Nairaland GeneralFire Rages At Downtown Dubai's High-rise Address Hotel by lanrexdo(op): 11:30pm On Dec 31, 2015
(CNN)Firefighters battled a massive blaze that engulfed a luxury hotel in Dubai Thursday night while a spectacular New Year's fireworks display lit up the night sky nearby.

Orange tentacles of flames engulfed a large section of the high-end Address hotel soon after the blaze began around 9:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. ET). Hours later, dark plumes of smoke billowed from the building as the fire still appeared to be searing several stories.

Witnesses told CNN they heard explosions as the fire raged.

Early reports from Dubai authorities said the fire started on the 20th floor of the 63-floor hotel. Jaqueline Hurtado, a CNN en Español correspondent, said she was at a restaurant in the area when she heard an explosion, "like a loud pop," and thought the fireworks display may have started early.

Then she and others noticed flames at the hotel, and were soon evacuated from the area.

"That fire was big. The fire was just going so fast," she said. "It just started burning real quick."

At least 16 people were injured, the Dubai government's media office said Thursday night on Twitter.

But the highly anticipated New Year's Eve festivities in the United Arab Emirates' most populous city -- including what was billed as one of the world's largest fireworks displays -- went ahead as planned. Cheering crowds of onlookers watched as bursts of color filled the sky.

Just a few blocks away, the scene was dramatically different.

At the Address hotel, which describes itself as "the premier five-star hotel" in Dubai, flames appeared to be devouring growing portions of the high-rise, even as government officials said the blaze was largely contained.

The fire started around 9:30 p.m., witnesses said. It was not immediately clear what started the blaze.

Maha Abouelnebin, who lives in Dubai, told CNN she was with her family having dinner in the hotel. She saw what appeared to be a low flame and thought maybe someone was cooking something.

Then she said she realized, "Oh my God ... that's a fire. ... We decided we needed to get out of there."

Staff were very efficient in moving people out of the hotel, she said. "They got us out calmly... quickly. We were impressed with how easy we got out of there."

Soon Hong, who lives in an apartment across from the mall near the Address, said he was setting up his camera near a window to capture the fireworks when he heard something that drew his attention.

"I looked up and the entire building was in flames," he said. "It took seconds."

Bruce Szczepanski was setting up a camera on a balcony at a nearby hotel to take pictures of the fireworks when he saw the blaze break out.

"All of the sudden, you saw the flames, and everyone was focused, running to try to get a better vantage point," he said.

Once the fireworks started, he said, he didn't know where to look.

"I was torn; do I watch the fireworks, or do I continue to watch the fire?" he said.

The fire broke out as governments around the world were on high alert for possible terrorist attacks tied to New Year's Eve celebrations, but there was no immediate indication that terrorism was to blame for the blaze.

Jonathan Gilliam, a CNN law-enforcement analyst, said he was surprised by how fast the fire spread.

"This is looking absolutely horrific," he said. "This is spreading very rapidly."

On its website, the hotel says that its "spacious and bright rooms offer a dynamic sense of style and a striking design that appeals to all tastes across the international travel market."

"Dubai's social scene happens here from our stylish rooms to our unique choice of modern outlets, ideal for everything from a social cup of coffee to our fabulous brunches, exquisite dinners and the best late night venues," the hotel website says.

The government's media office said guests evacuated from the hotel would be provided with new accommodations.

CNN's Becky Anderson, Kim Kelaita, Justin Lear, Brianna Keilar, Mohammed Tawfeeq, Mark Bixler and Caroline Faraj contributed to this report.

PhonesRe: How Policemen Connive With Area Boys At Ikeja, Computer Village by lanrexdo(m): 1:35pm On Oct 22, 2015
Well They work hand in hand, Don't walk like a JJC in Village and don't mind them when they are stalking you, it is a normal thing and when they apporach you then tell them say you no get shishi.. DONT EVER APPROACH A POLICEMAN IN VILLAGE.. THEM BE WEE WEE.It has only happened to me once and yes, they will surely be the guys with cuts on their head. It is a normal protocol. Don't ever buy anything near the shops under the bridge too. They have a good position to survey you and yes they can pick your pocket there.. They are mostly the guys who operate at night and early morning..So Afternoon is just a day to look at things and do the normal taxing!!

Sanchez01:
Perhaps one or two persons would relate to my ordeal after sharing.

I went to the Computer Village at Ikeja on Saturday, 17th Oct, to purchase a head phone I had longed to get for a while now. I had an example of what I wanted in mind and was not ready to compromise my stand on this.

I had also made up my mind not to go too deep for security reasons; computer village touts/area boys are more concentrated in the farther part of the market and being harassed unduly was not just it for me.

The first shop I visited just by the bridge didn't have what I wanted and the guy therein cajoled me into buying something else which was not just it. I wasted no time in trying out the next shop but I noticed I was being followed by 4 mean looking guys. I couldn't tell for how long I was stalked but it was pretty obvious something wasn't right.

Fortunately, I saw the "HD Monster Micro SD Player beats by dr. dre" in the next shop and wasted no time in bargaining. I paid, came out of the shop with the intent of moving towards the bridge, only to find out that my stalkers (now about 5 of them) had divided themselves like a pack of wolves who has their sights on a gazelle.

Seeing that it was becoming a nightmare by the minute, I moved towards some policemen who were around one of their vans under the bridge. One of the touts, supposedly their boss walked up to me while the others surrounded me in no time. Micro SD sellers turned spectators as well as passers' by. I could see the policemen looking at us from a distance. They were clearly unmoved by the scene, judging by the expression their faces.

One of the touts spoke up "a ti n so e lataaro" (we've been stalking you for a while). It didn't really come as a surprise but what I did wrong is what I couldn't picture.

"Oya, fun wa l'owo!" (Now, give us money!) Their supposed head retorted. It was a dream. How in the world would touts harass someone in the presence of policemenhuh

Quite scared, I told him I didn't understand what I had done to warrant being "fined". At my words, the minions were ready to attack me but couldn't as their boss calmed them. Obviously angry at this point, he said "a n be a so lero, o fe gbo. O fe ka gba gbogbo t'owo e, abi?" (We have told you calmly, you don't want to listen. Do you want us to take everything on you?"

The crowd had increased by this time and they watched helplessly while the policemen didn't move a nerve. It was at this point it dawned on me what I was up against. Without wasting time, I reached for my wallet which was carefully tucked away in my pant's back pocket and offered them #500 but he (their supposed boss) refused it, claiming my money is #2000!

I was baffled. I tucked my #500 away and gave them #1000 which they collected and started stumping a foot each on the ground as they sang my praise. I heaved a sigh of relief as I quickly proceeded to leave the scene. It was pretty embarrassing to say the least.

I shared my ordeal with a friend yesterday and he confirmed he had faced something similar. His case however was shocking. He claimed he resisted and the policemen "arrested" all of them while he "bailed" himself with #2000 without going to a police station.undecided

Please be wary of these touts at Ikeja. Some officers of the NPF have no life.

Lalasticlala, please help raise this awareness.
