Politics / President Buhari Inherited Road Contractual Liabilities Worth N1.5 Trillion's by leonene(m): 12:39pm On Sep 26, 2016
The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari inherited road contractual liabilities worth N1.5tn, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has said.
Fashola said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday by his Special Adviser, Communications, Mr. Hakeem Bello.
The minister said the ministry inherited 206 roads that were not budgeted for or poorly funded, but added that it had now developed a road map consisting of identifying and prioritising heavy traffic bearing roads for conveying essential goods and services across the country.
He said, “We have to build roads that evacuate our sea and airports; roads that drive our energy for now; roads that go to the tank farms to evacuate fuel from the South to the North; and roads that sustain us, that is roads that bring in our feed stock, cattle and vegetables and livestock from the North down to the South.
“And that is why you see us building from Lagos to Ibadan, to Ilorin, to Jebba to link all the way to Kaduna and Kano, and go on up North. And we are doing the same thing trying to connect River Benue through the Loko-Oweto Bridge and the Second Niger Bridge; Kano-Kaduna, and Kano-Maiduguri. Those are the choices we have made because this is a period of hard choices, trying to do more with less.”
Fashola added, “Those are the choices that we have made; they are not esoteric choices, they are simple and rational choices. All the roads we are working on had been awarded before I got into office by the previous administration – over 206 roads. You don’t have resources to build 206 roads; so, where you put your limited resources is in those areas.
“The total outstanding contractual liabilities are in the region of N1.5tn and this administration is taking them in batches, starting from the critical heavy traffic highways that evacuate goods from ports, fuel from tank farms and move foodstuffs and agro-produce across the country.”
The minister also said Nigeria lost more than 3,000 megawatts of electricity to the activities of vandals in the last six months.
Fashola said this in a presentation titled, ‘Leadership and the Politics of Reforms in Africa: Lessons from Nigeria’ at the Wilson Centre, Washington DC, United States.
The minister added that electricity supply increased by 4,00MW in the last two weeks due to increase in the generating capacity of the hydropower plants occasioned by the repair and maintenance carried out on them in the last one year.
He attributed the loss of over 3,000MW of power to consistent vandalism and sabotage of oil and gas pipelines and assets.
Politics / EFCC Staff Who Collected Multimillionaire Bribe From Law Maker Nabbed by leonene(m): 6:05am On Sep 24, 2016
EFCC Staff who took Multi-Million bribe from lawmaker nabbed
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says it has arrested one of its operatives for allegedly collecting a N15 million bribe.
EFCC, in a statement released on Friday, said Uzodinma Agbazue a deputy detective superintendent, was arrested for “offences bordering on criminal conspiracy and extortion”.
Mr. Agbazue was arrested on Thursday following a complaint by a lawmaker under investigation by the Commission, the statement signed by the commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said.
The lawmaker said that the EFCC detective collected N15m from him with a promise to compromise the investigation.
Mr. Agbazue allegedly approached him, claiming he had been mandated by the officer handling the case to discuss and reach an agreement on how to “ kill the case ”.
“Following the approach, a sum of N15m was given to Agbazue whose game plan collapsed after the Investigating officer, who was ignorant of his scheme, refused to do his bidding.
“With the investigation gathering increased momentum after parting with the hefty sum, the complainant became uncomfortable and demanded a refund.
“The complainant stated that, when he requested for the refund of his money, Agbazue only returned N5 million claiming that the balance of N10 million had been given to someone 'to kill the case from the top',” the statement adds.
The lawmaker also alleged that the operative collected N1million at a different time as assistance for settlement of his wife’s medical bill.
The anti-graft agency said: “Uzordinma Agbazue’s action is in contravention of the Commission’s mandate and ideals as the EFCC will not solicit or accept gratification from a suspect to compromise a case under investigation.
“The suspect will be subjected to administrative action as precursor to possible prosecution at the end of the investigation.”

Family / I Married A Thief Man Divorce His Wife by leonene(m): 6:40pm On Sep 21, 2016
I married a thief, husband tells court.
A 42-year-old businessman, Livinus Uwa, has told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos that he married a thief. Uwa made this known when he testified in his divorce petition against his wife, Chineye, on Wednesday in Lagos. He urged the court to dissolve his four-year-old marriage to Chineye because of her penchant for stealing his money in the wardrobe.
“I married a thief, on severally occasions, my wife stole my money from my wardrobe, rendering me broke. The last time she burgled my room and stole N350, 000. “I reported the theft at the police station and she confessed to the theft, but the money was not recovered, “I have reported all her attitudes and stealing habits to both families, they called her but she refused to change,’’ he said.
The petitioner accused his wife, who failed to appear in court after several summonses of abandonment, adding that since they married, Chineye had been appearing and disappearing.
“When she was pregnant, she left the house to an unknown place and came back after she was delivered of the baby. “She abandoned our baby when she was 10-month-old; I have to engage a baby sitter to take care of her. When the baby was two years, I enrolled her in school and my wife reappeared,’’ he said.
He described his estranged wife as a lazy and dirty woman, adding that “Chineye is lazy, she cannot cook, wash or sweep and I do the house chores. Uwa pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage, since he could no longer condone her stealing habits, adding that he was no longer in love with her.
In his judgment, President of the court, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, dissolved the marriage. Omilola held that it was obvious from available testimony and the respondent’s refusal to appear in court that the marriage had hit the rock. He said throughout the duration of this case, the respondent refused to honour court summon, adding that the court had no other choice than to dissolve the marriage.
“The marriage between Livinus Uwa and Chineye Uwa is hereby dissolved from today, both parties are no longer husband and wife, they are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation,’’ Omilola said.

Politics / Enugu Govt Set Up Committees To Verify Standard Of Private Schools by leonene(m): 1:26pm On Sep 19, 2016
The Enugu State Government has set up a committee to verify academic standards of all private primary and post-primary schools.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday that the committee would visit all private schools in the state within six months.
Eze said that the terms of reference for the committee included ascertaining the education qualifications of teachers in private schools, the school environment and infrastructure.
He said that the government would re-certify all private schools in order for them to meet approved standards.
“We are tired of seeing or hearing that children study in inhabitable conditions, as well as private schools employing unqualified teachers that know very little above the pupils they teach.
“We are going to stop people that think that opening a school is for money-making without providing the prerequisites for such schools.
“Some of these schools merge different classes, and at times, have up to three classes packed within a classroom,’’ he said.
The commissioner added that the state government would ensure that private schools would no longer employ non-professionals to teach.
“We want to be strict in ensuring that every teacher has, at least, National Certificate of Education (NCE) before teaching in any school,’’ he said.
Eze told NAN that the government would appropriately sanction defaulting schools if recommend by the committee.
The commissioner gave the assurance that government and private schools in the state would collaborate to conduct teachers’ verification in order to rid schools of unqualified ones.
