FastShipping: My site terrain is similar to yours. For my own fence, we had to use concrete wall of 3ft, 4ft and 5ft in some areas before setting blocks on them. The rocks at my own site weren't much but we did remove rocks here and there when I first bought the land few years ago. I have never seen where double blocks were used for fence as they did yours. They do it atimes... I think they will later pour concrete inside the holes. Where is yr site located? |

Yea dey use it for building, blocks work is just Wat everyone is used to here. Your rock is granite and are very durable than block. Though all these bricklayers might not know how to work it out. You might just use it for yr foundation. Here r some walls made from rock. The finishing cud b expensive. https://www.nairaland.com/3236298/know-geophysical-investigation-borehole-drilling

In Nigeria, two types of drilling are majorly in use... These are mud(rotary) drilling and air percussion drilling. The difference is in the drilling fluid used which is mud and air.
In Lagos and other sedimentary environment, what we use is the mud fluid while in basement complex we use air. In some situations where the overburden is deep in basement complex air fluid might find it difficult to work.
The functions of the fluid is... To bring cuttings to the surface, to cool and lubricate the drilling bit and also to stabilize the wall of the hole from collapsing. Some additives/polymers are added as the case may be from site to site.
During drilling, logging is done by the scientist to keep track of depth of formation encounter.
After drilling, the hole should be properly cased, grouted and flushed.
The essence of flushing is to bring out any residue cuttings that might block the hole also to make the water clean.
After flushing, installation is done by using an appropriate pump size depending on the yield. If a wrong pump is use, it's going to affect the life span of the hole.
After all this is done, then you can test the water if it is potable and thereafter carry out some treatment. A properly constructed borehole is normally potable but test like pH, EC, Tds, cation, anion and bacteria should be carried out immediately to confirm if they vary from WHO standards so as to advice on treatment. |

The cost of a borehole depends on these factors... depth and the type of rock we have to drill through
To most people, drilling is getting a machine and putting a hole in the ground which is more than that. It's more of engineering and science. Once you get the science right, the uncertainties and risk will be greatly reduced. By the way, A driller is only trained at operating rigs and putting hole in the ground and not getting water. Though a team work is required for a successful drilling.
A skilled driller knows how to keep the hole vertical and open till completion is done. His expertise is needed to control the drill pressure and speed as it penetrate different rock types or formations (sand/clay/gravel/granite/quartzite). |

While drilling, what we aim at is the groundwater which is water found in the pore space of rocks.
As you all know, hydrological cycle also affects this water but to a minimal.
The level below which all the pore spaces in the ground are filled with water is called the water table. The entire region below the water table is called the saturated zone, and water in this saturated zone is called ground water.
An aquifer is an underground formation of permeable rock that can produce useful quantities of water when tapped.
We have consolidated aquifer such as sandstone here the grains/aggregates are connected/cemented to each other.
We also have unconsolidated aquifer such as sand, gravel... Here the grains are loose from each other.
Fractured aquifer... Found in solid rocks. Here water moves through cracks, joints, or fractures.
Unconfined aquifer have no confining rock layers over the top. Water only reaches the level at which the well meets the aquifer.
Confined aquifer... Here the water will rise above the top of the aquifer because of the confining pressure.
This is why the cost of drilling differs. Drilling an unconfined aquifer is quite easier and less expensive. The sediments are mostly unconsolidated and if not done properly can be susceptible to surface contaminants.

I the above examples on geophysical investigations for water is enough. You should note that the method used is the electrical method. It is very effective and will clearly identify suitable borehole locations for siting the borehole.
As the case may be, other methods Like magnetics, EM may be combine with the electrical method.
You should also know that in prospecting for water, we are not seeing the water... What we see are structures that are likely to house water. That is the interpretation is open to several meaning.
But from experience and knowledge of geology of the area, one can be saved from misinterpretation. This is also part of the reasons why methods are combined.
Picture attached is a typical electrical meter.... Terameter. It goes for not less than 3.5m
Now let me give a short note on drilling.

mufutau55: Mr. Larwin... but I beg to disagree with you. Quality Yes, but higher price/quote does not mean quality. As soon as some people see that you are calling from diaspora, their mind started thinking of buying a Mercedes on a simple job. You just have to know which Builder/Contractors/Service Provider you are dealing with. Some people just simply think by adding "Engineer" to their name deserves more in their quotation.... Yes, charge me your fees but not over quoting me. I have worked with some Engineers/Contractors/Builders/Servicemen here on Nairaland, so I do know what I am talking about. And the above does not apply only to people from Diaspora, but also native people at home too... Until we can have a standard of measuring job and the quality in Naija, this kind of thing will not end.
When someone do some good work for you apart from their fees, there is something we call "TIPS" here...which can be added as gratuity to show your happiness towards the good job they have done.. I have done this several times... and most of our people are surprised when this is done... I hope you can understand a little from what I have explained above...
Hajji M. u r right sir, some people will over high Dere charges once they know yr calling from abroad and hope you know dat some too will under quote u so as to entice the client. This is where the client has to be very careful. This issue is very complex. Am just happy for a forum like ds cos it's going to save millions of people Dere is no standard quote but Every person/organisation have their standard which can be compared. It is from quote comparison and other technical information about the organization decisions should be based on. |

In my small experience, I tend to find that if the person that you are calling for project monitoring can also do the real thing, if they do not supply the materials or bring the workers, they hardly put their all into it, unless you find a really God fearing person, shebi na to dey send picture, remember how 3strike was being sent pictures even though his builder then (BRabus) was no way near site.
The best person to supervise is you yourself who owns the project. Its just that those in diaspora do not have that luxury, thats why the likes of brabus thrive, saying that there are some really good people on here, spyder, segemoore , abdulwastec to name a few, diaspora or no diaspora, the work gets done as agreed.
Good that you report back to a client after you visit thier site, I really like that. It just shows you care. Keep it up God dey O. |

Why people from Diaspora, are they the only ones who want quality but cheap services ? I think i have to disagree, just because you have painted everybody with thesame brush, you do however make very valid points, however let me add some salt to the cooking.
As brag previously pointed out, even the most expensive service isnt always the best value for money. I look at value for money and not necessarily cheapest.
Let me throw out some questions.
# FG discovers fake malaria tablets, do you think that someone from diaspora would have sanctioned the importation/production of fake malaria products, I am sure its cheaper than the real thing.
# I watched a documentary a very long time ago, then the woman that was busting fake stuff through NAFDAC was in focus busting so many fake pharmacies supplying fake drugs, the indians where the drugs came from said that it was Nigerians on the ground who asked them to fill the capsules with chalk. I cant remember the womans name, she had so many death threats because of her patriotic actions.
# Topsy/Apocatelic or some username like that have lamented on the high number of fake electrical cables in the market, was that sanctioned by people in Diaspora wanting quality stuff for cheap prices ? I do not know the sales figures, but I would not be suprised if such cables are selling faster than coleman, Kabelmetal etc.
What everyone should also know is that I started following Brabus 4/5 years ago, then the wealth of information available now was not available then, for starters NL had so few builders then. I was really inspired by a chap who finished a house called OLUWA CHAMPION. It takes courage and determination to expose fraudsters, the people doing so now do not get paid for thier time, they are doing so, in order to ensure that we do not have a repeat of their experience, and to also be each others brothers keeper. Sir, I understood the point your saying well. You r very right. I strongly agree dat people abroad will never go for anything counterfeit or fake or of less quality. The situation in Nigeria is critical, one just have to be very careful and thank God for IT, we have access to information easily now. |

I will only advise you use the big Chinese rigs cos of that terrain They do charge 5k per meters 80m will go for 400k If they hit water before 80m, your change hoes into your pocket Yea, you are inline sir. The local rigs are still different. |

msogunro: Thank you. He said smaller rig. He said it goes just as deep and the borehole would end up the same as if it was done by the big rig.
I asked why it was cheaper, but he kept saying it is because it's smaller. Doesn't make sense to me. I was hoping someone would know. Smile, rig is just a tool be it big or small. A small rig can work perfectly than big rig. The size na just design. American rigs are compact, Indians rig are the big. To me it shouldn't affect the price dat much. If a small rig will get me a discount of 150k then what is the bigger rig doing in the market. I don't know his intents but it doesn't sound too good. In ibadan you can't get less than 5k per meter. I think that's what I gave you. |

Yea, u r right. I think what people need here is no more talk about Brabus.
Let people give d way forward so as not to fall victim. Be it family or outsider, nobody will want to see something below the standard he desires.
There is an adage in Yorùbá that bí ojú bá farabale ó má rí mú........ I will just say we should be careful in jumping at deals. Not all enticing deals are good for your money and not all costly deals are good too but if you are watchful and prayerful too you will definitely not enter into the wrong hand.
Let's erase the mentality of looking for cheaper services too, it doesn't work here. Pls believe me.
From me the best you can do is to compare standard company quotes, it will help a lot.
There is what we called Project monitoring. You can employ a company for ds or individuals with good integrity. they will make sure you get the best service.
If I go to any Nairalander site to work, I always try to give them a feedback on what is happening on their site. |

Demainman1: The bolded is very true. I also fell for this option
I went for the cheapest roofer and the guy barber my head anyhow
Apart from going the cheapest quote route, I also struggle to understand how grown men who worked hard for their money abroad will just call Brabus, negotiate and hand over in some instance more than N10 million naira to him to deliver a house to them. I mean are people that naive or is Brabus using juju on them? What is wrong with you buying all your materials and just pay surpevision cost?
Even after handing over all that money, these people don't even deem it necessary to employ family members to monitor Brabus only relying on photos sent by Brabus. Na wa for some people o.
I keep hearing don't involve your family in your house building. Dem go chop your money. OK, now that you gave your house build to a professional, how far?
Any new person that comes on this site to report Brabus of fraud for a project started in the last year will no longer have my sympathy. Enough of all these nonsense.
Give Brabus a second chance at your own peril.
If I give Brabus a second chance after knowing all that I know about him on the forum, I intend to bear the consequences (good or bad) alone without disturbing any of you guys.
Thanks. Seriously that's just it. If you are in the diaspora, what you should be after is quality even if it's at the expense of over paying though some people are bad.... they will over charge you and still won't deliver. But me personally I don't support going after cheap service. As a professional, I don't offer it I have a corporate standard and as a person I don't go for it. I think the reason for nt using family members for supervision is just to make everything formal. You can't possibly charge your family members to court if dey defraud u. If your builder didn't meet up with the agreement you can easily take strict steps against him. Giving somebody 10m, 20m at once is not done. It's not hearable. In ideal business world, you pay for project in percentages and not once. |

A smaller drill might not be able to go as deep as a bigger one. Have you tried asking them about these 2 points ? You are talking bout bit size here, it shouldn't influence price dat much.
