News carried that an earth tremor occurred in Kaduna, making inhabitants of the area panic. These occurrence was also felt in Shaki, Ibadan and some other parts of the Basement Complex (Areas with Igneous and Metamorphic rocks) of Nigeria.

Most Nigeria Geologists believe that the country is on a stable zone. However, recent studies have shown that Nigeria is located between a stable craton at its west, the Cameroon volcanics to its East, the Atlantic Ocean to the South and the Younger Granites to the North in Niger (although we have some of its portion around the Jos-Plateau, down to Birin-Kudu in Jigawa state).

Out of all the West African state only Ghana rest comfortably on a Craton (stable part of crust) called the West Africa craton. Nigeria is located to its Eastern part.

It is believed that the pan-African orogeny is the last orogenic process that affected the whole landmass of Africa. Just some days ago, earthquake was also recorded in Tanzania. This means that Africa may not be stable after all.

I put forward the following hypothesis to counter the proposition that Nigeria is stable:

1. The Benue Trough is known to have be formed during the Santonian. It is the third arm of the a rift system, although it is a failed one unlike the one around Egypt. This Olade termed the Aulacogen. If not for its failure during the separation of South America from Africa and the opening of the Atlantic ocean, Africa would have been divided into several minor plates. Therefore, a reactivation of the Benue Trough might cause several earthquakes. A recent study I carried out showed that the some schist areas of Nigeria (where Kaduna is located) is highly jointed (for example the Owo schist area) and that many of the joints are reacivated (Manuscript submitted for publication). This shows that there is a possibility of reactivation through tectonism.

2. The reactivation of the Cameroun volcanoes is potent threat to our country. If the volcanoes are reactivated, its impact will be felt in Nigeria. These earthquake might be a possible signal to the rejuvenation of these volcanoes. Volcanologists should set out to study them.

3. The Mid Oceanic Ridge (MOR) in the Atlantic Ocean should continually be studied. It might give us a clue to what is happening.

4. Incessant drilling of boreholes for water penerating these fault and fracture zones can cause their reactivation. Government and policy makers should endeavour to enact a law that will stop incessant borehole drilling. However, before this can be done, efficient public water must be put in place such that every house is connected to a main source of water supply.

Has the leacheates reach the groundwater ?

What is the areal extent the leacheates has spread?

Is there any medium for the leacheates to be transported to other areas at a reasonable distance from the dumpsite.?

Are the domestic water being used by people free from contamination?

Leacheates are the liquid extracted from the materials from the dumpsite



After this reconnaissance survey, then we set out for full field work. It wasn't fun mehn.

I keep wondering about the health condition of this people, the water in the channel is very thick with a bad odor and this is being transported to other areas who might not even be aware of a site like that.

The kings palace is not far from there and they can't seem to stop the illicit act. Even the church h too can't help the situation.

Here is a project I carried out on a dumpsite in Laka area, Ogbomoso.

The place is not only a dumpsite, it's also like a defeacating ground to almost all the people in the area. The government tried to stop them by even constructing several public toilets at dat site but still, the people won't use the toilet but defecate openly.

You need to know that this area is in the heart of the town as residential building and churches are all surrounding it.

I recently had an exploration tour to Abeokuta, Ogun state precisely at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, in one of their student densely populated area. It was a mission to secure a viable point and to drill a domestic borehole for one of the private hostels in the area. It was a project that involved a team of 4. My experience during the time I spent in the area reflected to me that the environment may be too porous.


The students have just been sent home for a compulsory mid-semester break due to the recent students’ protest over incessant robbery attacks on their hostels. The Recent story about the robbery attack on the various private hostels in some of these locations leading to various rape stories and other theft acts is disheartening. The university is known to have more population of its students living off the campus this led to the increase in the density of student population in places such as Camp, Oluwo, Harmony Estate, Isolu and others, probably this contributed to the porosity of those locations. Our team tried to relate our experience within the short time with the antecedent and felt well to share a short article on it, not to attack or condemn anyone but to see to it that the concerned stakeholders within the system rise to their responsibilities in order to ensure that students are well protected and their wellbeing is ascertained to a very good extent.


The following are my thoughts; when it comes to security issues in a society, everyone is a stakeholder including the students, indigenes, university authority, student union government (if any) and even visitors like me. I would suggest that the University authority take the chief part in coordinating things to work out for the security and wellbeing of students in those areas. The students are believed to be the properties of the university in as much as they are registered students of the institution so; to some extent, the university should jerk up in their responsibility of ensuring adequate security in those areas. This may not involve the university putting in bogus financial budget but a simple concern may go a long way. It is worthy of note that the students are living in those places because the university is sited close to those locations; so the university system should also employ ways of seeing that one of the key factors of her system (i. e. the students) is well. If the university cannot fully accommodate its students within the wall of the campus which is the usual for most campuses within Nigeria, the University can enter into a partnership with the developers, site owners or landlords, indigenes of the locations as it may be towards ensuring security of the area. Each building in those locations can be levied towards getting guards (night and day) or putting a dependable security system into place. The students would also be enjoined to be responsible factors towards ensuring their security. The developers would be encouraged to also cooperate with other stakeholders in the system.


In other ways, other measures can be employed but the utmost is that the security of the lives of the students and their properties should be well addressed. From my personal experience and previous storylines, Funaabites are not known for violence just as I read from one of the speeches of the vice chancellor of the University Prof. Olusola Oyewole in the Punch Newspaper, he said, “Our students are naturally peaceful. They are not used to this type of violence.” (http://punchng.com/funaab-crisis-beyond-students-protest/). Comparatively, a gentle and easy going mule may turn to be aggressive especially when pushed to the wall. This may also be the story of the Funabites. Although it was alleged that there are other factors hinging to the strike, but it is good that actions be taken promptly in order to ensure that the students are restored back to the classrooms and save their destinies from rusting. These set of young bright mind are the future of our dear nation.

Yea, msogunro's site has little or no overburden like 2m from the surface. So basically he should be drilling through rocks right from the surface.

Well you need to know that drilling through rocks is sweeter than drilling through sediments.

@all talking about the double wall, that part of his is made up of lateritic/sandy material.... If you see the profile from the pit you will understand beta. I think that is why the bricklayers have to double the wall and also put aggregates under. Though the wall don't have to go all dat high, just 3-5 coaches is OK and also making sure it is filled with concrete. Another way is to use @fastshipping style.
