Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Hakeem Odumosu has denied reports that he has been appointed as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Reports were rife on Tuesday that President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Odumosu as the substantive Chairman of EFCC. The appointment according to the reports is subject to his confirmation by the Senate. However, Odumosu in a statement obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday night debunked the news. He said the information must have emanated from mischief makers and should be totally disregarded. Tinubu has suspended indefinitely the former chairman of the anti-corruption body, AbdulRasheed Bawa on Wednesday, June 14. Spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, Dino Melaye has said nobody should take former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose serious over claims that the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar rejected the one term offer presented to him for peace to reign in PDP. Melaye noted that anyone who knew the antecedents of Fayose would not take him serious. Recall that Fayose while appearing as a guest on ARISE TV on March 2 revealed that, Atiku rejected the offer of one term in office to get the G5 governors’ support. “I was invited by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar to a hotel in Lagos. I told him four things, that there were four demands they made of you. One, you are seventy-six as of last year. The G-5 said, you are already a candidate, you can’t abort a child that has been given birth to. “But let us go back and tell the Southerners that you will spend four years so that it would not look like it will be eight to eight years back to back for the North because Buhari is leaving and he is representing the North irrespective of the party. “They told his excellency to make his official announcement, not that he should hand it over to any member of the G-5. That you are going to spend four years and at that time you will be 80 years, all the people surrounding him disagree, that they can’t say such, when he becomes President he will say it, who does that? Atiku lost the G5 governors’ states to APC’s Bola Tinubu who won three and Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi won two states. However, Melaye has come out to puncture Fayose’s claim. Speaking in an interview with Punch, Melaye said Nigerians should never take Fayose serious. He stated that it was impossible for Fayose to sit in front of Atiku and say the G5 governors were offering him one term before they can suppport him He said Nigerians should ask Fayose where he met Atiku and what was Atiku’s response. ‘Take anything from Fayose seriously at your own peril. Where did he sit down with Atiku to offer Atiku one term? Can Ayo Fayose sit in front of Atiku and say we are offering you one term? And what was Atiku’s response? Melaye added that Fayose was only trying to curry favour from the APC https://newsday.com.ng/pdp-crisis-dont-take-fayose-serious-dino-melaye/ |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) G5 Governors appear to have been divided over who to support in the February 25 presidential election between Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party(LP). Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuayi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) are not with their party’s flagbearer, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on account of the refusal of the PDP national chairman, Dr.Iyorchia Ayu to quit his office despite promising to leave in the event of the emergence of a northerner as a presidential candidate. The governors had vowed not to campaign for Atiku, hinting that they would reveal the presidential candidate they would support, few weeks to the February 25 presidential poll ALSO READ: PDP crisis: G5 meets in London again Although the five governors have agreed among themselves to support a presidential candidate from the South, they are, however divided over who support between the two leading candidates from the South. While Wike is said to be leaning towards Tinubu, Ortom and Makinde have indicated their preference for Obi. Confirming this development, the immediate past Deputy National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Diran Odeyemi said Makinde may have a soft spot for Obi but expressed doubts that he would ever make his stand public. “A lot of political games are going on. In Oyo State, the deputy governor, Bayo Lawal, has been attending events of the Atiku campaign organisation even though his boss is a member of G-5. “Seyi (Makinde) is not ready to lose his re-election bid and is therefore keeping his choice close to his chest. He may have instructed his foot soldiers on what to do but he would be wise enough to go with the crowd in the end. There are, however, strong indications that Obi may be favoured by the group. To arrive at a consensus and fashion a strategy for the 2023 presidential election, the five governors on Monday travelled to London in continuation of their meeting. With the governors trip to London, the meeting between the Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) and governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal and Ortom could not hold. https://newsday.com.ng/tinubu-obi-divide-g5-governors-as-group-meets-in-london-again/ |
The Lagos State Government has finally succumbed to the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria which allows students to wear Hijab to school, if they so desire. Use of Hijab in public schools had become a controversy in the state leading to the Muslim Students Society taking the matter to court where they eventually got victory at the nation’s highest court. The state government, on Monday, 5 December 2022 sets machinery in motion to implement the judgment of the Supreme Court. A memo to this effect signed by the state Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola was released on Monday, 5 December 2022. The memo stated that while the state Government will soon release a comprehensive guideline on the use of Hijab in the state public schools, it directed all accounting officers not only to comply with the ruling, they must also give it the widest publicity. The government also warned that all schools in the state that the ruling is binding on them, noting that as a law-abiding institution, it will implement the ruling of the court. The supreme court had in its judgment on June 17 affirmed the rights of Muslim female students in Lagos state to wear hijab to school. In October 2014, a Lagos high court ruled against the wearing of hijab in schools, a decision that was overturned by an appellate court in July 2016. Delivering judgment, five out of a seven-member panel of the apex court held that banning the use of hijab is discriminatory. “No student should be discriminated against in any form on the basis of religion.” The Lagos state government had banned the use of hijab on the premise that it was not part of the approved school uniform for students. https://newsday.com.ng/finally-lagos-succumbs-to-supreme-court-ruling-approves-use-of-hijabs-in-schools/

Ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday harvested tens of thousands of defectors from opposition political parties in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, in what observers say further underlines the popularity of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and his government. The defectors were led by dozens of erstwhile generals in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party, NNPP, African Democratic Congress, among others — all attesting to the impressive performance of the administration in education, healthcare, workers’ welfare, rural-urban infrastructural development, women and youth empowerment, and safety nets for the poor and the vulnerable. The Banquet Hall Ilorin — venue of the event — and its expansive precincts were filled to the brim as the defectors drawn from north, south and central districts of Kwara filed to the hall in a carnivalesque atmosphere. They were received by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq alongside several top government officials and party chieftains such as Kwara APC chairman Sunday Fagbemi; and Director General of the APC Campaign Alhaji Yahaya Seriki; among others. The big fishes among the defectors included former Deputy Speaker Kwara State House of Assembly under PDP Hon. Mathew Okedare; former Commissioner for Tertiary Education under PDP Barrister Abdullahi Alikinla; former Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Engr Musa Yeketi; Personal Assistant to the former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed on Political (PAPOL) Alhaji Hassan Gegele; PDP Women Leader in Ifelodun LG Adenike Ayilara; former Special Assistant to Senator Bukola Saraki on Domestic Hon. Bolakale Ajanaku; Otunba Olabode Oyedepo popularly called Bode Deway; SDP House of Assembly aspirant from Offa Mr. Ahmed Akorede; Hon. Dolapo Hamza; Hon. Ahmad Solagberu; PDP House of Rep aspirant for Asa/Ilorin West Hon. Ahmed Bayero; YPP Vice Chairman in Asa Hamzat Dolapo; Abu Jimoh Plumber; Bola Afolayan from Ekiti LG; and Alhaji Abdullahi Sarumi, among others. Officially welcoming the defectors, AbdulRazaq congratulated the new members of APC for their decision and assured the decampees of fairness and equal treatment. “We welcome all the decampees and appreciate you for your conviction and your trust in our party. We are going to work together to achieve success. We will treat you all fairly as members of our party. As you can see, PDP is now empty. They only deploy social media to feign popularity,” he said. “They came up with a slogan – ‘O Suwa’ (We are fed up). They are truly shameless for comparing their 16 years to our three and a half years in office. They boast of constructing a fly over bridge at the post office. They are liars. They never told Kwarans that the Federal government funded the project. The same thing applies to Ilesha Baruba – Chikanda road construction and the Airport. We are building huge projects with our own money as an administration while delivering basic amenities to our people, including workers’ welfare. We cannot entrust the future of our state to those who once ruined a bank. They will destroy our state, if we make that mistake. Let them know that you’re not tired of good government and steady spread of infrastructure across the state,” the Governor told the mammoth crowd. https://newsday.com.ng/kwara-apc-welcomes-thousands-of-defectors-from-pdp-sdp-adc-others/

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has clarified his statement in Port Harcourt misunderstood to mean that he and former Rivers State governor Peter Odili were classmates. Obi was in Rivers State on Thursday to commission the Nkpolu-Oroworokwo flyover on the invitation of Governor Nyesom Wike. Obi had said, “Dr. Peter Odili was my Senior Boy in Secondary School. We couldn’t have played football in CKC without Odili. Any day he is not in the match we’ve lost, so we know. I have people in Rivers state that went to school with me, some people nobody have seen people who went to school with them. So we must say this.” Obi’s statement generated a lot of controversies because publicly available records said Mr Odili, governor from 1999 to 2007, was born in 1948 and graduated from high school in 1967. From the record, Odili graduated more than a decade before Mr Obi and barely six years after the Labour politician was born in 1961. Responding to the controversies, Obi in a series of Tweets on Saturday said his comment was “deliberately” taken out of context. “My remarks when I visited Port Harcourt have been wrongly interpreted by some people. The former Governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili and I, are among other prominent Nigerians that schooled in Christ the King College (CKC) Onitsha, and we remain alumni of the school. I did not say that former Governor Odili was my classmate, rather I said that he was a great footballer in my school, and we all cherished and had good memories of his football exploits when we got into the school. I was in CKC from 1973 to 1978 and Dr Peter Odili had graduated before I got into the school. He was such a fabulous footballer whose image still loomed large even in our time, especially considering the fact that my Primary School was very close to CKC The Primary School that I attended, Santa Maria School/Holy Trinity School, were both owned by the same Catholic Church that owned Christ the King College (CKC), Onitsha. In fact, both Primary Schools were feeder schools to CKC,and a large number of pupils who passed through the schools ended up in CKC for secondary education. – PO https://newsday.com.ng/obi-clarifies-statement-on-peter-odili/ |
