The Vice President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), UNILORIN chapter has brought to light reasons why UNILORIN workers don’t go on strike. The institution management was recently applauded for not giving the varsity any cause to embark on industrial action. The Vice-President (West) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Comrade Alfred I. Jimoh, gave this commendation last Friday (May 8, 2015), while speaking at the 51st quarterly meeting of the Western Zone of the Union held at the University of Ilorin Auditorium. According to Comrade Jimoh, it was the management that has not allowed the Union to embark on strike by always responding promptly to the demands of the Union. He further urged the Vice-Chancellor to continue to see to the welfare of the University workers. “You must make your staff happy to continue to be better by far”. The SSANU leader also commended the Unilorin Branch of the Union for its developmental strides and cordial relationship with the University management. He affirmed that the Unilorin Branch of SSANU is very active contrary to insinuations that the Union is dead. |

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. -Albert Einstein From the student perspective; not only do the Nigerian school want 'our fish' to climb a tree, they want it to fly high in the sky like a bird, which at it's entirety can never happen. We are not robots! *The modern day Nigerian schooling and the government! and the staff* To every leader out there in the system; is anyone of you proud of what you're doing or have done so far? Do you realize how many kids relate to that fish? -thinking there is no point in this 'old-school' type of educational system? Thinking they're forced to believe and repeat the same thing, attending different lectures, virtually the same way- same boring way everyday! Enough of these boring theories! Shall we proceed? The world has progressed, students who are creative and innovative, and who can think independently and critically should be recognized. Not those that can memorize a whole physics textbook, without being able to prove a dime about Isaac Newton's law of motion practically. Again, the world has evolved. Let's do more of hands-on teaching. A new study finds that undergraduate students in classes with traditional stand-and-deliver lectures are 1.5 times more likely to fail than students in classes that use more stimulating, so-called active learning methods.♂ Little wonder why an average Nigerian student is a genius overseas, where adequate and efficient hands-on educating methods are conducted other than a persistent inadequate, ineffective and inefficient, noncreative form of education. We read the news everyday- Nigerian graduate bags first class here and there overseas. Every scientist would tell you no two brains are the same, and every parent of course, would confirm that claim. ```So tell me why a teacher would stand in front of students with different needs, different dreams, different gifts, and teach them the same thing, same way all round the year! That's horrific! I call this educational malpractice! ``` Imagine a doctor prescribing the same drugs to all of his patients. The result would be TRAGIC. You complain of poor performances almost everytime. Wait a minute.. Why would students be forced to offer series of 'meaningless and stressful courses' (courses which some students are extremely bad at) from other departments. They're forced to offer these courses for years, yet retaining the same boring traditional teaching method. This is an act of intellectual abuse. It is time wasting and dream crushing. Yet you force us all to compete for the "A"s. A letter better used to determine a product's quality. Grade "A" palm oil for example. Not our grades! Some tests are too crude for students. I'm not preaching laziness here. It's obviously the naked truth. The school is an ancient institution that has outlived it's usage. Compare for example the modern day communication, automobiles and hospitals to how they used to be in the 70s. There is big difference right? Obviously, the change has been significantly constant. Now compare the modern day schooling to that of the 70s. No difference!! Still the same traditional boring, noncreative stand-and-deliver way of lecturing while the world has massively evolved. Yet our teachers complain in front of the class every now and then. How disheartening Attached is a picture of the Nigerian classroom in the 80s. In literally over half a century, nothing has changed in the schooling system. Yet they claim to prepare students for the future, but the question here is are we preparing the students for the future or the past? Isn't the past even far better? In the past, there are big chances you get employed- as in get paid as an undergraduate. Government sponsors your education, companies come competing for fresh graduates and all that.. They say education is the best legacy, well that's true but not in the modern day Nigeria! A country where heartless looters are celebrated. I accuse people of authority for killing creativity, individuality, and the intellectual of the students- the budding leaders! Well, most of the people who created or rather approve these curriculums never had the experience of being a teacher, oh! they don't even have the potentials of being one. They fly their own wards out of the country! Leaving them out of the ill educational standards/policies they formulated. Since they are successful, they care less about the future of the unsuccessful citizens. In conclusion, let's talk about the way the government treats the employees. The heartbreaking issue is 'underpayment of staff'. Let's talk about the teaching staff. Teachers have the most important job on the planet but yet, they are underpaid. Let's be honest, teachers should earn as much as doctors. Doctors can perform surgical operations on the heart of a kid, agreed. But a great teacher reaches into the heart and soul of the kid, he prepares his mind for a better future. When these teachers are not adequately paid, they are hardly motivated to genuinely deliver their various teaching duties. They would save a future drug addict, a kidnapper, and an armed robber who would ruin, and negatively influence the lives good people, only and only if they are adequately paid and appreciated. . Stop underpaying our teachers. Save the future. It's time we start imitating a country like China. Both the government and the school staff should focus on aptitude tests and boost the creativity in students, other than those theories which even the teachers cannot prove. I wonder how a biochemist is able to work perfectly in a banking hall. What's our d^mn stress gan?? *** On the other hand anyways.. If the lecturers are well paid, such cases as ASUU strike would never occur. We all know the effect the six months strike had on students. Bad things happened. The outside world is real! _...a concerned Nigerian student.._ *GBADEBO GBOLAHAN A.* *=====•••••••••••••=====* ```p.k.a``` *PHENOL*

Diezani finally breaks silence Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison Madueke has finally spoken on several allegations of financial impropriety levelled against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Diezani said she never stole Nigeria’s money. The former Minister made the claim in a statement she issued yesterday. She said the anti-graft agency was taking advantage of her silence to try and convict her in the media hence her response. Recall that the EFCC had alleged that Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former minister of Petroleum Resources, by an order of a Federal High Court has forfeited $153.3 million to the Federal Government. Diezani’s statement, which was made available to newsmen in Abuja, reads, “I wish to state I cannot forfeit what was never mine. “I do not know the basis on which the EFCC has chosen to say that I am the owner of these funds as no evidence was provided to me before the order was obtained, and they have not, in fact, served me with the order or any evidence since they obtained it.” “Let me re-state categorically as I have always maintained, for the record, I have not and will never steal money from or defraud the Federal Government of Nigeria. I am willing to respond to charges brought against me that follow duly laid down procedures,” she said. The former Minister dared the EFCC to without further delay, publish details of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC’s accounts from where the said $153.3 million was taken. She also said that the report that Italian prosecutors indicted her for sharing in the loot of the $1.3 billion OPL 245 oil block deal, which involved Malabu and the Joint Venture Multinational partners, ENI (AGIP) and Royal Dutch was false. She continued, “Let me once again state for the record that this is another figment of the author’s imagination, which, given the persistent bid to ensure my destruction and stick all of the sins of the corruption that plagued oil and gas sector in the last 30 years upon my head, probably emanated from the EFCC itself. “Let me clear the history of OPL 245, otherwise known as Malabu. You will find a full chronology in the attached report that I made to the House of Representatives in late 2011 (Annex 2A/Annex-2B). “In 2010, shortly after I was appointed as Minister of Petroleum Resources, the issue of OPL 245 was brought to my attention. I looked into the case and immediately became aware of the inherent and long standing sensitivities around this issue. “It became clear from the onset that this case was not within the direct purview of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, but, in the main, was centered around issues of law. “By this time, there was already an International Centre for Settlement of Investment Dispute (ICSID) investigation and claims against the FGN running into billions of dollars. “Therefore, we took directives from the Chief Legal Officer of the nation; the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. In all of these matters due process was followed to the letter at all times. “I wish to categorically state that I have never held any discussions on this matter, with any individuals or entities outside of official channels. “As Minister of Petroleum Resources, I did not participate in any activity relating to financial payments on the Malabu matter, other than those statutorily mandated to the Minister of Petroleum Resources by the Petroleum Act. “My role in this matter was purely a statutory, one as required by law in the Petroleum Act 3. “In response, I have chosen not to insult, accuse or demonise any person or persons. In spite of all the allegations that have been made against me, not one has been factually proven. “I remain very proud of the fact that all the policies, tenets and plans that I initiated in the oil and gas sector are still underpinning the entire structure. |

The Journey So Far In Funaab -by PHENOL IG @phe_nol Whatsapp 08101034997 Episode One Though I've always been to 'Unaab' even before I officially became a student of the federal school, but how _rough an academic session can go dawned on me as we moved down the calendar, just this session. ![]() Hey! before I continue, do ensure you take your time as this promises to be very interesting. I tell you! This is more like a diary, so expect it in a couple of episodes. ![]() Since Exam is gone, and the workload is apparently lifted for a while; it's a divine opportunity to reminisce on the past events! Shall we start from the Genesis? ![]() I can barely remember how it went down on the day of post UTME, but I can hardly forget the awesome feeling after the results were released. Post Utme gone Result checked Admission granted Fast forward to my first day in the department, the first figure I met was a sister- _a typical one without earrings. Her appearance made me suddenly thought the word of God was right in front of me in the form of human. She looked so innocent! ![]() She gave me some hints about the registration so far, as she was way further than me in the registration process. I met a couple of the new family afterwards, that same day. The euphoria was boldly written on their faces. The empathy and the optimism possessed by the _computer guys_ that filled the streets that led to the school summarized the level of hustle in Funaab- _you go fear hustle_. ![]() I was daunted by the rate of their productivity. I knew I was going to patronize one, and possibly some of them; for the computer works of my precious documents. Back to the registration proper. * I never knew the deal I was getting into; though I knew registration could be so hectic, but not this arduous! Boy! Was the registration an epitome of stress!- a fact attributable to the population size. It got to some extent where you have to exchange drinks for the stamp and signatures. Only the ones with some _bucks_ do the smooth workout at those stages, it was fun anyway. We got so familiar with our administrators within a little time. Most of them were friendly, I'll admit. What a great department and college as a whole!. I'll never end this chapter without acknowledging the efforts of the department students' association executives in all ramifications as well. * _soft days_ rolled into _solid weeks_ of registration.. Fast forward to the stage of medicals- the most frustrating stage. Without prejudice, not a single coordinator or medical practitioner in the centre interested me. ![]() The most annoying part is the part where you have to transport your *excreta to school in tiny bottles. As if the urine was not enough, they needed the stools likewise- unlike my previous school, where only the urine is required for the medicals. I just imagined how everyone managed to get their stools into the tiny bottles because it wasn't easy on my part. I wonder how the pretty ladies did theirs too, and kept the bottles so clean on the outside.. I entered the clinic with my specimens wrapped in tough polythene nylons that very day, just to hear a coordinator's voice from behind. 'Hey boy, take off the nylons, and bring them out'. I wasn't too surprised because I saw almost everyone seated next to their naked specimen. _you go fear packaging_ I was going to sit beside my naked specimens too anyway. Back on the part of the medical practitioners; they were so strict! Some were even harsh. They wouldn't manipulate even the simplest part of their reforms for any reason whatsoever. They reminded everyone of his/her secondary school days, regardless of the age. ![]() CUT!* And who wouldn't have something to say about the events of the just concluded academic session? Of course, the session has proved it's uniqueness in so many ways over the months, most especially the just concluded semester. _...to be continued_ |

since you have nothing to hide and have a clear conscience
