I need some advice regarding borehole. Site is in Obada, Abeokuta
I did 2 geo-surveys and they both pointed to same thing, similar spots.
I contacted 2 drillers. One is charging me about 1.9m for the total package and the other one is asking that I pay him as things unfold. drill, installation, procurement and I'll later pay for his service charge (he hinted that around 1.5m will sort everything). I have done borehole in my previous project but this seem to be an entirely different experience.
They both said that they're going to be using the Indian drilling machine.
Kindly offer your advice. I want to get it right this time. I already wasted 600k on a deep well, with the pumping machine now stolen.

If it's the Obada along Lagos Expressway, possibility of a successful drill using Indian machine is 30% simply because of the thick overburden layer before basement rock.

The charges they gave you is fair considering the cost of materials for a good job.

Most of these problems start form first day in the journey of borehole drilling, from my experience get a knowledgeable geophysicist survey test reports, at least 2 opinions to compare their report, it's very important. From my experience in Ajah the entire area had issues with iron in the water and you can see from every house around the neighborhood has red-ish color on there water tanks. When I invited my driller after the report, the first report suggested to drill between 55 - 60 meters to get good water, anything above the depth is salty water and we must go to another 140 meters to get clean water again. The another test suggested something similar as well, approximately in the same location without any of them meeting each other. When the driller came he was extra careful not to go beyond those recommendations and the drilled approximately 60 1/2 meters and that's how we ended up getting the best water in the entire neighborhood.

Yea, Ajah is a very terrible terrain to get clean water. As you were able to get one, the property value should increase by 3. Most properties there rely on tankers to drop clean water for them. Getting clean water is based on both geologist and drillers' experience, and God.

Surface runoff is finding it's way into your Borehole. Try to do cementation around the hole head.

But you can tell him to use martya pump, it's not expensive and regulate power consumption automatically. All these lorenzi Interdab will burn if Yr power supply is nt dat good.

Woe, as they say, is me.

They must ve been drilling blindly with no clear image of what's in the subsurface. If you are close to them you can tell them to pause the drilling and reconduct a comprehensive geophysical Investigation, the investigation must be of high resolution to a depth of about 200-500m.

It was actually my water supplier that insisted I sink a borehole because 1) I was spending too much money and 2) The roads in my area were not palatable to him and his truck.

I really have no recommendation but Larwin is the resident borehole expert on here.

It's always the best to sink borehole before starting any project, it saves a lot of cost and stress but most people are always so eager to see the building standing...

Drilling is not an easy task and some areas are just mad, carrying out a geophysical Investigation before purchasing lands can save some heartaches.


There is no formula for getting good quantity of water from the ground, but it's always good to follow best practice as this will reduce the %error introduced by equipment and nature to the barest minimum. No geophysical Survey tool in this world can give you 100% iteration, it can just be 99%.

This is the professional truth but our people won't follow it. They want someone that will use mouth swear that there is water there, once you hear something like this, just know that the person is 100% quack.

Also terrains differs to each other, deploying rigs designed for places like Abẹ́òkúta, Ibadan to locations like mowe, ibafo, Lagos is like putting a round peg in square hole, there is no way they can handle the job! And you will keep on spending money.

Even rigs to be deployed to sedimentary areas get level, some won't just have the energy to penetrate some important rock formations which is sealing the water.

As Lagos is, we have drillings that are around 80k and we have drillings that are not less than 80m. The scope of work is different!

My experience with submersible pumps, original Interdab1hp never disappoint in last 15 years when I brought the first one even since, is still the best in my experience with their output capacity. I bought couple of them for different locations since then. Either Russian or Italian made. The last one I brought pumped 10,000liters in less than 20 mins with over 95 meter depth of borehole, if it's not commercial borehole I don't think the guy needs to 2 hp, .75hp to 1hp is good enough to pump over 100 meters in my opinion

Yea, pump capacity should be based on yield and not only depth of Borehole. We can use a 1.5-2hp pump on shallow depths of around 40m if the yield is excellent. And we can use 0.75-1hp on a hole of 90-100m if the yield is just fair. In whatever case, there should be a pump testing to determine the best capacity for the hole having in mind that any inbalance can lead to pump getting burnt.

In some cases, if the subsurface is not stable and good Casing is not used, you might end up having a collapse borehole as a result of vibrations from pump.

He never drill for me but his report show us the way among 4 different reports I paid for, he did couple other reports for me in different locations without knowing whom I am till date. He came from Ibadan then, I don't know if he still reside there.

sir. Thanks for the good words. Like I always, say. Drilling is very difficult, infact I don't like taking drilling projects but they just keep coming. Like in ds mowe ofada here, if any client approach me, my price is btw 2-3m. Some will say is this guy crazy, my neighbour did his own for 300k. On the part of geophysical Survey, being a geologist doesn't mean you are good. The best geologist are the one that have seen the most rocks. The best geologist is not someone with 1st class but someone with high field experience.

seems we ve discussed before about your Borehole before. Borehole drilling is a difficult task. We have lot of artesian calling themselves borehole drillers. Most of these people are illiterates and doesn't have the technicality to deliver.

I always advise people not to consult a driller for Borehole works, a Hydrogeologist or geophysicist is the right person. You also need to know that most Geoscientists are not practising, a larger percentage are in the banking sector so one just have to know who he is dealing with before giving out job.

Anything drilling is a very difficult job, 100% success is not always guaranteed.

The image I uploaded is for a hotel at ofada, we did it this January. The hotel already suffers 2 collapsed boreholes before we were called in.
