraded. But is the war over, no, it is not over.”

Politics / DAILY TRUST: Shekau, Insurgents Relocate To Borno Villages With Hostages by LadyNaija(f): 6:27am On Feb 06, 2018
Boko Haram factional leader, Abubakar Shekau, fled his Sambisa Forest sanctuary shortly before the military stormed and captured the area, Daily Trust has learnt.
Shekau and his fighters have now relocated into remote villages in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, villagers and local hunters told the Daily Trust yesterday.

They said hundreds of the insurgents as well as unspecified number of captives, including some of the remaining Chibok girls abducted in April 2014 as well as police women taken away last year, had occupied new abodes at Gambale axis in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
They said Shekau shuttles between Dumur and Duhuwa villages while his fighters and many hostages live in Falturam, Darfada, Uye, Barkin, Lukshe, Luksheab-amarwa, Mulgwailawanti and Gwarimari.
Sources said residents in those villages are terrified that they will fall victims to the terrorists’ raid for food and recruits.
Jumne Mamman, a local farmer from Falturam who fled to Maiduguri, yesterday, said Shekau and his men had established presence in many hamlets and villages around Konduga and other locations in Bama and Gwoza local governments since he fled from Sambisa forest where the Nigerian Air Force and ground troops had intensified operations in the last few weeks.
Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole said on Saturday that the Nigerian Army had completely defeated the Boko Haram insurgents.
“My soldiers are in the heart of Boko Haram enclave that is ‘Camp Zairo”, the gallant troops have taken total control of Sambisa Forest.
“We have broken the heart and soul of Shekau’s group, taking over the camp and its environs,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that similar feat was achieved by the army in December 2016 when it announced the capture of Camp Zairo and later took to President Muhammadu Buhari at the Villa, a copy of the Holy Qur’an and Boko Haram flag purportedly belonging to Shekau.
In March 2017, the military authorities opened the Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship (NASAC) at Camp Zairo which was renamed after Lt. Col. Abu Ali who was killed on Nov 2. 2016.
Sources said after the success last year, the Nigerian security operatives vacated the Sambisa area at the onset of raining season, a development that encouraged Shekau to move back until the recent onslaught.
In the latest offensive with the massive deployment of ground troops aided by aerial reconnaissance in Sambisa, villagers, hunters and community leaders said the new communities taken over by Shekau were as good as the Sambisa because there is water and other basic needs for the survival of the terrorists.
“The area where the insurgents thrive now has plenty of streams and rivers that feed the Gombole dam,” another villager who does not want to be named, said.
Another source said the new locations could also serve as obstacles to movement of troops and equipment. “The new areas would definitely provide the terrorists military advantage; in fact the places are just like harbours and something must be done in the next couple of months to dislodge them before the raining season sets in to avert going back to square one,” he said.
It was also gathered that the Abu-Musab Albarnawi faction of the Boko Haram dislodged from locations in the Lake Chad region, have found new places along the River Yobe around Yunusari Local Government Area that shares borders with Niger Republic and northern fringes of Borno State.
“There is thick forest around the River Yobe and the terrorists have established new homes in villages like Bulabulin, Alagarno, Mattari and Kayaderi,” a source said.
Shettima applauds FGs fight against insurgency
Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has lauded efforts of the federal government in its fight against Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast.
The governor stated this on Monday while addressing the 9th edition of the town hall meeting in Maiduguri.
Shettima praised the efforts of the theatre commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj Gen. Rogers Nicholas and the field commander, multi national joint task force (MNJTF) Maj Gen. Lucky Irabor in degrading the Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast.
He said the troops had successfully combed every corner of Sambisa forest.
He noted that under the theatre commanders, the military had made massive achievements in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency.
He urged the Federal Government to provide more support to the military ahead of the rainy season, saying if the rainy season sets in, the Sambisa Forest can become marshy and thick for the insurgents to find a way to regroup.
“To most of us in the northeast, terrorism is not a subject of philosophical history but a reality of everyday life, so if there are any set of people who are the beneficiaries of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration strides in the fight against insecurity, is we in the northeast” the governor said.
Shettima noted that four years ago, nobody could venture out of Maiduguri beyond 10 kilometres before “you are in Boko Haram territory. The only road to Maiduguri was the Maiduguri-Kano road which was also subjected to sporadic attacks by the insurgents.
“Basically, what the Armed Forces have achieved in the past three to six weeks was not achieved in three years. The theatre commander recording these successes is an Igbo man from Imo State, Gen Nicholas Rogers.
“We will urge the federal government to render more support to the Armed Forces because if the rainy season sets in the Sambisa Forest becomes a fortress for Boko Haram and they might use the opportunity to regroup. It is pertinent for us to maintain this tempo.”
The minister of Defence, Gen. Mansur Dan Ali, told the gathering that there has been reduction in activities of insecurity in the country adding that security agencies are now ever ready to curb insecurity in the country.
He also lauded the efforts of the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) for their aerial bombardment of the strong holds of the insurgents.
On the welfare of troops, he said the current administration has always paid there allowance and salaries, which serves as motivation, and troops who overstayed in the epicentre of war are redeployed.
In his address, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said “Today, Boko Haram is no longer capable of carrying out coordinated attacks anywhere. All they do now is to engage in cowardly attacks on soft targets. That, in itself, is a sign of weakness.”
“Let’s be clear: We didn’t get to where we are today by accident. Our gallant men and women in uniform have made all the sacrifices, including the supreme sacrifice, to bring us here” he added.
“Our political and military leaders have shown leadership in getting us here, unlike in the past when, in the words of Mr. President, official bungling, negligence, complacency or collusion made Boko Haram a terrifying force. The ordinary folks have also shown great resilience and support to bring us here. We are eternally grateful to all” he further noted.
Alhaji Mohammed said over this past weekend alone, the military handed over more than 82 women and children rescued from the insurgents to the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) right here in Maiduguri.
Senator Muhammad Ali Ndume, representing Southern Borno Senatorial District, complained that the Boko Haram insurgency had left the region with destructions worth $96billion (about N2.3trillion).
Senator Ndume however said while international donors generated N230billion for the reconstruction of the region in the last one year, the 2018 federal budgetary allocation to the PCNI for the purpose is only N45billion.
He appealed to the federal government to increase the allocation.
Senator Ndume rebuked the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning for giving the over 75 NGOs in the region the latitude to operate obnoxiously alone.
The Minister of Interior, Abdurrahman Dambazau, who said 80 percent of refugees in Cameroon hail from Borno, casted doubt on the repatriation of refugees from that Francophone country as scheduled, without adequate preparations for their resettlement and rebuilding of trust and confidence in them in their respective communities of return because, he said, according to the Kampala Convention, the refugees should return home if they wish to, but not to return to other camps.
Budget and National Planning Minister, Zainab Ahmed, described 2018 as the year of the return of IDPs to their respective communities, as she replied Ndume on the operation of the NGOs, saying that it was caused by poor screening, certification and registration of such NGOs.
Adamawa State Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Sajo, representing Governor Muhammadu Bindow, said the insurgency had plunged 11 out of the 21 local government areas of the state into “over 70 percent poverty incidence and also called for narrative change and the tackling of drug abuse among the youth of the region.
Nigeria inducts Cameroonian forces
The Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, has inducted Cameroonian troops who arrived Gwoza to join in the ongoing counter terrorism operations in the north east and the borders between Nigeria and Cameroon.
The Theatre Commander was accompanied by the leader of the Cameroonian Defence Forces delegation Brigadier General Djonkeb Frederick, the General Officer Commanding 7-Division Major General Ibrahim Yusuf, the Chief of Staff Headquarters, Theatre Command, Brigadier General IL Akinlawon and other senior military officers from both countries.
Army Spokesman at Theater Command, Col. Oyenma Uwachukwu, said in a statement yesterday in Maiduguri that the Theatre Commander charged them to exhibit discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their assigned tasks and duties.
The Nigerian Army also said yesterday additional 26 insurgents have surrendered to the troops.

Olisa Metuh, forrmer spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), arrived at the federal high court, Abuja, in an ambulance on Monday.

Metuh is standing trial over allegations of receiving N400 million from Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser, and also money laundering charges involving $2 billion.

He was absent when the case was heard in court last week.

Onyeachi Ikpeazu (SAN), his counsel, had said his client was absent because he was admitted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, and was unable to attend court.

Ikpeazu presented a letter written by a doctor in the hospital to the court, but both the judge and the prosecutor questioned the authenticity of the letter.

Okon Abang, the judge, had ordered Metuh to appear or risk being arrested.

He was wheeled into the court premises amid reactions from people present.

Abang had to adjourn the matter till March 15, expressing satisfaction with the position of Ikpeazu, that his client his indisposed.

Politics / PUNCH: Relocate To Kano, Gov Ganduje Tells Herdsmen by LadyNaija(f): 7:12am On Feb 05, 2018

The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Sunday called on all Fulani herdsmen in some parts of the country, especially in Benue and Taraba states, to relocate to Kano State.

Ganduje said Kano State had “vast grazing land” to accommodate herdsmen and their cattle.

The governor stated this during the monitoring of the state’s “free vaccination of over one million cattle and other small animals” at Kadawa Artificial Insemination Centre in the Garum Malam Local Government Area of the state.

The exercise titled, ‘Towards Conservation of Livestock Resource and Animal Protein for Citizens of Kano,’ was part of activities marking the 2017/2018 livestock vaccination programme.

Ganduje, who condemned the “recent killings during the clashes between farmers and herdsmen,” said they were unacceptable.

The governor said the vaccination was initiated to keep animals healthy and improve the economy of the state.

He said as part of the government’s commitment to encouraging herdsmen in the state, Kano State Government had been providing facilities that would accommodate the herdsmen and their cattle to discourage them from moving to other states in search of grazing land.

Ganduje said, “Fulani herdsmen of Kano origin do not move out of Kano to other states because we have enough grazing land, ranches and traditional stock route. They don’t have any reason to move out of the state. We take care of them and we accord them the respect and dignity they deserve.

“I am inviting herdsmen from all parts of Nigeria to relocate to Kano because we have enough facilities to accommodate them. We have grazing land in Rogo, Gaya, Kura, Tudun Wada, Ungogo and other places, where facilities have been provided to accommodate the herdsmen and their cattle.”

The governor added that his administration was already in collaboration with the Federal Government and foreign agencies to convert the Falgore Game Reserve into a modern grazing land.

“Falgore Game Reserve can take care of millions of herdsmen and their cattle in Nigeria. The location has been designed to accommodate schools, human and animal clinics, markets, recreational centres and other social amenities that would provide the herdsmen enough comfort to take care of their animals and transact their business without any hindrance.

“These killings must stop. We cannot afford to continue to witness these senseless killings in the name of Fulani herdsmen and farmers clash over lack of grazing land when we have a place like the Falgore Game Reserve, which is being underutilised.”

Ganduje also said his administration had embarked on the registration of herdsmen and their cattle to enable the government to take care of them through free vaccination and other incentives.

‘Tiv people flee 25 villages’

The indigenous Tiv people of Kadarko in the Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have reportedly fled 25 villages over attacks by herdsmen.

Community leaders, under the auspices of the Concerned Indigenous Tiv People of Kadarko, said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday.

Spokesman for the group, Dr Benjamin Agbede, said they decided to cry out because there appeared to be an orchestrated plot to force them out of their ancestral land.

He explained that they were worried that since the outbreak of hostilities on January 15, 2018, Tiv farmers had been left to their fate.

Agbede said, “It is on record that the governor (Tanko Al-Makura) visited the areas and saw the dead bodies on January 30, 2018, but he merely directed that the corpses should be buried by the families of the deceased without any assistance.

“We were shocked that a paltry sum of N500,000 was made available to be shared by the families of those killed and those in different hospitals.

“For the avoidance of doubt, 12 people were killed and more than 30 are receiving treatment in different hospitals.

“We are deeply worried that although the area is inhabited by other ethnic nationalities, only the Tiv people are targets of the terrorists.”

Another community leader, Felix Akie, said, “We wonder why the police did not respond on time to save our people after we made distress calls when the shootings and killings were going on in Agwan Tiv.”

They appealed to the federal and state governments to come to their aid by ensuring that peace returned so that they could return home and resume their normal lives.

The community leaders named some of the 25 affected villages to include Azer, Tamen Bature, Dooga, Che Utsaha, Nyam Adaga, Cha, Igbacha, Shatse, Ngur and Nguchi.

Gunmen kill cop, resident in Benue

Two separate attacks on communities in the troubled Logo and Guma local government areas of Benue State have left two persons dead, including a policeman, while many others are missing

The first incident, according to sources, occurred at Anyiin community in the Logo LGA when suspected herdsmen on Saturday attacked and killed a trader, identified as Abuchi, believed to be of Igbo origin.

It was gathered that the gunmen, suspected to be Fulani militia, opened fire on Igbo traders who were coming back from a local market around 6pm, killing Abuchi and injuring others.

A resident of Anyiin, Terkaa Tim, said Abuchi was a popular Igbo trader in the area.

According to him, the attack which led to his death took place along Gbeji-Anyiin Road.

He said the victim’s remains were recovered by the police near Ayoo Udu village.

Our correspondent further learnt that following the attack, the Igbo people in Benue threatened a showdown.

Although efforts to reach the President of the Igbo Community in Benue State were unsuccessful as of press time, a friend of the victim, Chima Wanchukwu, lamented the action of the herdsmen.

But the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said he was not aware of the incident in Logo.

He said the only report on his table was from Tarka, where a man and his family, who were travelling to Calabar, were attacked by bandits while they were changing their vehicle’s flat tyre.

“The family’s car had a flat tyre around the Police Training School in Tarka; and while he was changing the tyre, he was attacked by bandits, but they managed to escape unhurt into the college.

“I am not aware of the killing of an Igbo man in Logo, but we have decided to provide escorts for the man and his family to their destination,” Owoseni said.

In a related development, the team deployed by the state police command in Yogbo community in the Guma LGA came under attack on Sunday.

The state Police Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, who confirmed the attack, said the police team responded and engaged the gunmen in a shootout, which led to the killing of three of the gunmen.

He added that their corpses were taken away by their fleeing members, who “also suffered severe gunshot injuries.”

Yamu stated that the command lost one officer, while another one had yet to be seen.

The PPRO said, “The police are intensifying efforts with the aim of curbing armed attacks and apprehending criminal elements using tribal sentiment to cause mayhem.

“The command will also ensure adequate security to encourage residents to return to areas hitherto deserted.”

Declare herdsmen terrorists –Seadogs

The Nigerian Association of Seadogs, also known as Pyrates, has called on the Federal Government to declare and treat herdsmen in the country as terrorists.

The group explained that declaring cattle herders in Nigeria terrorists had become imperative following their activities that had led to the death of scores of Nigerians.

NAS President, Arthur Boje, who made the call during a medical outreach organised by the association at Oro-Ochiri community in Rebisi town, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said herdsmen were also responsible for the sacking of some communities in the country.

The medical outreach was part of the association’s programme to mark its Quarter 2 Pyrates Working Committee meeting.

Boje said, “We are not happy with the killings going on in parts of the country. There is no way you will be satisfied when your brothers and sisters are killed senselessly and the government is not doing enough to save the situation.

“What those herdsmen are doing is orchestrated. It is tactically planned. These are people that have infiltrated into the country, aided by some people on the ground and also sponsored by people here.

“They are terrorists and the Federal Government should treat them as such. They are not herdsmen; they are professional killers brought from outside into the country to cause havoc.”

Politics / IBB Disowns Statement Issued By Spokesman by LadyNaija(f): 7:03pm On Feb 04, 2018
Former military President Ibrahim Babangida has disowned a statement which Kassim Afegbua, his spokesman, issued on his behalf on Sunday.

At excatly 2:03pm, Afegbua sent out the statement with the title: “Press statement from General IBB on 2019 election”.

The statement was well circulated on media platforms, including Naijanewspapers.

But hours later, another statement was issued.

TheCable understands that Afegbua would be on Channels Television on Sunday night to clarify issues on the controversy.

Below is the new statement personally signed by the former military ruler:

It has been drawn to my attention a press statement on the State of the nation, particularly 2019 general elections and beyond.

Let me categorically state that as former President and Statesman, I have unfettered channel of communication with the highest authorities without sensational public correspondence, therefore those views expressed over there are personal views of the writer.

However, with due respect to individual opinion and constitutional rights, it is worrisome that Political events and civil unrest in many part of the country, has raised many questions on the governance and unity. Indeed 2018 is inundated with seasons of literatures on the corporate existence of this country. Many of such literatures have shown concerns of the corporate existence of Nigeria beyond 2019 general elections.

It will be recalled, that in my message to this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, I specifically expressed the dire need for proactive measures to stop farmers/herders clashes in the middle belt, Cattle rustling, armed robbery, Kidnapping, gangsterism and Cultism. Our security agencies have to step up surveillance with more efforts on intelligence gathering for maximum success.

Recent happenings and utterances by political gladiators is alarming and not in the interest of common man that is already overstretched and apparently living from hand to mouth due to precarious economic conditions. Despite all these challenges, I am optimistic that the political actors will play within the ambits of political norms and decorum to ameliorate the problems facing our society now.

I am a realist that believes in all issues in a democratic atmosphere are sincerely discussed and resolved in the spirit of give and take. Since after my military years that metamorphosed to the only Military President in the history of Nigeria and my civilian life, I always have one clear objective that freedom can only be achieved through democracy. Some people find this freedom as an avenue for eroding democracy by antics of hate speeches under the guise of religion, tribal or self imposed mentorship. This trend of pitching political class and the people is unhealthy and skewed.

The clamour for re-alignment of governance in the country as we are approaching 2019 election year is a welcome development only if the agitations are genuinely channeled through legislation and total supremacy of the constitution . Any attempt outside this circle of democratic tenants is deceptive and divisive idea capable of plunging our political journey into disarray.

Our present political parties and their structures need parameter pillars that will make them more strong with unique ideologies. However, our present political parties need surgical operation that will fusion them in to a reasonable numbers. I have been an advocate of two party systems but in our present reality in Nigeria, our political parties can fusion into strong political association/party that can form a formidable opposition to a ruling party.

As students of history, we are aware that many advanced democracies have two distinct ideological political parties, with a handful of smaller political parties that serve as buffer whenever any of the known political parties derailed or became unpopular. I still believe in two party systems as the best option for Nigeria.
It is high time that, we dialogue more on any issue in order to have a political solution on any problem affecting us. It is sad that, Nigeria had its fare share of conflicts, and we cannot continue to fall back to those dark years of bloodshed.
As a people, now is the time to come together to address all Communal conflicts and criminality under any guise to further unite the country in line with the vision of our founding fathers so that as a nation, we can forge ahead in the task of building a more prosperous nation.

He further implored the partnership and cooperation of the Nigerian army and other security operatives in the state to help enforce the directives.

Politics / We Will Do Everything Legitimate To Bounce Back To Power - PDP Declares by LadyNaija(f): 2:15pm On Feb 04, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has maintained that it will do everything within the confines of the law to ensure that it returns to power in 2019. The national chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, told the Punch in report published on Sunday, February 4, that the PDP remained the best option for the county at the moment.

He said the opposition party was engaged in reconciliation talks with some members who left the party, adding that the issue of concern to the PDP at the moment was how to rescue the country from incompetent hands.

Secondus said: “We are talking to everyone, those who left the party before and those who do not belong to the party. “This is not the time to be talking about automatic tickets or not. Rather, we should all be concerned about how to rescue the country from the claws of incompetent hands. “Is there anyone in the country who is not feeling the pain? Is the market for the PDP members different from that of the APC members? Are those lining up in the queues at petrol stations members of a particular political party? Is electricity being diverted to a particular zone of the country? “As for us, we are discussing with everybody.

We want everyone back under the umbrella so that we can escape further beating by the APC acidic rain.” The party is also reported to be wooing members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly with automatic tickets. This followed fears expressed by members of the APC in the National Assembly that governors of their respective states were after their seats, thereby threatening their chances of getting their return tickets.

Politics / APC Restructuring Report Is Nigeria’s ‘biggest Scam’ Nigerians Have Ever Seen by LadyNaija(f): 4:49pm On Feb 02, 2018
Ken Okolugbo, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says the document brought forward by the All Progressives Congress (APC) committee on restructuring is Nigeria’s “biggest scam”.

He said this on Thursday when he featured on Channels Television.

Last week, the committee headed by Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, submitted its report to the party’s leadership.

Among the things it recommended were state police, state judicial council, fiscal federalism and independent candidature.

Okolugbo described the report as a ploy “to deceive Nigerians”.

“It is the biggest scam Nigerians have ever seen. By this time next year, you will see that APC would have done nothing on restructuring,” he said.

“I am hundred percent sure they will not implement it.”

He said his doubt on the implementation of the report is because el-Rufai “does not believe in restructuring”.

According to him, the report “coming from el-Rufai, is very distasteful”.

He said: “The most painful aspect of it is the fact that the driver of this process, el-Rufai, was the same person that once said here in Channels TV studio that those people that were talking about restructuring were political opportunists who were only irresponsible and out to attract attention to themselves.

“So the document is coming from a man that does not even believe in restructuring. If you look at the manifesto of APC, everything that they have done, they have wasted public funds as far as I am concerned.”

He said the party went round the states while working on the report “because they only want to sell it to Nigerians to win their votes”.

“The truth about it is that all these things were in their manifesto – the same federalism we were talking about, the same resource control, state police, state electoral commissions having registers of their own. They talked about it in their manifesto.”

Buhari to youths: watch character of aspirants
Fri, 02 Feb 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday urged the youth to be concerned about the character of those who aspire to lead Nigeira. He said they should offer themselves for service.

“Being apolitical, ultimately, does you no good as political leaders make decisions that affect you in many ways. As such, you should be concerned about the character of those who aspire to lead you, just as I urge you to offer yourselves to serve where possible. “

Yesterday’s admonition by the President came as the race for the general elections next year gather steam following last week’s “special press statement” by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which has generated a flurry of political activities, including Wednesday’s inauguration of the Obasanjo-promoted Coalition for Nigeria Movement in Abuja.

President Buhari, represented by a former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof. Shehu Abdullahi, told graduands at the 27th Convocation of the Federal University of Nigeria, Minna, the Niger State capital, of the need for mentorship of upcoming leaders to teach them the right thing. ”It has become imperative as we mentor those who aspire to succeed us as the leaders of a better Nigerian,” he said.

The lawmakers have petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari to take action to stem the attack. The governor dropped hint of the attack yesterday in Jalingo when the National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Uche Secondus, paid him a condolence visit over the death of the member representing Takum in the State House of Assembly, Hosea Ibi. He said the state has had its share of herdsmen attacks and killings since the beginning of the year, noting that the situation in his state was as bad as that of Benue. He said: ‘’National chairman, it’s indeed a thing of joy for you and the National Working Committee, NWC, of our party to come and condole with us here in Taraba. Politics / Jonathan, Dickson Others Seek Implementation Of Restructuring Report by LadyNaija(f): 7:53am On Feb 02, 2018
Ijaw leaders, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State have advised President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to sincerely implement the recommendations of the party’s panel led by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.

They gave the advice yesterday when Dickson led a delegation of some Ijaw leaders to the home of the former president to deliberate on the APC report on restructuring. The Ijaw leaders said a holistic and sincere implementation of the recommendations on restructuring would encourage inter-ethnic harmony and development in the country.

A statement by the Special Adviser to Governor Dickson on Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, quoted Jonathan as saying the issues which fell under the purview of the committee were exhaustively treated during the 2014 National Conference whose implementation would definitely move the nation forward.

Meanwhile, a group, Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard, has alleged that the APC, through the report, is trying to indirectly reintroduce onshore/offshore dichotomy in the oil sector.

According to the group, the committee which recommended resource control, among others, is reintroducing the dichotomy by stating specifically that oil mineral found onshore should belong to the Federal Government while those found offshore should be owned by the states.

Akwa Ibom is a major beneficiary of the abrogated dichotomy as most of the oil resource which have earned the state much revenue, based on derivation principle, are found offshore.Spokesman of the group, Senator Anietie Okon, warned yesterday in Uyo that any attempt to reintroduce resource control based on offshore/onshore dichotomy would create more crises in the Niger Delta.

There is a plan to attack Taraba in 10 days Governor says state buried 63 victims in one day
Fri, 02 Feb 2018
The Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Darius Ishaku, has said there is a plan to attack the state in the next 10 days.

The governor also said the information had been passed to security agencies, adding that he was not aware that any action had been taken.

Ishaku spoke in Jalingo on Thursday when he received members of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party who paid him a sympathy visit on the death of a member of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Hosea Ibi.

The governor told the PDP delegation, which was led by the National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, that peace had become a scarce commodity in the state.

He said, “When I assumed office, I asked my people to give me peace and that I would give development in return. Peace is elusive in Taraba, but we have development. Here I am as a governor with a crown, but without a sword.

“You call police and security agencies for help, they will tell you they need to clear from Abuja before acting. Before you know it, you have lost 100 people.

“When you call for help, the help takes ages to come. We need to restructure the security architecture of this country. You take one step forward as the governor, the almighty Federal Government takes you back 10 miles.

“The police we have can’t help themselves. In 10 days’ time, we will be attacked. Helicopters dropped arms here at night for hoodlums.

Politics / Obasanjo Finally Reveals Why He Wrote 'controversial' Letter To Buhari by LadyNaija(f): 8:08pm On Feb 01, 2018
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that his recent open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari was not borne out malice or ‘bad belle’ but out of his deep concern for the situation in the country. Punch reports that he said this on Thursday, February 1, at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oke Ilewo area of Abeokuta, shortly after the Coalition for Nigeria Movement was inaugurated in Ogun state, and he was registered as a member of the movement, after formally filling the registration form. Obasanjo’s registration came almost 24 hours after the CNM was inaugurated in Abuja. Obasanjo arrived the venue at exactly 12.44pm in company with former governors of Cross River and Osun states, Donald Duke and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola respectively, among others. The former president while addressing scores of potential members who had gathered at the venue, said he was surprised that many Nigerians were worried that he had exchange pleasantries with President Buhari at the African Unity summit at Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, few days after he wrote the open letter to him (Buhari). He noted that he never condemned the Buhari-led administration in totality, as he explained he gave him commendation in areas where it had performed well. Obasanjo, however, spoke in parable, hinting that big masquerades have taken the centre stage, and the small masquerades must quit the stage. He said: “Last week, I issued a statement which I did not do lightly or frivolously but out of deep concern for the situation of our country. “I wonder why some Nigerians were worried why I had to pay respect to the Nigerian President at Addis Ababa. That’s my own upbringing as a well-born and bred Yoruba boy. “That doesn’t mean that what I have said about the President, which I did not say out of bitterness and hatred. It is evident that the President has performed in some areas, good enough. "In other areas not good and a proper advice which he may take and he may not take. “I didn’t do that out of malice or out of ‘bad belle’; I did it out of my respect for that office and my interest and I hope in your interest and the interest of Buhari in Nigeria.”
