The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) ,Oyo State chapter on Sunday attended a press conference organised by a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

The press conference was organised to round off Fani-Kayode’s tour of projects undertaking by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The former minister arrived in Ibadan on Sunday last week .

The presence of the journalists at the press conference signified that the union has forgiven Fani-Kayode.

The union had on Monday, ordered its members to boycott a press conference organised by Fani-Kayode.

Fani-Kayode had insulted a reporter with DailyTrust, Eyo Charles in Calabar, for asking him who was bankrolling his nationwide trips in Cross River two weeks ago.

He poured vituperations on the reporter, disparaging him as “very stupid”.

“I could see from your face before you got here, how stupid you are. Don’t ever talk to me like that. Who do you think you’re talking to? Bankroll who?

“You think I am one of those ones you… from who, when, how? You have a small mind, a very small mind. Don’t judge me by your own standards,” he had said.

His comments had generated widespread criticism from many Nigerians and groups, including the NUJ which described him as “intolerant and unstable”.

The former minister has, however, apologised to the journalist, the NUJ, Daily Trust and any affected parties. In an apology letter sent to the national president of the NUJ, the former minister said he regretted his actions, and promised to have a better relationship with the union.

PoliticsDespite Owing Pensioners, Wike Buys 16 Suvs For Rivers Federal Lawmakers by lekanolas(op): 11:45am On Aug 26, 2020
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has bought 16 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to elected members of the National Assembly from Rivers State.

Three of the Vehicles are for Senators representing the State, while 13 are for members of the House of Representatives from the state .

The purchase of the vehicles comes few days after appeals from retired civil servants for the payment of their four years pension arrears and gratuities owed them by the Wike’s administration.

Lucky Ati, spokesman of the pensioners, in a statement last week, regretted that some of them had not received any kobo from the state government since 2015.

“We have written several letters to Governor Nyesom Wike to no avail,” the pensioners said in the statement made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt.

“The administration preceding Wike enacted the contributory pension without preparations and plans for a smooth take-off; this has caused us untold hardship and even deaths,” they said.

Wike is known for his elitist spending and acquiring expensive luxurious vehicles for the elites in government.

The legislature and the judiciary, the two arms that are meant to checkmate him, have become the biggest beneficiaries of his vehicular gifts.

In December 2017, the governor bought 16 expensive land cruiser SUVs for lawmakers representing the state at the National Assembly.

On 24 July 2019, Wike gave out SUVs to 11 newly sworn-in Magistrates.

On December 28, 2019, the governor also bought expensive SUVs for the 32 members of the state house of assembly a day after they passed the 2020 budget.

PoliticsAPC Accuses Governor Wike Of Plotting To Elevate Wife To A’court Over Seniors by lekanolas(op): 2:25pm On Aug 25, 2020
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of plotting to elevate his wife, Justice Eberechi Wike to the Court of Appeal (CA).

The party said it has uncovered plot by the governor to influence the recommendation of his wife, Justice Wike for a place in the CA.

The party in a statement by by Ogbonna Nwuke said it is worried that if Governor succeeds with his plan, it means Justice Wike will be elevated above her colleagues with seniority in qualification or service.

There are currently 35 Judges serving in Rivers State. Justice Wike, from information, is placed 24th on the ladder of seniority.

“The APC is compelled by a sense of duty and a moral obligation to expose the plot that is being hatched by Governor Wike and his associates to deny senior and qualified Rivers judges of a fair chance of growing beyond the High Court system. We think that such a plan, designed to rob Peter in order to pay Paul by some key members of Wike’s kitchen cabinet is callous, despicable, nepotic, unwarranted and unacceptable.

“Accordingly, we call on well-meaning Rivers people to speak up. As stakeholders, we cannot sit idly by and watch as our democratic institutions are desecrated. The State belongs to all of us. We, therefore, have a duty to defend our institutions against an invasion that is capable of undermining the future of our democracy”

Embattled Islamic cleric, Alfa Saheed Shittu has failed to meet his bail condition.

Shittu who is standing trial for denigrating and defaming another Islamic cleric, Sheikh Alfulanny was granted bail on Thursday by a judge of the Lagos Division of the Lagos High Court.

The judge ordered that Shittu should provide two sureties who must have landed properties in Lagos.

The judge added that the sureties should deposit the original title documents of the assets with the court.

“The sureties shall be resident in Lagos State and shall transmit their land use as evidence of ownership of property in Lagos State and furnish the court with evidence of payment of tax from three years prior to today”, the judge held.

The trial judge while granting Shittu bail also barred him from travelling outside Nigeria pending the determination of the case.

He spent the weekend at the Ikoyi Prison in Lagos, where he is currently being held.

Again, at the start of the new working week on Monday, Shittu was still struggling to find the sureties.

Sources say many people Shittu had approached have turned down his request to be his sureties.

Shittu has denigrated many Islamic scholars in Nigeria and some traditional rulers describing them as hypocrites and liars.

With this development, Shittu is likely to spend Sallah in Ikoyi prison.

PoliticsINEC Counters Abegunde's Claims, Denies Rigging 2016 Ondo Governorship Poll by lekanolas(op): 7:14pm On Jul 07, 2020
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has countered claims by the former Secretary to the Ondo State Government (SSG) , Ifedayo Sunday Abegunde that the 2016 governorship election in Ondo was won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Abegunde popularly known as Abena resigned his appointment as SSG on Monday after accusing Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of maltreating him.

Featuring on a Private Radio personality programme hours after resigning in Akure, Abegunde had claimed that Governor Akerodolu, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost the 2016 governorship election to the PDP candidate, Eyitayo Jegede.

According to him, it was through the powers from him (Abena) and other APC pillars that made INEC declare Akeredolu as governor after he had lost it.

His words: “Akeredolu didn’t win the election in 2016 but we made it possible for him to become governor. We were the pillars behind him and we will not support him again. He will lose this time around”

But INEC said Abegunde’s claims were outrageous, describing them as untrue and baseless.

The commission through his spokesperson in the state said it was impossible for the commission to rig the election in favour of any candidate.

“How can anyone in good conscience make such spurious claims”

Akeredolu polled a total of 224,842 votes to defeat 27 other candidates in the 2016 election.

Akeredolu was followed by Jegede, who polled a total of 150,380 votes while Olusola Alex Oke of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in third place scored a total of 126,889 votes.

Only 584,997 voters were accredited for the election out of the 1,647,973 registered voters. A total of 580,887 votes were cast while 551,272 votes were valid.

TravelAirports Reopening: Ten Things To Do Before You Can Board A Local Flight by lekanolas(op): 2:24pm On Jun 30, 2020
The Federal Government on Monday approved the resumption of domestic flights in major airports of the country.

Before the announcement on Monday, airport staff have been hard at work preparing to welcome back passengers.

Ahead of the opening, Aviation Minister Senator Hadi Sirika visited domestic terminals of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos on Saturday to assess the measures put in place to protect airport staff and travellers.

Here are 10 ten things passengers need to know before they can be allowed to board a plane.

1. People who are planning on travelling should arrive at the airport at least an hour earlier than usual.

2. Only passengers will be allowed inside the terminal buildings and temperature screenings will be conducted by Port Health at all entrances.

3. To ensure proper sanitisation and screening at airport entrances, a number of access points will be closed.

4. Passengers will be required to wear a mask at all times and physical distancing rules will apply throughout the airport. To assist with this, stickers on the floor mark the distance of 1.5m that you should keep from other passengers. Airport benches have been marked to indicate seats that should be left open.

5. Physical distancing rules will also apply when queuing to board an aircraft and boarding will be done in a controlled manner to allow passengers travelling the rear seats to board first.

6. Bag wrapping will now also be compulsory for all check-in luggage.

7. A new feature to look out for is a “Covid-19 essentials” vending machine, which is filled with disposable masks, hand sanitiser gel, wipes and tissues.

8. No more physical contact between airline staff and passengers. Passengers are now to detach their boarding passes themselves and drop inside containers that have been made available.

9. To reduce contact between passengers and airline workers, airports will use robots to do some of the processes that airport officials were doing before.

10. To ensure safety on board, aircraft will be disinfected between flights and a high-efficiency particulate air filter (Hepa) filter, which kills bacteria, will clean the air throughout the flight.

Politics‘I Have Nothing To Fear’, Shehu Sani Replies EFCC by lekanolas(op): 1:02pm On Jun 30, 2020
A former Senator who represented Kaduna Central in the last Senate, Shehu Sani says he has nothing to fear over the allegations of fraud levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Sani was responding to threats by the commission that the bail granted him will be revoke if he fails to appear in court on the next adjourned date.

EFCC is prosecuting Sani for allegedly collecting money in the name of the EFCC’s acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

Sani was said to have collected the sum of USD$25,000.00 (Twenty-five Thousand United States Dollars) from Alhaji Sani Dauda of ASD Motors, Kaduna, under a false pretence that he would use the sum to bribe Magu, to shield Dauda from EFCC’s investigation .

He was arrested on December 30, 2019 but was released on bail after spending four weeks in the custody of the EFCC.

He was admitted to bail in the sum of N10m by Justice Inyan Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

At the resumed hearing on Monday, June 29, Sani’s counsel, A.A. Ibrahim SAN had informed the court that the defendant was not in court because his neighbour just died of COVID-19, following which the Kaduna State Government placed a movement restriction in the area.

Ibrahim pleaded with the court to adjourn the case to enable his client to be physically present in court.

The plea was, however, rejected by the EFCC’s counsel, Abba Mohammed, who noted that one of the witnesses he planned to present in court came from the same Kaduna Sani complained about.

Justice Ekwo granted Ibrahim’s appeal and adjourned the the case till July 6,7,8 and 9, 2020 for continuation of trial.

But, the EFCC in a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale shortly after the judge’s ruling twisted the report and painted a picture that Sani was was avoiding the court.

Sani in response said he has nothing to fear as he had always attend court sittings since the beginning of his trial.

He noted that the commission will lose nothing by being honest and accurately telling the world what transpired in court on Monday since there was no media presence.

He promised to be in court at the next adjourned dates.
