Election rigging is the act of dishonestly organizing an election to get a particular result¹. It is an electoral fraud and an interference with the election process. Election rigging can take many forms, such as ballot stuffing, vote buying, intimidation, violence, hacking or manipulation of electronic voting systems. Election rigging can flip state, congressional and even presidential elections³. Election rigging is not only a crime against democracy, but also a sin against God. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all human affairs and that He appoints authorities for His purposes (Romans 13:1-2). God also commands His people to respect and obey those authorities (Romans 13:5-7). Therefore, when someone rigs an election, they are rebelling against God's will and dishonoring His authority. Election rigging also violates the second greatest commandment: to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39). By rigging an election, you are depriving your fellow citizens of their right to choose their leaders and have a say in their governance. You are also harming the common good by undermining trust in the electoral system and creating division and conflict among people. You are not loving your neighbor as yourself, but rather exploiting them for your own selfish gain. Election rigging is a serious sin that has grave consequences for individuals and nations. The Bible warns that God will judge those who pervert justice and oppress the poor (Proverbs 17:15; Isaiah 10:1-4). The Bible also gives examples of how God punished nations that corrupted their elections or rebelled against His appointed rulers (2 Kings 9:30-37; Daniel 5:1-31). Election rigging can bring God's wrath upon a nation and invite His curse instead of His blessing. As Christians, we have a responsibility to uphold justice and righteousness in our society. We should pray for our leaders and for free and fair elections (1 Timothy 2:1-4). We should also participate in the electoral process with honesty and integrity, respecting the will of the people and the rule of law. We should not be tempted by greed or power to manipulate or cheat in elections. We should remember that God sees everything we do and that we will have to give an account to Him on the day of judgment (Hebrews 4:13; Revelation 20:12). Election rigging is a sin that dishonors God, harms our neighbors and invites God's judgment. Let us repent of this sin if we have committed it or been complicit in it. Let us seek God's forgiveness and grace through Jesus Christ who died for our sins and rose again for our justification (Romans 4:25). Let us also seek reconciliation with those whom we have wronged or offended by our actions or words. And let us strive to live as citizens of heaven who seek God's kingdom and righteousness above all else (Philippians 3:20; Matthew 6:33). ``` (1) Definition of election rigging(n) | New Word Suggestion | Collins .... https://www.collinsdictionary.com/submission/3073/election+rigging(n) Accessed 05/03/2023. Politics is a divisive topic in our society, especially among Christians. Some Christians believe that they should avoid politics altogether, while others think that they have a duty to influence the political sphere according to their faith. How should Christians approach politics in a way that honors God and serves their neighbors? The relationship between Christianity and politics is not simple or straightforward. It has been a source of disagreement throughout the history of Christianity, as well as in modern times between different Christian groups¹. However, there are some guiding principles that can help Christians navigate this complex issue with wisdom and grace. First, Christians should remember their most primary citizenship. As followers of Jesus Christ, they belong to the kingdom of God, which transcends any earthly nation or state. Their ultimate allegiance is to God and his will, not to any human authority or ideology². This does not mean that Christians should ignore or disobey their earthly governments, but rather that they should seek to obey God first and foremost in everything they do. Second, Christians should choose to be influenced by theology over ideology. Theology is the study of God and his revelation in Scripture, while ideology is a system of ideas and beliefs that shapes one's worldview and actions. Ideology can be helpful or harmful depending on how it aligns with biblical truth. However, ideology can also become idolatrous when it replaces or distorts theology as the basis for one's faith and practice². Christians should always test their political views against the Word of God and be willing to change them if they are found wanting. Third, Christians should prioritize Christian witness over political power. Political power can be used for good or evil purposes depending on who wields it and how they use it. However, political power can also corrupt those who seek it or possess it by tempting them to compromise their integrity or values for the sake of gaining or maintaining influence². Christians should not seek political power for its own sake, but rather use it as a means to serve others and advance God's kingdom. Moreover, Christians should not rely on political power as their main tool for transforming society; rather they should rely on the gospel of Jesus Christ which has the power to change hearts and minds. Fourth, Christians should choose influence over susceptibility. Influence is the ability to affect others positively by one's words and actions; susceptibility is the tendency to be affected negatively by others' words and actions². Christians should seek to influence others for Christ by being salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16), by speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), by doing good works (Titus 3: , by praying for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-4), by promoting peace and justice (Micah 6: , etc. At the same time,Christians should resist being susceptible to others' influence when it contradicts God's will or harms their faith; they should guard their hearts (Proverbs 4:23), renew their minds (Romans 12:2), discern spirits (1 John 4:1), test everything (1 Thessalonians 5:21), etc. Fifth, Christians should trust in God instead of giving into panic. Politics can often cause fear, anxiety, anger, frustration or despair among people depending on how things are going or what outcomes are expected². However, Christians have a different perspective than those who do not know God; they have hope because they know that God is sovereign over all things and that he works all things together for good for those who love him (Romans 8:28). Therefore, Christians do not need to panic when things seem bad or uncertain; rather they need to trust in God who holds all things in his hands and who will accomplish his purposes in his time and his way (Psalm 46). In conclusion, politics and Christianity are not incompatible or irrelevant to each other; rather they are interrelated and important aspects of life that require careful consideration and faithful engagement. Christians can participate in politics without compromising their faith if they follow these five principles: remembering their most primary citizenship, choosing theology over ideology, prioritizing Christian witness over political power, choosing influence over susceptibility, and trusting in God instead of giving into panic. By doing so, Christians can honor God, serve their neighbors, and make a positive difference in this world (1) Christianity and politics - Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_and_politics Accessed 05/03/2023. Nigeria, Africa's most populous and largest economy, has witnessed a historic presidential election on 25 February 2023. The election was marked by high stakes, fierce competition, and widespread challenges. The incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress (APC), was constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in office. His party nominated Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and a influential political figure, as its flagbearer. Tinubu faced off against Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a former vice president and a wealthy businessman who had contested unsuccessfully three times before. The election campaign was dominated by issues such as economic recession, rising inflation, unemployment, corruption, insecurity, and ethnic tensions. Both candidates promised to revive the economy, fight corruption, improve security, and foster national unity. They also appealed to various regional and religious constituencies to secure their votes. The election day was marred by logistical problems, violence, and allegations of fraud. Some polling stations opened late or ran out of ballot papers. Some voters were intimidated or attacked by thugs or security forces. Some results were disputed or annulled by electoral officials or courts. Despite these challenges, Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu the winner of the election on 28 February 2023². According to INEC⁴, Tinubu polled a total of 8,794,726 votes (51.4%) to defeat Abubakar who scored 6,984,520 votes (40.8%). Tinubu won in 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while Abubakar won in 15 states². Tinubu met the constitutional requirement of getting a majority of the vote and over 25% of the votes in two-thirds of the 36 states and FCT³. Tinubu's victory was hailed by his supporters as a historic achievement for Nigeria's democracy and development. They praised him for his track record as a visionary leader who transformed Lagos into a modern megacity and an economic hub¹. They also expressed hope that he would replicate his success at the national level and address Nigeria's pressing problems. Abubakar's defeat was met with disappointment and anger by his followers who rejected the outcome as rigged and unfair. They accused INEC of colluding with APC to manipulate the results in favor of Tinubu⁵. They also alleged that some security agencies and regional leaders influenced voters through intimidation or inducement⁵. They vowed to challenge Tinubu's victory in court and demand a rerun. The international community congratulated Nigeria for conducting a peaceful and credible election despite the difficulties⁵. They urged both candidates to respect the will of Nigerians and accept the result or seek legal redress if they have grievances⁵. They also called on all Nigerians to remain calm and peaceful during this critical period. Nigeria's 2023 presidential election has been described as one of its most hotly contested since its return to civilian rule in 1999⁵. It has also been seen as a test for its democracy and stability amid turbulent times. The outcome has revealed both the strengths and weaknesses of Nigeria's electoral system and political culture. It has also raised hopes and fears for its future prospects.
