attackgat: You better google the Arewa statement again because the Arewa youths urged the federal govt to grant Igbos a referendum and that the quit notice was part of the process of helping Igbos get referendum
As for following a political process to get a referendum, the Biafran agitators will not go through this process, not just because Nigeria was created via an illegal colonial process, but also because it is a waste of time.
Even if Igbos some how got all its political representatives to suppport the idea of a referendum, they would still have to go back to the Nigerian national assembly to move a motion which just the Nw has enough votes to stop
Even if the entire Southern Nigeria reps wanted referendum made part of the constitution, just the NW and NE have enough votes to stop it. The Nigerian national assembly has already been rigged in such a way that the NW abd NE have enough bloc votes to stop any bill, this why restructuring will never be possible in Nigeria.
So a political process is a waste of time nobody is going to indulge in If Biafra agitators do not want to go through the process of getting a referendum, and they call it a waste of time, then who would end up as the loser? Do you think it is the state authorities or the agitators? Na di agitators go wait taya! And there is no need to rig anything! Have you chaps ever heard of lobbying and forming alliances to get the buy-in or support of others, for your cause?? I know that it is an alien concept to you guys. You prefer belligerence and bellicosity. However, the North and SW have mastered this art. That is why you see their bills sailing effortlessly through the 1st, 2nd and 3rd readings in the House of Assembly. Before presenting any bill, they would have done a lot of groundwork behind the scenes, to appeal to those who may hold a contrary view in order to get as many people as possible, to see things from their perspective. In the US, UK etc, lobbying is even big business and it is an entrenched fact of their political life. And it also takes place in Nigeria. That is how someone like Saraki could emerge the Senate leader, even though the odds were stacked against him at the onset. But you chaps do not want to learn, so why should anyone waste his time? |

So at least Scotlabd agreed to be part of them
The Igbo nation never agreed to be part of any union of Nigeria. Like most ethic groups, we were forced into an illegal colonial contraption called Nigeria against our will.
This why it is not necessary for us to do what Scotland did.
The basis of us asking the Nigerian state for a referendum is that we never gave our consent to be part of Nigeria in the first place and we now wish to formally withdraw from the British colonial arrangement called Nigeria which we were unfortunate to find ourselves in Well since you never gave your consent to become part of Nigeria, why ask Nigeria to give you a referendum that you never gave them powers to conduct, in the first place? PrecisionFx: Edo state was NEVER A PART OF BIAFRA.
Itshekiri were in the mid west n were not a part of biafra.
""an Igbo man, or an Igbo-dominated""
It's foolhardy to believe that they would want to remain with nigeria n entrust their entire destiny in a Yoruba n Hausa dominated nation after the Igbos in SE n SS are gone abi. . The first correct thing you ever said in a long while was that Edo & Itsekiri were never part of Biafra. And I still do not see them consenting to become part of your proposed republic, now or in the nearest future. The Bini/Edo/Itsekiri people I know, will never allow that to happen! Even if Nigeria breaks up today, they would never join your Biafra. So what was the reason for your earlier post where you claimed that they were having meetings with your members??! Innomach: Igbos have leaders and representatives representing them. Even though we might disagree or dislike them because of their personalities or the process that brought them to the leadership level, the fact still remains that they are constitutionally recognized to represent their people. Anybody or group of persons cannot rise out of the blues claiming to represent the Igbos and start giving ultimatum to constituted authorities on what they want or death. If that is left unchecked, several other group and persons would come up with their own demands, thereby taking us to state of anarchy. I hope that is not what you want.
The solution is simple! If IPOB/Nnamdi Kanu think they represent the majority of Ndi Igbo, let them come up for elections, matching the present leaders tackle for tackle, man to man until they succeed in pushing forward their own candidates who share same ideology. It is only then that IPOB can truly claim to represent the people. Anything outside that is suicidal because the Nigerian government is going to treat them as miscreants and criminals, use them for shooting practice and nothing will happen. And if you keep consoling yourselves that the world is watching, you may just be living a life of fantasy because the world doesn't care about you. You guys have to read and understand international politics to learn that you are just on your own. The least they can do is sending relief items to the injured and displaced victims of war.

dane15: I keep asking myself what happened to this NK? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=mlKqSJeHgRo&app=desktop
This NK had the opportunity to write his name in the history books with the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela through the use of a focused, refined, calculated and strategic approach.
I am not a Biafran and I really would love Igbos to continue in Nigeria but if they wish to leave, they need to start seeing Biafra as a project and not a task. A project is long term in nature and strategic. They need to start developing LEADERS, a thing which is enormously lacking among the touts and hooligans chanting Biafra everyday.
They say the average Igbo man does not have the patience to think strategically but just wants self gratification and wants things NOW regardless of the cost but I think it is not true. If an Igbo man can start a business from wheel barrow and grow it to a Shopping Mall in ten years, that is strategic thinking.
I believe there are people in the North, South, East and West who are slightly sympathetic to to the cause but the name calling and crude approach is a No, no for them.
On the issue of the UN or US support, US benefits whenever there is civil unrest in a Oil producing country. Production will reduce and Crude Oil price will increase, benefiting the US as they will make more money from their export. Military Hardware producing factories will employ more people because of increased demand still benefiting the US. It will not be in their interest for a war to stop if it starts, God forbid. All the US will do is to advise Biafra Leader and the Nigerian President to dialogue. Just consider that the war in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria have not really ended.
If you have seen the movie 300, you will understand that Leonidas' military achievements against the Persians was because of his geographical advantage and training. An average Spartan is trained for war almost from birth. When I see those saying that IPOB will defeat the NA in battle I just weep. It can never end well. Ojukwu had the privilege of being in the army and therefore has an head start over NK in case of any war outbreak. Even at that, it ended in a massacre.
Mandela and Gandhi proved that not every noble cause must be achieved by bloodshed. Wisdom will always defeat strength 1 million times.
There is still time for NK to become another Gandhi or Mandela but he has to start by: 1. Calling the criminals who have hijacked the IPOB cause for personal greed to stop their provocative actions. 2. Roll out a strategic plan for Biafra Actualization through doing a proper SWOT Analysis. 3. Since he has the people on his side, any Leader he endorses will likely win any election. He should work towards sweeping all the 2019 political seats from the LG to the National level. (This will kill the excuse of our leaders are sabotaging our efforts). 4. Biafran representatives should continue to push for constitution amendment for both restructuring or secession depending on whichever matures first based on the circumstances at the time. 5. He should continue to dialogue with influencers from the North, West, South and Middle belt while using 2019-2023 to sell the Biafran proposal and prototype to Igbos still on the fence through good governance, innovation, creativity and financial integrity. He should change Biafra from just a map to an ideology.
I believe with the above, the peaceful actualization of Biafran will be a step closer.

Why should secession mean war in Africa? Did Zik and others have to fight a war with Britain before Nigeria got its independence? Why cant you question why Britain can grant Scotland referendum but Africa is still using war where they should use referendum? Why is it that we never see the Army of other countries unless there is war but your Nigerian Army is out extorting money everywhere and commiting human rights abuses? How can you equate properties and investment to freedom? Dont you know that international law protects investments wherever they might be? This cave man reasoning is terrible. If other tribes are not interested in independence, all well and good, let them continue with Nigeria. What is most important for me as an Igbo man is that the Igbo nation becomes independent and manages its self. There is nothing greater than freedom, it is greater than Gold or money, even life. So keep congratulating Buhari for using brute military force on unarmed defenceless people but know this, Nigeria is on the wrong track heading nowhere The motion for referendum to decide the question of Scottish independence, was moved by Nicola Sturgeon a Scottish parliamentarian. Section 30 of the Scotland Act 1998 in the United Kingdom and Scottish parliaments, gives full legal backing to allow a single question referendum on Scottish independence, to be held before the end of 2014. The order puts beyond doubt that the Scottish parliament, can legislate for the referendum. Unlike IPOB supporters that want others who have nothing to do with their proposed republic, to dash them referendum, it was the Scottish people that put together the political machinery for it, and executed it. After they had followed due process by doing their homework and groundwork politically, the rest of Britain could now accede to it. |

So what exactly is the need for Python dance in an area that is a lot more peaceful without any breakdown of law and other apart from peeps exercising their freedom of association.
As for the Biafra struggle, I'm not a fan of Nnamdi but I am sympathetic to his cause. Nigeria as a country is very flawed. This is a country that doing things the right way gets you nowhere.

I may not be in 100 percent support of Nnamdi's MO but his MO is the only language Nigeria Understands Why are you talking about Kogi and Benue? Where were you in 2015, when the army launched Operation Awase to flush out militants from the Lagos creeks who were breaking pipelines in the region? They even shelled the area with the help of the Airforce. Did residents of Ikorodu and Arepo hurl stones, bottles and missiles at the army? No. The army came in, conducted their operations and left peacefully. In March 2017, the army conducted Operation Ex Harbin Kunama II specifically in Southern Kaduna, Birnin Gwari, Kyambana Forest and some volatile areas in Plateau State, Lame Burra Forest in Bauchi and Falgore Forest in Kano State. no record of assaults or skirmishes were recorded, to the best of my knowledge. Operation Lafiya Dole also took place in the North, which entailed massive movement of personnel and military hardware across the region, but nobody confronted the army and told them not to pass a certain area. Why the one in the SE ended in a skirmish is what needs to be investigated. Your IPOB chaps unwittingly turned themselves into combatants by hurling stones, missiles bottles etc, at the army and things escalated from there. |

I believe you are very educated, try and weigh options because the way this thing is going, I do not think it will end in our favour. Gbam!! You hit the nail on the head! Do you know how long it takes before UN or any other international body intervenes in a country? Even after their intervention, it can take years to reach a negotiated settlement. And how important is the SE in the scheme of UN's priorities? Have they finished attending to the protracted crises in other parts of the world, that have lingered for several years? When the Liberian crises started years ago, how long did it take for UN to respond? Wasn't it the West African countries that had to raise ECOMOG to quell the war & crises in that country? Where were UN forces, before ECOMOG went in? Even America that established Liberia, did not send an army contingent into Liberia when the crises started. It was almost 2 years after the war started, that ECOMOG went in there to impose a ceasefire. The US preferred to focus on Iraq and get Saddam Hussein out of the way, because their strategic interest in that zone was being threatened by Saddam's antics, remember? In August 1990, without any prospect for intervention by the United States or the United Nations, ECOMOG arrived in Monrovia to separate the warring factions and to stop the bloodshed.
The West African countries justified their intervention on the grounds that it was no longer an internal conflict since thousands of their own nationals were trapped in Liberia, and tens of thousands of refugees had fled to neighboring countries. The ECOMOG mandate was to impose a cease-fire, help form an interim government and hold elections within 12 months. Unfortunately, with NPFL attacks continuing, there was no peace to keep, and ECOMOG was thrust into combat to push the NPFL out of Monrovia.
There has been much speculation about the ulterior motives of the participating states for intervening in Liberia. Some have accused Nigeria of attempting to support the Doe government, since Doe and Nigeria's President Babangida were allies; others contend that Nigeria was striving to act like the regional superpower that it aspires to be. Others believe that the motivation was a genuine fear of regional destabilization, since dissidents from the Gambia, Ghana and Sierra Leone, most of whom were trained together with the NPFL in Libya, were known to be working with the NPFL.
Still others contend that the intervention was due to the NPFL's treatment of the West African nationals living in Liberia; thousands of Nigerians, Guineans and Ghanaians were effectively held hostage in Monrovia, and hundreds were later killed. Another theory is that the enormous flow of refugees into the neighboring countries compelled them to act.
In any event, none of the participating countries was known for its respect for human rights and democratic principles. As The Washington Post commented in August 1990 when the decision to form ECOMOG was announced, the participating states all had one thing in common: "All are ruled with a strong arm by military or civilian dictators and have little experience with democracy."
Regardless of its motivations, ECOMOG accomplished certain concrete objectives between August and November: it established a semblance of order and peace in the battered city, which allowed international humanitarian groups to return to Liberia; it confined to their barracks the AFL and another rebel group, the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL), led by Prince Johnson;15 it enabled the Interim Government of National Unity (IGNU), headed by Amos Sawyer, to be installed; and it obtained a cease-fire.
One would be hard-pressed to visit Monrovia without hearing, time and again, "Thank God for ECOMOG." The sentiments of many Monrovia residents were summarized by a Liberian medical worker who said: "ECOMOG was our savior; it was a salvation. ECOMOG saved the population of Monrovia. They avoided fighting, but were pushed into a corner. We feel sorry for them; they have no cause to die here for this stupid, senseless war. https://www.hrw.org/reports/1993/liberia/#2 ECOMOG had already established the ceasefire before the UN eventually stepped into the country, a few years later in 2003. Don't forget that the war started between Sergeant Doe and Charles Taylor, in 1989, o! After ECOWAS brokered a peace agreement in Cotonou, Benin, in 1993, the Security Council established the United Nations Observer Mission in Liberia (UNOMIL). reality1010: I v come again to put u through. Some of u Nairaland ppl learn to destroy urselves.U r quick to copy and paste links from internet thinking everyone is daft to eat up those thrash that r not peer reveiwed.Ur problem is that u can not do better logical analysis and put ur arguement in the context of ur discussion. U said UN ICJ ruling on Bakassi is a binding case to why Nigeria must cede Bakassi without refering to the issue of referendum and plebiscite which is not in the constitution.Do u know that countries reject ICJ ruling when it is not in conformity with their political system?Even ICJ knows that one of its major shortcomings is that its rulings must be considered in a political context.Check US vs Nicargua and others.Alot of us have questioned the rationale behind Nigeria ceding of bakassi without a referendum or plebiscite which is very very bad.As i educate u experts wie on international studies is not happy with it. Another case from u is on the Sudanese. You said they fought war for yrs and then brokered agreement with a referendum and the UN came in to conduct it.Pls is it how it happened? So u expect Biafrans to fight war for so many years and then Nigeria and Biafra will broker peace for referendum? As at the 2005 u mentioned, how come there was no referendum in the Sudanese constitution all the years they v been fighting from 1959?Why did it take 46years to insert it just few months to independence? What is it that persuaded Sudanese govt to do so even at a short time?Let me check u up,tell me,is it d decision of the President, or the country as a whole or pressure from outside that was instrumental to the cease fire and referendum in the Sudan/South Sudan case? Why would Sudanese govt accept it and include it?What really made d Sudanes govt to v a rethink for such inclusion? How come it was quickly arranged into South Sudan's law after they were not even a country? Sorry im taking u into international logic. So u can decieve ppl on Nairaland that Sudan and South Sudan agreed on their own for cease fire and inclusion of referendum? What about the roles of international communities and the UN in forcing them to peace and the threat on Bashir president of Sudan?Pls when u read u do proper analysis and not swallowing every word. You v forgotten ur position of arguement so soon, how come? All i want u to learn is at what time referendum was considered for them? What were the factors surrendering it?Al Bashir on his own would not v allowed referendum up to this time im key boarding u.So how come he accepted?Let me give u the answer:pressure from outside.Same pressure on Nigeria to revert to civilian rule in 1999.Same pressure for the Apartheid govt to dismantle apartheid and release Mandela. All these pressures come with civil disobedience, actions and reactions. Oga, you want to continue spinning your illogical web of questions, abi? Okay, continue to recycle your fallacious arguments. I have tried to share the truth with you, but you prefer to wallow in deceit. I cannot help you any further, if you do not free your mind! Who are the faceless groups that will put pressure on govt for you, if you do not do your homework properly? At what point, does the UN or other world bodies step in to broker peace in a situation, or start to exert pressure on a govt? How many years did it take to dismantle apartheid in South Africa, even after international pressure had been exerted on Botha's administration?? Don't forget that countries are only motivated to respond to you, based on their own self-interest, or political focus. You think you would snap your fingers, and foreign countries and international organisations will just jump up to do your bidding and put pressure on federal government? I laugh in Greek! If all it takes to guarantee a referendum is civil disobedience and protests, then why do wars occur and why do they last for so long? Most of the time, civil disobedience option is only chosen, after the parties involved have exhausted all due legal & political processes, to get their needs met. Your people have NOT embarked on one political step, to get their new republic (e.g. have they placed their demands before the National Assembly, so it can even be debated and voted upon?) You are one of those that cannot recognise the truth, but you just want to keep going round in circles, for the fun of it. Until you do your research and your homework, I will not even dignify any of your posts with a response. |
