Saudi Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr 'sentenced to death'

Activists and relatives say Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr supported only peaceful protests and eschewed violence

A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced the Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr to death, his family says.

Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr's brother said he was found guilty of seeking "foreign meddling" in the kingdom, "disobeying" its rulers and taking up arms against the security forces.

The cleric was a vocal supporter of the mass anti-government protests that erupted in Eastern Province in 2011.

His arrest two years ago, during which he was shot, triggered days of unrest.

Oil-rich Eastern Province is home to a Shia majority that has long complained of marginalisation at the hands of the Sunni royal family.

Protests began there in February 2011 after the start of the pro-democracy uprising in neighbouring Bahrain, which has a Shia majority and a Sunni royal family.

The Saudi authorities deny discriminating against Shia and blame Iran for stirring up discontent.

'Dangerous precedent'
Sheikh Nimr's brother Mohammed said on Twitter that he had been sentenced to death by Riyadh's Specialised Criminal Court, which tries terrorism cases, on Wednesday morning.

A statement by the cleric's family described the verdict as "discretionary", saying the judge had the option of imposing a lighter sentence, according to the Associated Press. It also warned that the trial had been "political" and had set a "dangerous precedent for decades to come".

When Sheikh Nimr, who holds the rank of ayatollah, went on trial in March 2013 prosecutors called for his execution by "crucifixion", a punishment which in Saudi Arabia involves beheading followed by public display of the decapitated body.

Human rights groups expressed concern at the time that he would not receive a fair trial. They also said he had still not been given access to adequate medical care for the gunshot wounds he received during his arrest in July 2012, something denied by the authorities.

Police shot Sheikh Nimr in the leg four times in disputed circumstances as they detained him after a car chase in Eastern Province's Qatif district.

Officials said he rammed a security forces vehicle, leading to a gun battle. However, his family disputed the allegation that he resisted arrest and insisted that he did not own a weapon.

The cleric was held for eight months before being charged and reportedly spent the first four in an isolation cell at a prison hospital in Riyadh.

Activists and relatives say Sheikh Nimr, who has a wide following among Shia in Eastern Province and other states, supported only peaceful protests and eschewed all violent opposition to the government.

In 2011, he told the BBC that he supported "the roar of the word against authorities rather than weapons... the weapon of the word is stronger than bullets, because authorities will profit from a battle of weapons".

His arrest prompted days of protests in which three people were killed.

Human Rights Watch said more than 1,040 people had been arrested at Shia protests between February 2011 and August 2014. At least 240 are still believed to be in detention.

"I think the message that Saudis are saying is: 'We will arrest anybody. We don't care how high profile they are... nobody is above this. We don't have any tolerance. We don't have any flexibility,'" HRW Middle East researcher Adam Coogle told AP after Sheikh Nimr's sentencing.

Saudi Arabia faces outcry over death sentence for Shia faith leader

Nimr Baqir al-Nimr’s conviction for sedition adding to unrest and promoting sectarian hatred, says Human Rights Watch

Saudi Arabia is facing an international outcry and accusations of promoting sectarian hatred after a Shia Muslim religious leader from the country’s volatile eastern province was sentenced to death.

Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, who led protests in Qatif at the height of the Arab spring in 2011, was convicted on Wednesday of sedition and other charges in a case that has been followed closely by Shias in the kingdom and neighbouring Bahrain.

Shia Muslims make up 10%-15% of the population of Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia, which bills itself as playing a lead role in the fight against the jihadis of Islamic State (Isis) in Syria and Iraq. Riyadh has supported Sunni groups fighting to overthrow Bashar al-Assad but denies backing Isis.

State prosecutors had reportedly asked for Nimr to be crucified. The sentence is thought likely to be commuted on appeal.

Nimr was arrested in 2012 and ill-treated during his two-year detention, much of it spent in solitary confinement. He was denied surgery for bullet wounds suffered when he was arrested. He was charged with “disobeying the ruler”, “inciting sectarian strife”, and encouraging and leading demonstrations.

In Iran, Saudi Arabia’s chief regional rival and the political centre of the Shia world, the foreign ministry warned on Thursday that execution would have “dire consequences”. It called Nimr an ayatollah, giving him the second most senior clerical title in the Shia hierarchy. Iran, like Saudi Arabia, uses capital punishment.

In London the Foreign Office stated that it was aware of the sentencing, adding: “The UK opposes the death penalty as a matter of principle.”

The Saudi authorities have portrayed the cleric as an “instigator of discord and rioting”. But Nimr’s supporters and family have denied that he incited violence.

In a BBC interview, Nimr said he backed “the roar of the word against authorities rather than weapons”. The arrest of his brother and other relatives after sentencing has fuelled anger that is being ventilated on Twitter and other social media.

“Saudi Arabia’s harsh treatment of a prominent Shia cleric is only adding to existing sectarian discord and unrest,” said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “Saudi Arabia’s path to stability in the eastern province lies in ending systematic discrimination against Shia citizens, not in death sentences.”

Amnesty International described Nimr’s sentencing as part of a wider Saudi government crackdown on dissent.

Shia and Sunni groups said they were extremely alarmed by the sentence. “Ayatollah al-Nimr is a respected Muslim figure in Saudi Arabia,” 10 organisations said in statement. “He is a faith leader, reformist and human rights activist, who has campaigned for an end to discriminatory laws against the Shia minority. The sentencing will further inflame sectarian tensions and provide encouragement to extremist groups such as Isis to continue their persecution of religious minorities.”

Toby Matthiessen, a Cambridge expert on Saudi Arabia, said: “In the last two years Nimr has become known by Shia across the world. For many Salafis and Sunnis with anti-Shia leanings he has become a real hate figure. In the context of Isis, with the Saudi royal family trying to legitimise itself in the eyes of Sunnis, being tough is probably a positive thing. Nimr was a revolutionary who called for non-violent protests and the downfall of the Al Saud, but also for Assad to go. He wasn’t sectarian.”

Yusif al-Khoei, of the London-based Al-Khoei Foundation, said he was “appalled” by the news and with others was considering boycotting a Saudi-organised conference on inter-religious dialogue in Vienna.

Watch the shia scholar reaction to towards the mid section of the video on simple question concerning mutah found in their book, if mutah was such a good thing, why would he act so angrily to what is supposedly sunnah?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR_2RvFbgkM

it is natural for the Shia scholar to feel offended with such a question, because the Sunni scholar was being scornful. there is no where in Islam or in Shia beliefs that mut'ah can be done with a married woman, talk less of doing it with the wife of an imam. whether mut'ah or permanent marriage, either cannot be done with a woman who is married. it would amount to adultery or prostitution.

it isn't a question of whether it is "good" or "bad", after all mut'ah is not an obligatory act. the Shia have come under criticism because based on Shia belief, as per the Holy Qur'an, it is forbidden to make "forbidden what Allah has permitted" (Surat Tahreem). while it is not a question of "good" or "bad", and it is not an obligatory act, mut'ah remains an Islamic institution that the Prophet (sa) himself established as per Quran 4:24 (known as the Verse of Mut'ah). therefore, whether you think it is "good" or "bad" is inconsequential to its permissibility. you have been given the choice of not practicing it, since its not obligatory. i do not know why you try your best to condemn something and bad-mouth it when even Sunnis agree that the practice was done and permissible in the time of the Prophet (sa), and only afterwards did the "Prophet (sa) discontinue its validity" or "later on forbade it". the Shia, as evidence point out in Sunni books, believe it was never the Prophet (sa) who "later forbade" it, but rather, it was Umar, the second Sunni caliph. however, it is bitter fact for Sunnis that their beloved caliph can disallow what the Prophet (sa) put in the place. if they can accept that on mut'ah, there are other practices too (like taraweeh) that Umar went contrary to the Prophet's ruling. he allowed things the Prophet (sa) forbade (like taraweeh), and disallowed what the Prophet (sa) had allowed before his death (like mut'ah). this speaks of a rebellious caliph, whom the Shia dislike by the way, and Sunnis do all the whitewashing for him.

this is the gist of all the arguments and fighting and derailing of the thread. its not worth it. also, anything can be abused or misused or violated, even permanent marriage. however, you dont condemn permanent marriage because men beat their wives for instance. we as Shia hold in principle that mut'ah is a sunnah and Islamic teaching as found in both the Holy Qur'an and the hadiths. and we also hold in principle that Misyar, no matter how well sugarcoated with all its flaws and abuses, is a bid'ah and was never part of Islam. it is bid'ah just like prostrating on a mat is also bid'ah, and it can be proven (from the words of one of the harshest Shia critics, Ibn Taymiyyah) that the Prophet (sa) always maintained prostration on earth, as the Shia continue to prostrate on turbah (molded earth). Misyar now ‘a widespread reality’

In this file photo, dozens of men are shown during a mass wedding sponsored by Al-Bir Charitable Society in Shuqaiq. At this time when marrying in the Kingdom has become too costly, mass weddings are seen as a logical way to avoid miser marriages. (SPA)

Misyar marriage has become a social reality and, as such, a solution to some problems and a cause of others, said a professor at King Saud University in Riyadh.

“Misyar is widespread because many need to keep their marriages a secret, either due to the objection of the first wife or other family pressures,” Ali Al-Bakr, faculty member at KSU, told a local daily.

Getting married in the Kingdom is no longer easy, according to one report, thanks to countless social and economic obstacles, including extortionate dowries, costly wedding extravaganzas and lack of housing.

In a misyar marriage the woman waives some of the rights she would enjoy in a normal marriage. Most misyar brides don’t change their residences but pursue marriage on a visitation basis. Some marriage officials say seven of 10 marriage contracts they conduct are misyar, and in some cases are asked to recommend prospective misyar partners.

Some people believe that these factors have led to the widespread practice of misyar, which has flexible conditions compared with traditional marriages, as a last resort. “It remains an option, albeit a temporary one, which is, nevertheless, seen as unfair to women in many cases,” said a national.

Saeed Al-Omari, a Saudi lawyer, said that such marriages have been legally recognized since conditions, including the presence of guardians and witnesses, are in place within their framework.

He said the Misyar practice is in line with Ministry of Justice regulations requiring the husband to sign contract documents that have to be ratified by local courts in accordance with Article 22 of the Saudi Marriage Act.

Despite there being consensus among a large segment of religious scholars about the legality of the Misyar model or marriage, not least because it stops youth from having illicit relations outside of wedlock, the practice is still considered taboo among many communities.
“The practice has been exploited by many, leading to negative stereotypes among several communities, which consider Misyar an insult to women,” he said.

For Al-Omar, this type of marriage could, nonetheless, reduce spinsterhood and protect divorcees and widows. It also comes to the rescue of youth, many of whom cannot afford either the short-term and long-term costs of regular marriages.

Religion / Kapparot: Jews Torture Chickens On The Eve Of Yom Kippur by LagosShia: 12:48pm On Oct 03, 2014
October 1, 2014 by Michael Stone

Jews abuse live chickens in the pre-Yom Kippur ritual of kapparot, a silly superstition that promises by swinging a live chicken around one’s head, one’s sins are magically transferred to that chicken.

A lawsuit has been filed in a New York state trial court seeking to enjoin Brooklyn Jewish residents from organizing, conducting or participating in the pre-Yom Kippur ritual involving chickens.

The yearly ritual of Kapparot (also spelled as Kaporos or Kaparot) is a religious ritual in which certain Jewish groups needlessly and cruelly abuse and sacrifice chickens for human sin in the days preceding Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.

Not all Jews use chickens in the ceremony. In fact, many use bags of coins or other non-animal symbols of atonement to fulfill the pre-Yom Kippur ritual.

Defenders of the medieval ritual claim attempts to prevent the use of live chickens in kapparot is “an attack on the First Amendment to the United States Constitution,” which prohibits interfering with the free exercise of religion.

However, animal rights activists and other rational citizens argue that animal cruelty laws and public health codes trump religious exemptions. The fact that Kapparot sites in New York are connected to a religious ritual does not exempt it from laws that are being broken by Kapparot practitioners.

Animal rights organizations report that the birds are mistreated, confined for hours and even days in small cages, frequently without food and water, and often left outside in the sun. Activists argue that while the slaughter itself may enjoy religious protection, the attendant animal cruelties, sanitation and health code violations do not.

In rare alliance, Shi'ites join Sunnis to defend Iraqi towns

By Raheem Salman and Yara Bayoumy

BAGHDAD Fri Oct 3, 2014 6:08am EDT

Reuters

(Reuters) - When Islamic State fighters tried to storm the Tigris River town of Dhuluiya north of Baghdad this week, they were repelled by a rare coalition of Sunni tribal fighters inside the town and Shi'ites in its sister city Balad on the opposite bank.

The assault, which began late on Tuesday ran into Thursday, was one of several major battles in recent days in which Sunni tribes joined pro-government forces against the militants, in what Baghdad and Washington hope is a sign of increasing cooperation across sectarian lines to save the country.

Further north, another powerful Sunni tribe fought alongside Kurdish forces to drive Islamic State fighters from Rabia, a town controlling one of the main border checkpoints used by fighters pouring in from Syria.

In western Iraq, Sunni tribes have fought alongside government troops in Hit, which was captured by Islamic State fighters on Thursday, and in Haditha, site of a strategic dam on the Euphrates.

Such local alliances are still rare: in most Sunni areas of Iraq, tribes have shown little sign of turning against militants as they did when they were recruited by U.S. troops in 2006-07. Many of the leaders of that Sunni "Awakening" movement were later arrested by Baghdad, in what Sunnis see as a betrayal.

Sectarian and ethnic animosity runs deep after a decade of civil war that has touched nearly every family, making it difficult for Sunnis, Shi'ites and Kurds to trust each other.

But nearly two months into a U.S.-led bombing campaign, this week's battles have provided the strongest early signs yet of what Washington and Baghdad hope could be a revival of the alliance with tribes to counter Islamic State.

"DEFENDING THEIR OWN FAMILIES"

Dhuluiya, which comes from the word "ribs", is a small town surrounded on three sides by a kink in the Tigris. A north-south highway runs through it, making it potentially one of the final stops for fighters attempting to assault Baghdad from the north.

When Islamic State fighters arrived in June, members of the al-Jubouri tribe refused their request to hand over 35 local police and security forces officers. Since then, there have been attacks and counter-attacks, while the Sunni tribesmen have been mostly besieged inside the town.

With no way out, they began receiving help from Balad, the mainly Shi'ite sister town on the opposite bank.

"We have no access now except using boats to go to Balad, the only place which helps us. The people of Balad have helped us with food, ammunition, weapons and receiving the wounded," said Abdullah Mohammed, a fighter from the Jubour tribe. "Some of them even fight with us."

The Dhuluiya municipality chief, Turki Khalaf Turki, said the cooperation could be a model for the country: "The starting point of unity in Iraq will be Dhuluiya, which wanted unity, while Islamic State wants sedition."

On Tuesday, the fighters launched what appeared to be a coordinated assault to capture the town once and for all. Insurgents flanked Dhuluiya from the eastern and northern sides, using mortars, RPG rounds, machine guns and hand grenades, Colonel Hussein al-Jubouri from Dhuluiya's police force said.

"We were able to stop them and our people have high morale because they are defending their town and families," he told Reuters on Wednesday, adding that the area was being targeted by mortars as they spoke. Nine residents and four fighters died.

Across the river, the insurgents also launched an attack on Balad near a Shi'ite shrine that would have allowed them to complete their siege of Dhuluiya. Abu Gyath, an influential Shi'ite sheikh, said fighters in Balad defended the territory to help the tribesmen across the river.

"If they control this area, God forbid, then Dhuluiya will be suffocated and it will be hard for us to send help. Otherwise, we pledged to help them as they are in a difficult situation," he said.

"FULL COOPERATION"

While such cooperation is rare, it is not unique.

In the north, members of the Shammar tribe helped Kurdish troops known as Peshmerga capture Rabia on Tuesday, the main border crossing between northern Iraq and Islamic State-held territory in eastern Syria.

Abdullah Yawar, a leading member of the tribe who long had an acrimonious relationship with Kurds, said he had been negotiating an alliance with Kurdish regional leader Massoud Barzani since Islamic State fighters swept into the north's biggest city Mosul in June.

Ahead of this week's Kurdish assault on Rabia, Yawar communicated with people inside the town to tell them that the forces coming to take it were "friendly".

"All of the Shammar are with the Peshmerga, and there is full cooperation between us," he told Reuters after the battle.

In Hit, a Euphrates River town west of Baghdad that fell to the militants on Thursday, the Sunni Albu Nimr tribe has reportedly clashed with the insurgents.

"When we saw Islamic State killing civilians, innocent people, destroying houses, they even took some of our men and we don't know their destiny till now," a member of the Albu Nimr tribe who declined to be named told Reuters.

"When we discovered their behavior and actions against Islamic teachings, we decided to stand against them, and we decided to fight any people standing against the army and the government."

In Haditha, a town by a strategic dam on the Euphrates further west, the Jaghaifi tribe has also allied with the security forces to thwart several attacks by Islamic State.

Ehsan al-Shimmeri, a political science professor at the University of Baghdad, said he saw an echo of the 2006-2007 "Awakening" movement.

"I think it represents a big transformation in fighting Islamic State at the level of Iraqi society," he said.

THIS MEANS WAR

In Dhuluiya, al-Jubouri tribal leaders initially hoped to avoid a clash with Islamic State when the fighters first stormed the town's outskirts in about 25 vehicles on June 14, four days after capturing Mosul.

The fighters told the townspeople their target was Baghdad and they did not plan to fight for control of Dhuluiya. A policeman recalled them announcing: "We just want to enter the town so that we can announce we've overrun it, put our flags on the buildings and leave."

Tribal leader Sheikh Mohammed Khamees was among a group of representatives of the town who met the fighters. Keen to avoid confrontation, Khamees initially agreed to let them enter.

But when the insurgents demanded the tribes hand over 35 security officers, "the tribe held a meeting, their demands were refused and we raised our weapons against them," Khamees told Reuters. "They said his means declaring war against us."

And so the battles began. On July 5, the militants launched a multi-pronged assault on the town, and exploded a wooden bridge that linked Balad to Dhuluiya. Police say more than 90 people have been killed and more than 400 wounded since June.

The decision by the town's Sunni tribesmen to hold out was praised in a sermon by a representative of Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, Iraq's top Shi'ite cleric, who called on the army to help them.

The alliance between Sunni Dhuluiya and Shi'ite Balad has required people in both towns to overcome sectarian animosity built up during a decade of war.

Abu Gyath, the Shi'ite sheikh in Balad who helped rally the town to the defense of Sunnis in Dhuluiya, said Sunni militants shot dead one of his sons in 2008 and another son was killed in a car bombing in 2011. But the arrival of Islamic State fighters persuaded him to overcome his animosity towards his Sunni neighbours to confront the bigger threat.

"Yes I wish to retaliate for the killings of my sons. But I feel sad now when I hear that the bombings (by Islamic State militants) have targeted any Sunni village," he told Reuters. "Although Balad was targeted a lot in the past, now Balad's people are helping Dhuluiya in this difficult time."

"Continuing this relationship is not easy, it needs time, and some people have to clean their hearts."

As long as shias exist in the very heartland of the so called wahabis, saudi arabia, in large number, then all u said above remains speculation and at best has little basis in reality. What again is a fatwa, a non binding legal opinion, like the disbelievers these fatwa to u serve as a basis to label entire group. Now talk of no shia or any other group has done suicide bombing in mosques etc, the 72 sunni muslims who died during a suicide bombing in mosque during jumah in Iraq will disagree, the numerous mosques assad has levelled in Syria refutes this denial, the numerous dead syrians in the hands of hezboshaytan, communist Iran and assad forces in Syria would disagree. The bottom line remain, if shia exist in large number in Saudi the very heartland of the so called wahabis, then either such fatwas served as no basis for murder nor does your claim of bloody takfirs. Let us apply our common sense and judge the issues right!

it is always the wish of Wahhabis/Salafists to drag the Shia into the mud, and make them their equal in criminality on the pages of newspapers. the Sunni mosque you are referring to was destroyed by ISIL. after the numerous attacks on Shia mosques and holy places in Iraq since 2003, if it wasn't for the wisdom, islamic principles and restraint of Shia scholars and the respect and authority they command from the majority Shia population of Iraq, no Sunni mosque would still be standing in Iraq. it is however evident that Wahhabis/Salafists do not only target Shias, Sufis and Christians, but also their fellow Sunnis who do not share their views, and who in fact oppose their ideology, just as the Sunni imam of the mosque you are mentioning opposed ISIL. it has always been the aim of the Wahhabis/Salafists to sow sectarian strife and killings between the Sunnis and Shias, and that is also the same goal of the Zionists, the masters of the Wahhabi kingdoms and terror groups.

as for assad, his troops are mostly nationalist and patriotic Sunnis, and they are the armed forces of the Syrian Arab Republic. terrorists dont hide in mosques and use them for launching attacks and keeping weapons, and then cry crocodile tears if the country's army level that mosque. and by the way, you are talking of empty mosques here, or mosques filled with terrorists and ammunition in the midst of an ongoing brutal civil war , not mosques filled with Sunni worshipers, or church filled with christian worshipers in times of peace that get bombed in sudden attacks by Wahhabi/Salafist terrorists. the difference is very clear. and i would kindly excuse myself after this post because the thread would degenerate, and i would kindly like to maintain respect and order. my challenge is for us to have examples of non-wahhabi muslims (be they shia, sufi or mainstream sunnis) bombing the places where others of different beliefs and views are busy worshiping. again, you wont find one instance.

as for you talking about the existence of the Shia in Saudi Arabia, i would leave you to watch the below by a Saudi Shia cleric-Ayatollah Nimr-who is currently in prison facing the death penalty for speaking his mind and exercising free speech-to tell you about what it means to be Shia in Wahhabi Saudi Arabia:

All allegations they have raised are also applicable to them as well as other muslims. Every muslim group does takfir.

yes, every Muslim group/sect and also non-Muslim ones do TAKFIR. that is every group believes the other is disbelieving or is a kafir and are not guaranteed salvation. in other words every group says its own teachings are what leads to salvation when/if followed. however, when Wahhabis/Salafists are tagged "takfiris" or accused of takfir, it is because their own takfir is a bloody takfir!

other than the Wahhabis/Salafists i have not heard of any Muslim group that goes into mosques/churches and randomly shoot or blow up people because they are not Wahhabis/Salafists, or the victims do not believe as them. it is not part of Islam that we Muslims should kill unbelievers, simply for the fact that they do not believe. we are only to fight/kill people who have transgressed against us and in fact declared war on us. if there is no factor of aggression involved, it is only wahhabis/salafists who kill randomly others for holding opposing views. this intolerance isn't part of Islam, or the religion with the holy book in which it is stated: "there is no compulsion in religion".

There is no Shia, Sufi, or a mainstream Sunni Muslim believer who have gone into mosques or churches to kill worshipers. all the church and mosque bombings are committed by the group that holds doctrines to support bloody takfir. otherwise, PLEASE PROVIDE ONE INSTANCE A SHIA, FULLY BACKED WITH FATWAS FROM ANY AYATOLLAH OR NOT, OR A MAINSTREAM NON-WAHHABI SUNNI, WHO HAVE GONE TO BLOW MOSQUES AND CHURCHES IN THE NAME OF GOD/ISLAM. I CHALLENGE ANYONE, YOU WILL NOT FIND ONE INSTANCE!!!

the verse that gave us right to fight (in self-defense) mentions the circumstances in which we are allowed to fight:

"Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah ." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might." (22:39-40)

Ibn Abdul-Wahab:

Zhulfiqar1:

A Tip of the Ice-Berg:

“Regarding the one that says: ‘I do not declare enmity towards the disbelievers (Musrikeen)' or who declares enmity towards them but did not perform Takfir on them, or the one who says: 'I do not have conflict with people of La Ilaha lallah even if they committed Kufr, Shirk and opposed the religion of Allah' or who says: 'I do not object to the shrines’ this is not a Muslim”! (Majmuatu’l-Tawhid, Risalat Bayyan al-Najat Wal Fikak)

Redefining the meaning of La ilaha illallah and declaring the blood and wealth to be halaal of those who do not accept the new definition (Kitaab ut-Tawhid, ch. 5, pp. 19-21 Eng.; 12-14 of the Arabic).

Ibn `Abdul Wahhaab's statement in Kitaab ut-Tawhid (Arabic version printed by Daar ul-Iftaa, pp. 48-49; the English version translated by Ismaa'il al-Faruqi, Ch. 33, pp. 72-76):

'the kuffar who know their kufr are better in guidance than the believers,'

It is reported that Ibn 'Umar narrated: The Prophet said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham and our Yemen." People said, "Our Najd as well." The Prophet again said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham and Yemen." They said again, "Our Najd as well." On that the Prophet said, "There will appear earthquakes and afflictions, and from there will come out the side of the head of Satan." (Sahihul Bukhari Vol. 2, B. 17, No. 147)

Note:Ibn Abdul Wahab, the founder of Wahhabism is from Najd.

Zhul-fiqar:

Sheikh Ibn Abdul-Wahab,the founder of wahhabism slaughtered the people of Ta'if (a city in present-day saudi arabia).his disciple,Ibn Saud slaughtered the people of Karbala (a holy city in Iraq).is there any difference between him and the ones presently carrying out these massacres?

you can look at these Sunni website exposing wahhabism(referred to as salafism outside saudi arabia),its founders and scholars :

Zhulfiqar1: an excerpt from:
http://www.sunnah.org/aqida/cape_town_wahabi/wahabi_menace_capetown.htm

"Undoubtedly, one of the worst abominations perpetrated by the Wahhabis under the leadership of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab was the massacre of the people of Taif. They killed everyone in sight, slaughtering child and adult, ruler and ruled, lowly and high-born. They began with a suckling child nursing at his mother’s breast and moved on to a group studying the Qur’an, slaying all of them, down to the last man. When they had wiped out the people in the houses, they went into the streets, the shops and the mosques, killing whoever happened to be there. They even killed people in prayer until they had annihilated every Muslim in Taif and until only some twenty or more people remained…

The Wahhabis cast books into the streets to be blown to and fro, including copies of the Qur’an, volumes of Bukhari, Muslim and other canonical collections of hadith, and books of fiqh, all amounting to thousands. Books remained in the streets for several days, trampled on by the Wahhabis. Not one among them made the slightest attempt to remove even one page of the Qur’an from under foot and preserve it from the ignominy and disrespect of this display. Then they destroyed the houses and made what was once a town into a barren wasteland. This happened in the Hijra Year, 1217 (Jamal Effendi
al-Sidqi al-Zahawi, Al-Fajr al-Sadiq).

Our own Shaykh Ahmad Behardien had to escape from Mecca in his pyjamas when the Wahhabis came into the city, and into Medinah, to slaughter the scholars. One of the teachers of Shaykh Muhammad Salih of the Azzawiyyah was
decapitated on Jabal-Qubais when the Wahhabis took over Mecca. Those in our community who stealthily preach the teachings of the Wahhabis have this kind of barbarism as their origins. And they have inherited on their hands the
blood of the Muslims slaughtered by these people. This is their heritage. Look at your hands, O heedless people (as my shaykh would say)! Look at the blood of the innocents on your hands next time you preach, and write to the local press. Come, look, and say you are not part of this barbarism! Come, you say we practice innovations! Come, show us that the slaughter of Muslims by Muslims is part of the Sunnah! If I were one of you, I would not want to show my face in public. I would be too ashamed. You have no shame! You come into our community under false pretences, and preach doctrines that
undermine our religious fabric. You have no integrity! The history of your madh-hab is written in blood. Come, say it is not so!

The slaughter of Muslims at the time of the Wahhabi takeover is the bloodiest chapter in the history of our religion. And what did the Wahhabis do in Mecca, the holiest place in the universe:

During the demonstration, arranged by the people of Makkah al-Mukarramah, to end the attacks directed towards their lives …two of the shells fired (by the Wahhabi forces) from the guns at Qalah al-Jiyad to the (Masjid al-Haram) landed (a few) metres from the sacred stone, the Hajr al-Aswad. The Sutrah al-Sharifah, the cover of the Ka’bah, caught fire from these shells, and the people, to extinguish (the fire), had to open the door and climb on the Ka’bah. Although the (Wahhabi) soldiers saw the fire, they kept Maqam Ibrahim and the Haram Sharif under cannon fire and martyred a number of Muslims. Thepeople could not enter the masjid, and salah could not be performed in the Holy Masjid for days (From a letter written to the Muslim world by the Amir of Mecca in 1916). This was other than the slaughter of the scholars".

Ibn Taymiyyah's Fatwas:

First Ibn Taimiyah’s Fatwa - Those that reject Allah (swt)’s sitting on a throne should be executed

Ibn Taimiyah cascades the following teachings in his esteemed book Majmo’a al-Fatawa, Volume 5, page 391:
"Imam Aba Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Khuzaima said: ‘Whoever does not admit that Allah is sitting on a throne above the seventh sky, is a Kafir and his blood must be shed. He must be made to repent. Otherwise his neck must be struck and thrown into the garbage.’'

Second Ibn Taimiyah Fatwa - Those that reject that Allah (swt) will be seen in the next world should be executed

We read in Majmo’a al-Fatawa, Volume 6 page 500:
"Aba Abdillah said: ‘Whoever claims that Allah cannot be seen (by eye sight) in the hereafter, is a Kafir and has rejected Quran and replied Allah (sw). He must be made to repent. Otherwise he should be killed".

Third Ibn Taimiyah Fatwa - Those that recite Niya loudly during Salat should be executed

Majmo’a al-Fatawa, Volume 22 page 236:
"To recite the intention (niya) loudly is not permissible according to the Muslim scholars, nor did the Prophet (s), Caliphs or Sahaba, Salaf or Imams perform it. Whoever claims it is Wajib, he must be taught the law and then to repent from that opinion. If he insists on it then he must be killed".

Fourth Ibn Taimiyah Fatwa – You can kill or enslave your opponents

We read in Al-Seyasa al-Shari'a by ibn Taimiyah, page 159:
"Therefore the "Shari'a" ("divine law" ) made the killing of the disbelievers obligatory, but didn’t make obligatory the killing of those who are captured during fights or other than fights such as falling from a ship or getting lost or kidnapped. Thus, the imam decided that the best option is to be killed or enslaved".

Fifth Ibn Taimiyah Fatwa – Those that don’t believe that Allah (swt) physically spoke to Musa (as) and Jibril (as) should be executed

Majmo’a al-Fatawa, Volume 12 page 502:
Sheikh al-Islam, may Allah's mercy be upon him was asked:
"A man says that Allah didn’t talk to Musa by Himself but He created a voice from the tree’s side and Musa (as) heard from the tree not from Allah and also Allah didn’t talk to Gabriel by the Quran, but he (Gabriel) took it from the Guarded Tablet. Is he right or not?

He answered:
Praise to Allah, he is not right, nay, he is misguided and a liar according to the agreement of Salaf and the Imams. Nay he is a Kafir and must repent or otherwise be killed".

Sixth Ibn Taimiyah Fatwa – Those that believe that a traveler can perform the complete Salat should be executed

Majmo’a al-Fatawa, Volume 22 page 31:
"Who ever said that the traveler has to pray four raka, hence he is as the one who say that the traveler has to fast in Ramadhan, both of these (opinions) are misguidance, and contrary to the ijma of Muslims, the one who say it must to repent, if he doesn’t he must be killed".

Seventh Ibn Taimiyah Fatwa – Those that believe that Qur’an is created should be executed

"Nay it is known from the Salaf Imams that Takfir be issued against anyone that says that Quran is created he must repent or otherwise be killed".

Eighth Ibn Taimiyah Fatwa – Those that believe in adherence to a particular Imam should be executed

“Anyone who believes that the people have to follow one particular Imam amongst those Imams not the others, must made to repent otherwise be killed”

Nineth Ibn Taimiyah actually killed those who disagreed with him

"We read in Al-Uqood al-Duria by Ibn Abdulhadi al-Maqdisi, Volume 1 page 197:
Sheikh Taqi al-Deen may Allah be pleased with him marched to Kerwanin in the beginning of Dulhujja in year 704 H and in his company was the prince Qaraqush.

Prince Jamal al-Deen al-Afram the deputy of the kingdom marched with the rest of soldiers of Damascus in the month of Muharam, in the year 705 H to invade them and exterminate them, and before he marched, there were some troops which had marched before him.

Thursday in 17th of Dulhujja, the deputy and soldiers arrived at Damascus after Allah granted them victory over the error party of Rafidah, Nusairia and those who held false beliefs. And Allah exterminated them from that lands, praise to Allah the Lord of worlds".

And say: The truth is from your Lord, so let him who please believe, and let him who please disbelieve (Holy Quran 18:29)

There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; (Holy Quran 2:256)

Contrary to this, ibn Taimiyah authored a single volume book "al-Sarem al-Maslool" comprising of 438 pages wherein he used:

-The word (kill) 978 times

-The word 'kafir' 56 times

-The word 'tourture' 48 times

-The word 'murtad' (apostate) 34 times

-The words 'his blood must be shed' 14 times

-The word 'behead' 8 times

-The word 'war' 7 times

usermane: Good job, tit. There is no difference between the establishment of the saudi state and ISIS. The founders of the Saudi states who are revered as noble scholars and pious muslims today are as guilty as the scholars and militants of ISIS.
Salafism or Wahabism is an off shoot of sunni sect. The ideology of this group has to be defeated from within Islam. But that is not given concern. Military action which has often been sought against ideology is often counterproductive.

When Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhab began his call, he won the heart of many muslims. Many of them were convinced that he was preaching the true but forgotten Islam and thus they joined his cause. Unfortunately, the opposers couldn't find any response to his theological challenges and thus proving themselves weak. So even after the Salafis were militarily defeated and the first saudi state was crushed by the Ottomans, the Salafis will return larger and stronger to establish the second and later on the third/current Saudi state because their ideology was never intellectually confronted, refuted or debunked.
I

brother, i think you are assuming things here.

Ibn Abdul Wahab did not appeal to any heart and minds of the Muslims at large. his own father and brother disowned him. his brother even authored a book to counter his ideas which were seen as innovations and extreme. Ibn Abdul-Wahab was the "scholar of the monarch". Al-Saud found in him a willing hand to issue fatwas to legitimize their rule.it was brute force through the sword that al-saud established their rule in the arabian peninsula. ever since then, the descendants of al-saud held political power, and the descendants of Ibn Abdul-Wahab held religious authority. how many people know that mufti of saudi arabia is a descendant of ibn abdul wahab?

secondly, it was the wahhabis allied with the british that brought an end to the ottoman empire and the sunni caliphate. read about Lawrence of Arabia!

arsenalwenger: For God sake, when will muslim stop killing and fighting for alllah? It is quite shocking to read that the prophet beheaded Christians and Jews who opposed him that even young muslims never see anything wrong.

Where is the conscience in the heart of muslims? Does the sunnah of the prophet sealed all conscience who seem to follow it?

where did you read that the Prophet (sa) beheaded anyone? please get your facts straight.
Islam for Muslims / Re: Wahhabism, Jihad And Boko Haram by LagosShia: 4:40pm On Sep 26, 2014
maclatunji: Like Taymiyyah before him, Abd al-Wahhab believed that the period of the Prophet Muhammad's stay in Medina was the ideal of Muslim society (the "best of times", to which all Muslims should aspire to emulate (this, essentially, is Salafism).
You can call this any name you like, but it is the truth.

may Allah guide us!

it is one thing to believe that the time the Prophet (sa) spent in Medina is the ideal for Muslims to emulate, and it is another thing entirely on re-enacting the days of the Prophet (sa) and applying those lofty prophetic standards.

the problem with Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Abdul-Wahab, and their Wahhabism/Salafism, is not their claim to be "puritanical" or "salafist" in principle. the problem with them is that they have practiced and propagated everything that was not part of that "ideal period" the Prophet (sa) spent in Medina.

read about the history of Ibn Taymiyyah and his war crimes committed against other religious communities in Syria and Lebanon, in particular Shia Muslims, Christians and Alawites. read about Ibn Abdul-Wahab and Ibn Saud and their ransacking of Karbala and Najaf, and the crimes against humanity committed on the inhabitants of the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf. you cannot claim that your belief is fighting anyone who isn't your own version of "Muslim" and in fact going on killing sprees, and then think others can't inflict the same on you if not for their higher Islamic standards. what merit then is the Muslim cries for the people of Palestine who regularly come under the Zionist Israeli monster? what sort of world would you claim Islam came to establish, if your doctrine is based on killing and destruction?

it is a shame for anyone to try, out of ignorance of course, to vindicate the crimes Wahhabis/Salafists have committed by saying they are trying to live like the Prophet (sa) lived in Medina. how many Christians, Jews, or even pagans (idol worshipers) did the Prophet (sa) BEHEAD in Medina? does the Prophet (sa) used to train children on beheading adults, as have seen on videos children in syria are trained to do by ISIL? all the battles the Prophet (sa) fought were initiated by the opposing camp. it is never part of Islam to kill the "unbelievers". whatever "unbelievers" are narrated on in the Holy Quran and how the Prophet (sa) fought them, those unbelievers were the aggressors and the initiators of aggression. the Prophet (sa) never fought that he may eliminate opposing religious views or forcefully convert others. it was not a drive for dominance or oppression by the Prophet (sa).

those heads that ISIL, Boko Haram and other Wahhabi/Salafist groups have beheaded will remind every sane, true and sincere Muslim of the heads of the Prophet's family, and in particular the Prophet's beloved grandson-Imam Hussain (as)-, that were chopped off in Karbala by the Ummayyads- the predecessors of the Wahhabis/Salafists, and the successors of the idolaters of Quraysh in the days of the Arabian Jahiliyyah.

so please, wishing to live like in the days of the Prophet (sa) and claiming that is one thing. and applying those prophetic standards is another thing. the Prophet Muhammad (sa) was not an ISIL, Boko Haram or any Wahhabi/Salafist terrorist. he was the messenger of Allah, who was sent as MERCY unto to humanity. that is what we are informed of him in the Holy Quran. it is a disservice to Islam to take charlatans serious and try to justify their atrocities by linking them to the days of the Prophet (sa).

Zaria Quds Day Massacre: Sheikh Zakzaky addresses UN Human Right Commission

Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky has on Thursday (18/09/2014) addressed a session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission over the Zaria Quds Day killings carried out by the Nigerian military on July 25, 2014.

Facilitated by the fact-finding team of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, the presentation was made live on internet via skype through direct link with the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Sheikh Zakzaky and another key eye-witness were denied visa to personally attend the special session.

The panel brought together members of the fact-finding team and key eye-witnesses, among them was Sheikh Zakzaky, who lost three of his sons in the massacre, and Dr. Musa Shuaibu, a doctor in Zaria who treated many of the victims of the army's attacks.

It would be recalled that the fact-finding team of the Islamic Human Rights Commission had visited Nigeria and compiled a report which documented the facts behind last July's killings.

The panel centered the discussion on ‘the Zaria Massacres and the Role of the Military' and heard from the two key witnesses, who backed their presentations with clear empirical evidences.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission was expected to present the documented report of the massacre to the UN fact-finding mission same day after the session.

Islam for Muslims / UK Christian Archbishop Doubts God's Existence Amidst Growth of Islam in the UK by LagosShia: 7:08pm On Sep 18, 2014
Doubting Thomas: UK Archbishop unsure of God’s existence

Published time: September 18, 2014 16:26

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby (Reuters / Luke MacGregor)

Britain’s’ most senior clergyman has said that thinking about global injustices has made him question the existence of God.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby admitted in front of a small public audience in Bristol that he ‘frequently asked’ whether God truly existed, and if “he should be doing something” about difficult situations.

Asked whether he ever doubted his belief by a BBC reporter, the Archbishop said that he did question Christianity at times.

"Yes. I do. In lots of different ways really. It's a very good question. That means I've got to think about what I'm going to say. Yes I do," he said.

He cited that his soul searching came during his runs around Lambeth Palace, where the Archbishop and his staff are based.

Welby, who represents more than 80 million Anglican Christians, told the audience that he sometimes asked God “...isn’t it about time you did something, if you’re there?”

The archbishop, however, brushed off any ideas that he may be giving up his faith in the future.

While he said that Christians would be unable to explain the problem of suffering, he affirmed the idea that God was present in both good and bad times.

It is not about feelings, it is about the fact that God is faithful and the extraordinary thing about being a Christian is that God is faithful when we are not,” he told the audience.

When asked what he does when life gets challenging, he told the audience: "I keep going and call to Jesus to help me, and he picks me up."

Welby is the first archbishop to openly admit his questioning of the divine, in stark contrast with other religious figureheads in the Christian community.

The comments also come at a time when Christianity is declining at a rapid rate. According to the UK’s last census poll in 2011, the number of people identifying themselves as Christian fell by 4.1 million people – a decline of over 10 percent.

In contrast, the UK is experiencing a huge drive in the number of people identifying themselves as Muslim, particularly amongst young people. According to the census, around one in ten people identified themselves with the Islamic faith.

Islam for Muslims / Re: The Quoran Say's That Israel Belongs To The Jews. True Or False? by LagosShia: 10:21pm On Sep 12, 2014
first of all, the Qur'an doesn't recognize Jews as a religious group. the Quran in other words doesn't recognie Judaism as a religion.

the Holy Qur'an reads:

"religion to Allah is Islam"..."and whoever seeks a religion other than Islam shall be amongst the losers".

secondly, lands belong to people and not to religions. it is people that choose what religion to follow. the land was given to the "children of israel" to worship Allah (swt). we read also in the Holy Quran: "Abraham was neither a Jew, Christian or Pagan, but was a monotheist, a Muslim". so the religion of the children of Israel was Islam (submission to the will of Allah). or from a neutral, non-Muslim view, they did not have an institutionalized religion back then. Judaism was a later invention to identify with the set of beliefs and practices that the people who lived in Judea lived by. like i have mentioned, lands belong to people, not to religions. imagine voodoo worshipers in haiti returning to Nigeria and asking Nigerians who identify themselves as Christians and Muslims today to leave because Nigeria was once a land for traditional religion!

thirdly, who says the Palestinians do not have israelite decent? there are Palestinians with Israelite lineage/decent/heritage. through conquests and invasions of Palestine, the people overwhelmingly convert to Islam and became an arabic speaking people through assimilation/arabicization, and through intermarriage. being that the arabian conquest was the last and left the most impact through the policy of embracing local populations (assimilation), the people of palestine ended up being arabic speaking.

and by the way, whatever arguments, religious, historical or ethnic, it makes no sense for a man thousands of miles away to come to your land and claim it because he believes God gave it to him, or that his ancestors once lived there, and therefore he would go on to snatch your house, bulldoze it, and destroy your life because he's powerful. if that is right and just, then the earth would be a living hell. many of our ancestors could have been from somewhere 2000 years ago. do we go about driving people and taking over their houses and destroying their lives? what sort of judeo-christian God is this? isn't this theft and terror that Zionists (be they Christians or Jews) promote in God's name? imagine if it were Muslims claiming a land because their ancestors lived there 2000 years ago. in fact, on that ground, Muslims can easily claim over Spain because it was once a Muslims land with a majority Muslim population.

furthermore, the history of Palestine did not even start with Abraham from whom both Israelis and Palestinians claim descent. before Abraham, there were people in Palestine. what happened to them? the israelites fought them and took over the land and committed genocide against them. read the old testament. and it is the blessing of tolerance and co-existence that have resulted into the palestinian people. they are descendants from many nations and religions, including those tribes that pre-existed Abraham. that land doesn't belong to one people or one religion. therefore nothing as an apartheid, racist Jewish state should be there. the people of palestine-Jews, Muslims and Christians, and both the hebrew and arabic speaking ones- should all live as one in a unified palestine for all.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Attack On Prophet Mohamed's (sa) Tomb Could Stir Up Sectarian Hatred by LagosShia: 9:04pm On Sep 02, 2014
tbaba1234: The recent bogus article in 'The Independant' regarding the alleged plan to move the blessed grave of the Prophet (SAW) is another sad indication of how sensationalist media can be.
Firstly, this particular newspaper, and especially the journalist Mr. Jerome Taylor, seems to have an unnatural obsession for smearing the Saudis and their relationship with the Holy Sites. See this brief history:
2011- http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/mecca-for-the-rich-islams-holiest-site-turning-into-vegas-2360114.html -
2012- http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/medina-saudis-take-a-bulldozer-to-islams-history-8228795.html
2013- http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/the-photos-saudi-arabia-doesnt-want-seen--and-proof-islams-most-holy-relics-are-being-demolished-in-mecca-8536968.html
2014- http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/saudis-risk-new-muslim-division-with-proposal-to-move-mohameds-tomb-9705120.html
Secondly, the alleged 'plan' turns out to be an academic paper submitted to a government committee. Anyone who is aware of the nature of these things realizes that the submission of a paper is in no way, fashion, or form approval of an actual plan by that committee!
Thirdly, the paper itself does not actually state that the blessed grave should be touched. No sane Muslim would ever suggest that. Rather, what it suggests is that the masjid itself should be replanned in the new construction so that the blessed grave would be outside of the new masjid boundaries. So, what the author suggested was to change the boundary of the masjid, not that of the grave.
Fourthly, this view is a minority view and has been soundly rejected by mainstream Salafi and all non-Salafi scholars. Historically, there has never been any serious opposition to the Umayyad inclusion of the blessed grave into the Prophet's masjid (which occurred in 88 AH), and no major scholar of any madhhab has ever called for the Prophet's (SAW) masjid boundaries to be redrawn.
Lastly, this is NOT a defence of Saudi construction policy around the two Harams: that topic requires an entire article, not just a FB post! There is much to criticize, and yes much to praise as well.
The purpose of this post was merely to point out how sensationalist the media continues to be, and how easily Muslims seem to *want* to demonize another group. And help is sought from Allah alone!
-Sheikh Yasir Qadir

let us put the independent newspaper and their views about the saudis aside. let us also put our sentiments aside and look at the reports, and also look at their history.

the links you presented right from 2011 are true reports. however, if i may recall correctly, you even defended the demolitions of historical/islamic heritage sites in Makkah under the guise of "expansion". so really, the independent however biased you feel they are towards the saudis only reported what the saudis did.

as for this report about the Prophet's (sa) tomb, they (the saudis) have not yet done it, but they are well capable of doing it. and it is good the independent is sounding the alarm before such a heinous act is carried out. such a report is believable going by the history of the saudi wahhabis. their founders along with the founder of the wahhabi school of thought ransacked Karbala in the 19th century, and the tomb of the Prophet's grandson, Imam Hussain (as), was destroyed and the treasures of the shrine stolen and many innocent Shias lost their lives. again, when al-saud rose to power in the hijaz and formed saudi arabia with wahhabi religious backing, they destroyed Jannatul Baqee in Madina and destroyed Jannatul-Mualla in Makkah. all the tombs of the Prophet's Ahlul-Bayt (as) and sahaba were destroyed, flattened, and even defaced to the extent that no one would know whose grave is where in both Baqee and Mualla. these personalities are our heritage, and visiting them revives their memories and keeps Islam in the days of the Prophet (sa) alive in this our modern age. we can't just relate based on stories we read in books. however, the wahhabi interpretation is drastic and too far by calling ziyarat "shirq" (idolatry), and thereby declaring other muslims as "idolaters".

of recent, wahhabis/salafist groups have destroyed the tombs of sahabas in syria, and Prophet Yunus (Job) in Iraq. in timbuktu, wahhabi/salafist groups did the same with Sufi shrines. these Sufi Islamic heritage sites are as old as Islam on the continent. the threat posed by wahhabi/salafist terrorist groups linked to alqaeda to the shrine of Sayyida Zainab (as)-granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad (sa)- in syria prompted the Lebanese Shia Islamic resistance movement, Hezbollah, to militarily intervene in the Syrian conflict to protect the shrine and also back the government of the syrian president bashar al assad.

One of Islam’s most revered holy sites – the tomb of the Prophet Mohamed – could be destroyed and his body removed to an anonymous grave under plans which threaten to spark discord across the Muslim world.

The controversial proposals are part of a consultation document by a leading Saudi academic which has been circulated among the supervisors of al-Masjid al-Nabawi mosque in Medina, where the remains of the Prophet are housed under the Green Dome, visited by millions of pilgrims and venerated as Islam’s second-holiest site. The formal custodian of the mosque is Saudi Arabia’s ageing monarch King Abdullah.

The plans, brought to light by another Saudi academic who has exposed and criticised the destruction of holy places and artefacts in Mecca – the holiest site in the Muslim world – call for the destruction of chambers around the Prophet’s grave which are particularly venerated by Shia Muslims.

The 61-page document also calls for the removal of Mohamed’s remains to the nearby al-Baqi cemetery, where they would be interred anonymously.

There is no suggestion that any decision has been taken to act upon the plans. The Saudi government has in the past insisted that it treats any changes to Islam’s holiest sites with “the utmost seriousness”.

But such is the importance of the mosque to both Sunni and Shia Muslims that Dr Irfan al-Alawi warned that any attempt to carry out the work could spark unrest. It also runs the risk of inflaming sectarian tensions between the two branches of Islam, already running perilously high due to the conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

Hardline Saudi clerics have long preached that the country’s strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam – an offshoot of the Sunni tradition – prohibits the worship of any object or “saint”, a practice considered “shirq” or idolatrous.

Dr Alawi, director of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation, told The Independent: “People visit the chambers, which are the rooms where the Prophet’s family lived, and turn towards the burial chamber to pray.

“Now they want to prevent pilgrims from attending and venerating the tomb because they believe this is shirq, or idolatry. But the only way they can stop people visiting the Prophet is to get him out and into the cemetery.”

For centuries Muslim pilgrims have made their way to Mecca in order to visit the Kaaba – a black granite cubed building said to be built by Abraham, around which al-Masjid al-Haram, or the Grand Mosque, is built, and towards which every Muslim faces when they pray.

This pilgrimage, or hajj, is a religious duty that has to be carried out at least once in a lifetime.

Many go on to make their way to the nearby city of Medina to pay their respects at the Prophet’s tomb.

Al-Nabawi mosque around the tomb has been expanded by generations of Arabian rulers, particularly the Ottomans. It includes hand-painted calligraphy documenting details of the Prophet’s life and his family. Dr Alawi said the plans also call for these to be destroyed as well as the Green Dome which covers the Prophet’s tomb.

The Prophet is venerated by both branches of Islam, Sunni and Shia. The strict Wahhabi sect is a branch of the Sunni faith, however, and removing the Prophet could further inflame tensions between the two groups .

The current crisis in Iraq has been blamed on the Shia former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s sectarianism, which alienated the Sunni, leading to the uprising. Isis, also known as Islamic State, which holds swathes of Iraq and Syria, and which murdered the American journalist James Foley, is a Sunni organisation.

Mainstream Sunni Muslims would be just as aghast at any desecration of the tomb as the Shia, Dr Alawi said.

The Independent has previously revealed how the multibillion-pound expansion of the Grand Mosque has, according to the Washington-based Gulf Institute, led to the destruction of up to 95 per cent of Mecca’s millennium-old buildings. They have been replaced with luxury hotels, apartments and shopping malls.

King Abdullah has appointed the prominent Wahhabi cleric and imam of the Grand Mosque, Abdul Rahman al-Sudais, to oversee the expansion project – necessary to cope with the huge number of pilgrims who now visit each year.

Dr Alawi says the consultation document for the al-Nabawi mosque in Medina, by the leading Saudi academic Dr Ali bin Abdulaziz al-Shabal of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, has been circulated to the Committee of the Presidency of the Two Mosques.

Several pages of the consultation document have just been published in the presidency’s journal. They call for the destruction of the rooms surrounding the tomb – used by the Prophet’s wives and daughters, and venerated by the Shia because of their association with his youngest daughter, Fatima.

The document also calls for the Green Dome, which covers the tomb and these living quarters, to be removed, and the ultimate removal of the Prophet’s body to a nearby cemetery.

The al-Baqi cemetery already contains the bodies of many of the Prophet’s family, including his father who was removed there in the 1970s, Dr Alawi said. In 1924 all the grave markers were removed, so pilgrims would not know who was buried there, and so be unable to pray to them.

“The Prophet would be anonymous,” Dr Alawi added. “Everything around the Prophet’s mosque has already been destroyed. It is surrounded by bulldozers. Once they’ve removed everything they can move towards the mosque. The imam is likely to say there is a need to expand the mosque and do it that way, while the world’s eyes are on Iraq and Syria. The Prophet Mohamed’s grave is venerated by the mainstream Sunni, who would never do it. It is just as important for the Shia too, who venerate the Prophet’s daughter, Fatima.

“I’m sure there will be shock across the Muslim world at these revelations. It will cause outrage.”

The Independent was unable to contact the Saudi Arabian embassy, but it said in a statement last year: “The development of the Holy Mosque of Makkah al-Mukarramah [Mecca] is an extremely important subject and one which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in its capacity as custodian of the two holy mosques, takes with the utmost seriousness. This role is at the heart of the principles upon which Saudi Arabia is founded.”

Islam for Muslims / Attack On Prophet Mohamed's (sa) Tomb Could Stir Up Sectarian Hatred by LagosShia: 3:42pm On Sep 02, 2014

Attack on Mohamed's tomb could stir up sectarian hatred

From the earliest period of Islam, it has been a common practice to pay respects to the Prophet Mohamed and visit his tomb.

Muslims refer to Mecca and Medina as “the two sanctuaries”, and many combine their hajj pilgrimage to Mecca with a visit to the Prophet’s mosque in Medina. There, alongside the prayer area and the Prophet’s pulpit, is the chamber housing his final resting place – where he was buried in 632.

It has also long been controversial, however, due to Islam’s rejection of idolatry, rooted in the firm monotheism laid out in the Koran. Do the prayers performed at the tomb amount to the worship of the Prophet? If so, then they contravene the fundamental Islamic message that God alone is worthy of worship.

Visiting the Prophet’s tomb was clearly popular in the first centuries of Islam, and a building erected over the tomb was first reported in the seventh century, soon after the Prophet’s death. Nevertheless, there has remained a worry among some scholars that the rituals at the Prophet’s tomb were suspect at the very least, and potentially dangerous heresy.

A small but vocal opposition to visiting the tomb existed through the centuries among Sunni scholars, but this became a major political issue only with the rise of the puritanical reform movement known as Wahhabism. Named after its 18th-century founder, Ibn Abd al-Wahhab, Wahhabism viewed any elaborate buildings over grave sites as an invitation to idolatry. To its followers, the prayers uttered at these tombs were a denial of God’s absolute omnipotence.

The 19th and 20th centuries witnessed the Wahhabis, in alliance with the House of Saud, leading the destruction of the tombs of notable Muslim figures.

The great Saudi financial resources have enabled the spread of Wahhabi doctrine beyond the Arabian peninsula in the past 50 years. But while the Wahhabis themselves are virulently Sunni, opposition has come from both Sunnis and Shia. Visiting the Prophet’s tomb has proven so popular among both Sunnis and Shias that it has thwarted all past Wahhabi attempts to end the practice and demolish the tomb. The Saudi royal family prizes its role as guardians of two sanctuaries, believing it gives them a position of religious leadership and responsibility throughout the Muslim world. Destroying the tomb would, in the past, certainly have led many to question their leadership.

Perhaps, as part of the complex power relations within the kingdom, the Saudi authorities see a political opportunity: the destruction of the tomb, or stricter controls on the activities of the pilgrims there, might appease more strident Wahhabi opinion, both internally and internationally.

Yet such a move would run counter to the religious practice of most Muslims, Sunni and Shia, across the centuries. Most dangerously, an attack on the Prophet’s tomb will play into the hands of sectarian actors, who use theological difference as the engine of hatred and violence.

HolyHolla: themuslimissue./2014/08/03/isis-militant-announces-his-marriage-to-terrified-7-year-old-in-occupied-city-syria/
An ISIS terrorist militant forcefully married a terrified 7 year old 'kafir' girl only to later meet his tragic end at the hands of Iraqi military.
In a twitter post by a Muslim, Fadel_alHadid, a picture of the terrified little girl draped in ISIS flag was displayed, with the militant wearing a sneeringly happy face. But in another twitter post by Raju Paruleka, the happy face had turned into the face of an inhabitant of Hell after the militant met his tragic end through the bullets of Iraqi soldiers.
It may appear that justice has been duly served, except that even death is not enough punishment for such a grown up who chose to twist the destiny of a young innocent child. Much good would be served if our Muslim brothers could change their perception to the issue of child marriage.

Bros - na simple question now.

The number of books in the Bible depends on which Bible is being referenced. Protestant and Catholic churches recognize 27 New Testament books. Protestants recognize 39 books of the Jewish canon in the Old Testament. Roman Catholics hold 46 books of the Old Testament as canon, along with expanded versions of Esther and Daniel. In addition to the 73 books of the Catholic Bible, the Orthodox Church adds three more books to their canon. By far, the largest canon of all is found in the Ethiopic Church, whose Bible totals 81 books.

She trained and works in the USA
USA Made her
Iran had nothing to do with her success
Her fellow women in Iran are getting stoned
You guys are pathetic
Just to give this an Islamic flare you had to dig out a picture of her while she lives in Iraq and was mandated to wear a hijab
Why not post her current pictures from the same sites that gave you links to the story
She has since burned her hijab

read her biography well. she attained higher education in Iran. She obtained her BSc in mathematics (1999) from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran. She went to the United States for graduate work, earning a PhD from Harvard University (2004), where she worked under the supervision of the Fields Medalist Curtis McMullen. She was also a 2004 research fellow of the Clay Mathematics Institute and a professor at Princeton University. she was not born in the US. the fact remains that and this case has demonstrated that females born in Muslim societies where hijab is used can even outperform their non-muslim counterparts.

and by the way in Iran, where the hijab is mandatory for all mature females, there are more female than male university students. the Islam islamophobes want to paint for the world will lose eventually. Islam is for progress and education, and for life in both this world and the next.

malvisguy212: the quran say jesus was sinless and we all know adam is a sinner, dos that make the both of them equal?

i wont derail into another red herring. just for your info, Adam (as) was sinless. but that is another topic.

however, you have just shot yourself on the foot. if both Adam and Jesus (as), according to the Quran, were made from the spirit and word of God, and you then (ab)use that to twist Quran verses to elevate Jesus (as) to the position of a "god, and a "son of God", but you leave out Adam (as) because he is a "sinner", then you have got serious questions to answer. if being made from the spirit and word of God is enough qualification to be recognized as "God" Himself, then sorry, we Muslims do not believe in a God that can become a sinner, or in a God that satan can tempt for 40 days (Jesus was tempted as per the New testament). this goes to show that being made from God's word or spirit doesn't elevate you or Jesus or Adam (as) to become God! you can keep looking for silly points to argue over and dodge the facts because satan has licked your eyes!!!
