However, rental or hire purchase become better options when you do not want to monitor Uber drivers every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month. Set a target and see pressure move from you to the drivers BUT ensure you repair, service and maintain your car(s) yourself. Drivers can hardly fuel the car so don't trust them for maintenance. Drivers are drivers but we still get some responsible ones. When you start, you will have a flock of the good, the bad, the worse than the bad, the worst and the great. As you make progress and get more experienced, you will remove the shaft from the wheat and have a saner flock. I have sacked over 30 drivers this year and am stronger and saner than when I started so don't fret. Some drivers will be with you for years, some for months and some for weeks or even days. Create a standard and stick to it.

From the business side, hire purchase is the best deal for both parties as the driver has the much needed sense of ownership, responsibility and accountability. This is my best analogy when I discuss this with prospective partners. Imagine I buy a used car for N1.5M and you get a driver (or partner) to give pay you N45,000 or N40,000 weekly for 12 months, you will earn N2,080,000 or N2,340,000 respectively. This will give you a profit earning of N840,000 or N540,000 representing 56% or 39% ROI per annum. This for me is a very good investment and you will make your money back with a profit. In fact, you will have made your full initial cost back in 9 months or less. This does not include the cost of repairs and maintenance.

There are two major things I set out for. First, I want a moderate return and by my standard, 30 to 50% is very good for this. Second, I want a short tenor. 9 to 18 months is ideal for me for this. This is very important in a hire purchase deal. I have seen partners who ask drivers to pa 55K per week for 4 years for a car on hire purchase. I can almost guarantee the driver will not complete the deal and the car will be badly used. I also want the driver to work and inherit the car as an asset. A used car transferred to the driver after one year is much better

Rental is a hybrid of both worlds. You still own the car while you get a rent on it. Simple.

It is one thing to give out numbers but its another thing for those numbers to be functional and efficient in service. It is a very good one if those numbers are very prompt to respond. I pray the latter is the case eventually.
