Thanks... venatus25: Don't just help by listing words and their spelling, he won't be able to remember all the spellings. In this very case you need take him back to the fundamental which include the 26 letter of the alphabet which comprises of the 5 vowels and 21 consonants, teach him the sound each vowel and consonant carries and how they are being combined to produce a unique sound or word. After this is done you can proceed to giving him example of words when combined by starting with two letter words then upgrade gradually to more letters word and also show him how to seperate letters when trying to pronounce complex letter words, example: mo-bi-li-za-tion, ca-me-ra, etc. Don't be in hurry, ensure he fully understand each step before proceedings to another step. If he is living in or could visit Akwa ibom state, I will personally volunteer to help him out at lease for a day. In my secondary school days, I've help 3 of my friends with similar problem. |

As for your friend, first of all, he needs to be willing to learn, cos if he is not, then anything you are doing to help him can not be appreciated and is dead on arrival.. If he is willing, then teach him and be strict on the routine.. He would adjust and improve with time.. All the best to him and you. Cheers.. |

Thank you. CeokRicchezza: Do you know phonics? If you don't, try to read up on phonics and study the 42 sounds and use that to teach him how to read. Queen premier won't help him at all. All you need is a good instructor or yourself that can explain how sounds works. From there, he will be able to pick words by listening to the sounds |

For some reasons many can read the bible but can't read any other book ...I don't know why. They can also speak very good English or so it may sound to listeners but they can't actually decipher what they mean.
It may because they read along with the pastor during church service and are able to make their way through reading it on their own but can't do so with any other book.
As for dashing me as BF ...won't mind and would've helped him improved more |

bigtt76: He needs to listen and watch more YouTube English Language training videos. You can search for those that will enable him read along and also get a notebook with which he can also be writing down what is being taught in the videos. That way he practices both reading comprehension and writing.
Why I asked if he was a born again is because jokes apart, they rarely want to read or study anything other than the Bible or listen to language training videos but would rather spend hours listening to their pastors and read the Bible. Not that it's not good but most times these pastors don't use the correct tenses while preaching and you latch on it. Then again the Bible (aside from the New English Version) is written in old English format.
Your friend needs to dedicate more time to this and trust me he will be better off within the shortest possible time. All the best and God bless you for assisting him. Thanks again for your input. You're very correct about the born again thing, listening to their pastors and the rest of it. He believes only in prayer and I have talked to him about it. |

He needs a specialist yes, I agree with you. The same and more questions I have also asked him and he said something about not knowing how he passed WAEC but as for JAMB, he did the computer base JAMB, picked any options he feels is right. then scored 145. Good morning guys,
Please, help me to help a friend.
I have tried everything possible within my capacity to help this guy but to no avail. My friend is 22 and currently in one of the federal polytechnic here in Nigeria. This guy can speak good english well but the problem is he can not read nor write, the only thing he can write down is his name and Reg. No.
Last year, before first semester exam. I noticed that this guy is always avoiding conversation that involves reading or studying. I never saw him read, not even once. We are neighbours and friends.
I just decided to take it upon myself to find out what was wrong as I know, he is a good person but hiding something. So I offered to be helping him with his assignments and handout summary to my amazement the guy find it hard to read what I smartly asked him to. He refused to admit that he can't read, probably he was a shame to admit it, so I let him be.
He, then finally opens up to me about him not been able to read and write. Of course, this was after first semesters exam and I had to perster him before he was able to tell me of his secret. How have you been writing the exam then? I asked, he said "I submit blank paper" when the result came out he had 6 COs (carry overs).
Again, I offered to help. I did all his assignments, encourage him to write something in all his test, He improved on his CA and others except for reading as I told him to at list write some thing down.even if it means coping from someone siting next to him without getting caught, I'm not encouraging exam malpractice but he needed help urgently.
Now here's my major challenge and concern, Since January this year, I have used Queen's Premier, used other English materials, vowel and consonant sound
The only thing he's been able to read are just few two letter words. Thought I was the problem, so I lied to a friend who happens to be a lecturer that the guy needs help, and that he's finding it hard to understand his books. The lecturer agreed to help but later told the guy not to come again as the guy is still not getting any thing.
Please, help.... the guy want to learn but I don't know what exactly could be the problem.
Inputs please, I anticipate your wise advice. Thanks. |

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Things You Should Do To Keep Your Job by lambszy(m): 2:52pm On Jun 26, 2021 |
You make a point. But all this don't guarantee one keeping his or her job... I know of some guys, that were laid off, in Lagos, just because some set of people in the company felt threatened by this guys's expertise... One man business is one of the places you get knowledge and experience. Not keeping the job. Cvclue11: One of the statements I hear from unemployed job seekers time and time again is to do everything you can to keep your current employment unless you're ready to move on and have a new position lined up. If you're dissatisfied at work, have a look at these suggestions for how to keep your job before submitting your resignation. You don't have to stay indefinitely, but if you can, you should try to stay at least until you find another job because it's more difficult to get work when you're unemployed. Make an effort to make the job work. Is there anything you could change to make the job work better? Is it possible to request a transfer or a shift change? Is there anything that could sway your opinion and persuade you to stay?
Work assiduously. Most companies don't mind if you spend a little time on Facebook or texting, but make sure you focus on your work and give your boss the time you're paid for. When it comes to layoffs, if the company needs to make a decision, your employer will keep the most productive staff.
Ascertain that you are one of them. Installing a Facebook blocker on your browser will make it more difficult to view the website if spending too much time on it is your main vice. Both Google Chrome and Apple have a couple of apps that are very good at limiting your Facebook usage.
Always arrive on time. Employees who are late to work, take a long lunch break, use a lot of sick time, and/or depart early every day will not be rewarded by their supervisor. Instead of making excuses for why you can't be at work, be on time and present. If your delay is due to a personal issue, set up a meeting with your manager to explain the circumstance. Inquire if you can stay late to make up for missed time until the problem is resolved. If the situation is urgent enough, most companies will sympathize and be accommodating. Play well with others. Be the employee who gets along with everyone, doesn't engage in workplace gossip, and is willing to assist coworkers. A pleasant attitude and friendliness go a long way toward winning your coworkers' respect and trust. This strategy could potentially increase your job satisfaction and happiness.
Be adaptable. Flexibility might be an important factor in keeping your employment. Consider volunteering if your personal schedule allows when your company needs someone to alter shifts, work weekends, put in some extra, or take on additional jobs. Don't be a whiner. Nobody hates complainers, no matter how valid their grievances are. If you don't like your job, keep in mind that there are plenty of others who would gladly take it. One technique to avoid whining is to express thankfulness by stating, "I receive" rather than "I have" to accomplish anything. You will immediately begin to view the glass half full by changing one word! Offer to assist. Volunteering for new initiatives, offering to help with projects, and taking on more responsibility are all excellent methods to gain (or preserve) job stability. It will also benefit you because the more jobs outside of your comfort zone you take on, the more you will learn and progress
Separate your social media and professional lives. Even if you despise your job, keep your feelings to yourself or trusted family and friends. Don't vent your frustrations on social media since you never know who will read it. That could be enough to cost you your job.
Maintain a positive attitude. A good attitude is contagious and essential for long-term employment retention. On my desk is a Post-it note with Rosanne Cash's phrase, "Cheerfulness is a choice." Maintaining a cheerful attitude, especially in the face of adversity, will make your life and that of your coworkers much simpler. Make modest changes to your everyday routine to become more positive if you're trapped in a negative rut. |
