in their private parts or even cutting themselves,
while wealthier women often get gynecological
exams before marriage and do hymen-repair
surgery in the event that no hymen is found.
There is so much confidence in the idea that an
intact hymen proves virginity that the trend in
many countries now is to have one's daughter
"officially certified" as a virgin by a clinic. This is
so embarassing for the girls that a number of
them (most notably in Turkey) have committed
suicide rather than be touched by strangers in
this bizarre, invasive manner.

The over 3,000 soldiers who were recently pardoned for their alleged refusal to fight Boko Haram have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to order the payment of their salary arrears.

The soldiers were dismissed and put on trial during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s regime but they were recently reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari after their cases were reviewed by the army authorities.

The affected soldiers, after their recall, were said to have been sent back to the battlefront to confront the insurgents they allegedly ran away from in the first instance.

The recalled soldiers’ lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana(SAN), told our correspondent in an interview in Abuja on Monday, that his clients were happy and appreciative of the Federal Government’s gesture.

He said the reinstatement of the soldiers had further boosted the morale of the soldiers and that their commitment to fighting Boko Haram had doubled.

But he said the soldiers would want the Federal Government to pay their salary arrears issue as soon as possible.

Falana said, “The panel set up by the Chief of Army Staff listened to all the victims and recommended that 3,002 dismissed officers and soldiers be recalled and reinstated.

“The Chief of Army Staff accepted the recommendation and decided to implement the recommendation. Upon their reinstatement the dismissed officers and soldiers were rehabilitated and posted to the 7th Division in Maiduguri.

“I am eternally indebted to the Federal Government and the military authorities for ensuring that justice was done.

“The soldiers have been fully integrated into the army. However, having been pardoned, the reinstated soldiers are pleading with the authorities to pay them their outstanding salaries.”

He said it was wrong in the first instance to say the affected solders refused to fight the insurgents, saying that their grudge was that they were given inferior weapons to fight members of the Boko Haram sect.

Falana said their appeal for clemency for the soldiers was boosted with the revelation made by a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Alex Barde, that the military under his command was not properly equipped.

This revelation, he added, aided the representation the soldiers made to the army authorities.

He said, “Our representation coincided with the belated revelation of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Barde to the effect that the armed forces led by him lacked the equipment to fight the insurgents.

“At that juncture, the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, decided to set up a panel to review the cases of the convicted, detained and dismissed officers and soldiers.”

He said it would be wrong to assume that the act of recalling soldiers who were unjustly dismissed would encourage indiscipline.

Falana said, “The act of recalling soldiers who were unjustly and illegally dismissed cannot encourage indiscipline in the armed forces. As a matter of fact, it has boosted the morale of the troops.

“By the way, section 179 of the Armed Forces Act imposes a duty on commanding officers to attend to complaints of soldiers under their supervision.

“In the instant case, the troops wanted to know why they were not provided with weapons since the Federal Government had earmarked huge funds to prosecute the war on terror. Instead of attending to the legitimate complaint, the authorities decided to try them for mutiny.”
